Isla's POV
I rushed to Adrian’s side, tearing a strip of cloth from my shirt to wrap around his leg. Blood soaked through the makeshift bandage immediately, but I had to do something. I had already given away my only medicine to Lucas.
I could feel his eyes on me the whole time, watching me closely. I didn’t dare to meet his gaze.
"Why did you rush like that?" I muttered, "Why didn’t you wait for backup?"
He groaned as I wrapped his leg. "Didn’t think I would need it."
I shot him a glare. "Well, clearly not considering..."
But before I could finish, Adrian’s hand grabbed mine, stopping me.
"Why were you out here with Lucas at night?" His voice was sharp, barely containing his anger. His eyes burned into mine, demanding an answer.
I stiffened, trying to pull my hand free. But his grip only tightened. "I wasn’t with him. I was chasing the shadow," I replied, frustration rising.
His gaze didn’t soften. "So how was Lucas with you? Do you think I am stupid, Isla?"
I shot him a look. "Maybe. You are acting like one."
The way Adrian looked at me with pain, made me flinch. "Isla, I need to know," he said, his voice softer now, almost pleading. "Why Lucas? Why didn’t you come to me?"
"Stop it, Adrian. Lucas risked his life for me. You should be thanking him instead of—"
“Thanking him? For what? For being close to you? For being there for you instead of me?" He scoffed, not trying to hide his displeasure. "You didn’t listen to me,” he snapped. “You acted on your own and didn’t even tell me. But you had time to inform him.”
"What are you even talking about? I didn't even call you. But you are here!" I sighed, tired of his accusations.
"? Do I have to rely on anonymous notes to save you?" His eyes widened, as he grunted.
"What note?" I asked, ignoring his anger.
"Someone left a note outside my room asking me to save you?" For the first time, he spoke softly.
"And you don't know who? Don’t you find it unsettling that they knew where I was, in what situation I was… Maybe they didn’t ask you to save me, Adrian. It was a trap to lure you in so that they could kill us both!" I sighed, my mind reeling with who would have informed Adrian. I couldn’t help but wonder if more than one was involved in this conspiracy, and maybe someone from our pack was also behind them all.
"I don't care. If you had informed me…, " None of this would have happened" He whined.
I ignored his complaints. If he could bother about these trivial matters, then I should better focus on the important ones and not worry about his wound so much.
"The shadow," I muttered, trying to change the subject. "Did you see where it went?"
He shook his head. "It slipped away before I could catch up. I lost it somewhere near the borders. But it wore a black coat and had this strange smell."
My breath caught. For a second I wondered if I should tell him about Nightspire Bloom, but I couldn't find any reason to hide it from him. “Did it smell like the Nightspire Bloom, a rare plant unique to the West Fall Pack?”
His eyes flickered with surprise, and he grabbed my arm, forcing me to look at him. “How do you know about it? What are you not telling me? I told you to report everything back to me!”
“Adrian!" I screamed a little, tired of his childishness and jealousy. "I had just found it after I extracted the scent from Elara's belongings,” I replied, my voice calm but firm. “I think the person who killed Betty, killed Ela..." I stopped, unsure how he would react. But when he didn't even bat his eyes for some reason, I continued, "Some have been watching us, Adrian. Watching me.”
"Watching you?" He scanned my body, looking for any visible wounds. When he didn't see anything major, he sighed with relief.
"It was outside my window when I was experimenting," I replied honestly.
"It was outside your room?" His eyes narrowed, darkening with worry. "Why don't you tell me anything, Isla! You really trust him, don’t you? A stranger?! Don't you see, he is the main suspect?" He whined, shaking his head.
I pulled my arm free, glaring at him. He always rushed and made baseless accusations on the easiest target. “Just like how I am the main suspect in Elara's murder?" I puffed into the air, feeling rage build inside me.
"You know what, I shouldn't have told you about it. Lucas is injured protecting me. And I left him to check on you!" I hissed, trying to calm myself.
But when I couldn't, I continued ranting at Adrian. "And you think he is some killer? He was right there with us when the shadow moved past us!”
Adrian’s jaw clenched, his fury bubbling over. “You have known him for a few days, and you trust him more than me?” His voice was thick with jealousy, and now he wasn't even trying to hide his frustration and dislike for Lucas.
I didn't know how to respond, especially when he was asking me to trust him. How could I trust him? When did he do anything to earn that? But a part of him felt guilty for not trusting my mate.
"He is the only one from that pack who came to ours unexpectedly. And you have been spending all your time with him, trusting him!" He spat, letting out a deep breath.
"Adrian, it's not like what you think. He is a friend. He is helping me." I tried to make him understand, but he wasn't in the mood.
"Friend! Am I your enemy? Because otherwise why are you keeping so many secrets from me?" He frowned, grabbing my hand, and looking deep into my eyes as if searching for truths I had hidden from him. I looked away, not wanting to meet his gaze, nervous.
"And what about your shift?" Adrian’s voice dropped to a dangerous whisper, the question hanging between us like a blade. "You have already completed your first transformation, haven’t you? That silver wolf by the waterfall... that was you, wasn’t it?"
I froze. My heart pounded in my chest. His eyes locked onto mine, a sharp accusation gleaming in them. “What else are you hiding from me, Isla?”
Adrian's POV
Isla's belief in Lucas only fueled my jealousy. My fists clenched involuntarily as I watched the way she defended him, her eyes filled with conviction and trust. Trust she didn’t extend to me.
How could she so easily side with a stranger while deceiving me all this time? The thought of them together, her smile for him, with her relying on him... and only for him, fueled the fire burning inside me.
And she didn't even tell me about the scent or the shadow, but relied on Lucas!
"Why don't you tell me anything, Isla! You really trust him, don’t you? A stranger?! Don't you see, he is the main suspect?" I finally said, the words dripping with venom.
She kept brewing nonsense after nonsense, her trust in Lucas rock solid. It only triggered the storm inside me. I remembered the way they had looked at each other. And she was still wearing his shirt! The way she had tended to his wounds without a second thought.
And how she had hidden her wolf from me.
"And what about your shift?" I growled, my wolf pacing restlessly inside me. "You have already completed your first transformation, haven’t you? That silver wolf by the waterfall... that was you, wasn’t it?"
Her lips parted as if she were about to speak another lie. I couldn’t stop myself. I stepped closer, my voice lowering as the anger and hurt twisted into something darker.
"Don’t think you can just find happiness with him... My Elara didn't even get to live to have that chance," I spat, the mention of Elara sending a fresh surge of bitterness through me. "You want to lie to me? Hide things from me? Fine. But you’re not getting off that easily. You won’t forget what you owe me."
Her eyes widened, shock flickering across her face, but it was too late. I couldn’t let her go. Not after everything. If she was openly choosing Lucas over me, then I would make sure she suffered just like I had.
She would feel the same pain.
Isla's POVI quivered under his piercing gaze, her heart pounding as fear intertwined with confusion. My voice trembled as I finally confessed, but not entirely, “I… I accidentally discovered I could transform.” The words hung in the air, heavy and uncertain.Adrian's eyes darkened with frustration, his patience slipping away. "Lies! Still lies!"“I am not lying to you, Adrian. You are just too consumed by your jealousy to see the truth,” I whispered, trying to avert his gaze, but my voice lacked the conviction I needed. He didn't concede. Without warning, he cornered me, his grip firm yet not cruel. Tingles spiraled through my body, making my breath hitch. He towered over me, leaning closer. The shock of it left me breathless. But what came next made my body tense in ways I didn’t understand.Adrian's breath brushed against my ear, sending goosebumps as I bit my lip. He chuckled, his voice low and possessive as he whispered, “Then you must know by now… I am your mate.”His words stru
Isla’s POVI pressed my palm over my face, avoiding the sun's rays, shifting slightly on the rough floor of the cabin. I woke up in a daze, rubbing my eyes. I realized I wasn't in my room. I blinked, my heart racing as the memories of last night crashed over me. I blushed, feeling flustered."What have I done?" I contemplated in my mind, gulping hard, covering myself with the thin tattered shirt lying next to me.Adrian’s bite still tingled in my ear. The mate bond had taken over, pulling us together despite everything. I looked around and saw his tall frame leaning against the cabin door, his back to me, rigid and distant. Any warmth that the bond might have brought was quickly snuffed out when I saw his denial and frustration. The silence was deafening, making me even more nervous. I opened my mouth, but I couldn't quite figure out what to say. But before I could formulate any sentence, his cold, emotionless voice cut through the silence.“I won’t publicly acknowledge you as my mate
Adrian’s POVI couldn’t tear my eyes away from her.I kept telling myself that my desire was just a sick twist of fate. I only wanted her because she reminded me of my lost love, my Elara. But seeing her with Lucas, seeing how easily she trusted him, brought out something darker inside me. She wasn’t supposed to look at anyone else like that. She was supposed to be mine. Only mine. And last night? Last night changed everything for me.The night had taken on a life of its own. One moment, I had control. I had convinced myself that she was nothing more than a shadow of Elara. And the next moment, the mate bond had ripped that control away, leaving nothing but raw, undeniable need.Isla wasn’t Elara. And I knew it better than anyone else. The feelings I had for her were extreme and surreal, something I had never experienced before. And it was, in many ways, fulfilling. Because she was mine. The way her skin had felt against mine, how her soft gasps had matched my own... Damn it, it was m
Isla's POVI was on my way to the hospital when I passed by a flower shop. I looked outside and felt like getting a bouquet for Lucas. With this, my visit would look a little less selfish. As soon as I stepped inside, I spotted a familiar figure near the back of the store. Chloe moved gracefully through the shop. But before I could call out to her, she moved upstairs."Chlo…" I was about to follow when the shop owner appeared beside me with a warm smile.“The lovely young lady looking for something special today?" she asked, a little too generously. I wasn't used to being addressed like that.I hesitated, glancing toward the staircase where Chloe had vanished. “Just a bouquet of... carnations?" I replied, still distracted. “That was Chloe right? Does she live here? I saw her go upstairs."The shopkeeper’s smile widened, her eyes radiating with warmth and love. "Oh, yes. Chloe is my daughter.""We are classmates," I explained, though it felt odd saying that when I realized how little I
Adrian's POVI sat in my room in the pack house, trying to find some lead. Betty's was now the second death in the pack in such a short span. I compared all the evidence from Elara and Betty's cases, trying to find out some connection. Only one thing stood out clearly. Mandrake. That poisonous plant had been found at both crime scenes, its presence too deliberate to be a coincidence.I decided to send out an order to investigate the local flower shops for anyone purchasing Mandrake. Just then, a knock interrupted my thoughts. The girl who was sitting beside Isla in the healing and recovery class entered, her expression tight with urgency.I waved her in.“I am Chloe. Isla's friend. I need to talk to you, Alpha,” she said, her voice firm but laced with tension. My wolf stirred inside me restlessly at Isla's name. But I tried to maintain the indifference. I gestured for her to sit. But without wasting time on formalities, she jumped straight to the topic.“Isla told me about the mandrak
Isla's POVAfter a heavy discussion about the herbs and the murders and learning more about both the herbs from Lucas, I knew Nightspire Bloom wouldn't be easy to investigate. But Mandrake... that was the center of it all. Well, that should be our primary focus."Mandrake. Let's start by finding out who has been buying these secretly. Maybe then, we can have our answers..." I sighed. He gave me a small, tired smile. "Just... be careful. You know how dangerous this can be. Whoever is behind this seems to have their eyes on you now."I nodded, knowing the weight of the situation. Honestly, if I hadn't been dragged into this situation, perhaps I would have stayed in the corner like always. But now, I had to go to the bottom of all of this to clear my name. That's when my eyes darted outside the window, and I realized I had been there for a while now.I stood up, feeling a little uneasy. "I will visit again soon. And I will update you on everything. Just focus on recovering."I was about
Isla's POV"Stop! What are you doing?" I glared at Adrian, my heart racing. There was no way I was letting him take Stefan.I looked at Stefan, slightly nodding at him. I didn't need words to tell him that I had his back. He was tied up, panic etched across his face.Adrian came across, now taking the cuff in his hand, seething with fury.“Get your hands off him!” I shouted, my voice trembling. Adrian didn’t even glance my way, his gaze locked onto Stefan as if he were prey.“Enough!” Adrian’s voice sliced through the air like a knife. “We have evidence. He is the one who bought the mandrake. He’s behind all of it, the murders, Isla. Your sister’s death.”I shook my head, the words hitting me like a wave. For a second, I was baffled, unable to formulate any words. How could Stefan have anything to do with Mandrake? Why would he ever hurt Elara? This didn’t add up at all. I knew Stefan. I know he wasn’t capable of something like this.So when Adrian dragged Stefan, my walls were up.St
"Fine," Adrian spat. "Then you can go to prison with him."Isla's POVI scoffed, feeling hurt, despite knowing very well he didn't care about anyone except Elara. He didn't even flinch when he said that, his eyes looking at me with fury. But he had no idea when I offered to go to jail, it wasn't out of some naive impulse. It was because I knew him better than anyone. Stefan was not capable of anything so gruesome. But Stefan suddenly came in between us and shut me down so quickly I barely had time to process his words."Don’t," Stefan said, his voice tight, eyes burning with the weight of the situation. "You shouldn’t make a decision like that for me, especially when it has nothing to do with you.`"I clenched my fists, frustration bubbling inside me. "But it has everything to do with me! You’re my best friend, Stefan. I know you. You would never..." Stefan’s eyes softened for a second as if he was surprised. "Isla, you don't have to go to jail to help me..."Before I could respond,
