“All these years... has everything I’ve done for you been nothing but a burden and cruelty to you?” My mother’s strength finally gave way, and she sank to the floor, burying her face in her hands, her sobs breaking the silence.

Leisha looked at her, a strange feeling flickering in her heart—perhaps a sliver of sympathy, the kind that a victor might fleetingly feel for the defeated.

But she quickly looked away.

“Remember this day,” she sneered, her voice filled with mockery and contempt. “Remember the humiliation and helplessness of being utterly destroyed by your so-called love and expectations.”

I reached out, wanting to touch my mother's hair, but there was nothing I could do.

The room fell into a tense silence once more, like the calm before a storm.
