Isla’s POV
"Of course, you are not her. You will never be her! But that doesn't mean you don't remind me of her even more!" Adrian spat, running his hands through his hair, his eyes full of love and loss.
Adrian’s words cut deep, making my blood boil. I kicked him in the gut and stepped away from him.
"Then stay away from me!" I shouted, my voice raw with emotion.
He just kept looking at me, but I stormed out, not wanting to do anything with him. I should have gone home, where it was safer. But Adrian’s words echoed in my mind, clouding my judgment. I was driven by a need to find the murderer and clear my name. I stormed off into the thick forest again. My heart pounded, every step feeling heavier as the frustration churned inside me.
I wasn't sure where exactly I was going, burning with rage. Just then, I nearly crashed into Lucas and Stefan. I stumbled back, startled by their sudden presence.
"Isla, are you okay?" Lucas asked with genuine concern. His eyes flicked over me as if he was checking for injuries. A part of me felt a wave of warmth. We just met today, and yet I felt like I could trust him.
I bit my lip, shaking my head as I tried to compose myself. I didn't want them to find out that Adrian had some effect on me. "No... I am fine."
Stefan stepped forward, perhaps catching my hesitation, his brows pulling together. "Did Adrian do something?"
"No," I muttered, "I kicked him before it could get worse."
Lucas’s eyes widened slightly, a flash of surprise quickly replaced by something that almost looked like pride. “You kicked him?”
Stefan, crossed his arms, his eyes becoming dreamy. “Wish I had been there to see that,” he chuckled, lightening the mood of all of us.
I couldn’t help but finally smile. “Don’t get too excited. I doubt it hurt him.”
"Still, good on you." Stefan nodded approvingly before his expression grew serious.
"What happened? Why are you both returning already?" I asked, my head now reeling over Betty's death.
“The scene has been sealed off,” Lucas replied, his tone taking a darker edge. “With two deaths so close together, everyone is on edge. The patrol team asked us to leave as they would investigate it further."
Stefan sighed, not trying to hide his frustration. "I am sure by now the news of Betty's death has reached the pack. With two deaths now, the pack is going to be on edge. I am afraid things are going to get a lot worse if we don’t figure this out soon.”
"Right, did you guys find anything unusual at the scene?" I muttered, rubbing my temple. I was desperate for a breakthrough.
Lucas nodded, pulling something out from his pocket. A small, wilted petal rested in his palm. "We found this on Betty’s clothing. A mandrake petal. It's so rare and out of the place."
My breath hitched, my heart thudding in my chest. "A mandrake petal?"
The puzzle pieces were beginning to fall into place. I immediately took out the wilted mandrake flower near Elara's accident site and showed it to them.
"Look what I found near Elara’s accident site," I said, my voice low, my mind racing. "The two must be connected." They have to be connected."
Lucas narrowed his eyes, taking the wilted flower from me and comparing it with the one in his hands. "Mandrake is dangerous," he said quietly. "Whoever is using this doesn't have good intentions."
Stefan frowned, his eyes narrowing in thought. “But who would have access to mandrake? It’s not exactly something you pick up at the market.”
"Exactly," I replied, my mind racing.
“But why would Elara be anywhere near mandrake?” Stefan asked, rubbing his temple.
My pulse quickened. My mind flashed to my sister’s face, her bright smile, and her secrets. “I don't know. I don't think she had any use for it.”
Lucas exchanged a look with Stefan and then at me. "Are you sure about that?"
I hesitated, doubt creeping into my mind. Did I really know her that well? We were never close and we both had our secrets and faith. Maybe... Maybe she was involved in something I didn't know. But then I didn't want to say anything just because it seemed so.
“We need to figure out who has access to this stuff,” I said, breathing deeply. “Before anyone else gets hurt.”
But just then a sharp scent hit me, familiar and unmistakable. I tensed, my body going rigid. He was back again! Why?
Adrian.
His eyes locked onto mine, intense and dark, making my stomach flip in ways I hated. I could feel the air around us thicken as he approached, his wolf humming just beneath the surface, raw and predatory.
“Why didn't you go home? I had to escort you out myself!” He groaned, not trying to hide his irritation.
I opened my mouth to respond, but Lucas was quicker. “We are investigating,” he said, stepping between us. His tone was calm, but there was an edge to it. “You got a problem with that?”
Adrian’s gaze shifted to Lucas, a sneer forming at the corner of his mouth. “Yeah. I do,” he replied, his voice a dangerous purr. “I don’t like people snooping around in my pack's business.”
Stefan snorted, stepping forward as well. "We are trying to clear our friend's name. You are the one interfering.”
Adrian’s eyes flicked back to me, ignoring the others. “I warned you to avoid them, Isla?”
I glared at him, my fists clenching at my sides. “And I told you to stay away from me,” I said, my voice tight. “Unlike some people, my true friends want to help me for real.” I spat, puffing into the air.
His jaw tightened, and for a moment, his eyes flickered with anger and maybe jealousy.
But then it was gone, replaced by that cold, mocking expression. "True friends? Funny way of showing it."
I took a step forward, ignoring Lucas and Stefan’s tense stances beside me. “Why do you care, Adrian, who are my friends and not? I am not Elara.” I shot back, my voice sharp, reminding him again indirectly to step back.
He didn’t answer, just stared at me with those intense eyes, making me feel suffocated.
“Whatever,” he muttered. “But don’t come crying to me when things get worse.” With that, he disappeared deep into the forest, perhaps to the crime site, leaving us all standing there in stunned silence.
Lucas exhaled sharply, shaking his head. “That guy… What the hell is his deal?”
Isla’s POV"Isla, how dare you go against me?" Adrian's mouth rubbed against my neck, as he whispered possessively. The way he pressed me against the wall lovingly and passionately made me squirm."Adrian!" I finally gasped, grabbing his shirt."If you ever defy me, it won't be good!" His fangs graze over my soft skin, sending tingles over my body.I closed my eyes, waiting for him to bite me again.I knew this was a dream. A cruel one. But I couldn't wake up. I had no control over myself as I tossed and turned. And finally, the alarm snoozed, waking me up from my dream, thankfully.I shot up, breathing heavily. I slapped my face, wanting to dissipate the blood that had settled in my cheeks, darkening my blush. How could I dream about something like that? I felt disgusted.I was glad I had made sure to set my alarm, determined not to repeat yesterday’s mistakes. But this came in handy. With this dream, I would surely have failed to make it in time. But now I wasn’t going to give Adria
Isla’s POVThe knot in my stomach twisted tighter as the end of class approached, each tick of the clock sending a shiver down my spine. The thought of meeting Adrian alone after class was choking my insides. And yet I knew I had to.The irony was I didn’t trust him. But I couldn't separate myself from him either. How could I? Our every other interaction flicked between contempt and obsession. As soon as the bell rang, I took a deep breath. Even though this morning I had decided not to let him toy with me, I was walking right into his trap again.I was walking absent-mindedly when Lucas caught the shift in my demeanor. "Isla, are you okay?" He asked, snapping me out of my daze. His eyes were sharp, filled with concern."Yeah, I am fine," I replied nonchalantly. He wasn’t convinced but didn’t press further. "You know you can come to me if you need help. With anything," he added, his voice genuine.I nodded, appreciating his concern, but knowing this was something I had to face on my ow
Adrian's POVWatching Isla smile at Lucas ignited irrational anger, jealousy eating at me from the inside out."Why the hell has she never smiled at me like that?" The thought gnawed at me, fueling the fire inside my heart. I didn't know why, but I couldn’t stand it, seeing her warm up to someone else so easily, while I stood on the sidelines.I clenched my fists, calling her over restlessly. She ignored me at first, which only made it worse. When she finally turned, her defiance was clear in every step, every breath. She was deliberately testing my patience.Later, when I was waiting for her to meet after the class at the designated spot, she came late. And I could feel the smell of that new guy lingering over her. My blood boiled. He had just come into my pack unannounced and had become friends with Isla already. Why was she trusting him so much and not me?"Keep your distance from Lucas," I snapped, the words coming out harsher than I intended. Her eyebrows shot up in surprise befo
Isla’s POVThe shadow...I knew immediately that it was the same shadow from last night. That strange smell was too sharp and distinct for me to make a mistake. And what shocked me was that it was the same scent I had been experimenting with a while ago. Nightspire Bloom. My heart pounded with the discovery.Just then, the shadow moved away with great speed. What was it doing outside my window? What does it want from me? I had to find out and perhaps this was my best chance.Without thinking much, I jumped out of my window, something I was too used to as I sneaked out often. I chased behind the scent, with sheer determination."Don't be reckless," my wolf warned, her voice sharp in my mind. "You might be running right into their trap! We must alert others. It could be dangerous." She tried to reason with me.But indeed, I was reckless and overwhelmed with my determination not to lose it again."I can’t let go of this opportunity!" I shot back through the bond. "I need to find answers
Adrian's POVI poured water on my face again, wiping my face clean again. But it failed to wipe out the kiss from my memory. My mind kept replaying the kiss with Isla the moment I got back to my room in the pack house from the back mountains. It wasn't planned, nor was it a proper kiss. It was needy, rough, and urgent, as if I was possessed by someone. But it was me and my jealousy. The guilt from it gnawed at me.But underneath that, guilt was something far more unsettling. Desire. An attraction. Some weird feelings.I wanted to kiss her again, and this time, I wanted to savor her soft, plump, luscious lips. I wanted this kiss to be gentler and meaningful, and even affectionate."Admit it! You have fallen for her," my wolf said, its voice echoing in my head. "The mate bond is irresistible.""Shut up," I growled back. "I haven’t fallen for anyone. Elara just died, and you think I fell for Isla?""Keep telling yourself that," my wolf scoffed."I am just confused. They look the same," I
Isla's POV Lucas was gravely injured because of me. And it made my heart twist with guilt. He winced slightly as he shifted, trying to sit up, but when he noticed my expression, he forced a smile. "Isla!" a familiar voice thundered, making me snap. Adrian was here. I hadn’t noticed him at first, but there he was. When did he arrive? And how much had he seen? My breathing hitched, as I gulped hard nervously. But his eyes narrowed, darkening in anger. "Stay away from Lucas," Adrian's words echoed in my mind, and I stood up immediately, distancing myself from Lucas instinctively. How long had Adrian been watching us from a distance? His eyes locked with mine, intense, as if he were trying to read every thought in my head. That's when I heard a soft groan from Lucas, now standing beside me in a protective stance, his hands pressed against his wound. I felt guilty. Why did I react like that when I saw Adrian? I should be here for Lucas. He was my friend. He was my savior. He was in thi
Isla's POVI rushed to Adrian’s side, tearing a strip of cloth from my shirt to wrap around his leg. Blood soaked through the makeshift bandage immediately, but I had to do something. I had already given away my only medicine to Lucas.I could feel his eyes on me the whole time, watching me closely. I didn’t dare to meet his gaze."Why did you rush like that?" I muttered, "Why didn’t you wait for backup?"He groaned as I wrapped his leg. "Didn’t think I would need it."I shot him a glare. "Well, clearly not considering..." But before I could finish, Adrian’s hand grabbed mine, stopping me."Why were you out here with Lucas at night?" His voice was sharp, barely containing his anger. His eyes burned into mine, demanding an answer.I stiffened, trying to pull my hand free. But his grip only tightened. "I wasn’t with him. I was chasing the shadow," I replied, frustration rising. His gaze didn’t soften. "So how was Lucas with you? Do you think I am stupid, Isla?"I shot him a look. "Mayb
Isla's POVI quivered under his piercing gaze, her heart pounding as fear intertwined with confusion. My voice trembled as I finally confessed, but not entirely, “I… I accidentally discovered I could transform.” The words hung in the air, heavy and uncertain.Adrian's eyes darkened with frustration, his patience slipping away. "Lies! Still lies!"“I am not lying to you, Adrian. You are just too consumed by your jealousy to see the truth,” I whispered, trying to avert his gaze, but my voice lacked the conviction I needed. He didn't concede. Without warning, he cornered me, his grip firm yet not cruel. Tingles spiraled through my body, making my breath hitch. He towered over me, leaning closer. The shock of it left me breathless. But what came next made my body tense in ways I didn’t understand.Adrian's breath brushed against my ear, sending goosebumps as I bit my lip. He chuckled, his voice low and possessive as he whispered, “Then you must know by now… I am your mate.”His words stru
