Brooklyn was used to caring for Dimitri, which was good news to the latter.

"Aren't you scornful of me?" he asked, sounding depressed. "Scornful of the fact that I'm a cripple and that I can't play basketball. You're scornful of me for not being as handsome as Lance."

"What?" Brooklyn was baffled. When had he ever said anything like that?"

"You can go be with him if you want," Dimitri said pitifully. His tone was so despondent that he sounded like he was being abandoned.

"But I don't." Brooklyn felt aggrieved. When had he even thought of getting together with Lance? He'd only said a few words to the latter. How had things ended up like this?

"The look in your eyes and your tone of voice made it clear." Dimitri looked at him sadly. "Do you really want to be with him, Zachary?"

"Not at all," Brooklyn protested. "I genuinely don't want that. I just wanted to encourage him a little because of how good he was at the game."

"Really?" Dimitri looked into his eyes.
