Chapter 6

As she turned to leave the morgue, my mother tossed a final remark over her shoulder, "Let us know when everything is handled."

Throughout the entire process, there wasn’t a trace of grief or hesitation on her face. She looked almost relieved as if she had finally solved a long-standing problem.

Leisha stood there, stunned, tears streaming down her face, her emotions a tangled mess with nowhere to go.

And my spirit, like a breeze-blown shadow, wavered in the air, never receiving the motherly love I had longed for but had never felt.

If I hadn’t died, Leisha might never have shown her true colors.

Back at home, my mother carried on as if nothing had happened.

"Sweetheart, what would you like for dinner tonight? I'll make it for you." Her voice carried an unexpected hint of tenderness.

In another time, this scene would have made my younger self feel blessed.
