Hazel’s POV
Before Granny could react, Aunt Carmen rushed into my room, bursting with excitement. “Alpha Zander is on his way here!”
I almost fell to the floor. “What? But why?” I panicked at the thought of facing him. What could be his urgency that he couldn’t wait for me to visit him?
“To talk to you.” I was still bursting with curiosity, but Aunt Carmen and Granny had other plans for welcoming our guests. In the next thirty minutes, they churned up delicacies in the kitchen to serve the lucky alpha. I stood at the door, watching their enthusiasm with a feeling of dread clutching at my heart. “Why do you need so much food for one?”
“His Beta, Mitchell, and Stuart are accompanying him. I’ll leave with Stuart. You can come over to Windcrest Village later.” My mouth hung open at the suddenness of everything.
“Yes, don’t worry. We’ll be there in a week,” assured Granny while I looked from one to the other.
“Wait a minute. I thought we were about to talk to the Alpha first. When did we decide to join them?” I hated when someone forced me to do something I didn’t wish to.
“We did when you had left home and I met my mate. I couldn’t leave Mom here all alone or ignore the second chance I got. What choice did I have?” said Aunt Carmen, and I sighed. She was right. I hadn’t ever thought of the possibility of Aunt Carmen meeting her mate and moving out.
“You don’t have to commit to Alpha Zander right away. You can take your time and pursue your education first,” said Granny and I smiled, loving the idea immensely. It gave me the excuse I needed. Maybe I would accept his offer temporarily and get myself enrolled in a good university in Fairbanks. That way, I wouldn’t have to live with the Windcrest Pack in their territory.
Therefore, I felt better when the doorbell buzzed. I was prepared with my escape plan. Aunt Carmen opened the door to welcome our guests. From my room, I peered through the gap in the door to check them out. I had seen Alpha Zander only once, but not his companions. Alpha Zander strode inside our house, his eyes seeking me out straightway. I gasped and hid behind the door. How did he sense my presence in my room? His tall, muscular frame filled the foyer and his cold gray eyes locked with mine again when I peered.
“It’s such an honor to have you here, Alpha. Please come inside,” said Aunt Carmen.
“Where are the others?” asked Alpha Zander, his gaze still on me.
“Granny is in the kitchen. I’ll call her.” Alpha Zander shook his head and took a step towards my room. I immediately stepped back to calm my jumpy nerves. It was better to meet him outside than in my room.
“Call Hazel too. I’ll talk to both.”
“Sure, please be seated. I’ll call her.” Thankfully, he accepted her suggestion and went into the living room.
Aunt Carmen greeted another male who looked like a doctor. I realized he was her mate when he gave her a brief hug before following her to the living room. The third guest, the beta, was older than both Zander and Stuart and looked uncomfortable in our house. Granny emerged from the kitchen with drinks and I sighed, knowing it was time to face the inevitable.
“Hazel, help me,” said Aunt Carmen as I went out of my room reluctantly. I avoided eye contact with the Alpha and escaped to the dining room to lay the table.
“Please join us for lunch. We can discuss everything afterward,” said Granny.
“I want to talk to your granddaughter in private, Erika.” My heartbeats raced in apprehension and I glanced at Aunt Carmen. We could distinctly hear their conversation from the dining room.
“Relax. I’m sure he just wants to know you,” comforted Aunt Carmen when I overheard my granny accepting his wish.
“Sure. I’ll just call her.” Before Granny could call me, I saw him at the door of the dining room.
“Can I have a word with you before I leave?” he said, his unwavering gaze sweeping over me. I hated him for intruding into my personal space.
“You can tell me here.” Aunt Carmen went out of the room, leaving me with the stranger.
“Can we sit down?” He gestured towards the chair and I eased onto it. He pulled the chair nearby and sat down.
“What is it about?” I couldn’t help the curiosity bubbling inside me. I couldn’t understand his urgency to meet me. When Aunt Carmen and Granny had already agreed to join his pack, why did he need to see me?
“Don’t you feel a thing about me? Don’t you feel the mate bond pulling us together?” I sat frozen for a minute, trying to understand what he had just said. What mate bond was he talking about? I shared a mate bond with only Stavros. He was my fated mate. Even after his rejection, I couldn’t sever the connection between us.
“No, I don’t feel a thing. My fated mate is and will be Stavros Petrakis, the one I love. There cannot be another in my life. I’m sure you’re mistaken, Alpha. We share nothing. Is this what you wanted to talk about?” I was about to get up when he grabbed my hand to stop me.
“No, I’m not at all mistaken. Your fated mate has rejected you, right?” I extricated my hand from his hold and glared at him, anger boiling in my veins. Even if Stavros had rejected me, I wasn’t looking for another. I didn’t want to encourage him at all.
“Yes, he did, but I’m not looking for another mate. No one can replace Stavros in my heart. I love him and I always will. You’re wasting your time after me, Alpha.” I rose to leave, not having any wish to listen to his mate theory. I felt no connection to him whatsoever.
“Your denying the mate bond between us won’t change a thing. Maybe you share a stronger bond with your fated mate, but that doesn’t negate what we share. A wolf can have more than one mate. Even if you don’t acknowledge me as your mate, I will always take care of you, Hazel. That’s why I want you to move to Windcrest Village with us. Now that your granny and aunt are joining our pack, I can’t allow you to live here alone. An unmated rogue’s life isn’t safe for you at all.”
I sighed and turned to face him. I had to address the issue for the last time. “Don’t worry, I wouldn’t be staying here all by myself. I’ll enroll myself in a college in Fairbanks and stay on the campus for the next four years at least.”
He gaped at me for a few minutes, as if my announcement had shocked him. “Which university?”
I shrugged, not having decided yet. “Let’s see.”
He sprang from his seat furiously and blocked my escape. “Fine. You have four years to educate yourself, Hazel. After that, I’ll seek you out and claim you as mine. Remember that.”
He stormed out of the room and house while I blinked, feeling totally confused by his declaration. Why was he pursuing a non-existent mate bond between us? How could he feel something I couldn’t?
His parting shot echoed in my head, filling me with dread. Would he remember his promise after four years? I hoped not.
I felt relieved that he left me alone for four years. I would escape to a place far away from here after four years. However, my relief was short-lived as Aunt Carmen came inside the dining room with a disapproving look on her face.
“What happened? What did you say to Alpha Zander? Why did he leave?”
“Nothing much. I just told him I was going away to Fairbanks for four years. I would live on the campus and get my dream degree.” Aunt Carmen shook her head with disappointment.
“When did you decide that? Why do you have to live in a dorm room when Windcrest is just twenty minutes away?” I was tired of the topic and faced her once and for all.
“Just to avoid Alpha Zander. He feels we share a mate bond, but I can’t feel any between us. I still love Stavros, and I always will.” I walked away to my room to check out the university farthest from Windcrest Village.
Throughout the time, I could feel them enjoying outside with Stuart Fleming, but I didn’t join them. I knew my family was furious with my decision to leave, but nothing could make me join the Windcrest Pack. I was a Lucerian and I would always remain so.
I chose the Early Education Program at the prestigious University of Fairbanks, which was quite far from Windcrest Village. It was impossible for me to commute daily. After applying for the course, I felt relieved and went out to bond with Aunt Carmen’s mate. After all, he was now a part of the family.
After a fortnight, I completed all the admission formalities and moved to the university campus. My parents and grandpa had left me enough money to get myself educated. Maybe I would get a part-time job after I settled down. My granny and aunt Carmen joined Windcrest Pack and settled down in their territory.
I didn’t meet Alpha Zander after that fateful night, but Granny informed me how he arranged for a house for her to stay in. She was already singing praises of him for taking good care of her. I was indebted to him, but that didn’t mean I would ever accept him as my mate.
Stavros's POVEight Years Later“Hazel has joined Fairbanks Elementary School as their Academic Head. Now she will live with the Windcrest Pack and accept Alpha Zander Astros as her chosen mate. Her life is finally on track while we’re still wasting our lives here. Zeph, when do you plan to get back to Lucania? I’m tired of preparing for war,” whined Hera as we gathered in Zephyrus’s room to discuss our next move. For almost a month, all we were doing was planning to fight the Whiteridge Pack and defeat them. We were tired of planning. There was no way of knowing when Zephyrus was planning to strike. We needed action now. I was losing my patience and so were the others. It had been eight long years since I had seen Hazel. She hadn’t kept in touch with Hera as well. The only update I had of her was about her enrollment in college eight years ago. Hera told me she had opted to live in a dorm room at the college campus and I spent every night worrying about her. I didn’t want her to cho
Hazel’s POV My heartbeats stopped as I gaped at Stavros in the car next to me. I couldn’t believe my eyes at all. Was he really here after eight long years? Why was he here? As far as I could remember, he knew no one in Fairbanks. Then did he come here for me? The signal turned green and Zander drove us ahead, unaware of the storm arising within me. To my surprise, Stavros followed us all the way to the hospital. How did he know Granny was unwell? I hadn’t told a soul yet. “Don’t worry, Hazel. She’ll be fine now.” I nodded absent-mindedly at Zander. I was indebted to him for taking care of my granny for the last eight years. While I stayed away from him and his pack to build my dream career, he never took out his grudge against Granny. After four years of college, he hadn’t contacted me to fulfill his ultimatum. I had almost thought he had moved on, but after my last visit to Granny, I knew I was wrong. Alpha Zander was still waiting for me.There was no use fighting my fate and my
Stavros’s POV I grabbed Alpha Zander’s throat and pinned him to the wall when my phone buzzed. He thrashed to get free, but the dragon in me was in full charge. The sight of my mate had aroused him from his dormant state just as it had energized me. I was ready to kill anyone who even glanced at her. She was mine. The Moon Goddess had created Hazel for me. I could accept, reject, love, or claim her. I could do anything with her. “Get your f*cking hands off me!” sputtered the weakling. He was clearly no match against my fiery strength.“Stay away from Hazel. She’s mine.” His eyes bulged out as he gasped for breath. Yet he didn’t surrender to my wish. “Never. You’ve f*cking rejected her.” My phone buzzed, and I felt it was Hazel calling me. I couldn’t take the call without teaching the Alpha a lesson he would never forget. “That’s none of your business. She’s my mate and I can do what I like with her. If I see you near her again, I’ll end your wretched life in a split second.” He c
Stavros’s POV I shook the snow off my body and focused on my destination, the hospital. Before I could reach it, I saw Hazel leave with an unknown older male who was almost her father’s age. Maybe he was her uncle. I watched them leave in a car. It was late in the night and I had no other choice than to seek shelter at a nearby hotel for the night. Obviously, I couldn’t confront her again in his presence, nor did I want to go back to the hospital. As I drove over to the nearest hotel, a few buildings down the busy street, I had the eerie feeling of being stalked. I knew the stalker was back. Turning into the hotel’s driveway, I scanned behind me through the rear-view mirror. It was then I saw him distinctly, crouching behind a pickup truck opposite the hotel entrance. It was the same male I had seen earlier. Did Alpha Zander send him to spy on me? It was the only plausible explanation I could find. It was late, and I parked my car and booked myself a room to freshen up. Afterward,
Stavros’s POV Snow crunched behind me and I slowly turned around to face my best buddy, Zephyrus Averoff. I had sensed his presence before he even reached me. “Hey!” I smiled as he embraced me briefly. I knew how he was feeling right now, as I was feeling the same. After years, we were standing at our favorite place overlooking our territory. My throat was choked with feelings and so was his. “Are you alone? Where are the others?” I swallowed the emotional upheaval threatening to overflow. This wasn’t the time for emotions. As Beta of the Luceres Pack, I had an important mission to undertake. “We’re all here. We’ve attacked the southern boundaries of Lucania and ousted the enemy from there. The others are busy preparing for the attack. Tomorrow night is the eve of the Bonding Ceremony when Alpha Ajax, the weakling, will take over as leader of the pack. Alpha Atticus is planning to retire. With all the pack members busy preparing for the ceremony the next day, it’s the perfect mome
Stavros’s POV I dumped Ajax’s bloodstained body on the porch of the packhouse, but before I could escape, Lena appeared at the door. In the pitch darkness, she saw me and snarled angrily, transforming into her wolf. Before she could attack me, Alpha Atticus appeared and howled for his dead son. It was enough to divert Lena’s attention, and I escaped. There wasn’t a minute to lose. I transformed and ran into the tunnel that led directly to the battlefield. It was the valley on the other side of Astros Hill, a small eroded hill on the eastern boundary of our village. Our pack had used it as a battlefield for as long as I could remember. It was the exact place where Alpha Achilles defeated Alpha Dimitrios twenty years ago. Zephyrus was waiting for me there, and I couldn’t let him down. I could hear the chaos at the packhouse as Alpha Atticus and Lena rushed towards the battlefield too, but I was faster. Negotiating through the empty tunnels, I reached the battlefield in minutes before
Hazel’s POV Tears blinded me as I stared at Hera’s message. I couldn’t believe my dream was finally coming true. For years I had longed to return to Lucania, to my pack, to my father’s home, and now I could. Zephyrus and Stavros have defeated the enemy and overpowered them. Lucania was ours now. The tears spilled and trickled down my cheeks to see the next message from Hera. Come home now, Hazel. Let’s live together like we used to. All of us are here. You’re the only one missing from our group.–Hera.Were they missing me? Was Stavros really missing me? Since he disappeared from here overnight, I couldn’t drive the guilt out of my mind. Did I drive him away? Now I knew the answer. Stavros left to fight for Lucania. It was a relief that I hadn’t driven him away from me. Or I could never face him again. With Granny discharged from the hospital and living with Aunt Carmen, I was free to go to Lucania. There was no compulsion now to join the Windcrest Pack and accept Alpha Zander as
Stavros’s POV I returned from the Astral Mountains, where Hera was last seen before getting abducted. For the last twenty-four hours, I had looked for her everywhere, but we still had no clue to her whereabouts. I was now planning to take Zephyrus’s helicopter to scan every place in and around Lucania. We had to find Hera at all costs. We wouldn’t let the feral monster harm her. I strode into the packhouse to seek Zephyrus’s permission to use his copter when I noted the stressed look on everyone’s faces. “What happened?” I asked Orion, who stood waiting for Zephyrus. “The female prisoner escaped last night. Alpha Zephyrus and Leandros captured her and brought her back. She’s in the prison complex, and we’re waiting for Alpha Zephyrus here. He summoned us urgently for a meeting with the Council of Alphas.” I knew he was talking about Lena, but before I could ask him anything, Zephyrus stormed inside, looking furious. “Stav, stay back after the meeting. I need to talk to you urgentl
Hazel’s POVA Fortnight LaterI watched my mate in awe as he expertly tended to the twins. It had been two weeks since he returned, yet it still felt surreal. In these two weeks, Stavros has learned to take care of the pups better than me. We didn’t need my aunts at all. He has been a doting father and a caring mate to me, making up for his absence during childbirth. He explained his lineage to me, but it didn’t matter at all that he was a wind wolf. To me, he was just my mate. The treasures he brought for me were priceless, not for their worth, but because they were a blessing from his father. He told me everything about his ordeal in the Wild Wain Village. I was glad he found his closure. The doorbell rang, bringing me out of my reverie. “I’ll get it. Here, you can change Helios,” said Stavros. He walked out of the nursery while I tucked the twins into bed. I could hear the hushed whispers downstairs. Who could be here now? I was looking forward to spending some time with Stavros af
Stavros’s POVShe released my mouth and grinned at the jaw-dropped look on my face. A million questions flitted across my head as she eased off my lap and started the car.“I don’t understand, Hazel. What happened to you? Umm, I mean how do you look so thin? Your featherweight too.”She chuckled as she drove on. “Oh, come on! I was never featherweight!”I watched her, feeling even more puzzled than before. “But what about the twins? I don’t understand how you reduced so much in a few days.”She laughed as if it was obvious. “I popped the twins out, silly. That’s why my tummy has shrunk!” My mouth hung with astonishment. What does “Popped” mean? Did she deliver my pups? If so, where were they, and why was she heading to the hospital?“Popped means gave birth. The day you were captured, I delivered the twins. Today I saw my gynecologist, Dr. Sylvia, who helped me give birth. It was a routine check-up.” My heart skipped a beat and I couldn’t help but say a silent prayer to the kind godde
Stavros’s POV“That’s sorted then. I’m sure you can sort the rest by yourselves. I’ll leave for home.” In my haste, I had completely forgotten about my father’s treasure and property.“Beta, can we discuss your father’s belongings, which are rightfully yours?” asked Delta Drupal.“Oh, yes. As I had mentioned earlier, I will give away everything to the pack members. You can use the treasure and the property for the welfare of the pack. Please prepare the legal documents and send them to me in Lucania for my signature.” I wanted the entire pack to know that my father’s precious possessions belonged to them. It wasn’t the Alpha’s personal property or wealth. I wouldn’t want anyone to take undue advantage of my father’s hard earned wealth.“Yes, Beta. I appreciate your kindness. Can we transform the mansion into our packhouse to shelter the members who are homeless?” asked Delta Drupal, eliciting cheers from the pack members. I knew I had made the right decision in choosing him as the Alp
Stavros’s POVZephyrus looked relieved to see me. “Stop the battle. They’ve released Beta Stavros,” he yelled, striding towards me. Even Alpha Alexios barked orders to stop the fight and step back.I gazed all around me at the beheaded, blood-smeared bodies lying all around the snow-covered terrain. The ground was transformed into a sea of blood, and my heart sank with despair. This wasn’t what I wanted for my father’s pack.“Beta Stavros, please save our pack. Only fifty of us are alive now,” pleaded Zeta Athlon, dropping to his knees in front of me in a sea of blood. The injury across his chest looked fatal, and nothing could save him now. They should have revolted against Beta Velez and released me earlier. It would have stopped the fight.“It’s your doing, Zeta. The fight has ceased and everyone can return home. We will leave your territory right now,” said Alpha Alexios.“Please stay the night. We want to discuss an important topic tomorrow once everyone is well-rested. It’s cruc
Stavros’s POVWith the sun up all day and night, keeping track of time within the room where I was locked was difficult. It was frustrating since I couldn’t escape with the tight security all around. The wind wolves were desperate to keep me here and could do anything to have their way. I didn’t fear for myself but for my family in Lucania.By now, I was sure their Zeta had reached Lucania to abduct Hazel. Had she given birth yet?I was restless as I paced the floor. There had to be a way to reach out to Hazel. I tried to mind-link with Hazel, but I was too far away to connect to her. Neither could I connect with Zephyrus this time, although we shared a good rapport with one another. Were the wind wolves blocking me out? With their unknown powers, there was a possibility that they were preventing me from reaching out for help. Did they possess psychic powers? After the cleansing ritual, I had completely severed all ties with Dyson. So even if I tried, I couldn’t connect with him.Ther
Hazel’s POVI opened my eyes to look around me. Yes, I was still alone at the hospital waiting to be discharged. I lost my senses after hearing the news of my mate’s capture. It devastated me, totally catching me unawares. I had expected Stavros to be injured, but never captured and taken away to some unknown enemy territory.I closed my eyes, unable to imagine what he was going through there. How could Zeph allow this to happen? Wasn’t it his duty to protect his Beta? Shouldn’t he rescue Stavros? I needed my phone to get some answers from Zephyrus. Somehow, I felt let down. All his life, Stavros had unconditionally stood by Zeph and now, when he was in the enemy territory, how could the pack members sit back and relax?I eased off the hospital bed to find out what was going on. I was supposed to get discharged today and planned to follow up with my doctor, but first, I needed to check up on the twins.Walking down to the nursery, I could feel the sympathetic glances thrown my way. Ob
Stavros’s POVThe car sped along the highway that took me through the boreal forest, high Alpine, and rolling tundra until we reached a desolate village. I knew the place since I had come here before. It was the Wild Wain Village, the territory of the Wind Wolves. The place was cold, desolate, and uninhabitable, submerged in darkness because the clouds hanging low completely blocked the pale rays of the Midnight sun.Beta Velez drove on with a grim look on his face while I watched for road signs to guide me back. There was no way I would live here. After meeting their Alpha and knowing their motive, I would surely escape. I wanted to ask so many things but the gag prevented me from speaking.“Mmm!” I struggled to get it off and Beta Velez stopped the car and untied my mouth at last. I sputtered, gasping for air. My mouth felt parched but with my hands still tied up, I doubted I would get water to drink.“Why have you brought me here? I want to meet your Alpha.” He drove on in silence,
Hazel’s POVI tossed and turned all afternoon; the pain escalating every minute. After Stavros’s call, I fell asleep from exhaustion. He still hadn’t returned when I woke up, and neither did the others. Now the dull throbbing ache in my cervix turned excruciating, and I gritted my teeth to bear it.The door opened, and Aunt Carla entered my room. “Hazel, we can’t delay this anymore. We have to take you to the hospital. Your contractions have started.”I gave her a frantic look. I couldn’t deliver without Stavros! He promised he would be there with me all along. “Please call Stavros, Aunt Carla. I can’t do this alone.” Tears pooled in my eyes and streamed down my cheeks while she gave me a hesitant look.“Stavros and the others are very busy at the borders. The enemy has attacked us and they cannot return. You have us with you, Hazel. Don’t delay this. You’re risking your life and also that of your pups.” I sighed and nodded, agreeing with their wishes.“Fine, I’ll go to the hospital.”
Stavros’s POVHazel’s call disturbed me a lot as I waited for some update on the attackers. True to his promise, Orion called after forty minutes with a shocking update. I wondered how he located the enemy so fast. It only meant one thing. They hadn’t left but were lurking nearby instead.“Yes, Orion. Have you located the enemy?”“Yes, Stav. They’ve taken shelter at the foothills of Mount Richardson. I’m keeping a watch on their activities and it doesn’t look hopeful. I think they’re heading over to launch an attack on us again.”My jaws dropped with horror. I had no idea the enemy was so close. “Do you have any idea who they are and what they want?”“No, Stav, but they aren’t normal shifters like us. Their speed is the fastest I’ve ever seen. I can’t get near as they can sense anything nearby. They’ve killed two rogues trespassing nearby and five bears already.” I frowned at his description.“How do they look? Do they possess any typical physical traits?” Orion considered my question
