Milton’s frown deepened. The entire conversation was being recorded, and what made it worse was the expression she was giving him. She no longer looked at him with warmth, even though she had just signed the divorce agreement a few hours ago.
The people at the restaurant were now focused on Milton and Charlotte. A few recognized Milton, but they had no idea who Charlotte was.
“Who is she?” one person asked. “Isn’t that Milton Henderson?”
“I’ve always known he was married, but I had no idea I would get to see his wife on the day of their divorce.”
“He divorced her for his ex? Unbelievable.”
Seeing that everyone was speaking about him, Harper groaned. He was disgracing the family name yet again.
“Charlotte, come with me, and we will go to a private space and talk about this,” Milton bristled.
Charlotte frowned at him. “You still haven’t gotten it yet, Mr. Henderson. We have nothing to do with each other anymore.” She shoved her feelings aside and turned to her brothers. “Let’s get out of here. He already ruined my birthday; I can’t let him do any more damage.”
Her brothers nodded in agreement.
“Let’s go,” Luther jabbered, grinning widely at Milton.
“We could take you somewhere else,” Carl added.
“Where should we go next?” Earl asked, peering down at her.
“Should we have a yacht party?” Ralph inquired.
The men ignored Milton like he wasn’t even there, and that made Milton almost explode in anger. Charlotte had a bright smile on her face as she stared at her brothers, one she didn’t have when she looked at Milton.
“Lottie,” Harper called out, stepping closer to Charlotte, but Earl was quick to pull Charlotte back.
“We already told you none of the Hendersons are allowed to be near her,” Earl hissed. “Your brother has done enough to her, and I wouldn’t want you trying to convince her to go back.”
Harper frowned, then scowled at Earl. Unlike her brother, she tended to get angry quickly and react. “Who are you anyway? You should know that I never supported her marriage with my brother!”
The four Buchanan brothers frowned at her, thinking she was part of the people who had given Charlotte a hard time in the marriage.
“Who would want to get married to a loser like my brother anyway?” Harper seethed. “So, would you get out of the way and let me talk to her?”
The brothers’ eyes widened. That was the first time they had heard of a rich lady not taking the side of her brother.
“It is alright,” Charlotte said. “I want to talk to her since she is a friend of mine.”
“Are you sure about this?” the four men asked in unison.
She nodded, her gaze shifting to Milton. “Except for him, I am okay with speaking to the rest of the family.”
Earl moved out of the way, and Harper flung herself into Charlotte’s arms, wrapping her arm around her shoulder and grinning from ear to ear. Harper was five inches taller than Charlotte, and their height difference was visible.
“Yay, I love this divorce for you,” Harper chimed. “My brother is an idiot. Sometimes I wonder if we are related.”
“You say that all the time,” Charlotte purred.
“I guess I do. It is something I can’t help but say.”
Watching the girls go on and on, the brothers felt at ease seeing that there was someone she knew apart from them. However, they hated the fact that it was Milton’s younger sister.
On the other side of the table, Olivia’s fists tightened in anger, her knuckles turning white and pure resentment in her eyes when she saw the person she had been envious of was Charlotte.
She had thought she had finally taken all the good things from Charlotte, but now she looked better than she ever was.
“Aren’t you going to speak to your daughter-in-law?” Mr. Henderson asked, his gaze fixed on his wife.
Mrs. Henderson was looking at Olivia and saw the expression on her face. Slowly shaking her head, she glanced at her husband. “She is not my daughter-in-law anymore. There is no way I would be able to face her after my son cheated and brought home his mistress.”
“You are not going to try to get them back together?” Mr. Henderson asked.
She shook her head. “If you cheated and brought home your mistress, I would offer you the divorce papers myself, and you know I wouldn’t let you go without making you suffer.”
Mr. Henderson flinched. “Of course, that would never happen.”
“Good,” she replied. “Don’t think about bringing them together. Your useless son has finally lost the best thing I have given to him.” She rose to her feet. “From now on, he is your responsibility. I have only paid attention to his life because Charlotte was in it anyway. I just hope he can survive Charlotte’s wrath.”
Like mother, like daughter, Mrs. Henderson picked up her bag and proceeded to leave but stopped halfway. Grabbing a bottle of wine from the table, she poured all the contents on Olivia’s head.
The liquid filled her hair and slowly began dripping down her face and to her clothes, drenching her. Olivia’s eyes widened in surprise. She was lost in her thoughts and hadn’t noticed Mrs. Henderson.
“Stay away from my son,” Mrs. Henderson muttered, glaring at Olivia.
Shocked, Olivia watched Mrs. Henderson leave. Mr. Henderson followed suit, not even sparing her a glance. It made her angry to see that none of the Hendersons paid any attention to her.
“Charlotte!!” Milton’s voice reached her ears.
Her head snapped in his direction. Milton was hurrying over to Charlotte, his hand reaching out to grab hers, but before that could happen, Earl kicked him in the belly, stopping him.
“I said stay away!” Earl thundered. “Don’t you understand that you both are divorced? You were the one who proposed the divorce, why are you asking to speak to her?”
The rest stayed back for Earl to handle it. They all knew how much Earl had always wanted to hit Milton.
Milton clutched his belly. “I see it now. It’s because of them that you signed the divorce papers. Are they your new sugar daddies?”
“You!” Earl glared at Milton and was about to hit him again when Charlotte stopped him.
“There is no need to waste your time on someone like him,” Charlotte advised. “He always wants to be right.”
Earl withdrew his fist, his glare turning into a smile when he turned his gaze to her. “Alright, let’s go then.”
They all walked out of the restaurant. Milton was about to go after Charlotte when he heard a crash. He glanced to see where it had come from and saw Olivia lying on the floor. His eyes widened in concern.
“Olivia!” he yelled, rushing towards her.
Harper scoffed, and Charlotte glanced back over her shoulder. He still cared about Olivia but was still mad at her for no reason. Peeling her gaze away, she frowned. She was going to make sure he regretted picking Olivia over her.
Charlotte sighed in relief as soon as they were far from the restaurant. She had to control herself not to snap at him there, but he looked far different in just five hours after their divorce. Milton had always had a huge stain on him.“You know the stain on his white shirt?” Harper said with a grin. “I was the one who did it.”By this time, they were heading to the car. Her brothers had walked ahead, giving her privacy to talk to Harper.“You did a great job,” she responded.Harper’s eyes widened. “I thought you were going to reprimand me for doing that.”“I won’t.”“You usually do.”“Not anymore,” she implied.Harper shrugged. “How am I sure that you wouldn’t go back to him?”“I won’t. Not after all that he has done to me.”A smile broke on Harper's lips. “Sounds good to me.”“Could you tell Mom that I didn’t get married to her son like she asked me to? And I also didn’t greet her when I saw her—”“She wouldn’t mind,” Harper interrupted her. “Milton is going to have a hard time spe
It didn't take long for her to reach her parents, who wore expressions of seriousness.'They're going to scold me for sure,' she thought. 'They're going to ask why I refused to go with them previously.'Her father glanced down at her, and she felt so small, but his lips broke into a smile after a few seconds, stunning her.“Thank goodness you're back,” Laura cried out, pulling her daughter into her arms. The action startled Charlotte. She tried to pull back, but the hug was just too tight.“I thought you were never going to come back,” Laura said, then burst into tears.Charlotte was so stunned she had no idea how to respond. She didn't understand why they were acting that way because she was home.Although it felt weird to her that she was being hugged by a motherly figure, it felt so warm, too, that she wanted more.“Lotte,” her father called. “Welcome back.”It took an hour for Laura to let go of Charlotte. It would have taken longer if it wasn't for dinner. The family sat at the d
Charlotte stood in the kitchen, she was making her husband's favorite dish since it was their third anniversary. She texted him and asked him to come back home, so she was in a hurry to be done cooking before he came back. She hoped that he had read the text or at least remembered the anniversary, she hoped it wouldn’t be the same as the previous years. The sound of the kitchen door opening interrupted her thoughts. Assuming it was the maid, she called out, “I can handle the dishes myself. There’s no need to help me.” She spun around to find her husband standing there instead. “Milton?”Milton’s glare was colder and more pronounced than ever before. “Sign it,” he ordered, his voice devoid of warmth as he handed her a sheet of paper. “We are getting divorced, Charlotte.”Confused, Charlotte dropped the spoon she was holding and took the papers from him. Reading the words "Divorce Agreement," she shook her head in disbelief. “Milton, what is this? This must be a joke, right? We can’t g
Milton carried Olivia into the house, her hand wrapped around his shoulder. Getting into the house, he was expecting to see Charlotte in the house. He was waiting for her to come out and perhaps plead with him not to divorce.“I heard my elder sister is married to you,” Oliva muttered, her gaze focused on him. “Why don’t I see her anywhere?”He set her on the couch. “I already offered her the divorce papers, that Vixen has no place here after what she did to you.”A pitiful look appeared on Olivia’s face. “It’s all my fault that you had to divorce Charlotte. If I didn’t wake up, you both would still be together. If I had died like she wanted me to, this wouldn’t have happened…”“Pull yourself together Olivia. This has nothing to do with you, she got what she deserved…”“But…”“No buts.” He chimed in. “Forget about her. I will check if she is still home and if she is, I will make her sign the papers.”Olivia nodded. “What do you want to eat? I will ask the maids to make it for you.”“
That question made Olivia flinch. She wasn’t expecting that at all.“Apologize right now, Harper,” Milton said, taking his seat next to Olivia.“Why would I?” Harper snapped, folding her hands. “You invited us to dinner and I agreed to be here because I thought my sister-in-law was going to be here but all I see is your mistress. How long have you been cheating on your wife?”Milton and Harper's relationship wasn’t good since they were kids but it grew even worse when he got married to Charlotte. It was like she was holding a grudge against him, one that she wasn’t ready to let go.“Charlotte and I are divorced,” Milton announced. His father, who hadn’t been paying attention to him, froze halfway. Harper's eyes widened and his mother scowled at him.“What do you mean?” Harper rose to her feet, slamming her hand against the table, loud enough to draw everyone in the restaurant's attention. “Why did you divorce Charlotte? Is this because of this bitch?” she pointed an accusation finger
