Rebecca deliberately took her sweet time. She only left the villa after Daniel called her again.

Daniel frowned slightly when he saw her jogging over to the car. Then, he turned to straighten the gift box in the front seat.

"I'm sorry to keep you waiting. I took a nap earlier," Rebecca explained as she sat in the back seat.

Daniel glanced at her through the rearview mirror. His hands tightened around the steering wheel.

"Are you going to the party dressed like that?"

"Huh?" Rebbeca said before looking down at her outfit. "Is this not okay? It's just a party among the family. This should be fine."

Daniel tossed the gift box in the front seat to her. "Go get changed."

The white box had the label "Sprince" printed on it and was packaged meticulously. Rebecca recognized at a glance that it was a gown from Sprince's latest spring-summer collection.

She hesitated. Then, she put the box back.

"It's not right for me to change into the gift you're giving to Jessica."

Daniel was tapping his fingers on the steering wheel, but he stopped when he heard that.

"We haven't told anyone we're divorced yet. Are you trying to embarrass my family by going to the party dressed like that?"

"But—"

"I have another gift prepared for Jessi. This was given by the brand. I just left it in the car. Go get changed," Daniel cut her off coldly. He wouldn't take no for an answer.

"Alright." Rebecca felt helpless. She had no choice but to go back inside with the gift box and change into the gown.

It was a gradient dress in light blue that made her complexion even fairer. The skirt looked like a work of art as it sparkled when she moved.

The dress was slightly looser around the waist, which showed it wasn't her size. If not, she would have loved it very much.

After she got changed, she quickly went downstairs. But when she tried to open the car's back door, it was locked.

Daniel said in a sullen voice, "Sit in front."

Rebecca frowned. "I don't think that's appropriate."

To her, the front passenger seat of a man's car was only for his girlfriend. If he didn't have one, it would be for someone close to him.

Clearly, she was neither.

Daniel gave her the side eye and said, "So you think it's okay to treat me like your driver?"

"… That's not what I meant." Rebecca scratched her head. Then, she explained to the clueless Daniel.

Upon hearing her explanation, Daniel stared at her in silence.

"Jessi's nothing like you," he said. "She won't make a big deal about something so small. Get in. I don't want to repeat myself."

But Rebecca still made a big deal about it. "I won't go to the party then. I bet she doesn't want to see me anyway."

She gathered her dress up and walked away. But Daniel honked to stop her.

"Get in," he snapped.

Rebecca tried the back door again, and it opened.

She raised her eyebrows and got in the car while holding her dress up. Since it was the wrong size and the skirt design was complicated, it took her a while to get the dress straightened out.

After Daniel started driving, he asked, "Does the dress not fit you well?"

Rebecca replied casually, "Mmhmm. It's a little loose. I'll pin it up with a safety pin later, and it'll be fine. Don't worry. I won't embarrass you—"

As soon as she said that, he suddenly slammed on the brakes, cutting her off.

Rebecca wasn't wearing her seatbelt since she was sitting in the back. So, she hit her head on the back of the front seat. She could hear her head ringing.

What a jerk! Even if he wanted to kill her, there was no need to go to such lengths! If they got into an accident, he would die as well.

Rebecca put on the seatbelt quietly and looked at the view outside the window.

When she was abroad, she was Mrs. Winston.

Everybody knew she liked Daniel. So, killing her would make it easier for him to give Jessica her position.

But she had already signed the divorce papers like he wanted. He didn't have to make her disappear anymore.

To avoid having more troubles if this went on, Rebecca hoped their divorce could be finalized as soon as possible.

"Has our divorce been processed?"

Daniel suddenly stepped on the gas. His voice was like the raging wind outside the car as he said, "Are you in a rush to get the divorce finalized?"What did he mean by that? She didn't need to start a new relationship right away. And nobody was sitting around waiting for her anyway. She shook her head and said in a serious tone, "You're the one who's in a rush."Daniel smirked. Then, he slowed the car down and said, "I'm not."Rebecca was speechless, so she simply said nothing. She already signed the divorce papers anyway. After she cut ties with the Browns tonight, she would no longer have anything to do with them. Half an hour later, they reached the Brown residence. The Browns had gained an elevated status in high society since they were longtime business partners with the Winstons. Plenty of people tried to get close to them. That was why almost all the empty spots outside the villa were lined with luxury cars at that moment. When Rebecca got out of the car, the cold ni

Right when Rebecca wanted to push Jessica away, Jessica's expression suddenly changed. She frowned and let go of Rebecca. Jessica looked at Rebecca's waist and said, "Rebecca, this dress doesn't seem to fit you. Why do I feel it's too big for you?"Every event the ladies in high society attended was like a competition. Their dresses and jewelry were meant to flaunt their family's wealth. They would discuss which designer they were wearing, which tailor-made dresses were limited editions, and who designed their jewelry. If someone wore something out of fashion, they would single out that person. It would be worse if a person accidentally wore a knockoff. Clearly, a dress that didn't fit was embarrassing too. The people around Rebecca started to poke fun at her."How is she Mrs. Winston? She doesn't even have a dress that fits her. How pitiful." "Be a little understanding. She just came back after being forced to live abroad. It's good enough that she has a decent dress to we

The villa's garden was abuzz as the party was in full swing. Many ladies in high society gathered together. They had found a common topic for discussion—Rebecca's dress that didn't fit well. As the birthday party gradually became livelier, some people couldn't wait any longer. They asked Jessica to make a wish and cut her cake. Jessica walked up to Daniel and said, "Dan, come and cut the cake with me." Daniel glanced at his watch, and his expression darkened. "I'm going to look for Rebecca. You may go ahead and cut the cake with Mrs. Brown."Jessica didn't expect Daniel to be the first person to think of Rebecca. A vicious expression appeared on her face for a brief moment. She initially planned to mention that woman after cutting her cake. But when she checked the time, the situation should be at its climax. It was the perfect time to bring people over to check it out. She smiled and said, "I almost forgot Rebecca is back. I'll go with you then. I wonder if she's upset with

"What did I do?" Rebecca asked as she sat on the couch in the room. She was wearing a jacket, but she looked decent. Two men were sitting across from her with playing cards in their hands. They were dressed a little unconventionally, but they were still fully clothed. It didn't look like they were doing the deed at all. What the crowd saw was different from what they expected. So, they were all stunned. But Rebecca smiled. She looked around the room calmly before her gaze finally landed on Jessica. "Do tell. What did I do wrong?" Rebecca asked. The way Rebecca stared at Jessica sent a chill down her spine. Since when did a bumpkin like Rebecca have such a terrifying gaze? In the past, she was so scared of being kicked out of the Brown family that she hardly talked. She was afraid that the more she spoke, the more mistakes she would make. She still looked so submissive a while ago. But now, she seemed to have changed into a completely different person! Also, why did th

Jessica was about to act like she was wronged. But Rebecca cut her off, saying, "Don't be so quick to explain. I have evidence."At her signal, the thugs who were playing cards with her earlier put their phones on the coffee table. They played the video and audio recordings on them. The video showed Rebecca turning on the lights after entering the door. Right after that, the door was shut from the outside. She tried to turn the doorknob, but the door wouldn't open no matter what. It was only 30 seconds long, but it was enough to prove someone had set Rebecca up. They had locked her in the room. It was unlike what Jessica said. She didn't stay upstairs on purpose.Jessica immediately denied it. "Rebecca, I don't know why someone locked you in the room. I didn't come upstairs with you, either. Also, there's a good mix of people here today. Look, even thugs could enter …" She put the blame on Rebecca again. Someone indeed locked Rebecca up. But maybe it was because she offen

Karen probably didn't expect Rebecca to be so assertive. For a while, she was stunned. Then, she started crying even louder. "Why do you keep upsetting your sister? You wouldn't even be alive today if it weren't for us! You're all fine, but your sister's having an episode! And you still won't compromise! How can you be so cruel?"Rebecca looked at her in disappointment. She used to have a flicker of hope. After all, she had called Karen "Mom" for so many years. She wondered if the Browns would care about her after all the years they lived together. Even just a tiny bit of affection would have been enough for Rebecca. But it looked like it was just wishful thinking on her part. She cleared the catch in her throat in silence. But she still had to ask, "What if something happened to me today? What if I was really assaulted?"Karen was shocked. Then, she snapped back at Rebecca, "But you're fine now, aren't you? Nothing happened. Why can't you just let it go? You're her big sis

Rebecca stopped in her tracks when she heard Karen calling out to her. Karen got up from the floor with a cold expression. Then, she waved to have someone bring a document to her. "Since you've decided to leave our family, sign this disownment agreement." Having the disownment in writing was better than a verbal agreement alone. Rebecca was already an adult. Still, nobody could tell if she would go back on her word. Maybe she would refuse to give up being a member of a wealthy family. Karen didn't want her adopted daughter to take advantage of the Brown family! Without hesitation, Rebecca signed the disownment agreement. There were two copies, so she kept one. Once again, she thanked Karen. "Thank you for raising me, Mrs. Brown. Goodbye." She wanted to leave as soon as she said that. She ignored everybody, including her supposed ex-husband. "Rebecca!" When he saw her about to leave, Daniel went up to her and grabbed her wrist. She shook his hand off, and a look of disgu

As soon as Rebecca said that, Jessica and Karen's expressions changed. They regained their composure very quickly. However, most people still caught a glimpse of their expressions in that instant. They connected the dots, and they all figured out what was going on. Not only did Jessica and Karen want to kick the adopted daughter out of the family, but they also wanted to make themselves look good. They couldn't have their cake and eat it too. As soon as she got the results she wanted, Rebecca wasted no time. "I know my place, so I won't stay. To thank you for raising me, I won't hold anybody responsible for what happened today. From now on, I have nothing to do with the Brown family. So, I won't be using your family's name. Please don't worry about that!" Rebecca said in a loud voice. Then, she turned and left. Daniel wanted to go after her. But before he could move, Jessica stopped him from behind. "Dan, are you mad at me? I have no idea why I did all those things, eit

"Really?" Zane blurted out, staring incredulously at Sam, who nodded calmly. His unruly and carefree demeanor was restrained, and his composed attitude showed that he wasn't joking.Zane fell silent again, furrowing his brow as he intently observed Sam.It was as if he thought everything through in an instant, giving up without hesitation. He didn't even remind Zane of the request from years ago to take care of Penny. Instead, he said this would be the last time he would help out.Logically speaking, this should be a satisfactory outcome for Zane. After all, from any perspective, the Lowe family's scion would only be a burden to Sam.Looking again at Sam's attitude, it seemed he didn't want Penny to know he was the one quietly spending money to handle things behind the scenes.Since there was no plan to meet her, he didn't need to worry about anything after that. If that was the case, it would be better to just end it early. That way, if Sam saw Penny falling in love, getting mar

Because Penny declined his offer, Zane didn't insist. After a bit of small talk, he ended the call.He politely mentioned that if she needed any help, she could call this number again. If he could assist in any way, he certainly would. However, Zanw knew very well that, given Penny's temperament, she would rather give up what she had than actively seek help from a stranger.Yes, to Penny, Zane was just a stranger. He was a person she had met once but didn't really know. This time, Penny didn't respond as coldly as she did when she was 18. Instead, she exchanged a couple of polite pleasantries, mentioned that she would reach out if needed, and then hung up the phone. After that, she let out a long sigh of relief and lay on the lounge chair on the balcony, gazing at the view outside the window. There were fluffy white clouds in the azure sky and the greenery visible in the neighborhood. Sparrows were chirping persistently as they darted through the forest, and the cicadas loudly bu

Although the other person said only one word, Penny could still tell he didn't have any ill intentions.Because of that faint sense of familiarity, Penny didn't hang up the phone immediately. "Hello? May I ask what this is about?"The unfamiliar and distant tone probably made the man on the other end of the phone pause for a moment. It was only after a brief silence that he responded."Young lady, don't you remember me? It's Zane Moran."His voice carried a laugh, with a hint of teasing.Only then did Penny remember who he was, but she wasn't happy at all.Zane meant no harm when that incident happened back then. But despite that, over the years that had passed, he became one of the people and things Penny would rather not recall.Whether it was the exam she missed, the incident where Spencer took her to the hotel against her will, or Zane, who gave her 30 dollars for a taxi ride. She just wanted to hide all of them deep in her memories. The recent events had particularly made

You have no idea what you look like right now. You're almost like one of those disheartened protagonists in novels who hated the world."Penny clicked her tongue twice and said, "Aren't you exaggerating?"She didn't believe it. Penny's way of clarifying things was to simply tell the truth.Sometimes, trying to cover things up would just lead to needing 100 more lies to continue the cover-up. That would often end up making things worse and more ridiculous. It was better to tell the truth about the situation. To answer the question of why she lashed out at the Lowe family, she briefly explained her experiences over the years. Why didn't she attend the final paper of the college entrance examinations? She personally reopened that old wound. As for that man in the hotel, Penny didn't have much of an impression of him anymore. She only remembered not taking his business card and accepting 30 dollars from him.Why did she show up at that man's hotel room? She wrote it down truthfully—it was her father who personally took her and left her at the hotel, wanting to trade her like a commodity.Every single word was carefully considered and written by Penny. She didn't share much of these things with Cecilia. Once the official statements were released, Penny's career being ruined became a certainty. The only surprising thing was probably that after the film crew issued their statement, the largest investor also requested to withdraw. The film crew was completely shocked, but there was nothing they could do. The scion was willing to lose money just to withdraw his investment, so what could they do?The amount of money in the compensation was nothing compared to the amount that the scion planned to invest. The production team would incur a significant loss. With one less investor, the project's status was essentially downgraded. They had much less room to manipulate their gains now, too.One would understand why the scion was doing this if they used their brain a little. However, the protests from the audience couldn't be ignored, and compared to the investors, it was clearly more important to keep the show going. After all, they could always attract more sponsors, even if the amount o

It was truly exceptional. But few people paid attention to this information. After all, the achievements attained through hard work couldn't be faked. Even if the results weren't as expected, it was undeniable that she was stronger than many others.Regarding this topic, t
