Prologue

Zara Howard It all happened so quickly, anyone could barely process how our living room turned into a gangster scene from a movie. A drunkard gambler who borrowed too much money from the Mafia and had nothing to offer except for empty promises when it was pay up time. Only difference was this time the drunkard was my stepfather, Chad Hudson and the Mafia was Asher Lancaster, the powerful mob boss, who brought with him 6-7 terrifying armed men. My mother was tightly gripping onto my arm as she tried to drag me and my older sister, Scarlett farther away from them. My eyes, however, were fixated on the scene unfolding right in front of me. My stepfather on his knees begging for more time, claiming that he would definitely pay up the next time, even though we all knew that even if he worked his ass off for a lifetime, he wouldn’t be able pay off his debt. Asher had made himself comfortable on one of the chairs. He was wearing a white button-up shirt, making faint outlines of his

Chapter One

Ten years later Zara Howard Walking back home after work is something I always look forward to. In those 20 minutes I felt the most in my element. Daydreaming with a pinch of overthinking? Yes please. As I plugged in my headphones, my mind wandered to how my life has played out in the last few years. It's been ten years since Asher Lancaster left our house after shooting my stepfather. My mother was deranged, barely able to maintain her sanity while Scarlett and I tried our best to calm her down. I still remember shuffling in my bed that night, hearing sniffles of my mother and sister as I wondered how the hell was our family going to survive considering I was barely 18 and Scarlett was 20 back then. No matter how shitty our stepfather had been to us, he could at least put bread on the table twice a day. I remember the very next morning, a mysterious envelope in our mailbox. It had a couple hundred dollars but that's about it. There was nothing else with it. It didn’t say who it

Chapter Two

Zara Howard I iced my bruise as we sat in my room, wondering what we could possibly do about this situation. I am convinced our living room has a mafia spell. It is getting out of hand now. Why else would these gangsters keep barging into our living room demanding stuff? "We really need to do something about this situation. I'm scared to even step out of the house. I know for sure Victor show up at the restaurant and won't even bat an eye before kidnapping me. Oh god! The idea of being alone with Victor makes me so sick." Scarlett was clearly having a panic attack. I can't even blame her because Victor was pretty serious about taking matters in his own hands. "We need someone who can scare Victor." Scarlett said. Asher Lancaster. "Someone who is more powerful than Victor." She added Asher Lancaster. "But at the same time, someone we can trust and doesn’t end up hurting us." "Asher Lancaster." I said it aloud this time. "Zara, no please what?" I could see the 'you can't be se

Chapter Three

Zara Howard I think the Fish is my spirit animal. All I've done in the last few minutes is stare at Asher like a fish and anytime I've tried to say something, my mouth opens and closes like a fish. We're sitting in one of his cabins. He's seated at his table while we sat just a few feet away from him on the sofa. I prefer the considerable amount of distance between us because I have a feeling I would combust if I get any closer to this man. "So, Miss Howard, what brings you here?" Asher asked, his eyes glancing between me and Scarlett, not knowing which one of us is going to do the talking. I try to mentally send a message to Scarlett begging her to do the talking because clearly by the looks of it I've done enough talking. "Uh we are troubled by this local gangster, Victor Lawford-" Scarlett begins explaining the situation and my faith in my superpowers is reinstated. Of course I was able to send her mind to mind messages. Okay wow nervousness isn't a pretty look on me. I need

Chapter Four

Zara HowardScarlett and I headed back to work after our 'meeting' with Asher Lancaster. A 'meeting' I am definitely NOT going to micro-analyze and daydream about for the rest of the day. I decided to grab some coffee before heading to my desk. I liked my workplace and also the kind of work I did. The Lancaster Enterprises were very no-bullshit with the work they did, which made my job as an assistant very convenient. Ensuring meetings are coordinated, receiving-transferring calls and emails wasn't much work at all. I logged into my laptop as I sipped on my coffee. I am going to dive into work and not let Asher take up even a fraction of my thoughts. And just then, I was notified with a new email. Ha! This is a sign that Asher Lancaster has nothing on me. It is only a matter of time before I am flooded with work that I will barely have any time to even breathe, forget daydreaming.Asher Lancaster who?I quickly open the email to find elaborate details of the annual meeting of The La

Chapter Five

Zara HowardUpdates had become a daily thing. Wrapping up work, dropping by the Lancaster penthouse and heading back home was the new routine. A few things were a little different though. Asher wouldn't come down rushing in his half-naked glory. Instead, he would take his own sweet time walking down the stairs with an unamused look plastered on his face. Also, the security guard, Andrew was always super nice to me. He would greet me before informing Asher that I am there to give the update. And well, Mrs Costanza was… herself. She has been the caretaker of this house for more than twenty years now, which means she had seen Asher and his older brother, Axel Lancaster as toddlers. She is the complete no-nonsense plus dry humour package. Which I am guessing is the primary bonding point for Asher and Mrs Costanza.Asher even has a running joke that Mrs Costanza should be the one running the whole mafia business. It is so believable that no one would even dare to question that badass woma

Chapter Six

Zara Howard "And then he called me Miss Zara. I can't believe he said my name." I sighed as I filled in my best friend, Xena Remington with everything that had happened in my rollercoaster life throughout the past week.Xena is the HR representative for the Lancaster Enterprises. She was too caught up with court meetings concerning Asher's older brother, Axel Lancaster, who, by the way, she seems to fancy but refuses to acknowledge it."If you were a cartoon, you would most certainly have heart eyes right now" Xena mocked me, making me roll my eyes in weak defence.Since last night, it seems like my mind is glitching and replaying my name in Asher's voice on repeat. His gruff voice laced with the slightest glimpse of concern when he called me Miss Zara. Kill me. Kill me now."But I don't know how I feel about your obsession with Mister Asher Lancaster, Zara. He seems alright but that doesn't change the fact that he has killed a lot of people, including your stepfather and he doesn'

Chapter Seven

Zara Howard I meekly knocked on the mahogany door and heard Asher's faint voice asking me to come in. I walked in to see Asher, working on his laptop. He was still in his formals. His hair was messy, probably from running his fingers through them too much. He rubbed his forehead as he remained focused on the screen. Oh my my! Focused, busy at work Asher Lancaster is most certainly a delight to the eyes. My eyes travelled further south to find the first few buttons of his dark grey shirt unbuttoned. Things I would do just to run my fingertips across his chest and trace those inked lines. His hard muscles flexing as my fingers daintily trace his skin. As much as I want to gawk at him all day, I can’t forget that he is right in front of me. I cleared my throat, making him look up at me. I notice a glimpse of surprise on his face as he raised his eyebrow, silently asking me why I am in his bedroom. "Uhhm-Mrs. Costanza asked me to find you here." I managed to stutter. I really hope

Chapter Eight

Zara Howard"Ouch, that one actually hurt." I winced as Xena smacked me on my head for the third time in a row. "I am glad it did because someone needs to knock some sense in this stupid head of yours." She yelled as she proceeded to smack me yet again. "Heyyyyy!" I whined, not having a better protest. I really don't know what to say to her at this point. After telling her everything that happened with Asher last night, it seems like her fuse went off. "Zara, just because Asher is having fun by joining in on this little game you are trying to play with him, does not mean it is safe to do all this. What were you thinking going into his bedroom?" Xena scolded. She is pulling a real Scarlett move right now. "Mrs. Costanza said I could-" I tried to defend my actions but was quickly cut off. "The caretaker who practically raised that mafia household? Really? I refuse to believe someone can be this dumb." She gave me that 'you are impossible' look as she shook her head in disappointm

Chapter Nine

Zara HowardWe reached the fancy banquet hall of Hotel Hilton, a five-star hotel that was booked specifically for the party tonight. I changed into a black off-shoulder dress, made with a soft satin material that flattered my curves at all the right places. The dress also had a sexy yet classy slit on the side that showed off my legs.Just a few minutes into the party, Xena got busy with the little game she is trying to play with Jerold so that she can put him in place. As much as I approved of her plan, it meant I was going to be left all alone, unsupervised at this party. That also meant I am left with a lot of room to give in to my impulses and probably do a pathetic job of ignoring Asher. Girl Power, Zara. You are a strong, independent, smart woman. You don't need anyone to help you ignore Asher. Asher Lancaster has got nothing on you. Okay, fine, maybe a little bit but that doesn't mean anything. While I was too busy pep-talking myself, I felt a tap on my shoulder. Oh no.
