PROLOGUE

Prologue. Elena’s POV “Who's Elena Kingston?” The question hung in the air and my breath hitched. Why would the CEO's PA be looking for me? I wondered, getting quickly to my feet. “Me,” I raised my hand hurriedly, getting to my feet. I could feel my insides tangle into knots as everyone's eyes were on me. “You're needed in the CEO's office,” the PA, a slim haughty woman everyone called Clara said. “He's going to be taking over the ‘Houston Project,’ she revealed a piece of shocking news. “I…” the words lodged in my throat and for a moment all I could do was stare. I quickly caught myself, rushing to pack the files I'd worked on through the night before I rushed out of the office behind her. I clutched the project file tighter, and my fingers felt damp against the smooth leather as I followed the PA through a maze of glass walls and neutral décor. One month. That’s how long I’d been here—long enough to blend into the background, unnoticed, unbothered. Just the way I

The Wedding

Chapter 1: The Wedding One year, six months earlier… Elena’s POV My body felt numb as I stood before the mirror, the satin gown clinging to my gown and my beautiful reflection stared back at me. But my thoughts weren't here, I didn't feel anything much less feel like a woman who was about to get wedded. This wasn’t the wedding I’d imagined for myself. My dream wedding, and my expectations, are all down the drain. No tears of joy, no love. Just cold, calculated business. “Elena,” Cassandra's voice snapped me out of my thoughts. “Everyone is waiting for you, stop wasting time in front of that mirror,” my step-sister's voice was cold. She couldn't wait to be rid of me I thought, my heart already numb. I didn’t respond, my eyes meeting mine in the mirror, the sadness in my eyes couldn't be masked however much makeup I applied. “Elena,” Cassandra groaned, appearing behind me. “It’s your wedding day and as your DEAR sister I’m happy for you,” she held my hand. “You should b

No Change

Chapter 2: No Change Elena’s POV It was 11 pm when I finally eased onto the couch, I'd just finished putting Lily to bed. My lips curled for a brief instant when I recalled all the stories she had to say about her new classmates at school. There was a soap opera playing on TV at that moment. I just wanted to relax for a moment. I hadn’t seen Damien at all today. Not like I'd been seeing him a whole lot in recent months, he was always out for work and back late at night. The thought had barely left my mind when Damien staggered through the door of the lobby. He looked like a total mess, his usually sharp suit, disheveled, tie askew, and eyes glazed with anger. “Damien?” My eyes widened as I called out hesitantly. I'd never seen him like this. His eyes looked dim as he stared at me. “Ele—,” he murmured some unclear words under his breath. I rushed to help him inside the living room. His entire body reeked of alcohol, he looked nothing like the cold domineering Damien, he

A Friend

Chapter 3: A Friend Elena’s POV The house was quiet when I returned home after dropping Lily off at school, I'd re-enrolled her in a new school after the wedding. The Kingston estate was at the other end of the city and Lily’s former school was just close by, Damien had barely answered me when I informed him of the change. Like all other things related to me, he just didn't care. I sighed as I walked into the house, my mind was blank on what to do next. I had nothing to do. ‘Who knew a day would come when I'd be looking for something to do?’ I couldn’t even muster a smile. I'd gotten a Master's degree in Business Management, thinking when I came back home Father would look past the fact I'd gotten pregnant with Lily. Only, he hadn't. I shook my head as I walked up the stairs, I'd been so naive to think that. After I got pregnant with Lily father sent me abroad to study. I didn’t need anyone to tell me that he did that to hide me and the pregnancy away. The daughter of

Embarrassing

Chapter 4: Embarrassing Elena’s POV Lily was fast asleep by the time I donned my dress, a black satin gown that hugged my curves. I always felt sexy whenever I wore it. ‘I was gonna see Jacinta anyways’ I thought, adjusting the strap of the small handbag I intended to use. I might as well make a good impression. It wouldn't do to meet her looking like the poor invisible wife of Damien Landon. My eyes flashed as I silently remembered Damien’s words from earlier; ‘I'll have a word with you,’ he'd said. I couldn’t quite place it but I had a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach when I thought about it. Damien had ignored me for months… bar that night, my cheeks flushed and I shook the thought away. If Damien was looking for me, I had little faith it'd be anything good. I checked on Lily before heading downstairs, the satin of my gown whispering against my skin. I could hear the faint humming of a car engine as I approached the door. But nothing could have prepared me for the

5: Unwanted Help

Chapter 5: unwanted help Elena’s POV The air felt still as I met the man's eyes, they were filled with concern but I had the faint thought that he was mocking me somehow. “Elena,” Jacinta whispered, nudging me. “Don't mind it, I'll pay okay?” She glanced at the man, an unfriendly look in her eyes. “I…” I was about to speak when the man spoke up. “I can't stand by while Mrs Landon is in a fix can I?” the man said smoothly. He turned to the waiter, “I'll be covering their bill.” “No thanks, but thank you,” Jacinta butted in, taking out a credit card from her bag. “We can handle ourselves.” My tongue felt tied as I watched them bicker amongst themselves, I wanted to say something but what? The man frowned in displeasure. “I'm trying to help Mrs. Landon here, not you. Why don't you skimper off to the side and allow me to do what I need to do,” his tone was filled with mockery as he stared at Jacinta. I narrowed my eyes, about to speak up for Jacinta but a sudden hush fill

6: My surprise

Chapter 6: My surprise Elena’s POVWhat was that all about? My heart thudded as I stared at the door Damien had just walked out of. Hid words pricked at me and I felt a bolt of pain so sharp I inhaled a sharp breath of air. And I'd thought he'd stepped in earlier because he cared. The thought made me chuckle, bitterness and pain mixed in within me. He didn’t care. Damien never would. All he cared about was his family image, nothing else. Not me. I was a fool to think for a second that one intimate moment would change that. I sniffed, hurriedly wiping my damp eyes. I was just about to pick up my bag when the waiter walked in again, he held a small parcel in his hand. I was caught by surprise when he outstretched his hand to give it to me. “For you ma'am,” he spoke, his tone as polite as ever. “For me?” I questioned, not taking the parcel from his hand. “Who sent this?” I asked, not intending to take it till I knew who it was from. “Mr. Mcgregor,” the mention of that man's name

7: ESCALATING TENSIONS

Chapter 7ESCALATING TENSIONSELENA “What's this?” I asked, holding the check with shaky hands as I stared at Jacinta, silently waiting for answers. I could recognize that signature anywhere, it was Damien’s signature without a doubt. How many nights had I stayed up at night staring at the copy of our marriage certificate, tears streaming down my face and wishing that it was all a dream? “Tell me, Jacinta,” my voice came out sharper than I'd intended. “What's this about?” I stared at her, my eyes searching hers, looking for clues. “Yes it's from Damien,” Jacinta sighed, looking away. Her expression looked crestfallen. “He gave it to me.” “Why?” I repeated, holding the cheque between my thumb and index finger. I couldn’t imagine any reason why Damien would give Jacinta a cheque worth… my eyes glanced over it and my eyes narrowed further. A cheque worth half a million dollars, that was insane money. Whatever it was for, I didn't expect it to be good. “I…” Jacinta’s lips qui

8: Breaking Free

CHAPTER 8Breaking Free ElenaMy heart felt like it was being clawed out as I stared at Lily in Damien’s arms, she was still asleep and her face was pressed into Damien. A few million questions filled my mind but no answers came to mind; ‘what was Damien doing in Lily’s room? Had Lily woken up? Did this have something to do with earlier?’ “She was scared,” Damien suddenly spoke, his eyes barely open. “She was scared like—” Damien paused, his head drooping again. He looked drunk I thought, I took a deep breath and silently began to inch close. I'd barely moved two steps when his head whipped up, holding me in place. “It's not the same anymore,” Damien mumbled the words, I wasn't entirely sure what he was referring to. “Damien,” I whispered, “let me have Lily, please.” A lump formed in my throat, “She needs to sleep.” “What do you know about it?” Damien snapped, his voice raising a little. His hands weren't stable as he pointed at me. “I…” I trailed off, at a loss for words.

9: Taken Flight At Dawn

CHAPTER 9Taken Flight At DawnDamienThe world felt blurry and dim as I stirred slowly. I winced as a dull pounding filled my head, the hangover from the night before hitting me raw and hard. My throat was dry, my body heavy, and my thoughts clouded by an uncomfortable mix of grogginess and unease.Something was missing, though I couldn’t put my finger on it. It gnawed at the edges of my mind, a faint echo of something important. What was it?I eased up from my lying position slowly, and I squinted, trying to adjust my eyes to the light in the room. My memories were fragmented, and all I could remember were bits and pieces. A flash of Lily’s face. Elena’s voice. And then... nothing. What had I been up to last night? I shook my head, forcing myself to my feet. I nearly stumbled, my hands gripped the edge of the bed with a death grip. I sat for a long moment before I could trust my legs to move. I headed to the bathroom. In the bathroom, the cool spray of the shower did little to
