1. A ghost from the past

“You’re sleeping?!”A booming voice arrived, snapping me from my slumber at once. I did not realize when I had managed to fall asleep on the couch, amidst all the chaos of the room. Piles of files and books lay scattered on the floor, most of which belonged to my husband Calvin. As I looked to my right, I found Fiona, my mother in law, glaring at me from the doorstep. I instinctively got up on my feet, straightening my hair in the process. It’s been three years since I married Calvin, but I still couldn’t earn my mother-in-law's affections. “Who is going to clean all this mess if you’re going to sleep?” She demanded. “Quick, get it all done before Calvin arrives. You know he hates it if things are out of order.” Nodding, I knelt down on my feet and began gathering the numerous books that lay on the floor. It felt funny that only a month ago did I get this room thoroughly cleaned by my house keeping staff, and my mother in law still managed to find this room untidy. She was forci

2. Calvin Anderson

“That’s fantastic news, Jen!” Fiona rejoiced, “For the past three years, I've been sick of waiting for an heir. Cassie is useless as it is, but I’d expected that she could at least give me a grandchild. She is honestly good for nothing.” Anger arose within me upon hearing her words. I didn’t know what came over me, perhaps it was the threat I felt in Becky waking up, or the false allegations of my incapability of childbearing, or that I was utterly exhausted, both physically and mentally to tolerate them anymore, that I sought to give it back to them for once. Without giving it a second thought, I walked out of the kitchen and into the living room, ready to face the two evil women in the house. “Well, if you’d ask your son, you’d understand why you’re not getting your heir.” I said, grabbing their attention.FIona was surprised to see me, but I detected a hint of satisfaction in the small smirk that was forming on her face. She was satisfied that she could finally stir a reaction i

3. Can you blame me?

Closing the door behind, Calvin walked in with a stern look on his face. He roamed his eyes over all of us, and an unamused look claimed his face. As his eyes finally landed on me, they narrowed with anger, holding within them an accusatory glare. “What’s happening here?” He demanded as he walked toward me. “Your wife has been bullying us since morning, Calvin!” Fiona said, earning a glare from me. What a liar she is! “She won’t let us live in peace. I guess she wants us to move out soon.”“What are you talking about?” I asked, “I never even mentioned anything like that.” “Well, why will she admit it in front of you?” Jen said, lowering her eyes in feigning nonchalance. I let out an exasperated breath. This was beyond me. I cannot be bothered to deal with their lies anymore. Having had enough, I turned on my heel and made my way upstairs into my room. Once inside, I finally let my tears flow down my cheeks. They were liberated from all the pent up frustration, anger and helplessne

4. Indifference

Wiping my tears away, I walked toward the couch and picked up the gown, holding it close to my chest. No, I couldn’t give up on our marriage so easily. I have to show him tonight that he wasn’t wrong in marrying me, and that I indeed make a good wife. I know how important the charity gala was in establishing his position as a CEO, and as his wife, everyone’s eyes will be watching me. I will give them no reason to question my presence alongside him. I would prove to everyone that I belonged with him.I remained inside my house for the entire afternoon, preparing myself for the event. When it was almost seven, as promised, I stepped out of my walk-in closet and headed to the floor length mirror in my bedroom. It was placed right beside the french doors that led to the gallery, from where the light flooded into the room, illuminating it with its warmth. To say I was pleased with myself would be an understatement. As I stared at my reflection in the mirror, I found the glimmery silver fa

5. A mysterious man

The charity gala was already brimming with people as we made our appearance, so much so that our arrival had almost gone unnoticed. So many people from different fields of business, academia, and bureaucracy were present that I almost felt like I was invisible. They were all important people that made significant contributions to society and in the process also managed to fill their bank accounts with shit ton of money. Such a crowd was not new to me, thankfully. I was adopted into a very wealthy family, and hence, I grew up around elitism. I had been to countless flashy events like this in my life that by now I had mastered the art of socializing and small talk. It came as second nature to me, and yet, I couldn’t help but despise it with all my heart. “Stay close to me, alright?” He said, “I need to introduce you to a lot of people. Let them know that we are a happily married couple so that they understand that I can be a capable CEO.” I couldn’t help the smile that formed on my f
