Encounter

By the time Becca came out of her room, where she had gone to change into more presentable clothes, Ryan had gone, which was a relief. She felt sort of bad that she had treated him the way she had, but she had had to do it, because she had once been a fool where he was concerned, and she was afraid that it would be all too easy to become that dumb woman again. She couldn’t let that happen. “Where are the girls?” She asked Sandra.“They went to dress up.”“Okay.”“Sandra, aren’t you coming with us?” Trevor asked.“No. As a matter of fact, I want Becca to stay too. There are some things that I want to talk with her about.”“Oh, alright then. I’ll just wait for the girls to finish dressing up and then we’ll be on our way and give you ladies some privacy.” Trevor said. In less than twenty minutes, he and the girls were out of the house.“He’s a very nice guy. He loves the girls and they love him just as much.” Sandra said, referring to Trevor.“Yes. I’m very lucky. Now, I understand what

Conviction

“My mom says that my dad is dead.” The kid said, looking appraisingly at Sam, his head tilted to one side as he considered this man who said that he was his dad. Sam silently damned his ex-wife to hell and back.“I know. I don’t blame her actually. I sort of hurt her, and that’s why she doesn’t want me around you and why she said that I was dead.” Sam explained. ‘Sort of’ was a gross understatement, but this dumb kid did not need to know that.“Why did you hurt her? It’s not nice to hurt people.”“Listen, kid. What did she say about me?” Sam asked, glancing around surreptitiously. He knew that Sandra wasn’t around because he had been hanging around when she and the kid were arguing and he had heard them loud and clear. Hell, the whole street had heard them. Then he had watched as she left the house alone. Still, he had no idea if she was going to come back soon. Her friend’s house was just down the street, after all. It was better he got this over and done with as fast as possible.“S

Deceit

Sweat beaded on Tracy’s face as she stared at her phone, her heart thundering in her chest. This could not be happening to her. Why on earth was this happening to her? She was a good person, and she did not deserve any of this at all. Okay, fine, she had made a mistake and was now lying to the man she loved, but she did not intend to saddle him with another man’s child. That did not mean that she deserved any of this. After all, she had plans to get rid of the pregnancy immediately after her wedding to Ryan and then start over on a clean slate with him. As she stood there, the phone began to ring in her hands.“Hello.” She whispered into it tensely, even though she was alone in the house, except for the staff. “Did you get my message?” Josh, her blackmailer’s voice came from over the phone. He sounded happy as hell, and who wouldn’t be, with the whooping sum of $20,000 that they hadn’t worked for sitting in their accounts, not to talk of a necklace that was even more in value than th

Wedding vows

It was finally D-day, that is, the day of Tracy’s wedding to Ryan. To say that she was a nervous wreck was an understatement. Right from when she had woken up this morning to prepare for the ceremony, she had not been herself. If anyone noticed, they didn’t say anything. Many of her friends from across the country had come to grace the occasion, as did some of Ryan’s friends, of which he did not have many. He dedicated his life to his daughters, work, and charities. One of his charities, which was one for orphans, had sent five of the children to represent them at the wedding. Ryan had been so glad to see the children and so touched by the gesture that Tracy found herself questioning what she was doing again. He was a nice man, and he did not deserve a lying, scheming bride, but it was too late, and she had come this far, so she might as well go through with it. “You look so beautiful, babes. You’re so lucky to be getting married to whom you’re getting married. What wouldn’t I give

Uninvited guests

Lots of people would agree that it was too early to be drunk as hell at ten in the morning, but Josh could not relate at all. He was so drunk that everything in his vision was blurred and wobbling, but he still kept plying himself with drink, and who wouldn’t? Life was so unfair, and he was feeling really sorry for himself. As always, when he felt sorry for himself as he did now, he plied himself with alcohol in a bid to numb the pain, but the pain of today was too great for booze to numb. After a while, he stopped drinking and took stock of his situation. He didn’t know if someone could die from drinking too much in one go, but he wasn’t about to find out. After all, when there is life, there is hope, and he still had life. Who would have thought that he, who had been quite rich yesterday, would be back to square one today? Certainly not him, not when he had been gambling away all the money that he had gotten from that Richie rich girl called Tracy. To worsen matters, he was even in

The truth comes out

There was silence in the whole church for some minutes while Tracy desperately wracked her head for a way out of this mess and utter embarrassment, but she could not think of any. The main thing she had to do now was to stop this man from blurting out anything incriminating.“I know you need more money and you will get it, but this is my wedding day, and you’re ruining it,” Tracy told him in a furious, yet scared whisper. The murmuring had started up once again, and a quick glance at Ryan showed that he was looking appraisingly at Josh, apparently wondering who he was and what he had to do with Tracy.“I don’t trust you. I need it now.” Josh said, feeling bolder when he realized that there was no way that she had confessed what she had done to her groom. Granted, the man did not look like he was the happiest of grooms, but Josh figured that he would look even more unhappy if he knew what his bride-to-be was doing.“Alright. Fine. Please excuse me for a few moments. I’ll be back immedi

Kidnap

“Well, well, well. This is the entertainment of the century. Don’t you think so? I don’t think I’ve ever been so entertained in my entire life.” Ben said laughingly amidst the chaos that was going on in the church after the drama that the drunk guy had caused and the groom’s subsequent exit.“Don’t lose focus now. Keep the kids in sight.” Sam replied a little irritatedly, sweating in the suit that he was wearing. It was a little too tight for him, and his big hands hung out of the sleeves a little too conspicuously than he would have liked, but he didn’t have the money to get a better one, not that it mattered. He wasn’t a friend to anyone here, so he didn’t have to look good to save face. Besides, in no distant time, he would have more than enough money to buy as many well-fitted suits as he wanted.“I know. Calm your titties, man. If you keep being this tense, you might mess everything up.”“Where are they? I can’t see them anywhere around.” Sam asked, referring to the three childre

Dead faint

Becca returned from the grocery store not up to an hour after she left, to meet her front door wide open. Immediately, alarm bells went off in her head as she suspected the worst. It was probably a burglary. By the time she got inside, however, everything was intact and in its place, so she relaxed a little. The kids had probably gone over to Dan’s place and left the door open, something that she had warned them against doing several times, but which they still always forgot to take heed to. Inside the house, she met Dan’s dog, who was all alone and whining.Despite her best efforts to silence him, he kept on whining. Becca set down the groceries that she had bought and headed over to Dan’s place, the dog following her. At Dan’s house, she met Clarissa, who informed her that the kids were not in the house with her.“What do you mean they’re not in the house? Where are they, then?” Becca queried in disbelief. She had been calling out the names of the kids, and if they were anywhere aro

Aftermath

Ryan stared unseeingly at the television, the air conditioner in the room turned on full blast. Contrary to what he was sure that everyone was thinking about him, he wasn’t licking his wounds in private. Well, maybe he was in a way, but definitely not in the way that they thought. He was extremely embarrassed, that was for sure. He had had to steer clear of the gossip channels when he saw what they were saying about him. He couldn’t blame them though. How on earth could he tell anyone that the reason he hadn’t been having sex with his former fiancée was that he felt an odd sense of loyalty to his ex-wife, who clearly did not give a flying fuck about him? As a matter of fact, he was somehow relieved at the way things had turned out with Tracy. He wasn’t even mad at her, after all, he had literally been starving her of sex. So, in a way, her cheating had been partially his fault, or at least he thought so. Still, he had seen a way out of the wedding that he didn’t want, and hell, he ha

Demands

As soon as Ryan left, Becca got some water from the refrigerator in his room and gulped it down thirstily. She was hungry, considering that she hadn’t eaten since morning, but she lacked appetite. Her head was pounding, and after raising her hand to it, she was not surprised to find a knot forming where she had hit it on the stool in her house. She winced and called for Margie to bring her some ibuprofen, which she swallowed with more water. Soon, her phone began to ring. She dived for it, hoping it was some news about the kids, but it was Sandra who was calling.“Hello, Sandra.”“Sorry, Becca. I was busy when you called. Did you find the kids yet?”“No, I didn’t. Ryan is on his way to the police station as we speak. I’m afraid, Becca. I think it is Sam who has them. You didn’t take him back, did you?”“Of course not! What do you take me for? An idiot? Why do you think that Sam has them?” Sandra asked in an offended tone. Quickly, Becca filled her in on what Mrs. Alice, her elderly nei
