A state of war

FELIXAs soon as I established my authority in the pack, I could finally force Alpha Val to bring his warriors to Scarletville. Nevertheless, even including the wolves from the Crescent Valley Pack, my army wasn't grand. All I had were numbers while all I needed were strong fighters. For now, my so-called army numbered nearly two hundred wolves, but most of them were too weak. They all needed training, and I had no time to train them. If it weren't for Nova and a strong threat that our borders could be attacked, I would have waited and prepared those men better. It would have been wiser to do so, and a wise leader wouldn't lead his people to die. But I guess the first decisions I made as an Alpha were meant to be foolish ones…"Have you seen Eric?" I asked Holden when he entered my office. I hadn't seen my dear half-brother in a while, or rather from the day I had become an Alpha.Holden stopped for a moment to think before he shook his head. "I don't think I've seen him in two days.

Training

NOVAI stood a few feet away from Asriel. We were in a spacious hall that he called his private training room. The room had a round set of mattresses that covered most of the floor and a variety of weapons on the stands placed by every wall. I wondered why someone as powerful as Asriel needed to wield any kind of weapon. I bet that his magic could easily neutralize most of his enemies, and his lycan claws and teeth would seal their fate. He didn't need a sword, a bow, or a gun for that. I asked him about it, and he answered that he had to be prepared for any circumstances. I knew that it was possible to block someone's magic, but could anyone block a beast spirit? I doubted it. Yet, his cautiousness meant that he believed that there could always be someone stronger than him, and I found that lack of arrogance admirable."Focus, Nova." His firm tone reminded me that we were in the middle of my training. Asriel taught me a new kind of spells. I had never known that magic could be used l

My fight

NOVAI spent a few more hours practicing the spells that Asriel had taught me. I was practicing alone while he met with his warriors, making plans for the upcoming battle. Asriel explained that it was the rebels who were behind the kidnapping of the witches in Scarletville. I was on their list as well. The rebels had been capturing witches for months. They were forcing them to side with them and killing those who either turned out to be too weak or resisted. That was another reason why I needed to master those spells. I had to know how to use my magic to attack.Fortunately, I was getting better at this... and I didn't need Asriel's special touch for my spells to work. According to Asriel, magic was a form of art, and witches and warlocks were creators, able to give their magic a form using the power of their minds. I tried it, filling my luminous orb with different colors, and I think I was making progress. Although, I was quite certain that my rainbow-glowing orb would have been com

By his side

NOVAFortunately for me, Maren didn't have a lot of fans among the lycans, nor did she have any among witches. I almost felt sorry for her… for a brief moment, but I had to admit that winning against her was liberating. I had crossed a boundary I had never thought I'd cross. I had tasted the magic that was neither white nor black, and I felt surprisingly good about it. Perhaps the fact that I could almost kill and then heal someone on the verge of dying should have frightened me. It could be addictive. It could push me farther. It could make me cross another line, and another after that. Yet, I was calm. I embraced my new abilities with a smile and confidence. The meeting at the audience hall ended along with my win against Maren. The majority of people stood in a long line to congratulate me before leaving the room. It felt odd. Those people told me that I was their warrior, and they believed that I could bring them peace. And somewhere, in between nodding, thanking, and smiling back

Fire

NOVAThis was madness. Asriel and I stood just a few feet away from a pile of dead bodies… kissing. The lush strokes of his tongue clouded any shred of reason within me. I just wanted to lose myself in the sensation of his kiss, lose myself in pleasure. Yet the awareness of our surroundings hit me sooner than I had hoped. I placed my palms on his chest and used all of my strength to push him away. "I think we should stop," I murmured, breaking our kiss. His breathy chuckle sent another shiver down my lady parts. "Are you worried that those corpses might not like us kissing in their presence?"I arched my brow at him. "Actually, it's their presence that I find bothersome.""I've already called the cleaning team. They should get rid of them in an hour," he said."Get rid of the bodies... how?" I asked, giving him a nervous stare.Asriel shrugged. "They will burn what's left of them and cover the blood stains on the ground."My nervousness turned into confusion. "This might be a dumb que

Entering the battlefield

FELIXSix hours earlierI had never been good at pretending, but now I was forced to. How could I act as if nothing had happened? How long could I keep my identity secret? I was a lycan—not an Alpha wolf, but a fucking lycan! On the other side, I wasn't even sure how that was possible. My mother was a beta wolf, and unless Rainier wasn't at least a half-lycan, the fact that Eligor was my beast spirit should be considered a miracle.Along with acknowledging my unexpected identity, I noticed changes within me. As soon as Eligor had fully awakened, I realized that he clearly didn't like wolves, and he poured his anger and suspiciousness into me. He barely tolerated those whom I trusted, such as Zane, Logan, or Holden, but as soon as I briefly passed by Rainier, he filled me with an irresistible urge to tear him apart. I probably should have found a quiet place to talk with the lycan inside me, but I had little time for self-improvement. Not to mention that I literally felt like an enemy

Between us Lycans

FELIXI stayed in hiding, observing the black-haired man heading toward the rocky hill. I followed him, trying to stay unnoticed. This man had answers to my questions, and—most importantly—he might have known where Nova was.He ran through the hill, heading, most likely, to the other side of the hideout. He seemed anxious. Was this Theresa that the other lycan had mentioned a lover of his?The black-haired lycan sniffed the air around him and growled. Then he started to run faster, jumping through the steep path. I leaped forward and hid in the shade formed by the pile of stones. I could still follow him, but passing this terrain without being seen was becoming harder by the second.I looked around and was surprised to see no warriors—no one guarding this place properly. That made me recall the scene I saw by the steel door. They were evacuating... That made me wonder what had happened there. Were they attacked by someone? But if it weren't for my people, then who would attack them? R

Captor

NOVAI opened my eyes, and the blinding light assaulted my senses. A headache came a second later. Once my sight adjusted, I started to become slightly more aware of my surroundings. I was lying in a bed, in an unfamiliar bedroom. The bright light was coming from the wall-sized enforced window with steel bars behind it. I was wearing a thin, nearly see-through nightgown, and I was naked underneath. I had something on my neck—a metal collar with signs engraved on it, which I felt underneath my fingertips. Thick steel bracelets were locked around my wrists. Those too had symbols, and it wasn't hard to guess what their purpose was; someone put them on me to restrain my magic. But, as I tried to sit on the bed and found myself barely able to do so, I started to suspect that my new, uncomfortable jewelry was also meant to weaken my body.A moment later, the door of the chamber opened, and a few men walked in. I instinctively covered myself with sheets. They laughed. One of the men pushed f

Helpless

NOVAEric left my chamber a moment later as one of the guards informed him about something urgent. Generously, he told me that someone would bring me food in a while. He also warned me not to try to escape, as if my current state allowed me to think of running away.I tried to process his words, and I was becoming more and more aware that he hadn't told me at least half of the things he was planning. A few hints slipped from what he said, though. He said that he had been injecting himself with lycan plasma and that it had made him stronger, but everything he told me after that overshadowed the initial purpose of doing so… He wanted to accumulate the power that the core and jades could give him. Consuming those jades could make him stronger than any other alpha wolf. It could make him invincible. But having that kind of power certainly wasn't necessary to defeat Alpha Rainier or those who supported him...I exhaled sharply as I realized the obvious—the Crimson Mountain Pack would have

The truth

FELIXAsriel and I landed outside the range of mind link, and neither of us could connect our men. I wasn't eager to meet more lycans, but they might have known who kidnapped Nova. Asriel claimed that it must have been those who rebelled against him, but I suspected that the whole case was more complicated than that.Eligor forced me to temporarily acknowledge Asriel's leadership. I hated it, but I had to agree to it because I didn't have the slightest idea where we were. Asriel spent many years in the woods around Crimson Mountain, and I had to believe that he knew where we were going. It was the first time I was quite casually running through the forest in my lycan form. It felt different from when I was a wolf, but it was equally liberating. We moved up from the river, toward the rocky foot of Crimson Mountain. Suddenly, Asriel stopped and shifted back to his human form. I shifted as well."My father's old hideout is over there." He pointed at the stone wall in front of us. "I disc
