Chapter 4 Adopted Daughter

Daniel suddenly stepped on the gas. His voice was like the raging wind outside the car as he said, "Are you in a rush to get the divorce finalized?"

What did he mean by that? She didn't need to start a new relationship right away. And nobody was sitting around waiting for her anyway.

She shook her head and said in a serious tone, "You're the one who's in a rush."

Daniel smirked. Then, he slowed the car down and said, "I'm not."

Rebecca was speechless, so she simply said nothing.

She already signed the divorce papers anyway. After she cut ties with the Browns tonight, she would no longer have anything to do with them.

Half an hour later, they reached the Brown residence.

The Browns had gained an elevated status in high society since they were longtime business partners with the Winstons. Plenty of people tried to get close to them. That was why almost all the empty spots outside the villa were lined with luxury cars at that moment.

When Rebecca got out of the car, the cold night breeze made her shiver.

She looked up and saw Daniel walking toward the villa's garden, where the party was held. He was dressed in a suit.

She had no other choice. So, she held up her dress and caught up with him.

All eyes were on Daniel as he walked in.

At that moment, a beautiful lady was surrounded by roses as she played the piano. The five-tier cake next to her was crowded with piles of gifts.

With the lights and the crowd's gaze on the prince, he approached the princess playing the piano. It looked just like a scene from a fairy tale.

It would seem tactless if Rebecca were to get too close to Daniel at such a moment. So, she walked slower behind him and tried to blend in with the crowd.

But before she could hide, Daniel suddenly stopped in his tracks. He turned back to look at her.

That sudden interruption ruined the moment for everybody. Yet, he didn't think anything was wrong.

Daniel frowned as he looked at Rebecca standing in front of the crowd. "Get over here," he said.

The guests then turned their gaze toward Rebecca.

"Who is she? She looks a little familiar. But I don't think I've seen her before."

"How could you forget her? She's the girl who was abandoned by her parents. She ended up in the Browns' home because she was switched at birth by the hospital. The Browns were kind enough to raise her as Jessica's sister. But then, she stole her sister's fiancé. How disgusting!"

"Now that you mention it, I'm starting to remember. She's the woman Mr. Winston sent abroad on their wedding day, right? How could she have the guts to return? If I were her, I would have ended my life a long time ago. It's too embarrassing to be alive. What a killjoy!"

The crowd was abuzz with gossip and stared at Rebecca with disdain. They weren't loud, but Rebecca heard everything clearly. She was close to them, after all.

She simply stood in place as if she couldn't hear those harsh words. But she didn't walk toward Daniel, either.

Jessica stopped playing the piano when Daniel spoke to Rebecca. She walked over gracefully and asked, "When did you return, Rebecca? Why didn't you tell us?"

It was extremely rude to not inform her adoptive parents when she returned. So, everybody viewed Rebecca in an even more negative light.

Rebecca smiled. "I got back last night, and I've already spoken to Mrs. Brown on the phone. Maybe she didn't tell you because she was afraid you'd be upset."

Ever since Jessica returned to the family, Rebecca stopped calling her adoptive parents Mom and Dad. Instead, she called them Mr. and Mrs. Brown.

"Why would I be upset? I'll have someone to keep me company now that you're back. Otherwise, Mom's going to nag me every day," she said sweetly.

That made Rebecca shudder in disgust, but she didn't let it show. Then, she took out a small gift box.

"Happy birthday."

"Aww, you got me a gift! Thank you, Rebecca!" Jessica accepted the gift and hugged her happily.

It left Rebecca completely frozen.
