Chapter Eighty-One - Khai

Suddenly Whitney got loose from her husband and charged toward Roman. I knew she couldn’t hurt her even if she wanted to. She pointed a sharp accusatory finger at her chest and poked her around. Roman was so weak each jab nudged her back.“You are a dark omen on this pack. All you bring is death and darkness. Your name is heavy with implication. Rome was not built in a day but it fell quickly. Destruction and death are your tail. Leave us or we will make you leave.”Roman looked like she would cry at any moment but it was because she had been crying all day. She looked frail, her face was gaunt and her small figure was wrapped in a fleece. She stepped closer to Whitney, got really close to her face. Whitney was a head taller than her but the look on Roman’s face implied she was the one looking down on her.“I’ve always thought you hated me but now I am certain. I’m happy we can finally be honest with each other,” Roman spoke with a low voice, sour with bitterness. She stepped aside. I

Chapter Eighty-Two

I thought I had suffered enough heartache to be unphased by this but this was a real pain, a real disappointment. I had started to believe again. I knew Yaga was my goddess but she had become some part of my mind more than the one who rules my world – then Khai prayed and it all got better and I could feel her all-knowing power again but that was a farce - some kind of joke.I spent the whole day in bed, using sleep as the only getaway from this pain."I'll be back soon I promise. Twelve wolves are outside to watch the perimeter of the house. My mother will be here. I need to go sort out some business," Khai spoke with strain in his voice."I'll be right back, I promise,” he said when he came to kiss my forehead.I pulled his face to my lips and kissed him. He smiled wearily and closed the door behind him.I didn’t need to hear it, I knew it – Khai was tired of his sick fiancé. Always in bed, always in pain. I wish I could get better or find a way to purge my system of this sickness b

Chapter Eighty-Three

My body had already forgotten its pain. My mind and every part of me felt free and released. The only thing that lingered was that dark omen, heavy on my shoulders and body. My back started to hurt from the weight of it but I was grateful it wasn’t the poison. The door budged again, the wood splintering as it bulged. I should’ve ran away but couldn’t help the strong feeling that I was exactly where I was supposed to be."Hello?" I called. Then everything went still until I heard a scratching sound from behind the door. The door shook hazardously and I jumped back. The silence returned and for a while, I thought I had imagined all the sounds and breaking. I stuck my ear to the door to listen. Something in there was in sync with me. A heartbeat, at the same rate as mine. Our hearts weren’t beating slow, they were steady, fast if anything else. I knocked again and something shifted in there or someone. Why was someone in there? I quickly kicked the door and fell back as pain exploded in

Chapter Eighty-Four

My eyes fluttered open to a warm light. A small sting remained in my head but the rest of my body was fine again. I breathed out in relief as I sat up on the couch and looked out the window into the field. I wasn't having one of those realistic dreams again, was I?I really passed outside, right?"Hello," a deep voice snapped my head in its direction. From the staircase came down a man, tall, dark olive skin and water dripping from his black shoulder-length hair, down to his defined chest. He was built like a god, breathtaking and without imperfection with skin a sculpture made of bronze. He looked like he ate steak and eggs for every meal the way he was so brawny. Around his V line was a towel which revealed his toned calves. I couldn’t stop myself from taking every drop of him like a glass of water on a hot day. His lips were plump with a heavy lower lip.He noticed me analysing his handsome face and smiled. His eyes blinked tiny drops away from his eyelashes and I noticed it. I not

Chapter Eighty-Five - Khai

I paced back and forth in the house after I found something to wear. What had happened? How had this happened? How did I let this happen? How did my mother let this happen? Who set him free?"Khai?" Roman called from the kitchen. At once, I approached her and cupped her face in my hands."Are you okay? Did he hurt you?" Roman blinked oddly. My foolish rage had consumed me so much that I forgot what was important; Roman. "Yeah, I'm okay, don't worry about me. Are you okay?""Stay away from him, he's dangerous," I warned her.I pushed past her and out to the porch.“You stay outside!” I shouted at his wolf form amid the garden. He was exactly the way I last saw him. Nothing had changed. I went back into the house and Roman was jittery, bouncing between people as she asked her endless questions."Who is he? Is he a really Traga?" she asked. My mother turned from the tap with a kettle full of water. Her lips shut like they were sewn together. "I told you to watch over her and you coul

Chapter Eighty-Six - Khai

“It’s automatic,” I said.We sat on the bed next to each other. Her eyes glittered in curiosity, her lips so plump I could kiss her, but it was not the time for such things because we would go all the way. With the wedding only a few days away, the anticipation was basically killing me. She seemed to be growing more beautiful by the day."Wait, is the pain gone?" I asked her and cupped her face. She looked down and bit her lower lip curtly, if I blinked I could've missed it."I don't know... I'm fine now," she said. She sounded confused which I did not understand but I let her be. I took my eyes off her and looked through the open blinds of my window. The summer air was still outside.“The death of an alpha instates a new one automatically. As soon as I watched my father draw his last breath, I became alpha. When things happen as they should and the helm is passed through the ceremony, the transformation from a normal wolf to alpha is gradual and almost painless but when it came on me

Chapter Eighty-Seven - Khai

She was quiet then. Her tense shoulders dropped and she started rubbing my arm.“I wasn’t planning on keeping him there forever, Roman. Only until we were ready to take him back in.”“You guys were planning on forgiving him?” she asked incredulously.“Yolanda hoped. She always vouched for his redemption, so much so that I almost thought it was possible. I see now that it was the absence, when he was out of sight it was easy to imagine a utopia where we forgive him and we live happily ever after, but seeing him made it clear that will never happen.”I felt him from miles away, that he wasn't trapped. That heavy dark aura he always had since we were kids only tripled in size when he killed my father. I could always feel him, even when he was in the bunker, I just chose to ignore him.Truly, I believed that if we all forgot him or ignored him we would be able to forgive him or just simply forget him. We were forgetting him until Roman arrived and turned everything upside down. Her curiou

Chapter Eighty-Eight - Khai

Roman and I sat in the bathtub together, her body sitting on mine and I held her close. It was always better to ignore things for a moment before I returned to straighten them out. This was such a big thing, I didn't have the emotion to face it. What would I do with Malcolm? What about this baby thing for the River Crescents? Roman's poison? I just wanted to stay in this moment with Roman. She began laughing."What?" I smiled, assuming it would be just as funny to me."I'm realizing that your parents were last-dayers," she laughed."Last-dayers?"The steam on the mirror and glass surfaces was thinning as the water became colder but our bodies kept the other warm."Wolves who store up things and burrow holes in the ground to stay in when the world explodes."I chuckled."The world explodes? Is that how the world will end in Sun Wolf world?" I laughed."Well, we were told that the stars will fall out of the sky and everything will explode. Makes the whole hoarding and hole digging usele

Chapter Eighty-Nine

I kept calling out his name but he never returned. I stepped out of the bathtub and dried myself. By the time I entered the room he was gone.If you’re going to tell someone off you better stand for it. What did he mean I was acting like a bitch? I was dying, how was I supposed to act?I sighed as I lathered my body in lotion. Was he onto something. Was I being ungrateful and self-piteous?I felt doomed and everything didn’t matter. Khai’s prayer had given me hope in a future and the world was bright again but when that fell through, I didn’t know how to act or feel. Any words of encouragement or home were void and I felt nothing most of the time.I wore a flower dress and went downstairs to sit on the porch and watch how the sun set and birth the moon.Maybe it was the baby thing. Maybe it was everything. Azraels, Falcon, poison, River Crescents, Malcolm and his role – it was too much and I was no help in any shape or form. I kept my eyes on the stars to at least lift myself from th

Chapter Ninety

Khai was far away. He was the reason I sat outside. He was out there again, avoiding me and everything.Malcolm entered the house without a worry on his face, certain no one was around to turn him away.He was dressed in hunter-green pants and a grey Jeep shirt. His hair flowed effortlessly around his face, curling slightly at the edges. He was the first to take his seat.“I can’t wait to see what you made. You were always the best cook,” he smiled.Linda… cracked a smile and… rustled his hair. The whole scene struck me and overtook me. Linda was smiling effortlessly, not because of Greg or her sons but someone else. Did she like Malcolm more than Khai? Why did I feel betrayed by this? He did say they were cool. I stood frozen at the door as I watched Malcolm’s excitement and Linda’s… joy?His glee was childlike as he waited to see what Linda might plate before him.“Pot roast! You’re a star!” he said with hands pressed on his cheeks.“It’s your favorite isn’t it,” she smiled. He squee
