I went up to my room that night and sat on the edge of my bed for a long time before I picked up my phone, turning it over in my hands, rehearsing and discarding a dozen different versions of what I actually wanted to say. Something honest. Something that didn't ask for more than I actually meant to ask for yet. I want to give them a proper fair well. Could you at least give me that?” I asked. He let go of my face and took a step back. I bit the inside of my cheek as I stood there waiting for him to answer.

“Please, I need to check up on them. You didn't return my phone, remember?’ “I'll have Kaid send it to you…” “Please… I want to go.” I pleaded. “Just for one day.”

I look up at the elder, who watches me with unmistakable pity etched into his wrinkled face. “May I make one final request?” I ask. His gaze hardens slightly. I understand—slaves like me are not meant to overstep. Still, I try. “Go on.” “I request an official permit to leave the Northern Pavilion,” I say firmly. He pauses, as though weighing something unseen. “For the sake of political stability,” I add before he can question me.

I sent a single text, hoping it didn’t sound like he owed me anything, but I needed this to be done. Me: I need a favor.
