Chapter 7 Playing Cards

"What did I do?" Rebecca asked as she sat on the couch in the room. She was wearing a jacket, but she looked decent.

Two men were sitting across from her with playing cards in their hands. They were dressed a little unconventionally, but they were still fully clothed. It didn't look like they were doing the deed at all.

What the crowd saw was different from what they expected. So, they were all stunned.

But Rebecca smiled. She looked around the room calmly before her gaze finally landed on Jessica.

"Do tell. What did I do wrong?" Rebecca asked.

The way Rebecca stared at Jessica sent a chill down her spine.

Since when did a bumpkin like Rebecca have such a terrifying gaze?

In the past, she was so scared of being kicked out of the Brown family that she hardly talked. She was afraid that the more she spoke, the more mistakes she would make.

She still looked so submissive a while ago. But now, she seemed to have changed into a completely different person!

Also, why did the two thugs Jessica hired let Rebecca sit in the room unharmed? They were even playing cards with her!

Jessica watched everything happening in front of her in anger. She still found it hard to believe.

But the truth was right there for everyone to see—Rebecca wasn't doing anything improper behind the divider.

Jessica was embarrassed to see the playing cards in Rebecca's hands as they proved her wrong.

She didn't know what to do. But then, her mother, Karen, pushed through the crowd.

Karen said, "Gosh, Becca. Why did you turn the closet into such a mess? You're even playing cards with sketchy people inside. Even if you didn't want to go to Jessi's party, you shouldn't have brought people like them here to ruin it."

Jessica immediately played along. She said pitifully, "I'm sorry, Rebecca. I was just too anxious earlier. After all, you took too long to get changed. Also, everybody saw how messy the room was when we entered. And the things we heard … You're still married to Dan, you see …"

Words that came out of their mouths as soon as they spoke were meant to slander Rebecca. They directed the crowd's attention back to the fact that Rebecca wasn't behaving properly.

So what if they didn't catch her in the act?

She took such a long time to get changed. The three of them were also in the room together. Who knew if something already happened or not?

Seeing the crowd's expression changed again, Jessica pretended to get anxious. She explained, "Rebecca, that's not what I mean. I was worried about you since you were upstairs for too long."

The mutterings of the crowd began to grow louder.

Jessica grabbed Daniel's arm anxiously.

She said, "Dan, it's probably because you got the size of the dress wrong. Rebecca got angry, so she didn't want to come downstairs. You should cheer her up. This whole thing is definitely not what everybody was thinking!"

Daniel calmly pulled his arm away from her while his gaze was fixed on Rebecca.

His lips were pursed tightly. He didn't say a word, but his furious expression gave away what he was thinking at that moment.

Compared to the tense onlookers, Rebecca was very relaxed.

She put the cards on the table casually after shuffling them. Then, she leaned against the couch with her legs crossed.

She looked at Jessica with a grin. "Are you saying I've done something improper with them in this room?"

She openly talked about it with a disdainful attitude. That made everyone think it was a misunderstanding. Maybe she was really just playing cards with the men in the room.

Jessica became more anxious. "Rebecca! That's not what I meant. I don't understand what you're saying. I was just worried something happened since you were upstairs for too long."

"Oh, you're worried about me?" Rebecca nodded indifferently.

Then her tone became serious. "Let me ask you something. You asked me to get changed. But that was just an excuse to lock me in this room with other people. What exactly are you trying to pull?"
