Hazel’s POV
I rang the doorbell of granny’s cottage in the sleepy suburban town of Tetlinville along the Chena River, almost 80 miles south of Fairbanks, Alaska. It has been my home for the last ten years yet I was apprehensive of granny Erika’s reaction to my return. After the way we had parted, I knew she wasn’t expecting me back. Or was she? Maybe she knew what was in store for me in Aromania. She knew I would get rejected for no fault of mine. Maybe that was why she objected to my plans. After all, my granny, Erika Payne, was a powerful witch in her youth.
My mom, Carol Payne, was a witch too, but her first spell backfired and she got expelled from the coven. To escape punishment from the Supernatural Council, my mom fled with my aunt Cassie to Lucania. They led anonymous lives as omega when my dad met Mom and accepted her as his mate. Mom lived a life of anonymity and never disclosed her true identity to my dad. It was only after their death did my grandparents, Erika and Simon Payne contact me.
I sighed at the memory of my grandpa. He was a kind man who loved granny Erika unconditionally, accepting her even after knowing her true identity. His pack, the Windcrest Pack, threatened to expel him if he accepted my granny as his mate. He paid no heed to their threats and left his pack for her. Ever since, they have lived a peaceful life here in Tetlinville.
Now, after my grandpa’s death, the new Alpha of Windcrest Pack, Zander Astros, wanted to make amends. He had requested granny Erika to join the pack, but she refused. So we were still rogues, and I didn’t mind at all. I couldn’t belong to the Windcrest Pack ever. I was a Lucerian by birth and would forever remain true to my pack, the Luceres Pack. It was my father’s pack and my home.
Now I was stuck here in Tetlinville forever. Maybe Zephyrus and Stavros would never want me to return to Lucania. After all, I wasn’t Stavros’s mate anymore. I wondered why Zephyrus wasn’t attacking the Whiteridge Pack and snatching back our territory from their clutches. Hera had told me they were planning to do so, but when?
The door opened, and I was brought out of my reverie. My granny smiled sadly at me. “I’m so glad you came home, Zell. I was so worried about you.” The sound of my nickname and her familiar loving voice brought tears to my eyes. I couldn’t stop them from overflowing. She was right all along. I shouldn’t have gone to Aromania at all.
“I’m sorry for not listening to you, granny.” She enveloped me in her wide bosom as if she knew what I was going through.
“Hush, dear. Now that you’re back, it doesn’t matter at all.” I sucked in a deep breath to compose myself. I couldn’t talk about the hurt my mate had inflicted on me. It was too personal to discuss. My granny seemed to understand my predicament and led me inside. She talked about everything else that happened in my absence rather than addressing the elephant in the room.
“Where’s Aunt Carmen?” I looked around for my aunt, who was my mom’s youngest sibling.
“Oh, Carmen has gone to meet Zander Astros.” My jaws dropped to the floor. Were they considering joining his pack? I wasn’t ready because I didn’t trust Alpha Zander. There was a catch behind his offer, and I somehow had the feeling it involved me. Even a blind wolf could sense Alpha Zander’s interest in me. I had met him once three years ago when my grandpa was alive. Ever since Alpha Zander has been after us to join his pack.
“Why?” Granny looked a little uncomfortable and walked away towards the kitchen.
“He wanted to meet me, but I couldn’t go so far,” admitted Granny. I followed her to the kitchen to stop them from going ahead with their plans.
“I hope you aren’t considering joining his pack?” Granny couldn’t look at me and it strengthened my suspicions further.
“You can’t live a rogue’s life forever, Hazel. Now that your fated mate has rejected you, don’t you think you should choose a good mate for yourself?” I gave her a blank look. So she knew Stavros had rejected me.
“How do you know Alpha Zander is good? I still love Stavros, granny. He has indeed rejected me, but I can’t move on from him. I’m sure he’ll realize his mistake one day and accept me into his life. I’ll wait for that day forever.”
Granny gave me a bewildered look as if that day would never happen in my life. “There’s no point in waiting for something that cannot happen, Zell. Just meet Zander once. He’s quite a charmer, and I’m sure he’ll keep you happy.” Her insistence irked me.
“How can you be so sure about Stavros? What am I missing here granny? How do you know so much about Stavros?” She gave me a hesitant look and walked out of the kitchen. I knew she was avoiding my questions, and I wasn’t letting this go.
“I have my ways, Zell. I can’t go against my coven and reveal my secrets to you. Let nature take its course. I’m sure you’ll find out the reality eventually.” I blinked in confusion when the doorbell buzzed. Granny opened the door and an excited Aunt Carmen came rushing into the house.
“I’m so excited. Guess who I met today?” She clasped her hands together with joy, her eyes sparkling. Granny chuckled at her state.
“Your second chance, mate. Who else?” Aunt Carmen gave her a disappointing look.
“It isn’t fair, mom. Why do you always use your magical powers? We can hardly surprise you ever! So I guess you already know who he is.” She grumbled and walked away to her room when she turned to look at me as if seeing me for the first time.
“Hazel? Hadn’t you left for Aromania forever?” Granny rolled her eyes with a told-you-so look.
“Her mate has rejected her. So she’s here for good.”
Strangely, Aunt Carmen looked thrilled instead of sympathizing with me. “Oh, I’ll inform Alpha Zander right away.” I gaped at her while Granny steered her away into her room. What was cooking between them?
I trudged towards my room with a heavy heart. I hadn’t expected to come back here at all. Instead, I had dreamed of a happy life with my mate in Lucania. Now, being back in the same dismal room shattered all my hopes of a happy life. I could hear Aunt Carmen’s excited squeals from the next room. I was glad she finally found her happiness. After her fated mate died in a vicious fight with a Lycan, Aunt Carmen had lost all hopes of finding another. Now, when she got a second chance in life, I was happy for her.
But I didn’t need a second chance in life. Despite the rejection, Stavros will always be the only one for me.
I freshened up and unpacked my stuff reluctantly. There was no other way than to move on from the heartbreak and concentrate on my dream career now. It was the only thing I had with me. Ever since I came here, Aunt Carmen’s dedication to her passion for teaching inspired me. She was now the most coveted teacher in Tetlinville High School. With her experience and dedication, she was an asset to any school she joined.
I wanted to be a teacher like her. So I would now focus on my education and pursue the subject of my choice.
A knock on my door made me groan. I knew Aunt Carmen and Granny were here to discuss their plans with me. I opened the door, and they poured into my room, ready to brainwash me.
“Hazel, I had a word with Alpha Zander Astros of the Windcrest Pack. He wants to meet you now,” said Aunt Carmen while my jaws dropped to the floor.
“Now? I just came home. I’m exhausted. What’s there to talk to him about? Didn’t you just meet him?” I panicked at the thought of meeting someone I barely knew. We had nothing to talk about, and I definitely wasn’t meeting him.
“He has offered us a home in his territory, Hazel. We’ll live a protected life. The pack’s doctor, Stuart Fleming, is my mate. With you two joining the pack, I wouldn’t have to worry. It’s a win-win situation, Hazel. Just meet him once.”
“I don’t want to meet him or join his pack. I’m fine here.”
I repented my decision to return home.
“You know I won’t let you live here alone, Hazel. You will meet Zander and accept his proposal. If you don’t, I’ll accept his proposal on your behalf,” said Granny sternly. I looked from one to the other helplessly, my heart fighting their decision.
Aunt Carmen’s phone buzzed, and she walked out of my room to take the call. I turned to face my granny.
“What does Alpha Zander want? Why he is after us?”
Granny gave me a look of disbelief. “I thought it was quite clear. He wants you.”
I scoffed at the obvious. I knew it. “No, Granny. I can’t move on from Stavros, and I refuse to accept Zander as my mate. It’s my final decision.”
Hazel’s POV Before Granny could react, Aunt Carmen rushed into my room, bursting with excitement. “Alpha Zander is on his way here!” I almost fell to the floor. “What? But why?” I panicked at the thought of facing him. What could be his urgency that he couldn’t wait for me to visit him?“To talk to you.” I was still bursting with curiosity, but Aunt Carmen and Granny had other plans for welcoming our guests. In the next thirty minutes, they churned up delicacies in the kitchen to serve the lucky alpha. I stood at the door, watching their enthusiasm with a feeling of dread clutching at my heart. “Why do you need so much food for one?” “His Beta, Mitchell, and Stuart are accompanying him. I’ll leave with Stuart. You can come over to Windcrest Village later.” My mouth hung open at the suddenness of everything. “Yes, don’t worry. We’ll be there in a week,” assured Granny while I looked from one to the other. “Wait a minute. I thought we were about to talk to the Alpha first. When did
Stavros's POVEight Years Later“Hazel has joined Fairbanks Elementary School as their Academic Head. Now she will live with the Windcrest Pack and accept Alpha Zander Astros as her chosen mate. Her life is finally on track while we’re still wasting our lives here. Zeph, when do you plan to get back to Lucania? I’m tired of preparing for war,” whined Hera as we gathered in Zephyrus’s room to discuss our next move. For almost a month, all we were doing was planning to fight the Whiteridge Pack and defeat them. We were tired of planning. There was no way of knowing when Zephyrus was planning to strike. We needed action now. I was losing my patience and so were the others. It had been eight long years since I had seen Hazel. She hadn’t kept in touch with Hera as well. The only update I had of her was about her enrollment in college eight years ago. Hera told me she had opted to live in a dorm room at the college campus and I spent every night worrying about her. I didn’t want her to cho
Hazel’s POV My heartbeats stopped as I gaped at Stavros in the car next to me. I couldn’t believe my eyes at all. Was he really here after eight long years? Why was he here? As far as I could remember, he knew no one in Fairbanks. Then did he come here for me? The signal turned green and Zander drove us ahead, unaware of the storm arising within me. To my surprise, Stavros followed us all the way to the hospital. How did he know Granny was unwell? I hadn’t told a soul yet. “Don’t worry, Hazel. She’ll be fine now.” I nodded absent-mindedly at Zander. I was indebted to him for taking care of my granny for the last eight years. While I stayed away from him and his pack to build my dream career, he never took out his grudge against Granny. After four years of college, he hadn’t contacted me to fulfill his ultimatum. I had almost thought he had moved on, but after my last visit to Granny, I knew I was wrong. Alpha Zander was still waiting for me.There was no use fighting my fate and my
Stavros’s POV I grabbed Alpha Zander’s throat and pinned him to the wall when my phone buzzed. He thrashed to get free, but the dragon in me was in full charge. The sight of my mate had aroused him from his dormant state just as it had energized me. I was ready to kill anyone who even glanced at her. She was mine. The Moon Goddess had created Hazel for me. I could accept, reject, love, or claim her. I could do anything with her. “Get your f*cking hands off me!” sputtered the weakling. He was clearly no match against my fiery strength.“Stay away from Hazel. She’s mine.” His eyes bulged out as he gasped for breath. Yet he didn’t surrender to my wish. “Never. You’ve f*cking rejected her.” My phone buzzed, and I felt it was Hazel calling me. I couldn’t take the call without teaching the Alpha a lesson he would never forget. “That’s none of your business. She’s my mate and I can do what I like with her. If I see you near her again, I’ll end your wretched life in a split second.” He c
Stavros’s POV I shook the snow off my body and focused on my destination, the hospital. Before I could reach it, I saw Hazel leave with an unknown older male who was almost her father’s age. Maybe he was her uncle. I watched them leave in a car. It was late in the night and I had no other choice than to seek shelter at a nearby hotel for the night. Obviously, I couldn’t confront her again in his presence, nor did I want to go back to the hospital. As I drove over to the nearest hotel, a few buildings down the busy street, I had the eerie feeling of being stalked. I knew the stalker was back. Turning into the hotel’s driveway, I scanned behind me through the rear-view mirror. It was then I saw him distinctly, crouching behind a pickup truck opposite the hotel entrance. It was the same male I had seen earlier. Did Alpha Zander send him to spy on me? It was the only plausible explanation I could find. It was late, and I parked my car and booked myself a room to freshen up. Afterward,
Stavros’s POV Snow crunched behind me and I slowly turned around to face my best buddy, Zephyrus Averoff. I had sensed his presence before he even reached me. “Hey!” I smiled as he embraced me briefly. I knew how he was feeling right now, as I was feeling the same. After years, we were standing at our favorite place overlooking our territory. My throat was choked with feelings and so was his. “Are you alone? Where are the others?” I swallowed the emotional upheaval threatening to overflow. This wasn’t the time for emotions. As Beta of the Luceres Pack, I had an important mission to undertake. “We’re all here. We’ve attacked the southern boundaries of Lucania and ousted the enemy from there. The others are busy preparing for the attack. Tomorrow night is the eve of the Bonding Ceremony when Alpha Ajax, the weakling, will take over as leader of the pack. Alpha Atticus is planning to retire. With all the pack members busy preparing for the ceremony the next day, it’s the perfect mome
Stavros’s POV I dumped Ajax’s bloodstained body on the porch of the packhouse, but before I could escape, Lena appeared at the door. In the pitch darkness, she saw me and snarled angrily, transforming into her wolf. Before she could attack me, Alpha Atticus appeared and howled for his dead son. It was enough to divert Lena’s attention, and I escaped. There wasn’t a minute to lose. I transformed and ran into the tunnel that led directly to the battlefield. It was the valley on the other side of Astros Hill, a small eroded hill on the eastern boundary of our village. Our pack had used it as a battlefield for as long as I could remember. It was the exact place where Alpha Achilles defeated Alpha Dimitrios twenty years ago. Zephyrus was waiting for me there, and I couldn’t let him down. I could hear the chaos at the packhouse as Alpha Atticus and Lena rushed towards the battlefield too, but I was faster. Negotiating through the empty tunnels, I reached the battlefield in minutes before
Hazel’s POV Tears blinded me as I stared at Hera’s message. I couldn’t believe my dream was finally coming true. For years I had longed to return to Lucania, to my pack, to my father’s home, and now I could. Zephyrus and Stavros have defeated the enemy and overpowered them. Lucania was ours now. The tears spilled and trickled down my cheeks to see the next message from Hera. Come home now, Hazel. Let’s live together like we used to. All of us are here. You’re the only one missing from our group.–Hera.Were they missing me? Was Stavros really missing me? Since he disappeared from here overnight, I couldn’t drive the guilt out of my mind. Did I drive him away? Now I knew the answer. Stavros left to fight for Lucania. It was a relief that I hadn’t driven him away from me. Or I could never face him again. With Granny discharged from the hospital and living with Aunt Carmen, I was free to go to Lucania. There was no compulsion now to join the Windcrest Pack and accept Alpha Zander as
Hazel’s POVA Fortnight LaterI watched my mate in awe as he expertly tended to the twins. It had been two weeks since he returned, yet it still felt surreal. In these two weeks, Stavros has learned to take care of the pups better than me. We didn’t need my aunts at all. He has been a doting father and a caring mate to me, making up for his absence during childbirth. He explained his lineage to me, but it didn’t matter at all that he was a wind wolf. To me, he was just my mate. The treasures he brought for me were priceless, not for their worth, but because they were a blessing from his father. He told me everything about his ordeal in the Wild Wain Village. I was glad he found his closure. The doorbell rang, bringing me out of my reverie. “I’ll get it. Here, you can change Helios,” said Stavros. He walked out of the nursery while I tucked the twins into bed. I could hear the hushed whispers downstairs. Who could be here now? I was looking forward to spending some time with Stavros af
Stavros’s POVShe released my mouth and grinned at the jaw-dropped look on my face. A million questions flitted across my head as she eased off my lap and started the car.“I don’t understand, Hazel. What happened to you? Umm, I mean how do you look so thin? Your featherweight too.”She chuckled as she drove on. “Oh, come on! I was never featherweight!”I watched her, feeling even more puzzled than before. “But what about the twins? I don’t understand how you reduced so much in a few days.”She laughed as if it was obvious. “I popped the twins out, silly. That’s why my tummy has shrunk!” My mouth hung with astonishment. What does “Popped” mean? Did she deliver my pups? If so, where were they, and why was she heading to the hospital?“Popped means gave birth. The day you were captured, I delivered the twins. Today I saw my gynecologist, Dr. Sylvia, who helped me give birth. It was a routine check-up.” My heart skipped a beat and I couldn’t help but say a silent prayer to the kind godde
Stavros’s POV“That’s sorted then. I’m sure you can sort the rest by yourselves. I’ll leave for home.” In my haste, I had completely forgotten about my father’s treasure and property.“Beta, can we discuss your father’s belongings, which are rightfully yours?” asked Delta Drupal.“Oh, yes. As I had mentioned earlier, I will give away everything to the pack members. You can use the treasure and the property for the welfare of the pack. Please prepare the legal documents and send them to me in Lucania for my signature.” I wanted the entire pack to know that my father’s precious possessions belonged to them. It wasn’t the Alpha’s personal property or wealth. I wouldn’t want anyone to take undue advantage of my father’s hard earned wealth.“Yes, Beta. I appreciate your kindness. Can we transform the mansion into our packhouse to shelter the members who are homeless?” asked Delta Drupal, eliciting cheers from the pack members. I knew I had made the right decision in choosing him as the Alp
Stavros’s POVZephyrus looked relieved to see me. “Stop the battle. They’ve released Beta Stavros,” he yelled, striding towards me. Even Alpha Alexios barked orders to stop the fight and step back.I gazed all around me at the beheaded, blood-smeared bodies lying all around the snow-covered terrain. The ground was transformed into a sea of blood, and my heart sank with despair. This wasn’t what I wanted for my father’s pack.“Beta Stavros, please save our pack. Only fifty of us are alive now,” pleaded Zeta Athlon, dropping to his knees in front of me in a sea of blood. The injury across his chest looked fatal, and nothing could save him now. They should have revolted against Beta Velez and released me earlier. It would have stopped the fight.“It’s your doing, Zeta. The fight has ceased and everyone can return home. We will leave your territory right now,” said Alpha Alexios.“Please stay the night. We want to discuss an important topic tomorrow once everyone is well-rested. It’s cruc
Stavros’s POVWith the sun up all day and night, keeping track of time within the room where I was locked was difficult. It was frustrating since I couldn’t escape with the tight security all around. The wind wolves were desperate to keep me here and could do anything to have their way. I didn’t fear for myself but for my family in Lucania.By now, I was sure their Zeta had reached Lucania to abduct Hazel. Had she given birth yet?I was restless as I paced the floor. There had to be a way to reach out to Hazel. I tried to mind-link with Hazel, but I was too far away to connect to her. Neither could I connect with Zephyrus this time, although we shared a good rapport with one another. Were the wind wolves blocking me out? With their unknown powers, there was a possibility that they were preventing me from reaching out for help. Did they possess psychic powers? After the cleansing ritual, I had completely severed all ties with Dyson. So even if I tried, I couldn’t connect with him.Ther
Hazel’s POVI opened my eyes to look around me. Yes, I was still alone at the hospital waiting to be discharged. I lost my senses after hearing the news of my mate’s capture. It devastated me, totally catching me unawares. I had expected Stavros to be injured, but never captured and taken away to some unknown enemy territory.I closed my eyes, unable to imagine what he was going through there. How could Zeph allow this to happen? Wasn’t it his duty to protect his Beta? Shouldn’t he rescue Stavros? I needed my phone to get some answers from Zephyrus. Somehow, I felt let down. All his life, Stavros had unconditionally stood by Zeph and now, when he was in the enemy territory, how could the pack members sit back and relax?I eased off the hospital bed to find out what was going on. I was supposed to get discharged today and planned to follow up with my doctor, but first, I needed to check up on the twins.Walking down to the nursery, I could feel the sympathetic glances thrown my way. Ob
Stavros’s POVThe car sped along the highway that took me through the boreal forest, high Alpine, and rolling tundra until we reached a desolate village. I knew the place since I had come here before. It was the Wild Wain Village, the territory of the Wind Wolves. The place was cold, desolate, and uninhabitable, submerged in darkness because the clouds hanging low completely blocked the pale rays of the Midnight sun.Beta Velez drove on with a grim look on his face while I watched for road signs to guide me back. There was no way I would live here. After meeting their Alpha and knowing their motive, I would surely escape. I wanted to ask so many things but the gag prevented me from speaking.“Mmm!” I struggled to get it off and Beta Velez stopped the car and untied my mouth at last. I sputtered, gasping for air. My mouth felt parched but with my hands still tied up, I doubted I would get water to drink.“Why have you brought me here? I want to meet your Alpha.” He drove on in silence,
Hazel’s POVI tossed and turned all afternoon; the pain escalating every minute. After Stavros’s call, I fell asleep from exhaustion. He still hadn’t returned when I woke up, and neither did the others. Now the dull throbbing ache in my cervix turned excruciating, and I gritted my teeth to bear it.The door opened, and Aunt Carla entered my room. “Hazel, we can’t delay this anymore. We have to take you to the hospital. Your contractions have started.”I gave her a frantic look. I couldn’t deliver without Stavros! He promised he would be there with me all along. “Please call Stavros, Aunt Carla. I can’t do this alone.” Tears pooled in my eyes and streamed down my cheeks while she gave me a hesitant look.“Stavros and the others are very busy at the borders. The enemy has attacked us and they cannot return. You have us with you, Hazel. Don’t delay this. You’re risking your life and also that of your pups.” I sighed and nodded, agreeing with their wishes.“Fine, I’ll go to the hospital.”
Stavros’s POVHazel’s call disturbed me a lot as I waited for some update on the attackers. True to his promise, Orion called after forty minutes with a shocking update. I wondered how he located the enemy so fast. It only meant one thing. They hadn’t left but were lurking nearby instead.“Yes, Orion. Have you located the enemy?”“Yes, Stav. They’ve taken shelter at the foothills of Mount Richardson. I’m keeping a watch on their activities and it doesn’t look hopeful. I think they’re heading over to launch an attack on us again.”My jaws dropped with horror. I had no idea the enemy was so close. “Do you have any idea who they are and what they want?”“No, Stav, but they aren’t normal shifters like us. Their speed is the fastest I’ve ever seen. I can’t get near as they can sense anything nearby. They’ve killed two rogues trespassing nearby and five bears already.” I frowned at his description.“How do they look? Do they possess any typical physical traits?” Orion considered my question
