Elaine’s POV

I took a deep breath, drawing strength from the warmth of Killian's embrace. The gravity of their discussion about rogues and traitorous elders weighed heavily on me, but something else tugged at my heart.

I glanced over at Jake, his calm demeanor a stark contrast to the turmoil in my mind. I needed to be alone with Killian, to connect with him without the weight of their conversation looming over us.

"Jake," Killian said, drawing his attention. "Could you leave us for a bit? I'll contact you later. I need some time with my mate."

Jake's eyes flickered with understanding, and he gave a slight nod. "Of course," he said, gathering the last of his papers. "I'll be in touch." With a reassuring smile, he left the room, closing the door quietly behind him.
