EVELYN’S POV:
It had been a week now since Dad was admitted to the hospital. The kids were doing well, and we were preparing for their formal and legal adoption today. Before proceeding, we planned to visit Dad at the hospital. His caretaker was taking excellent care of him, and Mia was doing great with the kids.
I had also resumed work, managing both companies temporarily, balancing everything as best as I could, even though it wasn't easy, I always have Leonard. He would put me through.
And I'm also taking a virtual course on management, so things are managing to get easier.
We left for the hospital with the kids since we were heading to their grandparents’ home afterward.
“Mummy, sit with us,” the children pleaded as I dropped them off at the back passenger seats.
I couldn’t resist their request, so I joined them in the back, leaving Leonard alone in the front.
As we drove, I told them stories to keep them entertained. Along the way, we stopped at a shop to get ice cream.
“Mummy, I want to get ice cream for Grandpa,” Ryan said, pointing at a bowl of ice cream.
While Ryan focused on his choice, River was busy picking items for herself. Leonard stayed close, helping her shop.
We bought what we needed and left for the hospital. Pulling into the driveway, we got out of the car and made our way to Dad’s room. The kids ran ahead to greet him, excited to see their grandfather.
“Grandpa! How are you?” they exclaimed in unison.
Dad smiled warmly, embracing them both. He was seated on the bed, looking much better than I’d expected.
“Bring Grandpa his ice cream!” Ryan demanded, his little voice commanding yet endearing.
I smiled and handed the ice cream to Dad. Meanwhile, Leonard and my dad exchanged simple greetings, and I hugged Dad, placing a kiss on his forehead.
“I have something to show you, Daddy,” I said, holding out my hand to reveal a beautiful diamond ring that sparkled on my finger.
His eyes lit up with joy. “That is beautiful. Congratulations!” he said warmly. His words brought a sense of calmness and validation that I didn’t realize I needed.
We spent the next hour chatting, laughing, and even discussing some serious matters. It was a heartwarming moment.
When it was time to leave for Samantha’s parents’ house, we gave the caregiver some instructions and bid Dad goodbye.
Less than an hour later, we arrived at Samantha’s parents’ home. Leonard carried Ryan while I held River in my arms. We knocked on the door, and Samantha greeted us.
“Hold on,” she called from inside before opening the door.
“Good afternoon,” we greeted each other politely as she ushered us inside.
The kids stayed close to us, their expressions hesitant and quiet. I wondered if Samantha had ever brought them here because they didn’t seem familiar with the place.
Inside, the conversation quickly turned serious.
“As much as we trust Henderson Leonard to take care of the kids, we believe they should stay with us,” Samantha’s dad said, his words leaving me stunned.
“What? But…” I began, only to be cut off by Samantha’s mom.
“Listen, Evelyn, we know you’re a good person with a big heart. But after everything our daughter put you through, you shouldn’t have to bear the responsibility of raising her children,” she explained.
I didn’t need convincing. I had already forgiven Samantha.
“It’s no burden to me. I’m fond of these kids,” I said firmly.
Samantha’s dad continued, “The kids are the only connection we have left to our daughter. We appreciate everything you’ve done, but we’d like to keep them.”
Before I could say more, Leonard intervened. “Evelyn, it’s okay. It would be selfish of us to take the kids from their grandparents. I think they should stay here,” he said, surprising me. I had expected him to argue for custody, but he didn’t.
Swallowing my feelings, I whispered, “Alright.”
We agreed that we could visit the kids whenever we wanted.
But when it was time to leave, the kids broke down in tears.
“Mummy, please don’t leave us! We want to come with you!” they cried, their little voices breaking my heart.
Tears streamed down my face as we drove away. I cried quietly the entire way.
When we stopped at my office to pick up some files, I forced myself to focus. The Wyatt Cooperative building stood tall, welcoming me back to reality.
Inside, I checked on the staff and exchanged a few words with my secretary.
“Congratulations again, ma’am, on your engagement,” she said with a smile. She had always not forgotten to share my happiness. And that made me like her so much, she had also put so much to the growth of the company.
I thought internally that it was time to upgrade her, but after that everything was fine with me.
I blushed and thanked her before grabbing my documents and leaving.
Back in the car, the absence of the kids weighed heavily on me. Leonard, however, seemed calm, his demeanor unfazed.
To comfort myself, I rubbed my stomach subconsciously.
“I want a girl,” Leonard said, his eyes glancing at me with a beautiful smile, “ I want her just like her mother, especially those eyes.” He added
“Of course, it’s a boy,” I teased.
“We’ll see about that,” he replied, turning his attention back to driving, with a smirk on his face.
Before long, we were back at the hospital. We stepped out of the car and went into the ward.
My father and the caregiver seemed to have a bond deep into conversation.
When I told Dad about the kids, he was visibly saddened but reasoned with Samantha’s parents’ decision. His perspective made me question if I’d been selfish for wanting to keep the kids.
As I wrestled with my emotions, the doctor walked in, holding files and medications.
We greeted him, but my mind was racing, eager to hear what he had to say.
EVELYN'S POV:“Mr. Wyatt is better now, and according to the test report, he can be discharged. However, he will need close monitoring,” the doctor said.I sighed in relief and thanked him.Since Dad would need further care, I asked the caregiver to extend her service.“It’s no problem, ma’am,” she assured me.We collected all the necessary documents and medication before leaving the hospital. I helped my dad up, and we walked slowly to the car parked in the garage. As we drove, I called Mia to update her.“I’ll miss them a lot,” she said, referring to the kids. I could hear the sadness in her voice.“My dad has been discharged, and we’re on our way home,” I shared. She sounded happy and requested to speak to him. They chatted briefly before ending the call.Shortly after, Leonard’s phone rang.“Hello?” he answered. I sensed it was an urgent call, though the number seemed familiar.“Call Alex,” he said after a moment, making me realize it wasn’t a new number. When we got home, Leonar
Evelyn's POVI sat in the room, the sound of my thumping heart was louder with the placidness around. As the clock ticked every moment, my body grew more intense in fear and anticipation. How long have I been sitting here? I could barely remember, but I was badly waiting for the doctor to enter the room. But even if he comes, I doubt he could dispel the unease that coiled in my stomach like a slithering serpent. I jerked back from my seat when the door was pushed open. The doctor stepped into the room and made his way to his seat. I furrowed my brows, trying to fathom his expression in order to know my fate, but he had a serious look arched on his face as he passed a paper to me. “What does it say?” I asked, looking at him desperately.“Take a look,” was his only reply as he leaned back against his seat. With a racing heart, I slowly opened the paper and read through it. “Positive?” I turned my gaze to look at the doctor. I stared at him with wide eyes in disbelief. “Doctor… I'm pr
Evelyn's POVI slowly opened my eyes but closed them immediately when I felt the pain. My head was throbbing in pain and I felt a sharp pain that left me breathless. Forcing myself to focus, I tried to move, only to realize that my limbs were unresponsive, weighed down by an unseen force. Desperation etched across my features, I attempted to scream for help, but no sound escaped my lips, trapped in a silent scream of anguish. I heard the room door slammed open and soon a fight ensued.“Evelyn?” That voice… that was familiar and in desperation to find out if my consciousness was playing a trick on me. There was no way I could be hearing the voice of my father…“Evelyn wake up? Are you okay?” The voice came again and this time, I forced my eyes open and a gasp escaped my lips.“Dad?” I called in disbelief. What was going on? What was he doing here? “A-Am I in heaven?” I asked and his brows furrowed.Where was I? I darted my eyes around in wonder, but then he spoke again. “What are you
Evenly’s POV“Oh and there is our couple,” his mother's voice made me pause, and he finally pulled away. I couldn't be any less thankful for the timely interruption. Being in his arms felt suffocating, I nearly puked. She wore a black dress and behind her was Caleb’s father, matching her outfit. “I heard you were down yesterday,” she pointed out. I had always felt this extreme hate oozing from her but always ignored it: and the few times i’d spilled it to Caleb, he merely waved me off . Perhaps it was time I face the truth without ignoring it. “I'm better now, thank you,” I smiled faintly at her. I wanted it to end already because the memories of Caleb hitting my head with a rod multiple times with eyes glaring at me had began seething into my head. I felt angry, irritated and hurt at my naivety with every moment Caleb stayed beside me. Suddenly, it became too hard to breathe as the emotions weighed on my chest, making it impossible to breathe or think properly. I immediately excus
Evelyn's POVI made my way straight to the bar because it was the only place that could help blow away the cobwebs that were clogged in my heart at the moment. My thoughts were still very heavy with memories of my past life and the things I'd been through. Walking into the slightly warm space with ambient lighting, I went straight to grab an order and drink my sorrows away. I still remembered all of it, every single moment of it, and the dim lights coupled with the hum of the quiet chatting around me seemed to amplify my loneliness. I needed a drink as soon as possible. Sitting at the bar, I gestured towards the bartender. “Whiskey, please.” I requested, flashing a tight-lipped smile that didn't reach my eyes. He disappeared behind the counter and soon popped out again before pouring me a copious amount. I nodded and began to sip on my drink. I thought about the choices I had made, the people I had hurt, and the life I had just left behind. It was all for the best, I wasn't going t
Evelyn's POV“Evelyn, where have you been all these time? Have been trying your number, but I got no response from you. Do you know he was worried? I was also scared,” my father's voice resounded in the living room as he flared up? I was somehow expecting this reaction. He hated being lost or confused and after everything that happened yesterday at the engagement party, he must have felt exhausted while trying to answer the questions from the guests and worse, from Caleb's parents. “We have a lot to discuss, so sit down,” he gestured towards a couch without waiting for me to explain myself. I could tell that he was angry.“I'm sorry, dad, for not telling you about my plans or explaining why I had to cancel the engagement,” I started. “But the truth is, I don't think I want to get married to Caleb anymore,” I said and waited for him to respond. His brows creased into a hard knot as he stared at me speechlessly. He seemed confused again. “I don't understand. This is the same guy that
Evelyn's POVThe morning sunlight streamed through the large windows of my father's office, bathing the room in a warm glow. I sat across from him, feeling slightly tense as I watched him go over some company reports. His expression was unreadable, a combination of stern focus and fatherly concern. I couldn’t help but wonder if he truly believed I could handle all this responsibility.“You wanted to learn, Evelyn,” he said finally, setting the papers down and fixing his sharp eyes on me. “Running a company like this isn’t about making speeches and shaking hands. It’s about decisions, hard ones. Do you think you’re ready for that?”I nodded, though my heart pounded in my chest. “I know it’s a lot, Dad, but I’m ready to prove myself. I just need you to give me a chance.”He leaned back in his chair, studying me for what felt like an eternity. “Alright,” he said at last. “I’ll start by letting you sit in on today’s board meeting. Just observe. Listen carefully. If you still want to do th
Evelyn POV Dana’s message came out of the blue late in the evening. "Can we meet tomorrow? I’m worried about you."For a moment, I stared at the screen, wondering if I’d imagined it. Dana wasn’t the type to check in unless she had an ulterior motive. Still, curiosity tugged at me. What could she possibly want? Her concern felt as genuine as a plastic pearl, but I decided to play along. The next afternoon, I walked into the café, a quiet little spot tucked into the corner of the city. Dana had chosen the table by the window, naturally. She was already seated, her designer sunglasses perched on her head and a delicate teacup in her manicured hands.“Evelyn!” she said brightly, her smile wide enough to show all her teeth. “You look amazing.”“Thanks,” I replied coolly, pulling out the chair across from her. “You wanted to talk?”The waiter approached, and Dana ordered her usual tea with extra honey, explaining how she’d been “under the weather.” I asked for coffee, no frills. As the wai

EVELYN’S POV:"It's okay, it's going to be fine. Try to steady your breath," he said gently to me.He left the bed and brought me a glass of water. I drank it, and I must say, it helped me steady myself. He jumped back onto the bed, cuddling me while stroking my hair gently. It was like a soothing balm. I felt at peace again and soon drifted off to sleep. The next time I woke up, it was 10 a.m. The sound of my phone ringing stirred me awake. Leonard was still sleeping. As I looked at his peaceful figure on the bed, I sighed, thankful that everything I had dreamt about was just that—a dream.I picked up my phone and hesitantly answered the call. It was an unknown number.“Hello?” I said, pressing the phone to my ear.“Good morning, ma’am. It’s the caregiver. Mr. Wyatt is awake and has asked to see you,” she said briskly.“Please let me speak to him,” I requested.“Evelyn,” my dad’s faint voice called.“Good morning, Dad!” I said, relieved to hear him.“I’ll be at the hospital soon,” I
EVELYN’S POV:"I'm so sorry." Dana's unmistakable voice cut through the silence. I opened my eyes slowly, and our gazes met. The agony on her face was undeniable, her eyes swollen from crying, she looked so pathetic and vulnerable, this was unlike Dana. I felt a pang of pity towards her."It was all jealousy," she confessed. "Caleb and I have always been in love, but we decided to use you for you to our advantage, we wanted Caleb to take control of Your father’s company, but nothing we did worked out, and I just realized how much I have hurt you. Can you ever forgive me, Evelyn?" Her voice was pleading, her desperation evident."It's okay, Dana," I said softly, holding out my hand to help her up. She was kneeling. "I forgive you. Everything is okay.” I said as I cried with her, unable to hold in my tears. The moment the words left my mouth, she engulfed me in a suffocating hug. "Thank you so much, Evelyn," she said, her tone almost jubilant. “ I can't believe you did this for me, I'm
EVELYN’S POV:“Hi, Mom,” he greeted with a huge smile on his face.“Congratulations,” his mom replied happily. Even tho I couldn't see her face, I had visualised her smile. “How’s Evelyn?” she inquired further.“She’s here, she’s fine. We’re both happy,” he said, breathless yet composed, his composure to me was also everything.“Ryan and River,” I whispered, urging him to ask her.“How are the kids?” he asked, acknowledging me.“They’re asleep now, but they’ll need their parents by tomorrow,” she said playfully, “ it was hell, before they got to sleep.”“How’s Mr Wyatt?” she asked, worries evident in her tone.“He’s okay for now, the doctors have been attending to him.” Leonard explained.“All right,” she sighed, wishing him a quick recovery before hanging up.“Your mom knew about this? This is crazy, Leonard,” I said, taking a bite of my food.He just smiled and kept looking at me admiringly. I couldn't stop blushing the whole time.Just as if staged, Leonard’s phone started buzzing
EVELYN’S POV“He is going to be fine. It’s just that he’s been taking the wrong dosage for his condition, which has caused a serious contraction within his system. But we’ll do all we can to make sure he recovers,” the doctor explained before leaving us.If the doctor said he’d been taking the wrong dosage, it could only mean my dad had known he was ill before now and had refused to tell me.I knew he’d been trying to shield me from worry, but not trusting me enough to share his struggles hurt more than his current state.“How could he not say a thing to me? I didn’t even know my dad was ill until now,” I cried as I buried my face against Leonard’s chest. He stroked my back gently, whispering assurances that everything was going to be okay. But I wasn’t ready to accept his words. I sobbed uncontrollably, letting the pain flow through my tears. Leonard remained by my side, offering his silent support. After what felt like forever, I began to feel lighter, though the weight of the situa
EVELYN’S POV:“What’s happening?” Leonard asked, noticing the worry etched on my face.I ignored him, fear bubbling in my chest as I redialed my dad’s number. It rang, but the call didn’t connect. My fear intensified, my mind racing with endless possibilities.“Hey, calm down, please,” Leonard said, reaching out to me, trying to comfort me.“My dad... I need to get home. Something’s wrong—I don’t know what it is,” I said, my words tumbling out chaotically.“Eve, take a deep breath. Breathe in and out. Everything will be fine. Just get ready,” he said calmly before stepping out of the room. I stood still, shocked For a moment, before I hurried to my wardrobe, grabbed some clothes, and took a quick shower. By the time I was ready, it was already 11 a.m.I waited for Leonard to return, but I was already getting impatient, I felt I was getting too late. I couldn't afford to miss out on anything.Noises came from the veranda, which distracted my thoughts.“Hey, kids, come back here!” I he
EVELYN’S POV:Leonard adjusted toward me and pulled me into a cuddle. It didn’t take long before I drifted off to sleep. When I woke up, it was almost night. I quickly got up, rushed into the bathroom, and finished bathing in record time. After dressing up, I headed straight outside. My mind was on the kids. Were they still sleeping or awake? Were they okay?“Argh!” I shouted as I bumped into someone. I was about to fall, but his strong hands caught me before I hit the floor.“Take it easy,” Leonard’s unmistakable voice reached me. As I looked into his eyes, we both burst into laughter.“What’s going on?” he asked.“I just wanted to check on the kids,” I replied softly.“They’re fine. Mom is with them,” he said. I sighed in relief. Then, his voice became urgent. “Hurry up. We need to be elsewhere.” He grabbed my hand and led me back into the room.“Where are we going?” I asked.“Out, for some air,” he replied while slipping into his trousers.“You should get dressed,” he added.“Why d
EVELYN’S POVAs we got closer, everything seemed normal. The kids were playing happily, and Mia looked perfectly fine, laughing and enjoying herself with them. I placed a hand over my chest, letting out a deep sigh of relief.“Mom, what was that scream?” Leonard asked, his tone concerned.“Ryan almost fell—or I thought he fell,” she replied, searching for the right words.“You scared us. I thought something serious had happened,” Leonard said, the worry still evident in his voice.“Well, I’m sorry for that,” she said casually, brushing it off.The kids, noticing us nearby, came running toward us. The same innocence I had seen the first time I met them sparkled in their eyes, filling me with a sense of peace I couldn’t quite explain. We all sat together in the garden as some servants brought fresh juice. While sipping on our drinks, we talked about various things, especially the progress of my new company. At the moment, the company was being handled by the initial team, and I planned
