Chapter Seventy-One

As Khai slammed the door my heart beat out of my chest, desperate to follow him and press him into a corner. What did I have to do to be told the truth around here? I was obedient and quiet and now I was dying yet no one felt the need to tell me anything.Khai was selfish. He knew everything there was to know about me, even to the point of study yet when I asked something I was pushing him.I poured out my heart about everything I went through. He knew in disgusting detail how my father died, my sisters, my mother, my brothers, my whole clan. I was sure he could sketch out the exact image of that day in his book. But I stayed in bed. I wasn't in pain but decided to enjoy the serene silence of normalcy. I had forgotten this is what it felt like to be without poison.Days went by and we settled back into the usual. Life carried on like we were open books to each other when I was the open book and he was shut, still and dusty on a shelf.Khai took me out a lot those days. He spent every

Chapter Seventy-Two

I always sat in there for at least thirty minutes before the water got cold and the oils wore off. Edna would wave her hands above the water as she sat on a stool next to the tub and the water would move in little waves.I marvelled at her the first time she did it, I never knew wolves could control the elements. She blushed and said she was weak, when she was young she could raise all the water in Freudian and now, she could only cause a little sprinkle. That was how I learned that their abilities grew weaker as they aged. We Sun Wolves only got stronger with age.Edna believed and hoped that this daily process slowed the poison's effectiveness and therefore increased my days. I wasn't certain of that, none of us were but it was therapeutic to be enlightened by her wise mind. The woman was practically an owl. All that was left was for her to be in the tree outside Khai's bedroom window and turn her head at me and hoot every night."What's funny?" she asked after I laughed enough to k

Chapter Seventy-Three - Khai

I was sitting in a staff meeting at the bait shop downtown with stress heavy on my shoulder. The manager I had hired went on about staff and his grievances with them and the shop. They wanted more pay and more staff on hand. I told him I would increase the budget and he may hire two more part-time staff. Unfortunately, I could not increase their pay at the moment due to the restaurant that needed a new bathroom and kitchen. Perhaps in the next quarter. They continued to discuss their plans and ways to improve sales and though I looked into their eyes and nodded I heard and understood nothing. My body was full of tension that never ceased since the day Roman got shot. I found it funny how just months ago all the worries I had in the world were work and the pack. These days I had to force myself to worry about anything else but her. Everything else felt unnatural to care about. I was becoming Roman-centric, she was the sun I orbited. All I could think about was her even when I was aroun

Chapter Seventy-Four

A prayer had solved all things—a prayer. One minute I was seconds away from excruciating pain and the next my body was as hip as it used to be. I took a solo run the next day when Khai was out at work and my legs were as fast as they always were. The sun kissed my skin tenderly and I had returned to my old self. My mother always said that medicine came in to treat things but prayers are the ones that healed. Khai’s honest and faithful prayer to his ancestor cleared the poison from my body. Truly it was a miracle. This was Traga’s gift to me. I was truly his too. The elders were happy to see that I was well again. It felt odd to see them be happy for me when all I’ve ever seen them do was plot for me or want me gone. What shocked me even further was that they were praying for my recovery as well. Khai’s grandfather didn’t shy away from taking the credit, saying it was his prayer that did the job. I smiled and nodded, served them tea and left. But I was quickly called back to discuss w

Chapter Seventy-Five - Khai

Jacob sat across me with my phone in his palms. Falcon and Walter leaned in close to him, their faces glued to the screen of my phone. Rock music blasted through the speakers combined with a cacophony of voices in the pub. I took a sip of beer as they listed off names and deleted contacts of all my exes and women I was once involved with. It never came to mind so I never took the time to delete their contacts. They were simply out of sight and out of mind. Since Roman arrived, I never gave them a single thought. Jacob didn’t just delete their contacts he also blocked them.We were in the pub I took Roman to the last time. The day she made a scene, justly so. The day I told her I loved her and she never said it back.Did words even matter? If she didn’t love me she wouldn’t be marrying me now would she? I wasn’t listening to any of their jokes or the stories they told about my history. A great concern dawned on me. Roman had never expressed her feelings for me. She kissed me, and we sp

Chapter Seventy-Six - Khai

Golden Hour painted the sky in amber. The trees and grass looked like they were baking as the sun was about to set. Roman, Falcon, Jacob, Hannah, and I trekked into the forest in our human forms to signal that we did not come to fight. River Crescent lands were 20 miles from us so we drove most of it and walked the rest.It was a peaceful drive through the forest. Most of the time I admired my betrothed as she sat in the passenger seat, jamming to songs with Hannah who sang at the top of her lungs from behind me.I never thought, in any of my days that Falcon would offer himself as a bargaining chip but he did. Apart from stringing my cousin along all these years, I respected his honour and integrity.Falcon’s plan was simple, in addition to Roman offering Sun Wolf land he would offer himself as muscle to the River Crescents.Over the hill and down in the valley a ring of mansions appeared, surrounded by vast farmland bustling with crops and workers ending their day shift.“It’s beaut

Chapter Seventy-Seven - Khai

“You are insane!” I shouted.Roman struggled to keep up with me from behind as I stormed away. Hannah had phased and ran away and Falcon pursued her. This was a nightmare, nothing went according to plan. Instead, the world decided to fall apart around me. These were the things that made normal people depressed but because my brain was broken, I only felt rage and anger.“What did you expect me to say? No, and cause more trouble?” she shouted from behind me, out of breath.I stopped walking and she caught up.“I know that everyone hates me for being here. I want to do something for everyone. This is the least I can do!”“Do you even love me?” I asked her.Roman rolled her eyes as if the question had an obvious answer.“Of course I love you,” she said and her eyes went wide. That was the first time she ever said it.“Of course, I love you Khai, that’s why I’m doing it,” she said again, this time with substance.“You cannot claim to love me and willingly have a child with another man.”“

Chapter Seventy-Eight

The spring heat was bugging me and an even warmer breeze came through from the window. I opened my eyes and the lights were on.Didn't we switch them off?I checked on Khai and his face was too far from me to be breathing on my neck. Oddly he was too far away from me on the bed. Usually, he slept stuck to my body or an inch away. Never at the edge.I sat up and caught a figure by the mirror, my heart stopped for a minute as he stood there, wearing black pants, a leather jacket and that same familiar scar on his face.I saw his eyes as they reflected off the mirror and a devious smirk grew on his face. My stomach clenched and my breath stopped. Slowly, he turned around and faced me with a wider smile.Though the lights were on and I saw exactly where he was, it was just as terrifying as the dark."Roman," his coarse voice resonated. It sent shivers down my spine and crushed my ability to move."How are you?"My eyes went to the window, wide open. We had made it so easy for him. My lips

Chapter Seventy-Nine - Khai

I had to plan how to address everyone without Roman’s knowledge. Understanding how terrified she was of them when she first arrived and the vivid dreams she had been having, I couldn't let her think they were at our doorstep. However, I sensed that she also knew that without a doubt. That pervert was watching us, at every moment. He had his stupid dogs around Traga land but so did I. The problem was, we were losing numbers. Everyone sent out, especially on night watches either didn’t return or returned heavily injured, the men were becoming scared and reluctant. All these casualties I kept from Roman, if she saw them she would run away or turn herself in. I couldn’t risk the chance of that stupidity. Roman was afraid but she could also be reckless."We'll have to meet up in Sutterman Field," Jacob advised.I nodded up at him as we sat in the kitchen. He was referring to the city's largest football field, it would fit everyone and it would be far from Roman. Nobody visited it anymore d

Chapter Eighty - Khai

I looked at the porridge, steaming piping through the air and angelic swirls. I pushed it away.“Can’t you do it for me, Jacob?” I asked him.Jacob tilted his head to the side.“She needs you,” he said quietly.I covered my head and laid it my arms on the table. I couldn’t go back in there and face her. Her feet hurt the most that day and they were swelling. Her face was stained in tears, eyes swollen and puffy – I feared I might forget her face and fierce personality. The poison had so wrongly reduced her into a crying and crippling woman - what I would give to hear an opinion from her, a no or something that wasn’t agony. Also, I was still upset with her. How eagerly she wanted to have a child with my cousin’s mate. Out of all the things she could’ve done for Traga or me, why did it have to be that? I started my research the night we returned. Roman agreed that we would do it my way and I was going to find any way to prevent even the slightest contact. I was looking into egg donatio
