Chapter Forty-Two

My eyes opened well before my alarm, my body used to its traditional 5:00AM wakeup. Since there was no point in trying to go back to sleep, I headed to the gym, enjoying the early morning run in solitude. No one ever used these hotel gyms besides me, at least not this early. 

My phone didn’t have any new messages, and I chalked it up to that kid going back upstairs for more. She probably just fell asleep, Mack, it was late. Stop thinking the worst, my conscious tried to tell me. Besides, I hadn’t responded to her when I told her I would call. Why wouldn’t she send me a message first?

I couldn’t believe it, though, I never gave people the benefit of the doubt. That was one of my downfalls when it came to having relationships. Unfortunately, that was because most humans were terrible, and could never be trusted or held accountable for anything worthwhile.
