Chapter 3: A Friend
Elena’s POV The house was quiet when I returned home after dropping Lily off at school, I'd re-enrolled her in a new school after the wedding. The Kingston estate was at the other end of the city and Lily’s former school was just close by, Damien had barely answered me when I informed him of the change. Like all other things related to me, he just didn't care. I sighed as I walked into the house, my mind was blank on what to do next. I had nothing to do. ‘Who knew a day would come when I'd be looking for something to do?’ I couldn’t even muster a smile. I'd gotten a Master's degree in Business Management, thinking when I came back home Father would look past the fact I'd gotten pregnant with Lily. Only, he hadn't. I shook my head as I walked up the stairs, I'd been so naive to think that. After I got pregnant with Lily father sent me abroad to study. I didn’t need anyone to tell me that he did that to hide me and the pregnancy away. The daughter of a business tycoon, pregnant? That would've been quite the headline. Father had never failed to remind me on multiple occasions what a disappointment and disgrace I was. So instead of the welcome I thought I'd get, a job at the company, and a chance of redemption, Father had married me off to the first person who'd come calling. Beep! Beep! My cell phone rang suddenly, snapping me out of my thoughts. My mood lightened when I saw the name on the screen; Jacinta. Jacinta was my best friend, she'd helped me when I'd traveled abroad pregnant with Lily. She'd been the only one who'd stayed with me through the delivery. “Hello?” A rare smile touched my face. “Elena,” a small coy voice called over the line. “I'm pissed with you, you know that?” Jacinta’s voice was deadbeat as she spoke. “Me?” my eyes narrowed, what was she talking about? “What did—” “You get married and you decide not to tell me?” Jacinta interrupted, her words made my heart skip a beat. “I—” I trailed off, not quite sure what to say. But my mind filled with thoughts, how did she know? The ceremony had been a small and quiet one and I hadn’t… “Yes,” Jacinta prompted again, cutting off my thoughts. “Why didn't you tell me?” she sighed. “Gosh Elena, I'd been looking forward to your wedding.” “I know,” I whispered, “I'm sorry, okay? I can explain—” I wanted to continue but she cut me off. “You'll explain in person Elena,” Jacinta chuckled slightly. “GUESS WHO'S BACK?” “What–” a smile spread over my lips suddenly. “You're back?” “Yes,” Jacinta replied, a smile in her tone. “Where can we meet? I have the weekend off before I start working,” her words sent a pang of jealousy through me. “Later,” I glanced at the clock, silently calculating when Lily would be back from school. I didn’t want to leave her to the maids so I'd put her to bed first before leaving the house. “I know this great place, their wine is really good.” I chuckled, trying to sound upbeat. “It's a deal,” Jacinta agreed immediately. I quickly told her the location and time before she ended the call. For a moment I stood there lost in thought, Jacinta had gotten a job and what was I doing? My mood soured as I glanced around at the cold silent house. “You're being a mother for Lily,” I whispered to myself. That was far more than my mother had ever been I thought. The rest of the day passed in a blur and soon it was time. I was in the kitchen when I heard Lily’s shrill voice piercing the air. “Mom, I'm back,” her voice echoed, breaking the silence. “I'm over here sweetie,” I called out, my hands already moving to unpack her lunch. I'd just poured her juice into her cup when Lily walked in, her quiet expression made me freeze. “What's the matter?” I asked, walking up to her. I squatted, meeting her eye level. “It's…” Lily’s lips quivered and she turned to stare behind her. My eyes followed her gaze and my breath caught in my throat. Damien. “I picked her up myself, the driver called in sick,” his eyes that observed me were unreadable. Lily’s bag and lunch box were in his hands, they looked out of place with his impeccable suit. “Thank you,” I forced a smile, moving to take the bag and lunch box from his hands. “I hope she didn't bother you,” I dropped the bags on the kitchen counter. “No,” Damien spoke curtly, not moving from the doorway. My heart thudded as I felt his hooded eyes sweep over me and memories of last night came flooding in, I flushed avoiding his gaze. “Lily,” I looked down at her. “Go up to your room and remove your clothes, I'll be right behind you,” I leaned down to give her a peck on the cheek. “But mom—” Lily wanted to protest but I shook my head. “Off you go now,” I pulled out a piece of candy and gave her, only then did she leave, satisfied. Damien watched the exchange quietly, not saying a word. “So…” I looked up, picking my words carefully. “I'm planning to go out to see a friend,” I watched his eyes flick to me as I spoke. “A female friend,” I added, exhaling slowly. “And so?” Damien’s eyes didn't leave me. “I was just—” My mind blanked and I trailed off. I was just trying to ask for permission. Damn it! “You can do whatever you want to do,” Damien shrugged, his hands slipping back into his pockets. “Just—” I wanted to complete my statement but his words caught me by surprise. “You're okay with that…” my eyes widened slightly. I'd been expecting a cold reply. “I'll have the driver take you,” Damien didn't mind my surprise, his eyes scrutinized me carefully. “And when you come back,” he paused before he spoke almost deliberately. “I'll have a word with you.” Me? My heart skipped a beat and my pulse quickened, Damien’s eyes stared at me with a hidden emotion I couldn’t place. He didn’t wait for me to speak before he turned on his heel and left, leaving me frozen still. What would Damien want to talk to me about? I wondered, a knot tightening in my belly. I vaguely felt something was amiss but I couldn’t quite place my finger on it. Was I in trouble?Chapter 4: Embarrassing Elena’s POV Lily was fast asleep by the time I donned my dress, a black satin gown that hugged my curves. I always felt sexy whenever I wore it. ‘I was gonna see Jacinta anyways’ I thought, adjusting the strap of the small handbag I intended to use. I might as well make a good impression. It wouldn't do to meet her looking like the poor invisible wife of Damien Landon. My eyes flashed as I silently remembered Damien’s words from earlier; ‘I'll have a word with you,’ he'd said. I couldn’t quite place it but I had a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach when I thought about it. Damien had ignored me for months… bar that night, my cheeks flushed and I shook the thought away. If Damien was looking for me, I had little faith it'd be anything good. I checked on Lily before heading downstairs, the satin of my gown whispering against my skin. I could hear the faint humming of a car engine as I approached the door. But nothing could have prepared me for the
Chapter 5: unwanted help Elena’s POV The air felt still as I met the man's eyes, they were filled with concern but I had the faint thought that he was mocking me somehow. “Elena,” Jacinta whispered, nudging me. “Don't mind it, I'll pay okay?” She glanced at the man, an unfriendly look in her eyes. “I…” I was about to speak when the man spoke up. “I can't stand by while Mrs Landon is in a fix can I?” the man said smoothly. He turned to the waiter, “I'll be covering their bill.” “No thanks, but thank you,” Jacinta butted in, taking out a credit card from her bag. “We can handle ourselves.” My tongue felt tied as I watched them bicker amongst themselves, I wanted to say something but what? The man frowned in displeasure. “I'm trying to help Mrs. Landon here, not you. Why don't you skimper off to the side and allow me to do what I need to do,” his tone was filled with mockery as he stared at Jacinta. I narrowed my eyes, about to speak up for Jacinta but a sudden hush fill
Chapter 6: My surprise Elena’s POVWhat was that all about? My heart thudded as I stared at the door Damien had just walked out of. Hid words pricked at me and I felt a bolt of pain so sharp I inhaled a sharp breath of air. And I'd thought he'd stepped in earlier because he cared. The thought made me chuckle, bitterness and pain mixed in within me. He didn’t care. Damien never would. All he cared about was his family image, nothing else. Not me. I was a fool to think for a second that one intimate moment would change that. I sniffed, hurriedly wiping my damp eyes. I was just about to pick up my bag when the waiter walked in again, he held a small parcel in his hand. I was caught by surprise when he outstretched his hand to give it to me. “For you ma'am,” he spoke, his tone as polite as ever. “For me?” I questioned, not taking the parcel from his hand. “Who sent this?” I asked, not intending to take it till I knew who it was from. “Mr. Mcgregor,” the mention of that man's name
Chapter 7ESCALATING TENSIONSELENA “What's this?” I asked, holding the check with shaky hands as I stared at Jacinta, silently waiting for answers. I could recognize that signature anywhere, it was Damien’s signature without a doubt. How many nights had I stayed up at night staring at the copy of our marriage certificate, tears streaming down my face and wishing that it was all a dream? “Tell me, Jacinta,” my voice came out sharper than I'd intended. “What's this about?” I stared at her, my eyes searching hers, looking for clues. “Yes it's from Damien,” Jacinta sighed, looking away. Her expression looked crestfallen. “He gave it to me.” “Why?” I repeated, holding the cheque between my thumb and index finger. I couldn’t imagine any reason why Damien would give Jacinta a cheque worth… my eyes glanced over it and my eyes narrowed further. A cheque worth half a million dollars, that was insane money. Whatever it was for, I didn't expect it to be good. “I…” Jacinta’s lips qui
CHAPTER 8Breaking Free ElenaMy heart felt like it was being clawed out as I stared at Lily in Damien’s arms, she was still asleep and her face was pressed into Damien. A few million questions filled my mind but no answers came to mind; ‘what was Damien doing in Lily’s room? Had Lily woken up? Did this have something to do with earlier?’ “She was scared,” Damien suddenly spoke, his eyes barely open. “She was scared like—” Damien paused, his head drooping again. He looked drunk I thought, I took a deep breath and silently began to inch close. I'd barely moved two steps when his head whipped up, holding me in place. “It's not the same anymore,” Damien mumbled the words, I wasn't entirely sure what he was referring to. “Damien,” I whispered, “let me have Lily, please.” A lump formed in my throat, “She needs to sleep.” “What do you know about it?” Damien snapped, his voice raising a little. His hands weren't stable as he pointed at me. “I…” I trailed off, at a loss for words.
CHAPTER 9Taken Flight At DawnDamienThe world felt blurry and dim as I stirred slowly. I winced as a dull pounding filled my head, the hangover from the night before hitting me raw and hard. My throat was dry, my body heavy, and my thoughts clouded by an uncomfortable mix of grogginess and unease.Something was missing, though I couldn’t put my finger on it. It gnawed at the edges of my mind, a faint echo of something important. What was it?I eased up from my lying position slowly, and I squinted, trying to adjust my eyes to the light in the room. My memories were fragmented, and all I could remember were bits and pieces. A flash of Lily’s face. Elena’s voice. And then... nothing. What had I been up to last night? I shook my head, forcing myself to my feet. I nearly stumbled, my hands gripped the edge of the bed with a death grip. I sat for a long moment before I could trust my legs to move. I headed to the bathroom. In the bathroom, the cool spray of the shower did little to
Chapter 10Confrontations Damien“What do you mean she's gone?” Albert's voice was curt and brimming with barely held rage. Careful, I thought, narrowing my eyes. I put up with his tone because he was Elena’s father and nothing else. “It's like I said,” I exhaled slowly, repeating the words I'd repeated twice already. “Elena’s disappeared, she took her daughter to the hospital and hasn't been seen since then.” There was a long pause on the line as Albert took in the news. “She’s not here,” Albert finally said, his tone mellow. “I'll call the authorities, she has to be found.” Indeed, I nodded my head. I had people checking all the nearby hospitals for any sight of her. I still held onto the hope that Elena had taken Lily to the hospital, in that case, it would be easy to find them. “Think about how this will affect our arrangement,” I paused, allowing the implications of my words to sink in. “If she's not found,” I paused again. “It wouldn't be good for anyone.” I ended the
Chapter 11A Safe PlaceElena The knock at the door roused me up from sleep and within moments I was up and alert, my body tensed as I stared at the door cautiously. “Room Service Ma'am,” a muffled voice called from outside and I felt my racing heart ease up a little. I'd picked a small hotel to stay for the night after leaving the hospital. Lily had slept through everything, only waking briefly to use the restroom. “Your bill,” the attendant motioned at a small printout on one side of the tray as he passed it to me and the scent of steaming coffee hit my nostrils. “Thank you,” I whispered, not wanting to disturb Lily, I handed over some dollar bills and even now I could only thank my lucky stars that Mcgregor had given me that cash. I wouldn't have made it this far otherwise. “Thank you, ma'am,” the attendant smiled and turned to leave. “Mummy,” Lily’s voice echoed as she pushed away the sheets, her eyes still groggy from sleep. “Where are we? This isn’t my room,” she asked
Chapter 49Worth The Risk?Elena My heart thudded erratically as I followed behind Damien and got into the car. I sure hoped I was doing the right thing, I thought, staring out the window. “It's so pretty,” Lily's eyes were bright like fireflies as she stared around at the sleek interior of the car. I didn't have any reaction, I'd expect nothing less from the CEO of a company. “Yes,” Damien smiled, his eyes reaching mine but he didn't say a word. He put the car in drive and slowly reversed, before driving out of the parking lot. I glanced at Jenna's car that I'd left parked in the corner, silently wondering how many tickets it'd accumulate by the time I was back. Damien drove on in silence, the air filled with unspoken thoughts. I silently noted his tensed expression that he'd hidden very well, something was up. “So…” I broke the silence, keeping my gaze focused straight ahead. “What’s going on?” “Not here Elena,” Damien didn't glance in my direction, his gaze also fixed ahea
Chapter 48Take A LeapElena My heart was in my stomach as I drove to Lily's school. I was driving faster now, my stomach a tangle of nerves. Damien's text had completely unnerved me, I'd texted him the address of Lily's school instead of the house. It'd be safe there I silently assured myself, thinking of the crowd that'd be around the school. My heart leaped to my throat as I pulled up into Lily's school and I parked, quickly pulling out the key and getting out of the car. I was almost fifteen minutes late, I noted, glancing at my little wristwatch. I'd just reached the top of the front stairs when the door opened and a parent walked out, child in tow. I nodded in greeting as I walked past, heading inside. The children usually sat around in the front hall as they waited for their parents. “Miss Elena?” A teacher I recognized smiled as she got to her feet but I didn't look at her, my eyes sweeping around in search of Lily. 'Where is she?’ I felt my heart sink as I glanced th
Chapter 47A Choice In The Midst Of DangerElenaThe house was quiet when I walked in and I finally heaved a sigh of relief, Lily had gone to school and finally I could have some peace. Too soon. The thought had barely registered in my mind when Jenna poked her head around the corner, her gaze searching. “You're back,” she said, smiling but I could feel the deluge of questions that hid behind her smile. I'd come back home a few days ago, Lily was over the moon and she'd literally been glued to me all day, I'd felt very guilty about it so I'd spent all my time with her, trying to make it up. “Lily says she wants to be a ballerina for Halloween,” I chuckled drily, forcing a smile. “You're still home?” I asked. Normally Jenna would've headed to work by the time I came back. “There was a small emergency yesterday,” Jenna mumbled through a mouthful of cereal she'd prepared. “So we're having the day off.” I nodded in understanding. “It's about time you spoke to me, Elena,” Jenna ke
Chapter 46A Dead EndDamienThe office was silent as I tried to focus on the documents I was going through, but my mind kept on drifting back to Elena. It'd been three days. She hadn't called or come into the office, I’d tried to tell myself that I shouldn't care. I'd wanted calling multiple times but I always chickened out at the last moment. What was I going to tell her? What should I even tell her? I was her boss, bosses didn't call employees asking when they felt like resuming work. Bosses didn't also develop feelings for their employees, a voice whispered in my head. The thought made me freeze, my hand holding the pen pausing mid-air. “Damn it!”I cursed softly under my breath and I dropped the pen with frustration. I had a lot of paperwork to clear up but the thought of Elena just wouldn't leave my mind. Despite myself I took out my cell phone and thumbed through it, my fingers pausing when I got to her contact. I stared at her contact details, feeling deeply conflicted
Chapter 45Open ThreatsThe office was dead silent when Victoria walked in, the sound of her heels echoing in the room. She had a satisfied smirk on her face seeing the looks of utter shock on the faces of the directors. They had ample reason to be shocked. Victoria had connected her system to the projector in the boardroom and she'd projected certain things, the directors had gotten the shock of their lives. There were four men in the room, they should've been more but Frank had assured her that there'd been only four directors present at the meeting. This made Victoria relieved, things were still within her control. The board had nine directors, two were loyal to her, and the other three, they answered to Michael. The four who were meeting were all leaning towards Damien, so it was obvious what they were up to. Victoria didn't dare allow things develop further, if Michael got a whiff of what was happening it could bring unexpected problems. She didn't dare push her luck. “Wh
Chapter 44Behind The MaskDamien Thud! Thud! Thud! My arms and muscles felt sore as I pounded my fists on the sandbag with venom. I wasn't a frequent regular to the gym, I kept in shape but just enough to not look like those walking bags of muscle. I didn't want to admit it, but I needed to let off some steam. Especially after my conversation with her. Elena. Her name had been on my mind all morning, I'd come to the gym with the hope an intense workout would snap her out of my thoughts. I was wrong. Even now her words from last night echoed in my head. “You married a woman you didn't love, treated her like trash...You made her leave you…You made her sign this contract…” Elena's words echoed non stop in my head, even now I could feel her deep seated pain. Pain that I'd caused. What was wrong with me? I growled under my breath, punching at the sandbag with greater frequency and vigor. I'd hurt her, oh I really had, guilt pricked at me as memories of the old Elena flowed th
Chapter 43No Loose EndsThe office was quiet and peaceful, Victoria was at her desk as she went through company reports and documents. Managing the company wasn't an easy feat but she'd put in her utmost effort in it. Father wasn't inclined to patience, especially if he noted any mistakes. And no mistakes would be made, Victoria decided, her brows clamped together and she focused on the papers with unwavering concentration.Father had given her control of the company weeks after she'd made Damien discredited. A smile crawled up her face as she recalled the incident. It'd been so easy doing Damien in, all she'd had to do was bribe a few board members, a few bad suggestions here and there, and voila! Damien had been relegated to the background by Father in a fit of rage, he'd not spoken a word to Damien for weeks. He'd eventually given Damien one of the newly acquired companies as a form of redemption. Victoria smiled again, she'd also wrecked his chance of redemption. She'd done
Chapter 42New DealElena The room was silent and Damien's eyes were still fixed on me, his unasked questions still hung in the air. Should I tell him the truth? The big question lay before me, the problem was, I couldn't decide. I still clutched the document in my hand, my bold italic signature stood out in my gaze, a reminder of the contract I'd committed myself to so many months ago. “I'm telling you the truth Elena,” Damien stared at me. “I wouldn't lie to you, not about this.” I sighed, glancing away. Despite myself, Damien's words had the ring of Truth in them. I only wondered what he'd say if I revealed I'd never lost my memory in the first place. But even now, after all these months the memory of our last encounter before the accident lingered. I could still see the image of Damien tangled with Sophia at his office, and I could still hear his cold words in my head. “I don't remember any of it,” I whispered, meeting Damien's gaze levelly. “If I had a husband I'd remember
Chapter 41 Threads of DeceitThe room was silent as Magaret sat calmly in her seat, her face was illuminated by the faint glow from the fire in the fireplace. She was comfortable in her seat as she sipped tea from a mug in her hands, this was one of Magaret's favourite pastimes. Victoria was standing by the window, on a call. She looked a little annoyed as she spoke into the phone, obviously having a heated conversation. “Is there a problem?” Magaret asked, noticing Victoria had ended her phone call. “No,” Victoria shook her head, not saying more. “It's just a little issue at the company.” “Well done,” Magaret nodded, and she stared at Victoria, hints of praise filling her eyes. “You've done well, Victoria,” Magaret's voice was filled with pride. “It was so easy to dispose of Damien,” Magaret chuckled. “He didn't see it coming,” a small smile touched her lips. “It's not over Mother,” Victoria's expression didn't shift despite the praise Magaret had heaped on her.“We can't af
