"What did I do to deserve this betrayal? After everything I did for you, I stayed by your side when you had no one, and this is how you thank me—by killing me? How callous must you be to murder someone who simply wanted the best for you?"

Unamused, she cocked her brow and tilted her head to the side. "You wanted what was best for me?" Her throaty chuckle overshadowed her contemptuous comments. "It's funny you mentioned that." She stalked closer to me and kneeled at my level, waving the bloodied blade in my face.

I winced from the pain in my side, edging away from her and more towards the bed. Pain coursed throughout my body.

"Were you there for me when my mother burnt me with a cigarette bud? Maybe when she flogged me for refusing to sleep with one of her men. What about the time she abandoned me in the middle of the night, starving? Were you there for me, then?"

Tears stung my eyes, and my lips trembled. The stored tears continued to flow and the sobs wracked my body, robbing it of the ability to speak—barely allowing a breath to be drawn. Still, nothing could deter my urge to survive this horrid ordeal.

I sobbed, my emotions from her betrayal breaking free, reminding me of the stab wound she inflicted at my side. "Why are you doing this? Something tells me this has nothing to do with your mother abandoning and abusing you."

She tilted her head to the right, and the dim moonlight highlighted her entire face: her full lips, wide and firm; the high arch of her eyebrows above them; and the crystal-clear glint in her beautiful hazel eyes.

"I suppose hiding it is no longer necessary, is it? After all, you will die." She grinned brightly and got to her feet. "I won't beat around the bush. Nor would I sugar coat what brought us to this predicament."

I closed my eyes, trying again to reach my mate or anyone who could save me. Yet, it was almost as though nothing worked. Sebastian should feel my distress, right? He would save me. Wouldn't he?

"You took him from me; the only man I ever loved!" Her plump, dark-red lips pursed into a frown. "Sebastian was supposed to be my mate, not yours. You stole him and tricked him into loving you."

"No!" I shook my head. I was weak. The wound at my side refused to stop bleeding, and by this time, it had soaked through the fabric of my thin white nightgown.

Cough, cough, cough.

"Yes, you did!"

"I never stole him from you. He is my mate, gifted to me by the Moon Goddess." An image of Sebastian's handsome face flashed through my mind like a cracked mirror. Pain clutched my heart as a memory of my mate flashed before my eyes. Would he know how hard I fought to stay alive for him and our pup? Would he know I loved him to the end?

"Please, I beg you, do not do this. I'm with child," I pleaded, putting a protective hold over my stomach. Was he or she even still alive in there? "Let me live, and I will leave. You can have Sebastian."

Tiny black specks blurred my vision as they danced in front of my red, swollen eyes. The agony became unbearable. I didn't know how much longer delaying the inevitable would save my life.

"So, what if you're pregnant? I am more than capable of giving him a pup. He needs a strong heir to take over as Alpha. You can't give him that, but I can and I will."

"How will you explain this?" I could feel the life draining from my body, but perhaps if I kept her talking, someone would find me. I only needed to hold on for a while longer. For Sebastian. For our pup. Also, for the pack.

"Explain what?" she asked.

"My death. Obviously, Sebastian and the rest of the pack would want to know how I died."

Her face stretched into her signature broad smile as she whispered, "If I were you, I wouldn't concern myself with such minuscule matters."

Whatever hope fluttered in my chest a few seconds ago of someone saving me disappeared with those few words. No one was coming to save me. Neither was I making it out of this alive.

Recognition dawned on me. "Was this your plan all along; to befriend me, and when I let my guard down, kill me? Only for a man who will never love you.”

I coughed again. Blood spewed from my lips and tears trickled down my face. I had run out of time. Pain coursed throughout my body as the realization that this was the end finally sank in. My body felt like blocks of cement, refusing to move. Everything felt numb. Maybe I should take a nap. That should be great.

"He will never love you. Even if you sleep with him, my mate will never love you." She didn't respond.

My heart ached even more. "I am sorry, little one." I placed a protective arm over my womb. "We'll watch over Daddy from above, okay? We will keep him safe."

My eyelids fluttered to a close as time passed. There was no pain, discomfort, or anything else. It was... pleasant. It seemed as if my body was asleep, but I was not. More tears defiled my cheeks, my eyes vacant, and my lips... that would never know the taste of him... the man I loved.

"I am sorry, Sebastian. I tried to hold on for as long as I could."

Yet nothing helped ease the tightening in my chest. In a fraction of a second, a bloodcurdling scream broke from my lips, drowning out the hammering of my heart against my ribs. What started as a whimper became a full-fledged outcry, forcing my body to quiver and my lips to quake."Sierra, sweetheart, it's time for you to wake up." [Backward or Forward]SEBASTIAN"Sebastian, you can't keep living your life like this, in tatters, dishonoring Sasha's memory. She would not want you to live like this, son. Round-the-clock intoxication, having countless women in the same bed you previously shared with her, none of it. Neither does your pack. And frankly, nor do I. Something needs to change... or else." My mother and Ambersky pack's former Luna stated with disgust."So, mother, what would you have me do? Would you rather I pretend it never happened? Continue to exist in the absence of her? Is that what you want me to do? Or would you rather that I choose a replacement for her?" I peered at her, observing the same shattered reflection I saw every time I looked in the mirror. She, too, had lost her mate, my father, former Alpha Dimitri Maddox."That is not what we want for you, son. Yes, we want you to be happy, but this is not happiness," she retorted, taking a few steps toward me. "It hurts. I understand the agony you

Alpha Sebastian can never love you. He is an Alpha, which means his second mate is somewhere out there, and so is our mate,” Sable, my wolf, growled in my head. That did not sit well with me. Sebastian and I loved each other. I would wait. Even if it took him years to see what I could offer him, he was worth every second I had to wait for him to come around. He needed me, and I needed him just as much, if not more. “Sable, you do not understand; you are a wolf. You have never been in love. So, you will not comprehend the heartache. You do not know what it is like to seek their touch, to wish to see their smile; if only it could make your day bearable. That is what Sebastian is to me. He is the center of my universe.” I peered out at the tannin-brown woodland with skyscraper-like trees. The morning stars sparkled like

Sierra, he doesn't deserve the sweet and kind person you’re, and neither do you deserve to be treated this way." I shook my head in bewilderment as I laughed dumbly. "No! No way, Katie! Jensen wouldn’t do such a thing. He'd never cheat on me." I couldn’t help but wonder if I believed the words as they left my lips and lingered in my head. Once upon a time, I would have believed it. But I wasn’t so sure anymore. "Have I ever lied to you? Sierra..." Her words trailed off with a heavy sigh. "It's obvious you don’t believe me, and that’s fine. You have given this man something you have never given away so readily before. Therefore, hearing this would be unacceptable." "Jensen has been there for me in ways that neither you nor my mother could. He’s gentle and sweet and makes me smile like I’m the only girl in the world. How wou

[Memory] SEBASTIAN What would I tell my beta and everyone else about what Sasha told me? But wouldn’t that sound insane? Repeating everything she said, word for word, ‘to find her.’ While it was crazy, I had no other way of stating it other than how she said it. In my mind, that sounded insane. Still, they needed to know. I stood by the window in my office, my hands knotted into white-knuckle knots, perplexed, and detached. Regardless of her warning, I had to admit that seeing her again since that day made my pulse race and a similar dread gripped my gut as if she had told me something I didn’t want to know. It just made little sense. Find her. But who? Whom was I meant to find? The pain coursing through my body transported my whole being backward, back to the past, when I lost her. It seemed like an eternity in my heart. However, in actuality... THREE YEARS AGO “Why must it be you, Sebastian? You’re the Alpha. Why don't you send Rory instead? I’m sure the contractors will not

[Betrayal] SIERRA I sat in my car, my head on the steering wheel, for an unknown amount of time, hoping the tears wouldn’t fall. Jensen wouldn’t hurt me. I wanted to believe that. I wanted to trust that the man I committed everything to would never destroy everything without remorse. My chest heaved with pain, and resentment wrapped around my heart. With all this pain, it was pointless to hold back the tears. I couldn’t sit here any longer. I reached for my phone and redialed Katie’s number, but she didn’t answer. Despite her absence of a romantic connection, I would have considered her advice. What would she even suggest, though? Since I knew her, the girl had never been in a relationship. Without Katie’s help, I fished for my keys, but they weren’t in the car or on my person. That implied they were in Jensen’s flat, maybe on the sofa. “Crap!” a grunt rumbled in my throat. Frustrated, I whacked my hand on the steering wheel once, twice, and a third time, wincing at the discom

[Apparitions] SEBASTIAN His concerned voice resonated in my ears as the words left his lips. Rory’s tall and muscular frame stood a few good inches over me. Black, medium-length hair framed his chiseled cheekbones and tan features. He guided me to the couch, pushing me down onto it. He then dashed over to the pitcher of water on the desk and poured me a glass, handing it to me. “Sebastian, what happened? I came in here to find you screaming. I’ve not seen you this distraught since...” he trailed off; his crestfallen face parallel to the carpeted wooden flooring. Sip by sip, I emptied the glass and placed it on the center table. My speech faltered, uncertain of what to say first. Everything was a jumbled mess, and my tongue felt heavy. I buried my face in my hands and expelled an exasperated sigh. “How do I begin?” I grumbled as I leaned back on the couch, my back thudding on the velvety sofa. “Rory, what happened that night? I know we had gone over it a thousand times, but it s

From where I stood, no shuffling emanated from his room. But I knew he was in there. The sounds of his thumping heart didn’t elude my ears, nor did his mumblings. A minute later, the door opened, and my heart leaped into my throat, stealing my breath at the handsome God that stood before me. Expressive large pools of jade green paced up and down my body, lingering on my breasts before his ambiguous stare latched onto my crotch. His gaze returned to my face, flitting between my eyes and lips. I was confident I detected something resembling desire. “Alpha, did you see something you like?” I crossed my arms, but they pushed my breasts forward, eliciting a smirk from his perfectly defined lips. Dark eyes studied me as he stood there saying nothing, his arms resting on the frame at our sides. Sebastian’s silent gaze dug i

[This Is Not The End] ARIELLA It took us a while to get there, but it was a pleasant walk. The trees were all in full bloom, and it smelled delightful. As we walked, I started feeling a little better. I felt lighter and happier. He was right, though. I didn’t need to worry about him. He was fine. And if he wasn’t, I would be there to take care of him. We reached the stream, and it was gorgeous, surrounded by a ring of tall redwoods and the sun setting behind them. The water glistened in the light. “It’s beautiful,” he murmured. “Yeah,” I agreed. I sat on the edge of the stream, watching the ripples in the water as the gentle breeze stirred the surface. Malik lay on his back next to me, his eyes closed and a contented expression masking his features. “I could get used to this. The tranquility here is unlike anything I’ve felt in a long time.” I rested my chin on my shoulder, watching him, feeling the butterflies flutter with glee in my stomach. Immediately, I felt better than I

[Memories] ARIELLA “I have a better idea,” I murmured as I studied the guard. “Instead of repeating everything to my father, why don’t you tell him yourself? Or, even better, have my mother look into your memories.” “Look into my memories?” Malik’s brow quirked in question. “How is she gonna do that?” I flashed him a smile, confident in my plan. “Here’s what hunters don’t know about my mom. Unlike the other wolves, my mother was born a witch from another realm. A realm where only witches, wizards, and mages existed.” “That’s, uhm... that’s something,” Malik acknowledged, the wheels in his head clocking overtime as he processed the information. “Yeah, so recently I learned my mom has this cool ability to see people’s memories,” I explained. “Lucky for me, I was born with a similar power. Mine is to see the outcome of major events. At least that’s what I think. Which was how we had known to expect another attack.” “From the moment we met, I knew there was something special about y

Had you not been my mate—although you could’ve died in battle—you wouldn’t have been here.” He stopped chewing, looking at me with intense curiosity. “Are you sure you don’t want to know what I need you to do for me or the time to think it over?” I shook my head. “I doubt it’ll be worse than you locked in a cell.” “Okay.” He gave a brief chuckle. “I think this will be the first time I ever requested a favor from a wolf—a favor for a former hunter.” “A favor from your mate,” I corrected, which made him smile. “I will check on your family, Malik. [Debatable] ARIELLA Infuriated, hands balled into fists, nostrils flared, and hatred burning in my eyes, I stormed after my father. “Was locking him away seriously necessary?” I called out, trying to catch up with my father’s long strides. “He proved he was a wolf, yet you locked him away anyway, like some rabid dog.” Ahead, my father stopped and turned halfway towards me, leveling a look that said he’d heard enough. I had crossed the line and was making things worse. “I have to be sure he’s not an imposter, a hunter pretending to be a wolf. It’s like Alpha Declan pointed out. Nobody knows what made him a wolf.” I shook my head in disgust. “Malik did nothing wrong. He’s not some test used to see how well we can protect our pack.” “You’ve got no clue what you’re talking about,” Dad said, returning to his earlier pace. “There’s a lot to do. I suggest you focus on that before you join your mate in the cells.” “Ugh!” I let out an angry growl and kicked a small stone in my path, sen

[Not A Threat II] MALIK The moment I saw her face when I awoke after blacking out earlier, I realized how grateful I was to still be alive, even as a werewolf. Not just that. I also understood the severity of this werewolf bond Owen had told me about. The bond was more than just a physical connection. It was also both emotional and spiritual. It sure would take some getting used to. The love and concern in Ariella’s eyes, despite her efforts to hide it, told me she was also thankful I was alive. She was worried about me and hoped I would be okay. Little did she know how much effort it took not to kiss her then and there. Then, suddenly, the world got quiet. The wind rustling trees, the birds tweeting, and the insects chirping all stopped. Her breath was in my ear. I could feel her heartbeat, fast and steady. For a split second, my body froze, and my heart stopped beating. Just for a second, but once my body registered what was happening, it was everything and nothing like I imag

[Not A Threat] ARIELLA I placed my hand on his chest and willed him to wake up. His skin was warm to the touch, but he didn’t stir. I glanced around frantically, trying to find something to help him. My eyes landed on a large tree branch lying on the ground a few feet away. On my feet in seconds, I grabbed it and ran back to his side. I placed the branch under his arm and tried to apply pressure to the wound, but it was gushing blood. I had to do something, and fast. Or he would bleed out. Ripping off a piece of my shirt, I tied it around the branch, hoping it would stem the flow of blood. Thank the goddess, it had the desired effect. The blood slowed to a trickle. “El!” Abby screamed behind me, her heavy footfall letting me know she was running towards me. “Over here.” I shouted, never taking my eyes off my mate. I stripped off my belt and wrapped it around his arm, compressing the wound. “Oh, thank goodness!” she said as she knelt down next to me. “What the hell happened?”

[Is This The End?] DECLAN We marched further into the woods, where we came across a small camp. From where I stood, ten clicks away, I could smell the faint scent of death. As I approached, I noticed the bodies of several wolves, burned and bloody, lying in the dirt. I pulled out my bow and approached with caution, trailing behind the group. I held my breath as we stepped over the dead bodies. In an instant, my body grew tense as I scanned the area, trying to discern what had taken place at the camp. My fingers tightened around my bow out of reflex. “Are they all dead?” someone murmured in a low voice. “It looks that way,” I replied, my tone grim. “We have to be careful; whatever or whoever did this could still be out there.” My men nodded and followed me through the camp, their guns drawn. They found the bodies of several hunters, but no sign of what had killed them. A stillness hovered in the air, as if all life had been sucked out of this place. I peered into a nearby tent,

[Waiting Impatiently] DECLAN I set my jaw and drummed my fingers against my leg. You could hear the tension in the air. Over the last twenty minutes, my troops and I had been waiting in my parents’ old cabin for the hunters. I recall my parents taking me here as a child. When things were quiet on the pack lands in the summer, we’d come up here, and I’d spend hours in the lake five clicks north of here. Though I didn’t want to sully those fond memories of them by utilizing the cabin as a hideout during the war, it was the only accessible spot where we would be safe and keep an eye out for the hunters closing in on the pack. Hopefully, my parents wouldn’t be angry at me for using it other than as a vacation home. As the minutes ticked by, I felt my anxiety rise. I felt out of control, waiting for something awful to happen to my pack. I tried to tamp down my fear and focus on what we needed to do. All this panicking had me wondering if this was my last day alive. Since Jasper to

[Betrayal] MALIK I took the western route when Ariella and her companion were out of sight, heading toward the location where I knew the hunters would camp. I needed answers for this betrayal, despite the existence of a treaty between the two species. Trekking over fallen logs and broken twigs, I drew in a deep breath, filling my lungs with fresh air. I quickened my pace as I drew closer to the location, scanning the forest around me for any signs of movement. My heart thumped as I finally spotted the camp, its tents distinguishable among the trees. Owen emerged from the tent. He dialed something on his cell and pressed it to his ears. “Gil, it’s Owen. Bruno reported he saw four wolves heading your way. He said Malik killed Titus to protect a she-wolf and another wolf.” He said, frowning. “Yeah, I believe it’s her,” Owen answered after a minute, his voice slightly hushed. I froze, my stomach dropping to the ground. He paused, his frown deepening. “I’ll handle it,” he said. “
