Chapter 33

On the way home, neither Dimitri nor Brooklyn spoke. Somehow, things had become awkward. Perhaps the banquet had driven a bit of a wedge between them.

When Dimitri got out of the car, he called Brooklyn, who had walked ahead of him. "Zachary, come walk behind me."

Brooklyn didn't understand this but still did as told. He moved behind Dimitri's wheelchair and pushed it slowly.

"I'm taking you to university tomorrow," Dimitri said. "Remember to wake up early so I can get all your information sorted."

Brooklyn looked down at Dimitri's head and thought about Amanda saying that their story should've ended long ago.

"Why are you still in love with me?" he asked. "No one wants us to be together. We're going against the world."

"Why do we have to stick to what the world wants for us?" Dimitri stared into the distance, seemingly thinking about things that had happened in the past. "Do you remember when we first met, Zachary?"
