Marie tried to plead with Clifford, but he had no sympathy for her. "Meet me at the police department at 8:00 am tomorrow, or I'll get them to arrest you!"

As soon as he hung up on Marie, the life seemed to drain from his eyes. His gaze was vacant.

He checked his WhatsApp chat with me and repeatedly read the texts. He couldn't hold back his tears, and they fell on the screen. "I'm sorry, Holly. I had no idea. I was wrong, Holly!"

Clifford and I had been close and loving. He was my mentor when I interned at the same law firm as a junior-year student. Although he was a competent attorney, his sharp tongue made many interns cry. I gritted my teeth through my internship; as an orphan, I was used to harsh criticism. I cared more about learning on the job.

Clifford might be harsh, but he was protective of his mentees, always backing me up against difficult clients.

We didn't date for very long before we decided to get married, but the good days didn't last long.
