Hazel’s POV
My heartbeats stopped as I gaped at Stavros in the car next to me. I couldn’t believe my eyes at all. Was he really here after eight long years? Why was he here? As far as I could remember, he knew no one in Fairbanks. Then did he come here for me?
The signal turned green and Zander drove us ahead, unaware of the storm arising within me. To my surprise, Stavros followed us all the way to the hospital. How did he know Granny was unwell? I hadn’t told a soul yet.
“Don’t worry, Hazel. She’ll be fine now.” I nodded absent-mindedly at Zander. I was indebted to him for taking care of my granny for the last eight years. While I stayed away from him and his pack to build my dream career, he never took out his grudge against Granny. After four years of college, he hadn’t contacted me to fulfill his ultimatum. I had almost thought he had moved on, but after my last visit to Granny, I knew I was wrong. Alpha Zander was still waiting for me.
There was no use fighting my fate and my feelings any longer. I agreed to accept him as my mate, but Granny was down with pneumonia and had to be hospitalized. So, maybe I would accept Zander after Granny recovered.
Now that I considered moving on, what was Stavros doing here? He had taken no update on me after rejecting me so cruelly. For him, I might as well have been dead. His rejection still hurt me, but I was used to the pain by now. I hardly kept in touch with Hera or Zephyrus as they reminded me of the dream life I wanted with Stavros. It was impossible to forget my first love, but I was still trying. Why did he have to appear in front of me after so many years?
“Drive faster, Zander.” My gaze went towards Stavros’s car, tailing us.
“Is he following you?” I focused my attention on Zander. How did he know Stavros was following me?
“Yes. How do you know?” He smiled as he picked up speed.
“Your reaction speaks louder than words. So, is he your fated mate? Is he the one who rejected you and forgot about you for almost a decade?” I nodded and looked out of the window to swallow the pain constricting my throat.
It wouldn’t have hurt me so much if it would have been someone else. I hadn’t expected this from Stavros. I knew him from the day I was born. He always took care of me. Our hearts were connected, and he was an inseparable part of my life. He protected me, took care of me, rescued me, and pampered me. Then what changed in the two years we were apart? How did he suddenly fall for Princess Anastasia and forget me?
“Will you forgive him and accept him back as your mate?” I could sense the fear in Alpha Zander’s voice.
“No. I’m sure he isn’t here to ask for my forgiveness.”
I glanced at Zander with a puzzled look on my face. Why was he so upset about Stavros’s presence?
I was sure Zander knew there was no mate bond between me and him. It was a lie. I still had no idea why Zander was pursuing me. Nor could I understand his motive behind sheltering and taking care of granny. It couldn’t be love because I didn’t feel it in his actions or words.
Therefore, even after eight years, I still had no clue about Alpha Zander’s motive for pursuing me.
He stopped the car in the hospital parking space and we rushed in. I turned to see Stavros still following us. What was he planning to do? I didn’t want a confrontation here. Zander steered me into granny’s room and I locked the door after us.
“I’ll talk to him,” said Zander, but I grabbed his sleeves to stop him.
“No. He’ll leave if we stay here for a while. Please don’t pick up a fight with him.” I had no idea why Stavros was here, but his body language wasn’t at all friendly. I could see the fiery glow in his eyes as he stormed after us. It was the same aura I had seen in him eight years ago in Aromania. There was no reason for him to be angry with me after so many years.
“I don’t think so. He’s here to snatch you back from me.” We stood beside granny’s bed but she was in deep sleep. I wanted to correct Zander and point out the truth to him. I hadn’t yet accepted him as my mate. So, I didn’t belong to anyone now.
I was happy with my job and career. The last thing I needed right now was two males fighting over me!
I sat down beside granny and closed my eyes. Strangely, I could feel Stavros outside pacing the lobby agitatedly. How could I feel him when we had rejected one another?
“I’ll have a word with her, doctor.” I turned to give Alpha Zander a suspicious look. It seemed he was itching to pick up a fight with Stavros.
“Not now.” He glared at me when there was a knock on the door. Was it Stavros?
Zander opened the door, and the doctor entered.
“How’s she doing, doctor?” asked Zander, while I waited for the doctor’s reply. Granny had been down with pneumonia and if Zander hadn’t admitted her here forcefully, her condition would have deteriorated further. The infection would have entered her lungs and it would have been fatal for her. I felt guilty for not taking care of my granny well. Aunt Carmen had four pups to take care of, along with a full-time job. Therefore, I was the only one who could take care of granny.
Granny’s health was the only reason I considered accepting Alpha Zander as my chosen mate. Granny didn’t wish to live anywhere else, and I had no other choice than to join the Windcrest Pack.
It seemed living in Lucania with my pack would remain a distant dream forever.
“She’s improving, but we would like to observe her for another twenty-four hours.” The doctor’s reply brought me back to reality.
The doctor left and so did Zander to complete the hospital formalities. Granny opened her bleary eyes and broke down to see me at her bedside. The door opened and Aunt Carmen came rushing in.
“If you weren’t feeling well, why didn’t you call me, mom?” Aunt Carmen looked upset as she sat at Granny’s bedside.
“I didn’t want to disturb you.” Aunt Carmen looked even more upset.
“I won’t get disturbed at all. Now, you’ll move in with us, Mom. I won’t let you live alone anymore.”
I felt relieved that I wouldn’t have to accept Zander and join his pack, for Granny’s sake. I was dreading the decision every minute.
“That won’t be necessary. Hazel will join our pack and accept Zander as her fated mate. I’ll live with them.” Aunt Carmen gave me a doubtful look. I was sure she could feel the hesitation in me.
“Until it happens, you can move in with me.”
“Yes, granny. Please listen to Aunt Carmen. I’m not sure when I’ll be able to figure this out.” The disappointed look in Granny’s eyes made me feel guilty, but I was helpless. I just couldn’t accept Alpha Zander despite everything he did for me. Something didn’t feel right about him. He was too good to be true. Surely there was a catch to his offer. What could it be?
“I can wait. There’s no urgency,” protested Granny and we groaned at her stubbornness.
“This time you have no say in the matter, Mom. I’m staying here until your discharge. The pups are at home with their dad. So I’m sorted.” I sprang from my chair, feeling relieved to have someone with granny.
“I’ll check what Zander is up to. It has been almost twenty-five minutes since he has gone to the reception desk. Maybe he needs help.” I rushed out. Not for Zander. I was worried Stavros would pick up a fight with him. I emerged from the room, but there was no sign of the duo in the lobby. They weren’t there in the elevator as I went down to the reception desk.
I looked around the reception area, but Zander was nowhere in sight. I was right. They were surely fighting somewhere. I inquired at the reception, but they had no information about Zander. It seemed he hadn’t even reached the reception desk.
I was at my wit’s end. Where would I look for them? I didn’t have Zander’s number. So, the only one I could call was Stavros. I didn’t need to check his number because I knew it by heart. If he hadn’t changed it, maybe I could call him and find out. After looking for them the last time, I gave up and took out my phone.
I punched in Stavros’s phone number and waited with bated breath for him to accept my call.
Stavros’s POV I grabbed Alpha Zander’s throat and pinned him to the wall when my phone buzzed. He thrashed to get free, but the dragon in me was in full charge. The sight of my mate had aroused him from his dormant state just as it had energized me. I was ready to kill anyone who even glanced at her. She was mine. The Moon Goddess had created Hazel for me. I could accept, reject, love, or claim her. I could do anything with her. “Get your f*cking hands off me!” sputtered the weakling. He was clearly no match against my fiery strength.“Stay away from Hazel. She’s mine.” His eyes bulged out as he gasped for breath. Yet he didn’t surrender to my wish. “Never. You’ve f*cking rejected her.” My phone buzzed, and I felt it was Hazel calling me. I couldn’t take the call without teaching the Alpha a lesson he would never forget. “That’s none of your business. She’s my mate and I can do what I like with her. If I see you near her again, I’ll end your wretched life in a split second.” He c
Stavros’s POV I shook the snow off my body and focused on my destination, the hospital. Before I could reach it, I saw Hazel leave with an unknown older male who was almost her father’s age. Maybe he was her uncle. I watched them leave in a car. It was late in the night and I had no other choice than to seek shelter at a nearby hotel for the night. Obviously, I couldn’t confront her again in his presence, nor did I want to go back to the hospital. As I drove over to the nearest hotel, a few buildings down the busy street, I had the eerie feeling of being stalked. I knew the stalker was back. Turning into the hotel’s driveway, I scanned behind me through the rear-view mirror. It was then I saw him distinctly, crouching behind a pickup truck opposite the hotel entrance. It was the same male I had seen earlier. Did Alpha Zander send him to spy on me? It was the only plausible explanation I could find. It was late, and I parked my car and booked myself a room to freshen up. Afterward,
Stavros’s POV Snow crunched behind me and I slowly turned around to face my best buddy, Zephyrus Averoff. I had sensed his presence before he even reached me. “Hey!” I smiled as he embraced me briefly. I knew how he was feeling right now, as I was feeling the same. After years, we were standing at our favorite place overlooking our territory. My throat was choked with feelings and so was his. “Are you alone? Where are the others?” I swallowed the emotional upheaval threatening to overflow. This wasn’t the time for emotions. As Beta of the Luceres Pack, I had an important mission to undertake. “We’re all here. We’ve attacked the southern boundaries of Lucania and ousted the enemy from there. The others are busy preparing for the attack. Tomorrow night is the eve of the Bonding Ceremony when Alpha Ajax, the weakling, will take over as leader of the pack. Alpha Atticus is planning to retire. With all the pack members busy preparing for the ceremony the next day, it’s the perfect mome
Stavros’s POV I dumped Ajax’s bloodstained body on the porch of the packhouse, but before I could escape, Lena appeared at the door. In the pitch darkness, she saw me and snarled angrily, transforming into her wolf. Before she could attack me, Alpha Atticus appeared and howled for his dead son. It was enough to divert Lena’s attention, and I escaped. There wasn’t a minute to lose. I transformed and ran into the tunnel that led directly to the battlefield. It was the valley on the other side of Astros Hill, a small eroded hill on the eastern boundary of our village. Our pack had used it as a battlefield for as long as I could remember. It was the exact place where Alpha Achilles defeated Alpha Dimitrios twenty years ago. Zephyrus was waiting for me there, and I couldn’t let him down. I could hear the chaos at the packhouse as Alpha Atticus and Lena rushed towards the battlefield too, but I was faster. Negotiating through the empty tunnels, I reached the battlefield in minutes before
Hazel’s POV Tears blinded me as I stared at Hera’s message. I couldn’t believe my dream was finally coming true. For years I had longed to return to Lucania, to my pack, to my father’s home, and now I could. Zephyrus and Stavros have defeated the enemy and overpowered them. Lucania was ours now. The tears spilled and trickled down my cheeks to see the next message from Hera. Come home now, Hazel. Let’s live together like we used to. All of us are here. You’re the only one missing from our group.–Hera.Were they missing me? Was Stavros really missing me? Since he disappeared from here overnight, I couldn’t drive the guilt out of my mind. Did I drive him away? Now I knew the answer. Stavros left to fight for Lucania. It was a relief that I hadn’t driven him away from me. Or I could never face him again. With Granny discharged from the hospital and living with Aunt Carmen, I was free to go to Lucania. There was no compulsion now to join the Windcrest Pack and accept Alpha Zander as
Stavros’s POV I returned from the Astral Mountains, where Hera was last seen before getting abducted. For the last twenty-four hours, I had looked for her everywhere, but we still had no clue to her whereabouts. I was now planning to take Zephyrus’s helicopter to scan every place in and around Lucania. We had to find Hera at all costs. We wouldn’t let the feral monster harm her. I strode into the packhouse to seek Zephyrus’s permission to use his copter when I noted the stressed look on everyone’s faces. “What happened?” I asked Orion, who stood waiting for Zephyrus. “The female prisoner escaped last night. Alpha Zephyrus and Leandros captured her and brought her back. She’s in the prison complex, and we’re waiting for Alpha Zephyrus here. He summoned us urgently for a meeting with the Council of Alphas.” I knew he was talking about Lena, but before I could ask him anything, Zephyrus stormed inside, looking furious. “Stav, stay back after the meeting. I need to talk to you urgentl
Hazel’s POV I drove away from Stavros’s house in a fit of jealousy. I was right all along. He was living with another female now. Everything was over between us. I wouldn’t let it affect me at all. It was good that I had the support of my family and friends. I didn’t need him in my life. When I couldn’t unlock the main door with my keys, I was in a soup, but Dante sent Aunt Cassie from the packhouse. She had a spare set of keys with her and returned to Lucania last night after Zephyrus gained control over Lucania. For the last twenty years, she had been living a rogue’s life in Inuvik instead of returning to granny’s house in Alaska. Obviously, I knew the reason behind it. She wanted a free life! The keys did the job, and I dumped my luggage at home. Aunt Cassie already had it cleaned this morning, so I was saved from the trouble. I went to the packhouse to meet Aunt Carla when Aunt Cassie announced Stavros’s wish to see me. I panicked and avoided him, but the restlessness drove me
Stavros’s POV I sped on my snowmobile far away from Hazel's house. Dyson took over as I crossed Lake Lucia, a tiny frozen lake in a secluded area off the main roads. I was now transformed into an ugly Grypwolf, breathing fire. Thankfully, I was far away from Hazel now. I could sense Dyson fighting with Vyros to the surface and had to escape abruptly. Stopping the snowmobile, I took shelter near a snowy ledge. With the pack’s hunters on the prowl, I couldn’t risk my life. No one in their right senses would believe who I actually was. Shifters here in Lucania had no idea about the Grypwolves. They were an extinct species inhabiting the Pindus Mountains in Europe. I took deep breaths to calm the dragon in me. He couldn’t react this way every time I was near Hazel. There has to be a way to stop Dyson. ‘Go back inside Dyson! Talking, touching, or kissing my mate shouldn’t invoke your wrath. It’s wrong and against the curse! I’ll consult a more powerful witch to punish you for going agai
Hazel’s POVA Fortnight LaterI watched my mate in awe as he expertly tended to the twins. It had been two weeks since he returned, yet it still felt surreal. In these two weeks, Stavros has learned to take care of the pups better than me. We didn’t need my aunts at all. He has been a doting father and a caring mate to me, making up for his absence during childbirth. He explained his lineage to me, but it didn’t matter at all that he was a wind wolf. To me, he was just my mate. The treasures he brought for me were priceless, not for their worth, but because they were a blessing from his father. He told me everything about his ordeal in the Wild Wain Village. I was glad he found his closure. The doorbell rang, bringing me out of my reverie. “I’ll get it. Here, you can change Helios,” said Stavros. He walked out of the nursery while I tucked the twins into bed. I could hear the hushed whispers downstairs. Who could be here now? I was looking forward to spending some time with Stavros af
Stavros’s POVShe released my mouth and grinned at the jaw-dropped look on my face. A million questions flitted across my head as she eased off my lap and started the car.“I don’t understand, Hazel. What happened to you? Umm, I mean how do you look so thin? Your featherweight too.”She chuckled as she drove on. “Oh, come on! I was never featherweight!”I watched her, feeling even more puzzled than before. “But what about the twins? I don’t understand how you reduced so much in a few days.”She laughed as if it was obvious. “I popped the twins out, silly. That’s why my tummy has shrunk!” My mouth hung with astonishment. What does “Popped” mean? Did she deliver my pups? If so, where were they, and why was she heading to the hospital?“Popped means gave birth. The day you were captured, I delivered the twins. Today I saw my gynecologist, Dr. Sylvia, who helped me give birth. It was a routine check-up.” My heart skipped a beat and I couldn’t help but say a silent prayer to the kind godde
Stavros’s POV“That’s sorted then. I’m sure you can sort the rest by yourselves. I’ll leave for home.” In my haste, I had completely forgotten about my father’s treasure and property.“Beta, can we discuss your father’s belongings, which are rightfully yours?” asked Delta Drupal.“Oh, yes. As I had mentioned earlier, I will give away everything to the pack members. You can use the treasure and the property for the welfare of the pack. Please prepare the legal documents and send them to me in Lucania for my signature.” I wanted the entire pack to know that my father’s precious possessions belonged to them. It wasn’t the Alpha’s personal property or wealth. I wouldn’t want anyone to take undue advantage of my father’s hard earned wealth.“Yes, Beta. I appreciate your kindness. Can we transform the mansion into our packhouse to shelter the members who are homeless?” asked Delta Drupal, eliciting cheers from the pack members. I knew I had made the right decision in choosing him as the Alp
Stavros’s POVZephyrus looked relieved to see me. “Stop the battle. They’ve released Beta Stavros,” he yelled, striding towards me. Even Alpha Alexios barked orders to stop the fight and step back.I gazed all around me at the beheaded, blood-smeared bodies lying all around the snow-covered terrain. The ground was transformed into a sea of blood, and my heart sank with despair. This wasn’t what I wanted for my father’s pack.“Beta Stavros, please save our pack. Only fifty of us are alive now,” pleaded Zeta Athlon, dropping to his knees in front of me in a sea of blood. The injury across his chest looked fatal, and nothing could save him now. They should have revolted against Beta Velez and released me earlier. It would have stopped the fight.“It’s your doing, Zeta. The fight has ceased and everyone can return home. We will leave your territory right now,” said Alpha Alexios.“Please stay the night. We want to discuss an important topic tomorrow once everyone is well-rested. It’s cruc
Stavros’s POVWith the sun up all day and night, keeping track of time within the room where I was locked was difficult. It was frustrating since I couldn’t escape with the tight security all around. The wind wolves were desperate to keep me here and could do anything to have their way. I didn’t fear for myself but for my family in Lucania.By now, I was sure their Zeta had reached Lucania to abduct Hazel. Had she given birth yet?I was restless as I paced the floor. There had to be a way to reach out to Hazel. I tried to mind-link with Hazel, but I was too far away to connect to her. Neither could I connect with Zephyrus this time, although we shared a good rapport with one another. Were the wind wolves blocking me out? With their unknown powers, there was a possibility that they were preventing me from reaching out for help. Did they possess psychic powers? After the cleansing ritual, I had completely severed all ties with Dyson. So even if I tried, I couldn’t connect with him.Ther
Hazel’s POVI opened my eyes to look around me. Yes, I was still alone at the hospital waiting to be discharged. I lost my senses after hearing the news of my mate’s capture. It devastated me, totally catching me unawares. I had expected Stavros to be injured, but never captured and taken away to some unknown enemy territory.I closed my eyes, unable to imagine what he was going through there. How could Zeph allow this to happen? Wasn’t it his duty to protect his Beta? Shouldn’t he rescue Stavros? I needed my phone to get some answers from Zephyrus. Somehow, I felt let down. All his life, Stavros had unconditionally stood by Zeph and now, when he was in the enemy territory, how could the pack members sit back and relax?I eased off the hospital bed to find out what was going on. I was supposed to get discharged today and planned to follow up with my doctor, but first, I needed to check up on the twins.Walking down to the nursery, I could feel the sympathetic glances thrown my way. Ob
Stavros’s POVThe car sped along the highway that took me through the boreal forest, high Alpine, and rolling tundra until we reached a desolate village. I knew the place since I had come here before. It was the Wild Wain Village, the territory of the Wind Wolves. The place was cold, desolate, and uninhabitable, submerged in darkness because the clouds hanging low completely blocked the pale rays of the Midnight sun.Beta Velez drove on with a grim look on his face while I watched for road signs to guide me back. There was no way I would live here. After meeting their Alpha and knowing their motive, I would surely escape. I wanted to ask so many things but the gag prevented me from speaking.“Mmm!” I struggled to get it off and Beta Velez stopped the car and untied my mouth at last. I sputtered, gasping for air. My mouth felt parched but with my hands still tied up, I doubted I would get water to drink.“Why have you brought me here? I want to meet your Alpha.” He drove on in silence,
Hazel’s POVI tossed and turned all afternoon; the pain escalating every minute. After Stavros’s call, I fell asleep from exhaustion. He still hadn’t returned when I woke up, and neither did the others. Now the dull throbbing ache in my cervix turned excruciating, and I gritted my teeth to bear it.The door opened, and Aunt Carla entered my room. “Hazel, we can’t delay this anymore. We have to take you to the hospital. Your contractions have started.”I gave her a frantic look. I couldn’t deliver without Stavros! He promised he would be there with me all along. “Please call Stavros, Aunt Carla. I can’t do this alone.” Tears pooled in my eyes and streamed down my cheeks while she gave me a hesitant look.“Stavros and the others are very busy at the borders. The enemy has attacked us and they cannot return. You have us with you, Hazel. Don’t delay this. You’re risking your life and also that of your pups.” I sighed and nodded, agreeing with their wishes.“Fine, I’ll go to the hospital.”
Stavros’s POVHazel’s call disturbed me a lot as I waited for some update on the attackers. True to his promise, Orion called after forty minutes with a shocking update. I wondered how he located the enemy so fast. It only meant one thing. They hadn’t left but were lurking nearby instead.“Yes, Orion. Have you located the enemy?”“Yes, Stav. They’ve taken shelter at the foothills of Mount Richardson. I’m keeping a watch on their activities and it doesn’t look hopeful. I think they’re heading over to launch an attack on us again.”My jaws dropped with horror. I had no idea the enemy was so close. “Do you have any idea who they are and what they want?”“No, Stav, but they aren’t normal shifters like us. Their speed is the fastest I’ve ever seen. I can’t get near as they can sense anything nearby. They’ve killed two rogues trespassing nearby and five bears already.” I frowned at his description.“How do they look? Do they possess any typical physical traits?” Orion considered my question
