Chapter 5

Marie grasped Clifford's hand with a pleading look. After a short silence, he muttered to the policeman, "Nothing's wrong."

Marie looked much relieved. My heart sank.

The policeman frowned at Clifford. "As an attorney, I'm sure you know the serious consequences of covering up for a criminal. If you confess to your actions now, we can fight for a lighter punishment."

Still, Clifford did not budge. "I said nothing was wrong. Please open an investigation if you don't believe me."

The evidence had been disposed of. Unless he and Marie turned themselves in, the police could not do anything about the case despite their doubts.

I was disappointed at his decision, but it was expected of him. Whether I was alive or dead, he would always pick Marie over me. I should have gotten used to it by now.

I flashed a wry smile as bitterness filled my chest.
