"Did they say there would be another guest today?" a man greeted as Nicholas entered the restaurant's kitchen. The man appeared exhausted, like someone who hadn't eaten for days.
"She can't make it," Nicholas replied, putting on his uniform, donning a mask, washing his hands, and starting his work. He tried hard not to think about Alesya, who he considered foolish.
"Oh, my boss is so enthusiastic about work when she's here," the bespectacled man sarcastically remarked before leaving Nicholas to continue his tasks.
Nicholas shrugged, grabbed a knife, and began his duties. Despite being an owner, he still dived into the kitchen to prepare some dishes. He didn't want to stand idly by just because he was a leader.
"I'll just sell myself!"
"Go ahead!"
The earlier argument echoed.
"Damn it!" Nicholas cursed, catching the attention of the other chefs when they heard his voice.
"Why, sir?" one of them approached Nicholas, grabbing a tissue as he noticed blood dripping from Nicholas's hand.
"It's nothing."
Nicholas pressed on the scrape on his index finger. Luckily, it was just a superficial cut, not reaching the bone.
"It seems like you have a lot on your mind. You should rest instead of working with injured hands."
"You're right. I'll go to my room. I'll take care of this wound too," Nicholas replied with a faint smile, then left before the others could see him in such a bewildered state.
Alone in his room, Nicholas tended to his wound. He applied ointment and wrapped it with a bandage. He didn't know where his mind had wandered, but Alesya's words in the car earlier had truly disturbed his peace.
"Sell myself, sell myself! That's all she kept saying!" Nicholas exclaimed, removing and tossing his glasses onto the table. He massaged his throbbing temples, courtesy of Alesya's antics.
Alesya was just an ordinary girl, a bit innocent and sweet. She was his brother Bryan's wife and, there were no romantic feelings involved, yet Nicholas found himself wanting to protect Alesya.
He wanted to make her happy, even though they had only met two days ago. They had slept under the same blanket, without any barriers between them. Alesya wasn't afraid, and he didn't feel uncomfortable or opposed to it.
Why was that? And now... with Alesya gone, everything felt bleak. His mind was filled with thoughts of her, saying she would sell herself, even though Nicholas was sure she wouldn't.
"But what if she did?!" Nicholas stopped massaging his forehead. "Nicholas, you fool!" he scolded himself. He thought of Alesya, so naive, trusting, and kind to anyone who showed her a little attention, like him.
They had just met, and Nicholas knew very little about her. Alesya didn't seem to have any fears at all. What if she met a scoundrel on the street? Offering her a little money and promising to take her home? Alesya, who was desperate, would probably agree if her body was requested as payment, especially considering she needed a man's seed.
Nicholas got up, grabbed his car keys, and immediately set out to find Alesya. If she was delayed or something had happened, the worst-case scenarios he had imagined could become a reality.
Alesya felt a slight relief. She could sell her phone, even though it wasn't much, and she was losing her expensive phone. It didn't matter as long as she could eat and... Alesya glanced towards the bus terminal. Her eyes fixed on the bus heading to her hometown.
Without much thought, Alesya took a step forward. She headed to the bus and took a seat. Her determination was set to go back, even if it was just for one day. She wanted to relieve the longing for her parents, hoping it would make her feel a bit better than usual.
Just before dusk, Alesya arrived in her hometown, where she was born and raised with abundant love. Even though everything had disappeared before she turned twenty-one.
Tears couldn't be held back as the bus carrying her entered the border gate. Amid her tears, Alesya managed a smile, remembering how she used to pick up her father there when her first love had a job out of town.
Aditama, who wasn't comfortable driving long distances, preferred to travel by bus or be picked up by his friend's driver from the city. So, when Aditama arrived at the border, Alesya would pick him up on her beloved automatic motorbike. They would enjoy the village roads, father and daughter playfully bantering with each other.
"Oh no... where?!"
Alesya panicked. She checked the plastic bag she was carrying when she got off the bus. "I'm sure it was here!"
Alesya was scared now. When she couldn't find a single coin in the plastic bag containing some small snacks, she remembered that was where she had put the money from selling her phone.
However, the money had disappeared without a trace. There was no sign of it whatsoever.
Alesya looked around, seeing some horse cart drivers helping villagers get on their carts. Unfortunately, none of them were familiar to Alesya because they were from the neighboring village.
If only she recognized someone, Alesya could have hitched a ride home and figured out how to pay back later.
"Hai, Yaya!"
Alesya turned toward the voice. Instead of being happy that someone was calling her, her expression turned sour.
"Village head's wife. How are you?" Alesya reluctantly shook hands with the village leader's wife.
"I'm good, Al. Wow, you've become even prettier since you've been living in the city. It's only been two days, Ya."
Alesya just nodded.
"Oh, by the way, this is Diki. My dear son. If only you weren't married yet, I'd want to match you two up so Diki would stop getting drunk all the time. Unfortunately, your father has a lot of debt, Al." The woman kept talking despite Alesya's clear displeasure.
Especially as she saw Diki getting closer to them.
"It's okay, Bu. I have no expectations or feelings for him. Besides, we don't know each other. Just greetings, nothing more."
"But Diki is in love with you, Al."
"But I'm not, Bu. Hehehe," Alesya brushed it off. She wanted to chase them away, but unfortunately, Diki was already in front of her with his pride and joy, his big motorcycle. Diki had been hoping for Alesya to fall in love with him for a long time.
However, unfortunately, while other village girls pursued Diki, Alesya distanced herself because she didn't like seeing Diki show off all the time. If it had been the result of her own hard work, Alesya might have been willing to be friends.
"Shall I give you a ride?" Diki extended his hand, asking Alesya to hop on.
"No, thanks. Someone is coming to pick me up."
"Who's picking you up? Your father is no longer here, Devin has left with another woman. Your husband? I'm sure your relationship isn't going well if you came all the way here alone!"
"Don't judge people's lives, Dik. Because what you see is only a small part of..."
"Alright, alright. Let's not argue. The night is beginning, let's go back!" the village head's wife urged, demanding that Alesya get on. "You go back with Diki, and I'll take a motorcycle taxi behind."
"But, Miss..."
"No 'buts.' Do you want to stay here alone? Come on, get on!"
Diki flashed a smile as Alesya reluctantly got on. She knew it wouldn't do any good to refuse, especially since Diki and his mother were people who didn't like to be contradicted.
"This isn't the way to my house!" Alesya patted Diki's shoulder as the route deviated from the actual direction.
"We'll just wait there. I won't harm you. The usual road is under construction, and there are heavy machines blocking it. It's better to take this detour."
"But this is too far!" Alesya was getting anxious now. Instead of getting closer, Diki was taking her farther away from her home.
Alesya didn't know what Diki's intentions were. About fifteen minutes passed before Diki finally brought Alesya to his house.
"Can I use your restroom, Al?" Diki took off his helmet. Boldly, he entered Alesya's porch.
The house that used to be bright and full of love was now empty. Dark, just like Alesya's life.
"It's useless for you to come in. I don't have the key."
"Then what?"
"There's no 'then.' I came here to meet my parents, nothing more. And if you don't mind, you can leave before people start thinking badly of us."
Alesya walked to the backyard and sat on a wooden chair. She gazed at the withered flowers, just like her life.
"If there's no key, why are you here?"
Unexpectedly by Alesya, Diki sat beside Alesya. Deliberately pressing his body closer so he could make contact with Alesya's arm.
118Alesya shifted. "Do not close. I have a husband." Pushing Diki's chest, when the man wanted to hug him."That's good, if you already have a husband... Even if you're pregnant, no one will be angry because they will think that our baby is your husband's child. I'm just here to help so that you will soon be blessed with offspring. It's very good, isn't it, working together with your husband?”"You're crazy!" Alesya struggled. When Diki grabbed both of her wrists. Keep trying to get away from the guy.“I'm not crazy, Al. It's just that I'm crazy about you, but youInstead she married that damn city boy. So darling, there's no harm in me tasting it and helping out."Alesya shook her head. Still struggling, hoping Diki would let him go.However, all of Alesya's efforts were in vain. Instead of letting go, Diki managed to lock Alesya's wrist."Help!! Someone help…”Bugh!! Bugh!!Afraid that someone would hear Alesya's screams, Diki hit Alesya on the back of the neck. Twice until Alesya
119As Nicholas entered the village road, he let out a long sigh. He received a text message from Bryan, which he initially found annoying. However, he drove faster along the desolate village road after reading Bryan's message."Pick up Alesya at her house. Don't ask too many questions. If you want to know what happened to her, wait until she regains consciousness."Nicholas tightly gripped the steering wheel. He stepped on the gas as hard as he could, ignoring the rough road full of rocks. For him, reaching Alesya quickly was more important."Where is she?"Nicholas restrained Bryan, who had just come out of Alesya's house with many documents in his arms."Inside," Bryan responded nonchalantly, walking away before any suspicion could arise about what he and their father were doing there. He didn't wait for anything, let alone bid farewell to Nicholas; Bryan went home first. Before Bryan hit the gas, he briefly considered whether to wait for Alesya or not. His sense of humanity was sl
120Very slowly, Nicholas released Alesya's grip. Fix the blanket, before leaving. He glanced at the clock hanging on the wall, it was past midnight. No wonder Nicholas' waist felt stiff and numb.“Diki… who is he?” Nicholas muttered. Her brain was thinking, guessing who Alesya said Diki was."Later." Nicholas shook his head. Wanting to focus on Diki in the middle of the night is certainly useless. It's better to finish it tomorrow morning.Rather than taking care of Diki, whose name could be shared by many people, Nicholas would be better off checking the kitchen. Looking for food ingredients to process. I'm afraid that soon Alesya will wake up and be hungry.Alesya blinked. His eyes still sting, his body hurts when he moves. However, he still tried to sit up. Remembering what happened to him, he arrived at the guest room in his own house.Alesya sighed. Rubbing his face roughly, he imagined Diki's passionate gaze who wanted to take his purity. He couldn't believe that the man could
121"I haven't been able to figure out the purpose of that loan yet. Even up to this moment, I don't know what kind of business our fathers were involved in. As far as I know, your father helped my dad find companies or individuals to use their services or buy heavy equipment. And just so you know, my father couldn't have casually used the house as collateral without my consent."Nicholas rubbed his chin. "And one more thing, Al. It wasn't me who saved you, but Bryan.""Bryan?" Alesya repeated, afraid she might have misunderstood the information."Yes, Bryan. He asked me to come. If he hadn't come here, I can guarantee that I wouldn't have been able to save you because I was still quite far from here. But Bryan, he found you undressed. That means he had a legitimate reason to come here, not just to save you.""Wait!" Alesya threw back the blanket and jumped out of bed. Ignoring her still-aching body, she rushed to her father's room."Why, Al?"Nicholas followed her, startled by the si

122There was a subtle difference in the implied messages. Nicholas didn't expect Alesya to understand his words.Nicholas also didn't care if Alesya thought he couldn't be with the person he loved because their genders were the same. For Nicholas, no matter how others judged him, it had no impact. In fact, he was grateful that with the label of being gay, he could get so close to a wonderful girl like Alesya. Not knowing how it started, Alesya, who was usually chatty, suddenly fell silent. She no longer spoke and just focused on the food in front of her. Occasionally, she glanced at Nicholas but couldn't bring herself to start a conversation again because she realized she had hoped for the man who loved someone else."Nicholas...""Yes?" Nicholas turned to her."Um... it's nothing." Alesya shook her head. She went back to looking down and focusing on her food. She wanted to ask but hesitated, afraid Nicholas would be offended if he heard her desire."Just say it, Al. I won't get mad
123"Please, Nicholas, don't prolong this issue!" Diki's mother pleaded, kneeling down. Afraid that her family's reputation would be tarnished, she was willing to humble herself in front of Nicholas. "Earlier, you asked Diki to apologize, right? I'll make sure he comes to your house and apologizes to Alesya.""I... I..."Nicholas raised his hand, silencing the middle-aged woman. He couldn't accept any excuses. So, Nicholas walked away. It was up to Diki now. Coming to apologize would be better. Even if not, Nicholas was satisfied with teaching him a lesson, leaving him unable to move and with split lips.Furthermore, Nicholas couldn't involve the police in this case. He had no witnesses, and the evidence had been given to Diki. The CCTV he mentioned was just a bluff. As for Bryan, there was no guarantee he would agree to be a witness. So, he had to rely on his own strength to teach Diki a lesson, even if it meant his hand was a bit swollen and bruised. That was fine as long as he was
124“what it's”Alesya lifted a box wrapped in gift paper. "This?" She sat on the edge of the bed and opened it for Nicholas. "This is a gift I prepared for Devin's birthday.""His birthday?""Yes, Devin's and mine fall on the same date and month. We always exchange gifts on our birthdays. So, you can use this as replacement clothes and as a gift for our meeting. Try it on!" Alesya handed over the clothes and pants inside the box, along with an expensive wristwatch for Nicholas."This is for me? Thank you so much. I hope this can be a fresh start for us.""You mean?" Alesya inquired."I have no specific meaning. Don't read too much into it. Well, I'll change my clothes first, hehehe." Nicholas rubbed his neck.Alesya nodded, smiling slightly as she bid farewell to Nicholas into the bathroom. She waited for him to finish with his new clothes.Honestly, there were still many questions Nicholas wanted to ask, but he'd wait. He wanted to put on the clothes first before any potential "yes"
Gibran continued, "As for our divorce, I've already agreed to it. We'll proceed with the legal process, and you'll be free to start a new chapter in your life. I hope you find the happiness you deserve."The conversation between Viska and Gibran marked the beginning of the end of their tumultuous marriage. While their emotions were still raw, they had come to a mutual understanding that it was time to move on and seek happiness elsewhere.Gibran's frustration and pent-up emotions poured out as he defended his actions. He felt betrayed by Viska, who had consistently pushed him away and made unfavorable comparisons with Nicholas. Their relationship had become a battleground of insecurities, and Gibran had sought solace with Shabila.Viska's accusations stung, but Gibran was determined to make her understand the context of his actions. He continued, "Viska, I don't want to justify what I did, but it was a result of our broken marriage. We both contributed to its downfall. I needed someth
190"Also," Bryan paused, kissing Silvi's lips briefly."Don't forget that the night we were together, I can assure you, it's my child."Silvi shook her head. "It's not Devin's child. Do you think after that night, I didn't do anything with other men? Did you really think that night was the only time someone touched me? No, there have been many other nights with so many men because I felt like I wasn't pure anymore. So I was free to do it with anyone since my life was already a mess.""S-so... instead of slightly more ruining myself, and the last time it was done to me was by Devin. That's why he's willing to take responsibility. He's also convinced that this is his child."Bryan let out a bitter laugh, releasing Silvi from his embrace. "Is that so?" He loosened his tie, which had felt suffocating after hearing Silvi's explanation. "Let's prove that what you said is true." He took off the suit jacket that clung to his body.“W-what are you doing?” Silvi stepped back. Hugging her own b
189"No way! I won't leave until I meet Gibran. He has to take responsibility for this child," Shabila insisted, refusing to budge. She held onto Viska and stood her ground."Leave, I said! Go!"Viska couldn't bear Shabila's stubbornness and forcefully pulled her arm, nearly causing Shabila to stumble."What's wrong with you!" Shabila pushed away Viska's hand and fixed her disheveled hair. "Are you afraid your husband's actions will be known to your parents? Or is it that you refuse to accept the truth?" Shabila began to rant."I don't understand what you're saying. Now leave!" Viska demanded."Wait, Viska! Mom wants to ask this woman something." Viska's mother restrained her daughter and turned to Shabila. "Why did you let my granddaughter get pregnant? Don't you know he's already married? What do you want from us? Money?"Shabila seethed with anger. Her dignity felt insulted when the middle-aged woman mentioned money."Do you think I'm a lowly woman who just surrenders her body to a
188Shabila spent the whole day in frustration, angry that she couldn't meet Gibran at his cafe. She paced back and forth in her room, thinking of ways to meet him."Do you think you can avoid me forever? You won't be able to, Gibran. I have to make you take responsibility for the child I'm carrying. You won't be able to escape. Just wait and see."Shabila clenched her fists, planning a thousand ways to meet Gibran. "If I can't find you at the cafe, I'll come to your house. Let's see if you can still avoid me," she muttered to herself.Gibran decided to visit the club where he had met Shabila some time ago. He had a bad feeling about Shabila's visit to his cafe and wanted to find out what had really happened between them that night. Honestly, Gibran didn't remember much because he had been heavily intoxicated that night.Upon arriving at the club, Gibran called one of the waitresses and conveyed his request to meet with the club's owner."I'd like to discuss something important with y
187"What brand would you like, Miss?" The employee asked while displaying several different brands of pregnancy tests.Shabila looked puzzled, which only fueled the employee's suspicions. "Is this your first time buying a pregnancy test?" she guessed with a condescending glance."Y-yes," Shabila replied hesitantly. Seeing the employee looking down on her, Shabila's heart began to boil. "I am already married, just so you know. Here's my ID," she said abruptly, opening her wallet and showing her ID card, which still stated her marital status as MARRIED. Her divorce from Arya was only religious; it wasn't legally recognized yet.Seeing the ID placed on the counter, the pharmacy employee became flustered. She was torn between embarrassment and guilt. "I'm s-sorry, Miss, I didn't mean to—""It's fine, I understand!" Shabila retorted sharply, then pointed towards the pregnancy tests. "So, which one is the best?" she asked. She deliberately didn't want to prolong the issue since she wanted
186Several days had passed, and today was the ceremonial bath event for Silvi. Everything was well-prepared, and the guests were moved by the event, which was expertly guided by the paid organizers, arranged by Silvi's parents. Silvi's large family wore matching light green kebaya, while Devin's family, who were present, wore light blue kebaya. The event was conducted with great solemnity, and Silvi looked beautiful despite wearing makeup that wasn't too flashy. This ceremony included many symbols and motifs that served as lessons or guidelines for the couple, influencing their married life. These symbols or motifs mainly conveyed advice and useful insights for the newlyweds' life together. That's why Mama Silvi insisted on holding the ceremonial bath event, even though Silvi and Devin had been married before. In addition to the food ordered for the guests and relatives, the organizers had prepared specific dishes usually served during this ceremonial bath event. These included tumpe
185Meanwhile, Silvi and Devin listened to the doctor's explanations during the examination. Silvi's pregnancy was already at three weeks. The doctor prescribed vitamins and anti-nausea medication since Silvi mentioned she often felt dizzy and nauseous. Devin didn't ask any questions because it was his first time in a obstetrician's office. He was confused about how to react. Silvi was the one who asked all the questions.Silvi got her next appointment scheduled, and then they left. Devin and Silvi went to the hospital's pharmacy to pick up the prescribed medicines first. Then, Devin asked Silvi where she wanted to go."I don't know. I just feel like lying down in my room.""Why's that? Don't you want to go out together?" Devin asked softly. They were now in the car. "How about having ice cream and buying some new sleepwear for you?""What's the point of buying sleepwear?""Because you're pregnant, and I want you to sleep comfortably. How about it?""I don't want to," Silvi said, maki
184As a father, whose heart wouldn't break upon learning that his daughter is pregnant with no official partner by her side? He felt like a terrible father, willing to do anything as long as the man who impregnated his daughter, Silvi, would take responsibility.Pregnancy is never an easy journey for a woman, especially without a husband by her side. The man Silvi referred to as the father finally decided to find Devin, the man who should be held accountable for what happened to Silvi. He took a taxi to Devin's whereabouts, hoping that he would indeed be there. Impatiently sitting in the taxi, the weary-looking man, no longer in his youth, stared at his phone screen. The journey from the city to the village was quite long, which was why he opted for a taxi. Besides, he didn't want any unpleasant conversations about Silvi if he had brought his driver along.Fortunately, he found out about Silvi's pregnancy before it was too late, or who knows what might have happened. He sighed wearil
183Nicholas didn't want anything to happen to their unborn child. So, he tried his best to grant her wishes. Besides, Alesya's request was relatively easy to fulfill, and it had been quite some time since they had visited her hometown."Are you happy?" Nicholas asked.Alesya turned and nodded. "I've really missed my hometown. As nice as it is to live in the city, the hometown is the number one place to visit," Alesya replied. "Besides, all my childhood memories are buried there."Hearing Alesya's response, Nicholas could only smile. He, who had lived in the city since childhood, never experienced life in the village. So, he didn't fully understand what Alesya meant. In his mind, Alesya might just miss the peaceful atmosphere of the village because the city was quite noisy."Get some rest; I'll wake you up when we arrive," Nicholas said after a moment of silence."Okay."Alesya adjusted her seating position to make herself more comfortable. She also slightly reclined her seat to make
