Chapter 61

Rayne's POV“I don't understand why I need a babysitter,” I said, crossing my arms. Kaiden simply walked to the other side of his room and downed the rest of his wine. The liquid stained his lips red, giving them an oddly sensual look. His eyes were hooded, tired even, and held little emotion in them. When he had called me over to his room, I had accepted greedily, thinking that he wanted to say something akin to the thoughts I had been nursing, but the moment I stepped into his room and saw the look in his eyes, all hope seeped out of me like bleached ink. I didn't want to look ungrateful, but with the things I was already up to, the last thing I needed was someone following me up and down. If he couldn't trust me to be able to take care of myself, then I didn't want anyone trailing my shadow.“I'm doing this for you, Rayne. Whether you like it or not. Things are getting very bad. Look at what happened to Bradford. The released rogue. Even think back to Sal's kidnapping. I have to

Chapter 62

Rayne's POVI went to check up on Bradford afterwards, drawn there by a deep sense of duty and guilt. He had barely gotten to enjoy the return of his mate, and now another tragedy had struck. On the hospital bed, he looked too still, too quiet. His chest barely even rose or fell, and the bandage around it had turned slightly yellow from the discharge of his wound. From his side, sunken in a chair, Sal's voice reached me. It sounded like it had been weighed down by her sadness and worry. It hung in the air, tired and devoid of warmth. It made me think about Kaiden, and how he must have felt. Their eyes had shared the same look. Empty, but struggling to hold on to light.“How's he doing?” I asked, even if I could tell that there was no significant change from the look of still form.Sal’s shoulders made a depressing imitation of what a shrug should have been. “Stable, I guess. Doc’s put him in a clinically induced coma in hopes that it'll help him heal faster. He's barely breathing no

Chapter 63

Rayne's POVNot wanting to continue watching a moment that I probably wasn't supposed to witness, I quietly left the garden after that. I had seen enough. As I bounded down the hall towards the dungeon, someone came walking out of a corner, giving me little time to even move out of the way. I barely dodged, and as I twisted out of the way I grabbed on to the nearest item I believed would keep me on my feet.It was him again.I let go of his shirt like it was a hot potato. “What are you doing here?” He looked down at me, unsmiling. “I should be asking you the same thing.”“I'm not a prisoner here.”“Still doesn't answer the question.”I crossed my arms. “Excuse you, but you have no right to ask me such questions. You're not the one hosting me here.”“But I have been tasked with looking after you, as well as the role of a First Beta.”First Betas were, as the name implied, Betas that answered directly to the Alpha. That was Bradford's role previously, but obviously since he was hospita

Chapter 64

Rayne's POVFor a very long time, the only thing I knew about myself was the fact that I was destined to be a Luna, even though I was the offspring of Omegas. To many, it was a great honor, but to me, it became a burden. I never got to meet or see the Priestess that started the prophecy, but many said that she had gone insane shortly before she died, but was powerful enough for her words to hold credibility. That was why her words haunted me for so long, even after her supposed death. Right from the cradle, my destiny had been determined.Once, I believed in it, but was a prophecy meant to bring a person so much suffering? For three years of supposedly walking in line with it, and all I saw was how brutal people could be with their words and actions. My life nearly got snatched away because of it.What could Victor possibly have known about me? Curiosity nibbled at me for days. While I went about trying to find clues, or was focusing on ignoring Kaiden, or just simply went about my

Chapter 65

Sal’s POVI ran the wet cloth over his skin, taking my precious time to ensure that the surface was clean. Seeing him in this sick bed reminded me of how taking care of my paralyzed father used to be before he succumbed to the weakness of his body. After I finished cleaning him up, I kissed him on the forehead, packed up my things, and left.“I'll be back soon,” I whispered to him at the doorway, hoping that even if the chances were slim, he could hear me.Later, my mind moved over the things I had managed to gather up since Rayne and I started looking for clues as to who released the rogue that night. I'd been to the dungeons numerous times, but found nothing significant except for the ugly stain on the concrete floor where Bradford had bled.To further prove that the rogue had been indeed released and simply didn't break out on his own, the cell he had been in had no signs of struggle. No claw marks or broken floors. It was like one moment he was inside, and the next he wasn't.I al

Chapter 66

Kaiden's POVGetting good sleep became difficult. Eating as well. Migraines plagued my every waking moment. From the moment I opened my eyes, to the moment I crawled back into bed as an exhausted man.I missed having Rayne's warmth beside me. I really did, but maybe staying away from her was the best. I didn't want her to start thinking I was trying to force her into being with me again.I had been making a personal investigation concerning Bradford's attack on my own, because I couldn't seem to have anyone else I could trust wholly as I did Bradford. The only person I could talk to right now was Savannah, and there was only so much that she could do.Drawn out of bed by the great urge to relieve myself, I rolled out of bed and stumbled into the toilet. After completing my business, I went over to the sink to wash my hands. I focused on the cool water hitting my skin to rinse off the soap I used, and raised my head to the mirror in front of me.For a little while, I didn't seem to re

Chapter 67

Rayne's POVMoving around at night like someone with something to hide didn't sit right with me, but I wanted answers, and I would do what I could to get them.Victor had indeed piqued my curiosity by speaking about the prophecy, but to an extent, it wasn't private information. If everyone in Oceanpearl was aware of it, then it wasn't enough proof for me to simply believe his words. He had asked us to meet tonight for him to “reveal all” as he had so put it, and who was I to deny the man audience? I would listen to what he had to say one last time, and then I would give him a piece of my mind as well.I slipped through the halls with practiced ease. It was funny how a few months back I didn't even know the end of one hall to the other, and often ended up in the wrong places. The place had grown on me, one way or the other, and I had started to see it as a home. This didn't mean that I had cast off Oceanpearl entirely, as I still had some ties to it. After all, I had been born there, s

Chapter 68

Rayne's POVI had promised myself that no one would ever consider me helpless ever again.I didn't even let his lips fully settle before I pressed both hands on his chest and pushed him away with a loud roar. “Get away from me!”Victor's back slammed into the other wall. He stayed there for a little moment, watching me with flashing gold eyes. Eerily, almost like a puppet, he regained his composure. “Did you know that not very long ago, it was common practice to share mates?” He made a false lunge at me, and I stumbled back, nearly missing my footing. He laughed, and the sound grated against my ears uncomfortably. “I'm sure Kaiden wouldn't mind me having a little taste of his latest pet.”“You're sick, and I'll make sure he finds out about that,” I said, already backing up the stairs I came through. I didn't want to take my eyes off him in case he tried something, but I didn't have eyes at the back of my head, so progress was slow.Unfortunately, I didn't have anything on me that I

Chapter 69

Kaiden's POVI felt like I had swallowed a hot, burning coal, and it had sunk deep into my body cavity, burning me on the inside. Watching Rayne leave the room became one of the hardest things I had ever done, and I didn't want to do it. The problem lies within me. I couldn't understand what I had seen after I followed her into that place. Images warred in my mind, pulling me from one resolve to another. The moment Victor kissed her, I had left, because I didn't want to watch any more, but . . . I think I had heard something else. The problem was remembering what I heard, and if I even heard anything at all.Savannah pulled me down to her again, and I obeyed, resting once again on her thighs, and letting her run her fingers through my hair. She parted the middle section of my hair, her breath soft against my cheek. “Don't worry about them, Kaiden. You're too hard working to take on all these struggles yourself. You need assistance.”

Chapter 70

Rayne's POVThe next day came in a blur, and before I knew it I was in my room, getting dressed and trying not to think too hard about Kaiden and Savannah and Victor and all the things that appeared to be going wrong in the world at the time.I combed my hair and put on a little oil on my lips, testing out the consistency by pressing my lips together. Satisfied with how I looked, I left the mirror and went back to my bed. I picked up my phone and started randomly scrolling through it. Out of necessity I had set it up a while back, but I seldom had much use for it these days with everything that had been happening.I decided to check out the Paranormal Watch to see the top news concerning werewolves. After a little while of scrolling through the headlines, one thing stood out to me: more and more sightings and run-ins of normal wolves with rogues. They were becoming bolder and unpredictable with their attacks, and it wasn't just in
