10: Confrontations

Chapter 10Confrontations Damien“What do you mean she's gone?” Albert's voice was curt and brimming with barely held rage. Careful, I thought, narrowing my eyes. I put up with his tone because he was Elena’s father and nothing else. “It's like I said,” I exhaled slowly, repeating the words I'd repeated twice already. “Elena’s disappeared, she took her daughter to the hospital and hasn't been seen since then.” There was a long pause on the line as Albert took in the news. “She’s not here,” Albert finally said, his tone mellow. “I'll call the authorities, she has to be found.” Indeed, I nodded my head. I had people checking all the nearby hospitals for any sight of her. I still held onto the hope that Elena had taken Lily to the hospital, in that case, it would be easy to find them. “Think about how this will affect our arrangement,” I paused, allowing the implications of my words to sink in. “If she's not found,” I paused again. “It wouldn't be good for anyone.” I ended the

11 : A Safe Place

Chapter 11A Safe PlaceElena The knock at the door roused me up from sleep and within moments I was up and alert, my body tensed as I stared at the door cautiously. “Room Service Ma'am,” a muffled voice called from outside and I felt my racing heart ease up a little. I'd picked a small hotel to stay for the night after leaving the hospital. Lily had slept through everything, only waking briefly to use the restroom. “Your bill,” the attendant motioned at a small printout on one side of the tray as he passed it to me and the scent of steaming coffee hit my nostrils. “Thank you,” I whispered, not wanting to disturb Lily, I handed over some dollar bills and even now I could only thank my lucky stars that Mcgregor had given me that cash. I wouldn't have made it this far otherwise. “Thank you, ma'am,” the attendant smiled and turned to leave. “Mummy,” Lily’s voice echoed as she pushed away the sheets, her eyes still groggy from sleep. “Where are we? This isn’t my room,” she asked

12: Strings Attached

Chapter 12 Strings Attached Elena My heart thudded in my chest as I stared at Sarah, it was her. It had to be. She looked old, older than I remembered I thought, staring at her. Her hair had sprinkles of grey in it and it'd been wound into a little bun at the top of her head. “Who are you?” She asked sharply, her lips twisting into a scowl, she didn't look happy at all at being recognized. “I'm Elena,” I reacted quickly, pushing my surprise away. It'd been years since she saw me, it was a given that she didn't recognize me. “I'm Agatha’s daughter,” I whispered, staring at her expression. “You're what?” Sarah's lips thinned into a grim line. “I've had enough surprises for a day,” she snapped, her sharp voice making me flinch. “What are you doing here? Surely you weren't passing by the neighborhood,” Sarah's eyes bored coldly into mine. “I—” the words caught in my throat and I struggled to speak. I'd been prepared for a whole lot of things but not this sort of welcome. “Wel

13: Confrontations

Chapter 13Confrontations Elena “What's the condition, Aunt Sarah?” I asked softly, my eyes fixed steadily on her as my mind raced with thoughts. ‘What condition could Aunt Sarah have for helping me?’ I wondered, staring into her dark eyes. “It's nothing serious,” Sarah suddenly smiled, easing the tension. “I just want you to understand that after this, I won't be helping you anymore.” Silence. My heart thudded as I silently weighed Sarah's words and my heart beat erratically in my chest. She wasn't going to help me? I felt a deep sense of disappointment at the thought, if Sarah wasn't going to help me I couldn’t think of anything else I could do to salvage the situation. “Aunt—” “Call me Sarah,” she cut me off, her lips pursed. “Calling me Aunt won't win you any brownie points,” she chuckled, adjusting her sitting position. I nodded, exhaling, “Sarah, you do know how father is, he won't —” “He will,” Sarah cut me off coldly, her eyes gleamed with impatience. “I said I'll

14: Tense Encounter

Chapter 14 Tense Encounter Elena The air was thick with tension and I felt the air flow heavily around me. Sarah's first words had heated the room significantly. “Hmmm,” Albert's expression turned black and I almost thought he was going to bite back. His face suddenly relaxed and he snorted, leaning back in his seat. “What are you doing with her?” He asked suddenly, directing his gaze to me. I looked away, not able to meet his scorching gaze and I shifted uneasily on my feet, not quite sure if it was okay to come forward and take a seat. “Isn't it obvious?” Sarah spoke calmly, her pose relaxed as she sat leisurely. “I'm here to give her justice.” “Justice?” A bizarre expression appeared on Albert's face and he glanced at me. “What's all this about?” He demanded, his cold eyes boring into mine. “How dare you leave your husband's house?” He thundered, his sudden outburst made me flinch. “Do you have any idea what you've done?” He raged, his eyes reddened with rage. “I…” I s

15: Misjudgments

Chapter 15Misjudgments Elena “I wasn't doing this,” I whispered under my breath. No, I definitely shouldn't be doing this I thought, my eyes glancing around at the people in the public bus. Sarah had dropped me off at the bus station, she hadn’t said much but her cold determined eyes told me that I didn't have a choice but to continue. I had to find a way to prove that Damien had actually done something to Lily.Sarah's words echoed in my ears. “Your father won't let this marriage alliance fall apart so easily, the benefits are enticing,” Sarah had stared at me fixedly. “The only way he'll give it up is If it isn't mutually beneficial, especially to him.” This then brought me to my present impossible task—get a way for Damien to admit, I'd record it. And then Sarah would use her network to make it spread, the marriage would be called off then. Crazy! That was the word I had for it. Completely bonkers! But I didn’t have much of a choice. I'd offended Father, I had little doub

16: Crossroads Of Deception

Chapter 16Crossroads Of DeceptionElena My feet were frozen to the spot as I stared, dumbstruck. The both of them hurriedly disentangled from each other and Damien’s eyes flashed when he looked up at me. “What are you doing here?” he snapped, his chest rising and falling in quick succession. The lady in his arms turned her back to me, she was buttoning up her shirt. “I…” I opened my mouth, but no words came out. My mind raced, trying to process what I’d just witnessed.“Where did you go?” Damien continued, not bothering to adjust his tie or shirt. “You think you can just come and go as you please?” Something in his tone made me snap to attention and my daze cleared. “I left after what you did,” I said, my voice low. “I think I was interrupting something,” I glanced over at the lady beside him, a bitter taste in my mouth and I turned to leave. At that moment Damien’s secretary barged through the door, her eyes were wide with panic. “I'm so—sorry sir,” she stammered, her voic

17: Off To A Bumpy Start

Chapter 17Off To A Bumpy StartElena My heart was in my throat the day I started work at Harrington Enterprises. My breaths were shallow and my hands clutched at the employment letter that'd been faxed to me just the previous day. It all still felt so unreal. I'd gotten employed! I'd moved to San Francisco six months ago, leaving behind the embers of my past. It'd been a rough few months, but I'd managed to settle in nicely. I'd just lost my job at a small office I worked where I'd been in charge of balancing their books and I was confused and at wit’s end. That's when I'd received the employment mail. The mail stated I was to report for duty on Monday next week but I wasn't taking any chances. So here I was, …fidgeting in the HR department while I waited for the supervisor to arrive.I exhaled slowly, trying to calm my nerves as I waited, this job was really important to me. I couldn't screw things up. Lily's fees would soon be due and I couldn't go another month while scra

18 : Confrontation

Chapter 18 Confrontation Elena “What's the matter?” Jay noticed my uneasy expression and he nudged me slightly. “I…” I was just about to speak when a commotion from the front dragged my attention. “I will volunteer,” a woman stood up, she was at the other end of the hall. “I met all the requirements,” she added, adjusting her suit, she looked confident. 'Hmmm,’ I noticed Olivia's lips curling into a small smile as she stared at the woman. “That's Claire… isn't she Olivia's niece?... I heard so too…” Whispers and murmurs broke out amongst the employees and I heard bits and pieces. Olivia's niece? My heart sank as their words sank in, I had a bad feeling about this. Something wasn't right. Indeed. Olivia's eyes scanned across the room, “If there's no one else then we'll move—” “Wait,” Conor raised his hand, interrupting her. “Are there any other volunteers?” He asked again, gazing intently at the room. Olivia's eyes narrowed coldly in displeasure, she didn't look happy at

19: Still Scarred

Chapter 19 Still ScarredElena“Wait, you mean you got put on the team?” Jenna couldn't believe her ears. “Yup,” I nodded and I beamed a smile at her. “Conor put me on the team, I was lucky though.” “You were,” Jenna agreed, taking a seat beside me. I'd come back home late from the office, I'd been so preoccupied trying to get up to speed on Project Houston I hadn't even noticed the time. The thought of the project sent a thrill through me. The project was a massive one, I couldn't even wait to get started. For the first time in months, I actually felt like I was finally using my skills for something important. I had more chances to convince a mouse to fly than to use my skills in Father's company, not like he'd even given me a chance. What if I hadn't gone today? I shuddered to think of the thought. I was about to speak to Jenna when I saw her pick up her phone, and an all too familiar smirk reached her face. “Hey honey,” she chuckled like a little child and she waved at me
