I gasped when I saw him. He looked stunning in his new tuxedo. I had always thought he was the most handsome man I’d met, but tonight, he looked even better.
"What the hell are you doing here?" He demanded as he came to stand beside me. "I asked you to go in as soon as you arrived."
"I was talking to-" I turned my face to look at Mr De Luca, but to my surprise, he was nowhere to be found. He had left.
"Talking to who?" Calvin asked in impatience. "We're already late, let's go."
It hurt to see that his eyes didn’t show admiration like I hoped. He seemed indifferent. I had spent hours getting ready for him, but it felt like I didn’t matter at all.
"How do I look?" I asked.
He raised an eyebrow and gave me a dismissive glance. "Appropriate. Shall we go?"
I blushed, embarrassed, but I couldn’t let my tears ruin my makeup. I swallowed hard. "Yes."
Grabbing my arm roughly, he dragged me inside with him. Right then, Calvin’s phone buzzed. He read the message, frowning.
"What’s wrong?" I asked.
He shook his head and put the phone in his pocket. "It’s from the hospital."
I froze. "The hospital? Why are they contacting you? Is it about Becky?"
"They’ve scheduled your blood donation appointment for this week," he said.
I let out a sigh. "Oh."
"You seem relieved," he said. "What were you expecting?"
"Nothing," I muttered.
"It’s not nothing," he said, laughing. "What’s on your mind?"
"Well," I sighed, "Jen said the new drug they’re giving Becky is working well."
"Yeah, what about it?"
"Do you think she’ll wake up?" I asked.
It had been three years since she went into a coma. If not for me, she’d be dead. I’ve donated blood regularly, even though I knew it was unlikely she’d wake up. I did so because Becky was my friend and also she was Calvin's ex-lover... It's hard for me to think about it without being sad.
"I hope she does," Calvin said. "I’m looking forward to that day. Aren’t you?"
I forced a smile. "Yes."
Deep down, I wasn’t sure if I wanted that to happen.
*******
The charity gala was already packed when we arrived. We barely made a splash. There were so many important people from business, academia, and government that I felt invisible. They were all rich and successful, and most of them cared about money more than anything else.
I wasn’t new to these kinds of events. I grew up in a wealthy family and had attended many of them. I knew how to socialize and make small talk, but I hated it.
"Stay close," Calvin said. "I need to introduce you to people. Let them see we’re a happy couple. It’ll make me look good as a CEO."
I smiled. He was so good at fooling people into believing what he wanted. I respected that, but lately, his company had been struggling. The board was questioning his leadership, and he needed to prove he was capable. The gala was his chance to impress everyone.
"As you say," I nodded, linking my arm with his.
We spent the evening moving from one group to another, chatting enough to make people think we were a happy couple. But I could tell they didn’t see the cracks in our relationship.
Before dinner, Calvin went off to talk to an old friend, giving me a break. I took the time wandering down the corridor with paintings for auction.
One piece caught my eye. It was by my favorite artist, Bernard. I stood there, mesmerized, staring at the painting.
Suddenly, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and saw Calvin with his friend, James—the investor looking at Calvin’s company.
"James, this is my wife, Cassandra," Calvin said.
"Nice to meet you," James said, kissing my hand.
"Call me Cassie," I said, smiling.
"Are we bothering you?" he asked.
I glanced at the painting and laughed. "No, I was just admiring this. It’s one of my favorites."
"Is it?" he said, studying it. "That must be Bernard’s."
"It is," I said, proud of his sharp eye.
James looked at Calvin. "This one’s up for auction. Want to bid?"
"Oh, no," I said. "That’s okay."
"You should take it," James insisted. "Art isn’t appreciated much these days. Plus, Calvin wanted to contribute to the charity."
I glanced at Calvin, who looked unsure. But he wouldn’t back down from his pride. "Yeah, you’re right," he said. "I’ll go tell them we’re interested."
Just as we were about to bid, we learned someone else was already interested. The bidding started at eighty thousand dollars, and it quickly shot up. I watched nervously as it hit half a million.
"Mr. Enzo De Luca has won the bid for half a million dollars!" the announcer said.
I stared in shock. Calvin was red with embarrassment, glaring at me.
I never expected him to place a bid; this completely caught me off guard.
I stepped back, worried Calvin would yell at me. But he kept his temper in check, and without a word, he walked out.
Oh no. I wanted to make my husband proud, not humiliate him. This was the last thing I needed.
Amid the cheering, I spotted the man who had bid. Enzo. His menacing eyes locked with mine, but I quickly looked away, feeling awkward. Calvin had left, and I needed to catch up with him.
I hurried out of the hall, but the image of the mysterious man stayed in my mind.
That night, I reached home very late. Yet, Calvin was nowhere to be seen. No matter how many times I called him, he diverted my calls to voicemail. Dejected, I went to bed alone, praying that he returned home safe the next morning. When I awoke the next morning, the house was surprisingly silent. Fiona and Jen have apparently gone out very early in the morning and didn’t come back. This might be the only good thing that happened today. After getting ready, I settled down by the breakfast table as the maid served me some food. It was my favorite; pancakes with maple syrup with a glass of orange juice on the side.“It tastes delicious. Thank you so much.” I smiled at my maid, “Did Calvin come home last night?”“No, ma’am.”“Did he inform any of you where he has been off to?”“Er.. yes, ma’am.” She muttered, “He rang us this morning to ask for some papers to be sent to Westwood hospital.”The spoon I was holding fell from my hand in surprise, clinking against the plate. Widening my eyes,
“What?” My mind went blank. After a moment of silence, he said abruptly, “I need you to leave!”I clenched my fist, was that it? Since she was here, was he going to toss me out like a used tissue paper? I clenched my fists at my sides, staring at him in disbelief. I wasn’t some object he could toss aside when it no longer suited him. I had feelings, and I deserved far more respect than that.“What if I don’t agree to leave?” I said, taking one step closer to him. Calvin’s eyes widened in surprise as it was the first time in years that I dared to go against him. All these years, I’ve been silent because I was begging for his love and attention. I was hellbent on impressing him, and yet, despite so many efforts from my end, he chose to turn a blind eye toward me and only sought for Becky. If that was the case, then I no longer had to swallow my pride.“What’s wrong with you?” Calvin glowered, “Do you really think I’ll ever be happy married to you? Why would you want to be in a marriag
"Calvin wants a divorce?" Kelly’s voice rose in shock, and she nearly dropped her coffee. We were sitting at a cafe, and after Calvin left, I realized I couldn’t keep fighting this battle alone. For years, I had dealt with our marriage struggles by myself, keeping it all hidden from even my best friend. But now, I needed to talk."Shh! Be quiet!" I hissed, glancing nervously at the coffee on the table. The cafe was crowded, and I started to worry this wasn’t the best place for such a conversation, but it was too late to change. I needed to get everything off my chest."It's going to be public soon anyway," Kelly shrugged, sipping her coffee, “Tell me everything.”I frowned, the thought of a divorce still stinging. "We’ve been fighting since day one," I said bitterly. "Everyone thought we were perfect, but it was all just for show. We were never happy."She raised an eyebrow. "But why? You and Calvin always seemed so… ideal."I sighed, "It’s a long story."Kelly glanced at her watch. "
I stared at the blank white ceiling of the room. I'd been staying in the hotel for a week. The room was small, but it was neat and clean. Honestly, it felt so much better than living in that big house before. Especially without Jen and Fiona's constant torment, and far away from my cold-hearted husband. I’d been looking for a place recently, but it wasn’t easy. My parents wouldn’t help me, and my sister and mom made sure of that. I couldn’t ask Kelly to take me in either, since she was already doing so much for me. She offered me her couch, but I just couldn’t bring myself to let her carry that burden. So, I kept looking for a house, but luck wasn’t on my side.I rolled onto my side and glanced at the clock. Oops, It was 9 am! I needed to go. I still had an hour to get to the hospital for my appointment. Yes, despite everything, I still had to go donate blood for Becky. I didn’t want to go at first, but then I remembered she was awake now. Maybe I could finally get answers from her.
When I next woke up, a blank white ceiling came into my view. In the periphery, I noticed a plastic tube hanging from a rod, quickly recognising that it was an intravenous drip set. A constant beeping of a machine interrupted my thoughts, grabbing my attention. Slowly, the smell of sanitizer filled my nostrils, and it didn’t take me long to recognize where I was. At a hospital. I blinked my eyes to clear my view and tried to move my hand. A sharp pain shot up my forearm, making me realize that there was a needle inserted there. As I looked down, I noticed a cannula inserted into my hand, slowly infusing me with fluids. I then felt a gentle touch on my forearm, making me look up at once. It was Kelly. I frowned at her. “Kelly?” I said. I quickly realized that my voice was groggy, so I cleared my throat. “What are you doing here?” “You recognize me?” She said in relief, “Good, we haven’t completely lost you then.”“What?” I said, “What happened to me?” “Well, stress happened.” She
When it was finally time for discharge, Kelly had an emergency. “There’s an important meeting I need to attend, Cassie.” She said, “Do you think you’ll manage on your own with Enzo?” By this point, all the essential paperwork had been taken care of and my IV line was removed. I was prescribed oral medication for the next few days, and there was absolutely nothing to worry about. However, as part of the protocol, I had given some blood tests and we were awaiting the results of those. In the meanwhile, Enzo spoke to me about my relationship with Calvin and on what basis he was filing for the divorce. After spending a couple of hours with him, I realized that he was genuinely good at his job and hiring him would help me get a fair share of bargain during the divorce proceedings. He also managed to help me ease into the conversation very quickly, and before I realized, I was opening up to him about a lot of things. Thanks to Kelly, I managed to develop a healthy acquaintance with him i
Angst filled me at once as I looked at the gun. My first instinct was to run or flee from the place, but somehow I remained rooted in my place. I was perplexed and astonished, so much so that my brain just froze, no primitive protective reflexes kicking in. Before I could do anything, I felt the sound of metal clinking and suddenly, my hands were taken behind me and my wrists were locked. It was then that I realized that I was handcuffed. Fighting against the metal confines, I finally broke out of my trance and looked at the police officers in horror. “What's the meaning of this?” I said, “Get me out of these!” “Ma’am, I suggest that you cooperate with us and come to the police station.” One of the older gentlemen said, giving me a nasty look. “No!” I yelled, “Why am I arrested? I didn’t do anything!” “Ma’am, you’re booked under the charge of attempted murder. We have received a complaint that you attempted to kill Miss Becky Reeds. The complaint came from your own husband, so w
The old officer reluctantly got up from his seat, murmuring something to myself in annoyance. Shoving the recording device into his pocket, he left the room and banged it shut. I heaved a sigh of relief at departure, my heart finally calming down. Thank God Enzo was here. I would not have been able to handle this myself. It came as such a shock to me as I’d never imagined that Calvin could go to such an extent to punish me. In retrospect, I realized that my encounter with Becky and him in the hospital could have been the cause for all of this. He looked visibly angry with my words and actions, and I could only imagine all the lies she fed him after I’d left. Driven by anger, he might have reported me to the police, seeking some form of revenge from me. There was a knock on the door right then, and it opened shortly after. I instantly sank back in my seat as Enzo walked in, shutting the door behind him. I could feel the grimace that was forming on my face as he took a seat in front o
“Enzo got three stitches on his forehead and a mild concussion.” Leo announced to us in the waiting room. “Oh, thank god.” Grandma said, wrapping her hands around my body. I let out a sigh of relief finally, my head hanging low. “Yeah, and the doctors said he needs to rest for the next twenty four hours. So minimal visitors.” “Yeah, yeah. Of course.” Grandma said. “When is he going to be discharged?” “They just want to keep him under observation for a few more hours before they let him go. It’s just for safety.” He said and his eyes then found me. “You can meet him in a few minutes. The nurse is just finishing up.” I nodded, “Yeah.” Right then, Grandpa came in, searching for my eyes. The police held him up at the mansion after hell broke loose, so he had to stay back and take care of that business. Before I left, he swore to me that Alfred would be behind the bars, but I told him to just get here as soon as possible. “How is he?” He said as he approached me. “He’s okay.” “Tha
“Wow.” I said, chugging a glass of water. “That was something.” “Just another day in my life,” Enzo said, as a matter of fact. He left out a tired sigh, closing his eyes for a few seconds. “You okay?” I said, grabbing his shoulder gently. “Yeah, I’m fine.” He said, “Just a light headache. I’ll be fine.” “Do you think Ratliff is going to listen?” “Sure, he has no choice.” Enzo said, “Moreover, that is our best bet right now. We can’t really-” Enzo cut himself off as we heard a strangled cry from a distance. “Get away from him!” It was Grandma. I stared at Enzo in worry, “What the hell?”Both of us whipped our heads toward the hall, where Grandma was standing in a corner, watching commotion break loose. It was Alfred that held Grandpa’s collar, a murderous glare claiming his face. They seemed to be having an argument, and people gathered around to see the show. Enzo and I headed over immediately. “Alfred, get away from him right now.” Enzo intervened, pushing Alfred off of Gran
Cassie’s POVOnce the rings were exchanged, my grandparents took us around to meet everyone.I tried to remember the names of the first few people I’d met, thinking they were important, but once I realized just how many names I had memorized tonight, I’d given up on the task. I just made some mandatory small talk and exchanged some pleasant smiles with them.I don’t know how long it went on for, until my grandparents had to tend to some other business and that gave us a chance to finally meet our friends.“Thank God you’re here.” Kelly said, sighing, “I thought I wouldn’t catch you tonight.”
Enzo's POVThe day of the engagement was thankfully rather uneventful. My little conversation last night with Axon and his father turned out to be fruitful, as they didn’t try anything funny to ruin Cassie’s mood further. Our friends had arrived in the morning as expected, and ever since then, Cassie got busy with tending to them.As evening rolled, the girls ushered Cassie into her room to help her get ready for the event, conveniently kicking me out of our bedroom. I had no choice but to crash with Leo and Hank.“Excited?” Hank asked as he lazily scrolled through his instagram.
Enzo’s POVAs I made my way upstairs, I caught Mr Ashford coming down. “Oh, you’re not staying for another drink?”“No.” I said, “Cassie is alone. I better head back.” A smile broke out on his lips, “Well, keep her happy.” He said, giving a pat on my shoulder “Big day tomorrow.” “Yeah,” I said, as it suddenly occurred to me why we were here. It was for our engagement. It was supposed to be a happy getaway for us from our busy lives, yet here I was, striking business deals and threatening people to stay away from my soon to be wife. Fucking hell. I made my way to my room, expecting that Cassie had already gone to bed. But I was wrong. She was in the bathroom, the door slightly ajar. It was a silent invitation for me. I walked into the candle lit bathroom a minute later, having abandoned all my clothes. Cassie was peacefully resting until I arrived, and when she noticed me, her face broke into a grin. Without needing more of an invitation, I got into the tub, wrapping her legs arou
Enzo’s POV The entire time at the dinner, Axon tried to avoid my eyes. He has already got an earful from Mrs Ashford earlier, and judging by the look on her face right now, he must have got it real bad. Well, he deserved it and more. More of which will be delivered by me at the end of this shit show. Beside me, Cassie fell into an easy conversation with the others at the table. Few more people have joined us since the breakfast, most of whom were distant relatives of the Ashfords and some close friends. When we came to the end of it, Mr Ashford invited me for a drink with Alfred and Axon, hoping to put out some fires between us. Well, it was the perfect opportunity for me. Somewhere after my second Whiskey, Mr Ashford got a call from his missus, and he excused himself. “Don’t wait for me, gentlemen.” he said, “Though, I’ll be back soon.” As Mr Ashford closed the door behind him, Axon looked toward me. I took the seat right across from him, resting my leg over the other knee. “
I watched Axon in astonishment, barely grasping what he just uttered. Soon, his image became blurry in front of my eyes, my tears betraying me yet again as I tried to hold them back. Axon’s face twisted with confusion and then with worry. He realized that he hit the nail on the head, but he hit it too hard. “A-are you… crying?” I sniffled, wiping my tears away. “Look, Cassandra. I didn’t-” “There you are, dear.” I heard Grandma’s voice, emerging behind Axon. As he turned around, her face revealed to me. “I was looking everywhere for- Cassie! Are you okay?” Enzo was trailing behind her, looking into his phone. But as he heard the alarm in her voice, his eyes shot up to see me. And he did. He saw the tears. “Oh, dear. Why are you crying?” Grandma came to hold me, rubbing my shoulder, but I avoided her eyes. I was just watching Enzo as he came to me, and then his eyes slowly shifted to Axon. His jaw tightened. “What the hell did you do?” “I… I didn’t do anything. I was just talki
He turned around to look at me. “I can’t believe he’s related to you.” He said, “That fucking Bastard.” I rested my hands on my hips. “You sued him in the past?” “He screwed my client over, Cassie.” he said, “I had to teach him a lesson.” I frowned, “Wow, this was just what I needed.” I said, taking a seat on the bed, “Didn’t you think he was bitter about me too? The whole family? They were looking at me like the sole purpose of my visit here is to steal their property.” “Selfish vultures. All of them.” He said, “Axon is a power hungry beast. He cares about nothing more than money. I’m sure he thought he was invincible when the property was all going to be his. But with you in the picture, I wonder how much he’s getting.” “This is so silly.” I said, “Why would Mr Ashford invite them here if he knew about them?” “Well, he doesn’t. Or perhaps, he refuses to accept it.” He said, “You’ve heard it yourself. Mr Ashford treats him like his own family. And I don’t think they return the
“Axon.” Mr Ashford boomed. “Boy, why are we discussing that now? We’re not here for that.” Axon’s jaw was tightened as he continued glaring at me. And then, he looked at Mrs Ashford, his face softening, “I’m sorry, Grandma. I was just… taken aback seeing him there.” “Well, he is soon going to be your family.” Mr Ashford said, “What’s in the past better stay in the past. He might have been your business rival then, but now, he’s the man marrying your cousin. Don’t you forget that.” “I know.” He said, “As long as he doesn’t come after me, I’m fine with having him around.” “Well, it was part of his profession.” I said, “I’m sure things will be different now. Why don’t we just forget what happened and make a fresh start?” “Of course, that must come easy to you, right, dear? Making a fresh start everytime life gets inconvenient.” Alfred chimed in, “Just like your mother. What a dear soul she was.” Although his words were intended to be kind, nobody missed the hidden undertone of it.
