Matt
Nicholas had arranged for Mark and I to meet at a friend's club, VIP lounge. The place was deserted since it was booked for just the both of us. But for some reason, Mark cancelled. Nicholas may have omitted my name because I was dead sure that if Mark knew I was the one he was meeting, he'd be there before me.
I requested for his cell number and called him directly.
"Mark Willis speaking..." He answered at the second beep.
"It's Matthew Wagner. I..."
"Where?" He cut me off with a tight voice. No mistake, he was furious.
"Bubbling Red Club." He hung up. I relaxed more on the comfortable sofa as I waited. It's a good thing no one's around to interfere; 'Mark Willis and Matthew Wagner, two successful business tycoons fighting in the popular Bubbling Red club', would make a really disturbing headline. Especially since I'm the unmarried one and Mark's wife was drop-dead gorgeous. I couldn't afford to have my name linked to any kind of scandal.
Mark arrived almost immediately. He came in, scanned the room to make sure we were alone, then he securely locked the door and turned to me, doing little to conceal his anger.
"Bastard!" He snapped as he made for me, knocking the air out of me with one hard swing to my gut. For some moments, I let him hit me severally; breaking my nose, busting my lip. Then I got mad and hit him back. It was more of a jealous anger; Doris never really liked him and he wasn't even close to Claire, why would she go to him when she needed help? Of course she didn't know where to find me and Mark was the only other relative she knew, yet...
We kept at it until we both had no more strength left. He looked like shit and I knew I was no different.
"You know what?" He began as he flopped down on the 5-star rug. "Two days ago, my assistant served me some papers concerning a new casino opened about a month ago. I went through it and decided that it'd be a great place to promote my wine. What I wasn't ready for was the shock I got when I browsed who owned the place." He stopped and looked at me through bloody eyes. Damn! I didn't know I could hit that hard.
"You introduced yourself as Matthew Hugh to me. Well, now everything makes sense. After I met you for the first time that day, I searched everywhere for a certain Matthew Hugh; it was a dead end. There's no Matthew Hugh with your face." He paused again and flexed his jaw.
"I don't get it. Why would you go through so much trouble to hide your identity from me?"
"I wasn't hiding my identity from you, I was hiding it from the whole world. I got disowned and disinherited, I had no rights to my last name anymore. I could have easily told you about my past since you're my brother-in-law, but Doris made me swear not to." He shrugged and winced immediately as he started massaging his shoulders.
"I want to know what happened... right from the very beginning."
"Sure, but we'd better order some drinks and ice." I grinned.
Over a couple of drinks, I narrated everything to Mark; right from when I met Doris, to how I found out about him and the kids. He listened carefully and never really interrupted me; he wasn't even surprised when I narrated how Doris's attitude drastically changed when she realized we wouldn't be getting any money. It seemed like he expected it, like it was nothing new.
When I was done, he exhaled and finished his drink.
"Makes sense; Doris loved anything with a dollar sign. The only person's money she rejected was mine." His voice was pained and I knew how he felt. All those years Doris and I were together, there was not a single day she didn't get a text from him. He never gave up on reaching out to her. I felt so bad that I picked up her phone one day and invited him over to meet Claire. He wasted no time in appearing with his family; he was so happy to see Doris again. She made me sleep on the porch for two nights, but seeing that big smile on Mark's face was worth it.
"I still can't understand why, but it's useless thinking about that now." He turned to me. "You know, I believe you because I knew my sister and I made it my business to research about you; there's not one negative thing written about you. Although, it'll look suspicious to a random person, that shortly after your Dad's death, you got married to an average dork and went missing for ten years straight." He exhaled and leaned back.
"Claire won't be so convincing. Doris was her mother; no flaws there."
"I, at least have to try. She's a smart kid, I only have to explain to her." He chuckled.
"And tell her what? That her mother she loves so much was a golddigger who cared nothing about her family? You'd be lucky if she lets you use your mouth again." He jerked up. "Let's go."
I followed him through the secret exit to avoid being spotted by paparazzi. We each got into our cars and he drove off, leading the way. When we got there, he stopped me at the entrance.
"As much as I know that getting you back with your kids is the right thing to do, I don't want to see them hurting. If you try to win them for a whole week and Claire still thinks living without you is the best choice, you'll have to give it up."
"Mark..."
"I know it sounds stupid and I wouldn't even want to do that if I'm in your shoes, but I've noticed that giving her some space works better." He gave me his hand for a handshake.
"Do we have a deal?" I hesitated. I would go mad if I have to stay away from my kids now that I'm so close to getting them back.
"Chin up, I'm on your side here." He's right, I just have to believe in Claire to do the right thing. I shook his hand, making a mental note of calling Luciana later.
"Great! Now, I've already called my wife and gave her a heads up. She'll keep James away while you and Claire 'talk'. You'll have to keep it down if you don't want to attract James's attention; it'd do him a lot of good not to see his sister transform into a skilled female Bruce Lee." He chuckled and his phone buzzed simultaneously.
"She's by the pool." He announced as he read whatever was on the screen. "I do hope for your sake that there's no weapon around." He grinned and led the way inside. I knew that he was trying to scare me and I hated that it was actually working. Having to go through what she went through, I doubt that Claire was still my cheerful little girl. She'd despise me, yeah, and I probably deserve it, but I wanted nothing more than to gain her love again.
Mark made a quick stop at the kitchen to grab an ice bag for himself, making a remark about me not needing one, until after I've 'spoken' to Claire. I hated that he kept adding air-quotes to 'spoken' and 'talk'.
We got to the pool area but he didn't go in immediately. He just stood back and waited. I couldn't complain, it gave me time to observe her.
She was taller and so skinny; maybe that was a thing for teenagers, but it didn't stop me from feeling like she didn't get enough food. She was sitting by the pool, eyes on the water but anyone could easily tell her mind was elsewhere. She looked so young, yet so mature; like she was forced to skip being a kid and just grow up. Her dark brown hair was longer than necessary, as if she hasn't had a haircut in a while. Her blue eyes which used to be so bright and happy, were dim and glassy. This wasn't going to be easy.
Mark went closer and said something to get her attention. I held my breath, thinking she saw me, but her eyes were on Mark the whole time as she approached him. I didn't concentrate on what they were saying as I kept observing her from my position at the door. Her eyes lit up a little as she looked at him with so much concern. Just seeing Mark improved her mood; she almost smiled.
I was so lost in my thoughts that my heart dropped into my stomach the moment I heard Mark mention my name. He turned to me and Claire did the same. At first she looked shocked, then her face lost every expression, it was blank. She just stood there, staring at me.
"Now would be a good time to introduce yourself properly, don't you think?" Mark said sarcastically, clearly amused. Great! At least someone is enjoying himself.
I took a few steps closer until I was standing directly in front of her.
"Cla..."
"Get out!" She cut me off sharply.
"I'm really..."
"GET OUT!" She screamed at me as her face lost its blankness and was plunged into a deep furious expression.
"Not until you let me explain." She turned away from me, looking around for something. Her eyes fell on a skimmer net and I immediately knew what she planned. I grabbed her hands before she could make for the weapon.
"Please, just listen to me." I pleaded. It was really hard trying to restrain her as she fought to get free from me.
"I don't talk to lowlife men who abandon their heavily pregnant wives and ten year old daughters."
"I never abandoned you! Would you just let me explain?" She stepped hard on my foot and I released my grip on her for a spilt second, but it was enough for her to break free and reach for the skimmer net.
"Leave right now." She threatened as she pointed the net at me. Mark finally intervened.
"Claire, you should listen to..."
"No! There is nothing he can say that would justify what he did."
"You can't be so sure, you might be surprised at his own part of the story." She threw away the net and turned angrily to Mark.
"Why are you on his side? Why did you bring him here? What? He can finally come out of his hiding place now because my mom is gone?"
"Claire, I wasn't hiding at all. I couldn't tell you I was leaving because I didn't know..."
"Don't! I don't want to hear it. Just leave... please." Her shoulders sagged and she turned back to the pool, hugging herself.
"I really wish you'll let me explain."
"You made your choice. Go back to whatever you chose over your family." Her voice was shaky, just like Luciana's before she starts crying.
"That's the thing, I chose my family. Believe me, I..." Mark squeezed my shoulder gently and I gave up. I'll leave for tonight, but I'll definitely get my kids back.
"I'm not going to stop trying, Claire. One way or another, you'll realize that everything I did was for you." Geez! I sounded like my mother. Ugh.
"Come on." Mark said softly, leading me away from the pool area.
"I could ask Miriam to bring James outside, but you sure you want him to see you looking like this?" He whispered as we went out to the cars.
"Yes. I'll really feel better if I can just see him." His face lost it humor and he nodded. He tapped away on his phone, probably a text to his wife.
It was just a few minutes, but it felt like forever as I was really pumped to meet him finally. Miriam came out holding him by the hand. He looked just like his big sister; same brown hair and blue eyes.
I beckoned on him to come closer.
"Hey, buddy." He hesitated, glancing at Mark, at me and back. Maybe he was scared, I mean, I looked like I was ran over by a train.
"It's okay, sweetie. He's your Daddy." My heart jolted as Miriam said that. What if he rejects me like Claire did? I would be so broken.
"My Daddy?" James asked, uncertain. Then he grinned and ran towards me, I caught him in time.
"Really?" He asked with wide eyes, smiling so sweetly.
"Yes, buddy." I didn't think it was possible but his eyes shone wider.
"Does that mean Claire and I will be with you from now on?"
"Yes... but not right now." His face fell.
"Why not? Don't you miss us?"
"Sure I do, James." I hugged him. "I want nothing more than to be with you. But, right now we can't."
"Well, why not?"
"I have to..."
"James?!" Claire appeared from nowhere and yanked James out of my arms.
"Don't you dare touch him! You didn't even wait to see his face before leaving. Why do you want him now, huh?!"
"Claire... stop." James begged. His lower lip quivered as his eyes watered. Claire hugged him, muttering quietly to him.
"Leave." She said without looking at me and she carried her brother in. Miriam followed them in too.
"Well, what did I say?" Mark teased.
"I knew she'd hate me, but not enough to refuse James from seeing me." Mark shrugged.
"She has a point though, you are just seeing his face for the first time."
"You know I had no other choice." I snapped unintentionally. He didn't even bat an eyelash.
"I know that, you know that. Question is, how are you going to make Claire understand that?"
"I don't know yet, but I'm not giving up. Even if it means telling her the truth about her Mom, I'll do anything to get her back again. I'm going to get everything off my chest!"
Claire As I carried James inside, he didn't say anything and he didn't try to get away from my grasp. That was until we got to his room's door, then he jumped out of my arms and went in, shutting the door to my face. I was a little hurt though, but I knew how he must be feeling; finally meeting his Dad and his sister separated them again. But it doesn't work like that, he can't just come back after four long years and think he can easily whisk us off to his side. I don't want to know whatever made him leave, the fact is that he left without a goodbye, without a note and he didn't even try to call. I walked off to my room and buried my face in my pillow. I didn't want to think about him at all. My only regret was that James saw him and now he doesn't want to look at me. I wasn't that lucky though; I couldn't stop thinking about him, about the past and about how much better it'd be if we're together again. A
Claire I only had one word to describe my Dad's house: "Whoa!" Of course I didn't say it out loud, I couldn't let him know I'm impressed, but God! I was deeply impressed. I mean, it was somewhere between a mansion and heaven. The good news is, it's so big, I won't even have to see my Dad's face at all! Talk about a win-win, huh? There were rows of people in uniforms, men and women who stood to welcome James and I. It felt like a castle where the Royals are being welcomed from a trip. Dad introduced us to everyone but I was barely listening, I couldn't wait to find out what my room looked like. There was one person I did get her name though; she was an older woman, probably in her early fifties and Dad introduced her as our Nanny. "You know I'm fourteen right? Not ten. I don't need a Nanny." I objected, trying not to sound offensive to the Nanny. "I know, but..." "No buts, I don't need
"Hurry!" James was whining as I made cookies for him. He had woken me up just to bake cookies for him and he was so impatient. Who knew he missed my cookies so much? It took us some time to find the kitchen as Emma and Reggie were nowhere to be found. "Almost ready." "Quickly!" He whined again. "What are you? A pregnant lady? Why are you suddenly craving cookies." I asked as I placed my creation on the oven tray. "I don't know, I just love your cookies." "They are the best, right?" "Uh-huh!" Reggie and Emma came into the kitchen then. "There you are! What are you doing?" Reggie asked. "Making cookies. Where were you guys?" I asked. "Around. Mrs Wagner arrives today, so all hands were needed in preparing the house for her arrival." "Do you have any idea when she will be here?" "Claire?!" James fussed. "Sorry." I hurriedly put the cookies in the oven and set the timer. "Just give it sometim
ClaireEmma came in almost immediately, followed closely by a few other staff as they carried shopping bags."What are those?" I asked as I sat up."Starter clothes and accessories for you. Mrs Hart will be here later today to help you shop for your preferred clothes.""I don't understand." The other staff put down the bags by my huge closet and left without a word."Someone is coming here to help me shop? Is there a mall inside here?" That cracked her up; it took her two long minutes to compose herself."No, you'll select on her magazine and tablet, then she'll deliver them to you. If you choose something that isn't in her boutique, she'll order them. The point is, you don't have to go anywhere, whatever you want will be handed over to you."I didn't like how that sounded; it made me feel like plastic... Ugh, it's hard to explain. What's harder is being a rich man's kid."I'll get you your breakfast, do you want
The bath was oddly less embarrassing, probably because Emma had her eyes closed to make me more comfortable. I was almost done, just to wash my hair was left when Jacey came back but stood at the other side of the bathroom door."Hurry up! They'll be here soon.""In a minute." Emma answered. She quickly washed my hair, rinsed it up and gave me a towel before she finally opened her eyes."Better?" She asked with a smirk."Yes, thank you.""Any century now!" Jacey said from the other side of the door.A few minutes later, I was in my denim shorts as Emma helped me dry my hair."Remind me to add hairdryer and body lotion to your shopping list." I nodded to Emma; she had to borrow a hairdryer from one of the staff that lived in the mansion."They're here!" Jacey suddenly sprung up from her position on my bed."How can you tell? Do you hear voices?" She rolled her eyes at my questions."Will you just come already?" She
MattI couldn't tell what my Mom was thinking; trying to call Doris names in front of the kids. Sometimes, she can be really hard to understand, it's no wonder James stayed away from her. Just when Claire's beginning to warm up to me, she wants to ruin it and take me back to square one again.I wasn't even one to vent my anger, I always leave the arguments and the harsh words to Luciana."Could you be any less impossible, Mom? What was that back there?" Luciana began as soon as we got into the green house. Abigail and I sat down at the tea table and watched Mom and Luciana yell at each other; it was getting old."Can't you at least buy a heart? It's barely two weeks since those kids lost their mother and now they are turning to their Dad's family for support, you want them to find out that you hate their mother? How terrible is that?""Luciana please be quiet, I'm not going to argue with you right now." That was new! Mom never misses
"How's that possible? He's so little.""Well, that's what the doctor said." Claire snapped at Abigail. I could see that it was a hard topic for her, hell; it was hard for me too."It just started one day; he had a fever so I went down to the pharmacy to get him some drugs, when I got back, Frank and Mom were fighting, right in front of him. When I took him away to his room, I noticed that he wasn't moving at all, it was as if he paused in time." She stopped and looked at me. "That was two years ago. The doctor said it's really rare for kids, yet here we are."Damn! Why does everything have to be so wrong? Schizophrenia? Isn't that just too much?"He's coming back." Claire muttered under her breath so that only we heard her. James blinked twice, then stretched."Claire!" He sounded cheerful. "There are so many pictures of you here and none of me.""Sorry, Buddy. It's just that Dad doesn't have any of your pictures.""What about t
ClaireAs much as Jacey couldn't stop talking, Antonio couldn't even say a word. All day, I've tried different ways to get him to talk to me but it was as if I was talking to a rock. He never responded and I couldn't take it personal because he didn't speak to anyone else either. Maybe it was his thing, the deep melancholy. But I couldn't give up on being great friends with him; it made more sense since he's only a few months older than me.The next morning, after I had gotten ready to leave for my old home, I decided to ask Antonio to join me. Even though I told my Dad I would go and was very stubborn about it, it spooked me out to go back there. I would have easily asked Jacey but she's just ten and she mentioned going somewhere with Grandma. Dad had insisted that I take a bodyguard or he'd ask some cops to escort me but I turned him down flat; I made him promise to let me do it myself. He would have kept pestering me if Abigail hadn't interve
I was standing in the parking lot, away from the couple I was staring at. Jason... He was holding a brunette's hand... and that hand had a diamond ring on its ring finger. He was freaking engaged?!My heart pounded deeply in my chest. I was too late? But... he was my soulmate, right? Wrong. Probably the same time I stopped believing in soulmates was the same time he seized being mine.He was smiling so fondly at the brunette and I couldn't see her face but I knew she had a big smile as well. "You have no right to be sad... You have no right to be sad..." I kept muttering to myself, over and over again as I worked up the courage to leave there."I don't believe it! It's Claire Wagner!" I stilled when I heard a lady shriek. Other students stopped to stare at me and a few began making their way towards me.I diverted my eyes back to Jason, he and his brunette were staring at me, he looked confused.I turned around and bolted for my car, driving out of the campus. Some crazy fans ran af
"Hey single lady, come home." I kept staring at my phone. What the actual hell? That jerk has been ignoring me for the past two years and just a few minutes after my boyfriend broke up with me, he sends a text?!I was furious and sad and relieved... God! I just wanted to hug my cousin so badly!Judy's call came in before I could reply to Antonio's text; she had been my personal assistant since I moved to Paris. Emma couldn't come with me because she wanted to be a full time Mom to Shelby and she did say she was getting married in a month to a guy she met.I didn't try getting close to Judy though, she just wasn't as free with me like Emma used to be, she just wanted our relationship to be professional and I didn't mind at all.Of course she wouldn't be calling if she knew I was on a date with Archie, but I didn't tell her and she probably thinks I've disappeared.I picked up."Hey, Judy.""Hello. Where are you?" See that? She's so uptight."I was originally on a date with Archie but I
"There's my girl!" Archie cheered, hugging me and kissing me firmly on my lips. "I'm sorry I couldn't make it to the award show but I'm proud of you nevertheless." I moved aside to let him into my apartment and he went straight for the glass plaque I had left earlier on the breakfast table."It looks great. Breakout Star, Claire Wagner." Yup! That's me. The newest eighteen year old who has been working her ass off for the past two years, juggling three careers as a model, actress and my all time favourite, a photographer. It hasn't been easy and I can't stress how many times my parents have told me to take a break and come home just to relax, but I've been stubborn like always. Working keeps my mind away from depressing stuff like worrying about Jason who I haven't seen in the last two years and he doesn't even have a social media account, I mean, who doesn't have a social media account? And even Antonio! That dumb jerk gave a stupid excuse and avoided attending my parents wedding, he'
"Will you be my maid of honour?" I was staring back at Mom, waiting for her to say she's just kidding but she was really waiting for my answer."Me?!" I was surprised. "Are you sure? What about Alice?" I said, gesturing to the other woman who sat next to me on the lounge."I'm married and even if I'm not, you should be her maid of honour." Alice replied before Mom could."Yes, Claire, I want you to be my maid of honour. I can't think of anyone better than you." I was flattered, but of course I wouldn't be if I had seen it before now, but my wacky abilities have deserted me for a while now; even after an entire week after I woke up, I still can't tell the future."Yes!" I said excitedly and Mom hugged me immediately, sighing in relief."Thank you. You know what? This calls for a celebration. How about all three of us hang out together? Like a girls' day out. We could go to the spa, get makeovers, manis-pedis, new hairdos...""Okay that sounds like a mother-daughter outing and I already
"Are you insane?!" Antonio half-yelled at me. I pretended not to hear him as I ate my birthday cake. After Archie was done with his call, he told everyone we were dating and though my parents weren't so thrilled about it, everyone was cool with it."You can't go from being in love with Jason to being Archie's girlfriend.""I can and that's what I'm doing." I said nonchalantly."Claire, you can't do that.""Why? Archie likes me to bits and I think he's totally lovable, hence, we're dating. And don't forget we already told our parents and they are okay with it.""Your Dad wasn't okay with it, he knows you should be with Jason, he's just being nice.""Which I expect you to be too. Archie is a great guy and Jason is far from my reach anyway. To be honest, I don't think I would have any feelings for Jason if not for that soul mate bullshit.""Bullshit?! Is this why you shut me out? Because you're harbouring crazy thoughts like this?" Antonio was pissed, I knew that but I wasn't going to le
"That went well." I stilled when I heard Antonio's voice behind me. What was he doing in my room? "Did you forget I can tell the immediate future? I knew the surprise would be ruined and you'd lock yourself up here." Oh, well.I sank to the floor and just hugged my legs. "You're sad, I get it. But look on the bright side...""There's not bright side here, Antonio. I love him yet I told him to get lost. Who does that?!" I hugged my legs tighter. Antonio came over and sat next to me."I don't know what to tell you, all I see is you spending the next two years missing Jason while you figure your life out." Two years?!"It's going to take that long?""You can't see your future?""I can't see anything, my abilities are messy right now. I can only tell the present and read someone's mind.""I see. That's probably because you haven't healed completely from the accident." I sighed."That's not important to me. I'm going to spend a full two years without Jason? Will we ever get back together?
"Claire?! Wait!" I didn't listen to Jason, I kept walking until I got to the car. He caught up to me."What happened? Are you okay?""I want to go home. Can you take me home?" I avoided his eyes."Yes, but what really happened? Did my mom say something...?""Just forget it. Like I said, I'm tired." He exhaled and unlocked the car. We both got in.I didn't say anything while he took me home, I could very well feel his eyes on me, but I kept my eyes away from him all the time."Look, I'm sorry about my Mom, I'm definitely sure she said something to you. She can be a little uppity sometimes but..." Oh, he got that one right."Don't apologize, she didn't do anything wrong.""Oh, okay." We were quiet for a few minutes more. I knew what Antonio expected me to do, break it up with Jason; and the easiest way to do that is when he thinks I don't remember him. I didn't want to, I really didn't want to but Jason has a lot planned out for himself and I'm just a roller coaster of drama and danger,
"Claire?!" I turned away from Jason to Aunt Miriam.Uncle Mark's family was all the distraction I needed to get my mind off Jason... and his lips. Well, at least for the meantime.Kevin was an adorable kid, he looked every bit like Aunt Miriam and Jane tried acting a bit mature to impress me, but she was still the cute little girl I know. Of course they were glad to have me, especially Tyler, it wasn't even as if I've been in a coma for years, they acted like I've only been gone for a week.Uncle Mark was happy Renee got what she deserved but he didn't know about my abilities, none of them did and I wondered why Dad didn't say anything. There are family after all."You ready to go? Mom's expecting us now." Jason whispered to me. I was playing dress-up with Jane and Aunt Miriam."Yeah." I apologized to Jane and Aunt Miriam, I had to promise to return before they let me go and I was back in the car with Jason."So, you said your Mom lives with her dogs, right?""Yeah.""Did she explain
It's my birthday? I pulled away to check my phone, it was really the second day of April. I'm sixteen!I crushed Antonio in another tighter hug, excited."I'm sixteen!""You sound like you've waited a long time for that, even after you skipped two whole years." I ignored Antonio's teasing and got off the floor."I'm happy because I finally remember Jason and now that I'm sixteen, my Dad won't mind me dating some..." A knock on the door interrupted me."Uhm, Claire? Can we talk?" It was Jason. I made for the door but Antonio blocked my path. Great! They still had a beef."It's not about that, trust me." Antonio said in a whisper. "You've regained your memories, I have no reason to stay mad at him, it wasn't even his fault to begin with. I'm stopping you because you can't tell Jason you remember him. Pretend you don't remember him, I have a reason." That's crazy! I just hurt his feelings out there and two weeks ago, I was about to tell him how I feel about him, why do I have to stop now
