I couldn't breathe properly while my mother-in-law's foot was pressed on my neck, and I couldn't help but let out a pained, choked sob.

Hearing how much I was in pain just seemed to fuel my mother-in-law even further.

"Police, she's the one who set that house on fire!" She screeched. "Get her away from here so my son can rest in peace!"

The police couldn't watch this go on any further, and he quickly pushed my mother-in-law aside, helping me get up from the ground. "Hello, Miss Carson, we have to bring you with us to be questioned at the police station."

"Yes, get her away!" My mother-in-law shouted, wanting nothing more than me to leave as soon as possible.

That's when I finally realized that my in-laws knew that Joey had faked his death, too. They were in on the sham the entire time, so there was no wonder why they were able to exploit and extort me so readily in my past life.
