Prologue

Hazel Lavoie’s POVMy heart thumped wildly in my chest as the car sped away from the airport of Ioannina, following the winding roads up the Pindus Mountains in Northern Greece. My destination was the kingdom of Aromania, perched in a valley on the highest range of the Pindus Mountains. I had been here two years ago when I was sixteen. It was the most memorable trip of my life. I had experienced my first shift and realized who my mate was. It was none other than my first and only crush, Stavros Petrakis. Two years older, Stavros was the son of Theodore Bergeron, the Delta of the Luceres Pack. I’ve known Stavros since I was born, but everything changed ten years ago when the Whiteridge Pack attacked and overpowered our pack. We lost our family, home, and our village, Lucania, in the Northern Territories of Canada. Zephyrus, the Alpha’s son, and Stavros helped us flee Lucania to avoid death. We took shelter in Zephyrus’s ancestral home in Aromania. After a month, my grandparents arri

Chapter One – Shattered

Hazel’s POV“Yes.” His jaws clenched as he turned away from me, but I wasn’t done with him. This was no rejection. I refused to accept his rejection without a valid cause. I ran after him, grabbing his arm to whirl him around to face me. The look on his face showed how shocked he was. I wasn’t violent at all, but he forced me tonight. He forced me to stand up for my rights as his mate. “You are my mate and nothing can change that. I refuse to accept your rejection, Stavros.” I released him and stormed away towards Hera’s room. Pain gripped my heart, and I repented my decision to come here. It wasn’t easy to fight my family and convince them. If Stavros didn’t accept me, I would have no option but to return to Alaska with a broken heart. It would surely kill me. I couldn’t go back without my mate. I would become a laughingstock at home. I trudged over to Hera’s room in defeat. What could have gone wrong? Had Stavros chosen someone else over me? But I was his fated mate! “Hazel? Hey

Chapter Two – His Rejection

Hazel’s POV “You look pale, Hazel! What’s wrong?” asked Hera the moment I entered our room and closed the door. All my resolve crumbled to dust, and I slumped to the bed, unable to control the tears any longer. “Stavros likes a princess. He wants to reject me tonight. He has asked me to meet him at dusk in the Secret Garden.” I broke down as uncontrollable sobs shook my body. Unable to take in the pain anymore, I covered my face with my hands. What had I ever done to deserve this? “What rubbish! Did he tell you her name?” I shook my head, and she grunted in disbelief. “I’m sure he’s bluffing. He doesn’t like anyone but you. He has always liked you, Hazel.” I removed my hands to look at her. Was she out of her mind?“No. He hates me. He asked me to go back to Alaska because he would never choose me as his mate. He said he doesn’t like me.” I sputtered as more tears fell from my eyes. Hera sighed and hugged me close. “I’ll have a word with him. Maybe something is disturbing him.” S

Chapter Three – Where’s Hazel?

Stavros’s POV“Stav, open your eyes!” I could hear Hera’s voice far away, but I couldn’t open my eyes. The pain in my chest was unbearable and I could feel myself slip into unconsciousness. I knew I couldn’t bear to reject Hazel, my mate. I loved her with all my heart and soul. For the last two years, she was all I could think of. I waited patiently for her to turn eighteen when I could claim her. A shuddering sigh escaped my lips. It was a lost dream now.“Stav? What happened to him? He was fine a while ago?” It was my best friend, Zephyrus. He was more than my best buddy. Zephyrus was my family, brother, confidante, and right hand. We might not be blood-related, but he meant everything to me. I wouldn’t have been alive if he hadn’t rescued me from the fire that burned my family alive. It was that fateful night almost ten years ago when the Whiteridge Pack used unfair means to overpower us. They torched our home while my dad, Theodore Bergeron, was out on the battlefield fighting t

Chapter Four – Attacked

Stavros’s POV Flashback - A Month Ago“What are those?” exclaimed Damon, drawing our attention to the darkness that enveloped us, covering us like a blanket. It was late afternoon, and we had arrived at the southern boundaries of Aromania to check on the sentinels stationed there. Two of them died after poisoned arrows pierced them from the sky. We scanned the vicinity but found no one. We were about to head back to report to King Georgios when Damon stopped us. Following his line of vision, we gasped with surprise to see almost twenty to thirty large winged dragons weaving through the clouds almost thousands of feet above us. “I think the Dragons are planning an attack on Aromania!” cried Leandros Vasiliou, who also had fled with us from Lucania ten years ago. “Where’s Zephyrus? We should stop them right away before it’s too late.” I surged ahead, following the movement of the giant-scaled beasts as they prepared for descent. “I’ll call him right away,” said Damon. There wasn’t

Chapter Five – My Cursed Life

Stavros’s POV Zephyrus targeted Thanos with his poisonous sword. “I won’t spare you or your king if you curse my beta. Leave Aromania right now.” Thanos chuckled, the malicious sound echoing around as he stepped backward. Were they leaving our kingdom?Relief washed over me to see Zephyrus’s threat working. However, my relief was short-lived. Thanos took out a small metal canister and went towards Drakos. In a split second, Thanos used his pocketknife to make a tiny slit on Drakos’ wrist and collected his blood in the canister. “What’s the holdup? Why aren’t you cursing the Beta? I want my revenge, Thanos,” yelled the dragon king.Instead of replying, Thanos approached me with an evil smile on his face. I looked around for help, only to see my companions busy fighting the dragons who had arrived. Eight of them surrounded Zephyrus and he single-handedly fought them all. There was no one to help me out. I had to fend for myself against the sly shaman and fight his evil plans. They c

Chapter Six – Family Pressure

Hazel’s POV I rang the doorbell of granny’s cottage in the sleepy suburban town of Tetlinville along the Chena River, almost 80 miles south of Fairbanks, Alaska. It has been my home for the last ten years yet I was apprehensive of granny Erika’s reaction to my return. After the way we had parted, I knew she wasn’t expecting me back. Or was she? Maybe she knew what was in store for me in Aromania. She knew I would get rejected for no fault of mine. Maybe that was why she objected to my plans. After all, my granny, Erika Payne, was a powerful witch in her youth. My mom, Carol Payne, was a witch too, but her first spell backfired and she got expelled from the coven. To escape punishment from the Supernatural Council, my mom fled with my aunt Cassie to Lucania. They led anonymous lives as omega when my dad met Mom and accepted her as his mate. Mom lived a life of anonymity and never disclosed her true identity to my dad. It was only after their death did my grandparents, Erika and Simon
