Chapter Eleven

Brielle; I couldn’t take it anymore. The nightmares were tearing me apart, and the flashbacks during the day left me constantly on edge. That night was the first time that my nightmares had featured Zane. Zane tried his best to be there for me, although I hadn’t told him anything save for the fact that I had nightmares, but I needed something more. Someone who understood my fear. That was why in spite of our complicated relationship, I found myself running to Lucien. Somehow, I felt he might understand better. I found Lucien in his study, buried in his work as usual. His eyes met mine, and I saw that he looked concerned for a split second. “Brielle, how may I help you?” He asked, standing up. I hesitated, feeling a bit stupid. “I need your help, Lucien. I’ve been having nightmares, and they’re getting worse. I don’t know what to do.” His expression softened a bit. “Of course, I’ll help you. Tell me everything.” I told him about the nightmares, the hallucinations, an

Chapter Twelve

Brielle; The old woman made us to step out of the room for tea while she excused herself to go back into the room. Lucien and I drank the tea in silence and my mind was on how complicated the situation was. Lucien looked out of the window like there was something important waiting for him out there. “Alright, you may come back in now, so we can begin the ritual.” The priestess said, walking away. When we got back, the curtains had been drawn, and the room was dimly lit by candles, casting flickering shadows on the walls. The air was thick with the scent of herbs and incense, like she was burning more than what I could initially smell. I sat nervously, watching the priestess as she prepared the summoning ritual to bring forth the spirit that was making me fearful and restless. Lucien stood beside me, his expression tense. It was like neither of us knew what to expect. The priestess placed a bowl filled with strange powders and herbs in the center of the room and held a bowl wit

Chapter Thirteen

Brielle's POV. Lucien and I returned to our regular lives, acting as though nothing important had happened. It was easier said than done, especially with the fact that the secret mission was not something to be taken lightly, and I, for one, had decided to keep Zane in the dark about everything. "Where have you been?" Zane asked when we finally saw him later that evening. He looked worried. "Oh, just running some errands." I said, trying to sound casual. "You know how it is. I had to take a walk." Lucien was right behind me. "How are you?" Lucien asked, completely disregarding the question, just like he had the tendency to do on a normal day. Zane looked at us both with suspicion in his eyes, but he didn't press the matter further. "Alright. Just glad you're back." The thrill of our secret mission and the deception added a layer of excitement to our daily interactions, Lucien and I. Lucien and I would exchange glances whenever we saw each other, all while trying t

Chapter Fourteen

Brielle. Despite my better judgment, I found myself unable to resist the magnetic pull between Lucien and me. It was like an invisible force drawing me to him, even though I knew it was wrong. The tension between us had become unbearable, and I knew something had to give. One evening, I went to Lucien’s office to return a file. The door was slightly ajar, and I could see him inside, sitting at his desk with a bottle of whiskey in front of him. He looked lost in thought, and it was rare to see that, considering the fact that his face was always unusually stoic. I hesitated for a moment before knocking softly on the door. “Lucien?” I said, stepping inside. He looked up, his eyes meeting mine. There was something in his eyes, the way he looked at me, that made my heart skip a beat. “Brielle.” He said. “Come in.” I closed the door behind me and walked over to his desk, placing the file down. “I brought this back. It’s the report you asked for.” “Thank you.” He said, but h

Chapter Fifteen

Brielle. I focused on my duties and my relationship with Zane. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t shake the feeling of guilt that stayed in the back of my mind. I knew something was wrong, but I didn’t want to face it. One morning, as I was getting dressed, I felt a wave of nausea wash over me. I rushed to the bathroom, barely making it to the toilet before I started to throw up. Panic set in as the realization hit me like a ton of bricks. “No, it can’t be...” I whispered to myself. I took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart. I needed to be sure. I needed to get proof. Later that day, I made an excuse to go into town and bought a pregnancy test. The wait for the results felt like an eternity to me. When the second line appeared, confirming my worst fear, my heart sank. “I’m pregnant? I’m pregnant.” I muttered, my hands shaking. The timing confirmed it. I had been sleeping with him for so long, and this was the result. The baby was Lucien’s, not Zane’s.

Chapter Sixteen

Lucien’s POV. “And even if we deploy our men to the side, there are other parts that the others can come in through. We have to take immediate action. What do you suggest, alpha?” Elder Tim said as he turned to me, his face serious. What could Brielle be hiding from me? What was going on that would make her be so secretive? “Alpha Lucien, are you here?” Another elder asked and I snapped out of it. I forgot that I was yet to answer. “We just have to work on blocking all the passage ways that have not been authorised.” I said. “But they may serve as places to visit as the years go by. It would be good for preserving our culture.” Another elder said. “I’m sure that our safety is better than any place to visit, and that our culture is not based on unnecessary entry ways to the pack, don’t you think?” I asked. The things people said without realising how foolish they seemed. Brielle could be going through problems right now, and she did not want to let me know about them

Chapter Seventeen

Lucien’s POV. There was nothing I could do to make Brielle trust me, apparently. After everything we had gone through, she had the mind to do this to me. I was angry, but I felt terrible about everything. I didn’t look back at Zane as I walked away, because in a way, my anger was extended to him. If he didn’t take my woman away from me, then we would not have been going through all of this. I shook my head. No, that wasn’t right. Even before she and Zane got together, we were not exactly the chummiest of buddies, and I was always too busy to make out time for her when I should have. All this was on me! I wondered if she shared her problems with Zane. If she had deemed him worthy of being her supporter, and left me behind. But if that was so, why didn’t she just stick to him for everything? Why did she come to me for her sexual needs? Was Zane that terrible in— A shudder passed through me, I didn’t want to think about my brother in such a manner. My main focus was supposed to be

Chapter Eighteen

Brielle’s POV I paced back and forth in our living room, my heart pounding like a drum. This secret that I was carrying was suffocating me, and I couldn’t keep it to myself any longer. Zane needed to know, but how could I possibly tell him? Taking a deep breath, I called out. “Zane, we need to talk.” He got out from the kitchen, a worried look already etched on his face. “Baby, what’s wrong? You look pale. Is it the baby?” Then he widened his eyes. “Oh wait, is it me?” The concern in his voice pierced my heart, making the guilt swell more inside me. He was so caring, so devoted. How could I keep this from him? But I had to. For now, at least. “Zane, it’s not just about the pregnancy.” I said, my voice trembling. “There’s more to it.” He stepped closer, his eyes searching mine. “Whatever it is, Brielle, we’ll get through it together. Don’t worry. I’m here for you.” His words, meant to comfort me, only made the guilt more unbearable. Tears welled up in my eyes

Chapter Nineteen

Brielle's POV I felt my foot slip and the ground give way beneath me. My heart seized in my chest, and my scream could not stay trapped in my throat as I began to fall. I was panicking, and the thought that this was it— I was going to lose my baby because of my reckless, desperate initial decision, held me by the neck. If I survived the floor, my conscience would never let me live. But just as I felt myself pitch forward, a strong hand grabbed my arm, yanking me back from the edge. Right after I had already seen my life flash before my eyes. I stumbled forward, crashing into the solid wall of a chest. My vision swam, heart hammering in my ears. I looked up to see Damien, one of the pack members, and he looked extremely concerned. That was close. Too close. “Brielle! Are you alright?” He asked, his voice a bit shaky. I nodded, trying to catch my breath. “I... I think so. You saved me. Thank you.” He released my arm gently but kept another hand on my shoulder to steady

Chapter Twenty

Brielle’s POV. I woke up first, the events of what happened rushing back into my mind with a rush of emotions. I lay there for a moment, feeling Lucien's warmth beside me, but reality quickly set in. I gently tapped his shoulder, trying to shake him awake without making too much noise. “Lucien!” I whispered, my voice sharp. “You need to leave. Now!” He stirred, blinking his eyes open. “What? Why?” He muttered, trying to wrap his arm around me for a cuddle. I pushed him away, sitting up and wrapping the sheet around me. “Lucien, we’re at Zane’s. You can’t stay here, obviously.” His expression changed from confusion to understanding. He nodded slowly, sitting up and running a hand through his hair. “Right. I’ll go.” I got up and started gathering the sheets, determined to get them into the washing machine before Zane came back. Lucien stood and began dressing, helping me with the sheets. As we worked quickly, the silence between us was still heavy, filled with a lot
