The nurse looked taken aback but then smiled politely and stepped back. He helped Antony lift Claire's IV and placed it on the side hook of the new bed while Antony transferred Claire from the stretcher to the bed the nurse had brought.

After Claire was moved, one of the nurses left, leaving Antony with the first nurse, and they both pushed Claire's bed out of the emergency department toward the elevator that would take Claire to her room. After positioning the bed, the nurse politely said goodbye and mentioned that he would return once the lab results were in.

Antony surveyed the room he had requested. The VVIP room provided by the hospital seemed quite decent to him. No matter how luxurious a hospital with hotel-like facilities might be, it could never be fully enjoyed by the patients. Still, Antony wanted Claire to feel at least somewhat comfortable. He wanted Claire to feel calm and undisturbed by the cries, whines, and screams of other patients. What disturbed him even more were the relatives of the patients, who often made more noise than the patients themselves.

His phone rang again, and once more, he saw his daughter's name on the screen. Antony instructed Flavia to come to Claire's room, and within ten minutes, the two teenagers appeared, accompanied by an adult man whom Antony recognized.

"How is she?" Gladwin asked as he walked closer and immediately checked Claire's condition.

"The doctor took her blood sample. They are still testing it in the lab to determine if Claire has dengue fever or typhoid," Antony replied honestly.

Gladwin simply nodded while gently stroking Claire's head. A pang of jealousy crept into Antony's heart at witnessing that tender treatment. Even though he knew Gladwin was Claire's twin brother, he couldn't help but feel envious.

A knock at the door made everyone turn their heads. "Gladwin?" greeted the female doctor who had examined Claire earlier. "What are you doing here?" she asked, looking surprised.

"Are you the one who examined Claire?" Gladwin asked in return.

"Claire?" The woman furrowed her brow, glancing back and forth between Antony, Gladwin, and Claire. Then it seemed the doctor realized something. "Hampton. Claire," she murmured in understanding. "Yes, I was the one who examined her. Who are you?" she asked again.

"I'm her twin," Gladwin replied flatly. The doctor nodded again. "What are the results?" Gladwin asked, concerned.

"I commend your twin," the doctor said. "The blood test results show she is negative for dengue fever. After the Widal test, she has been confirmed to have typhoid. From what I can see, it seems your sister has had symptoms for about a week. But she seems to have been holding back. You know what your sister needs regarding food and care, so I don't think I need to explain that again," the doctor continued.

Gladwin simply nodded. "Thank you," he said.

The female doctor smiled. "You're welcome. If anything comes up, just contact me directly," she said before taking her leave from the room.

Abigail walked over and nudged Gladwin's arm with her elbow. "Ooh, look at you..." she teased with a mischievous grin on her face. "Who is she? Your target?"

Gladwin playfully tapped his niece on the head with a little force. "You're such a know-it-all!" Abigail rubbed her head while Flavia chuckled. "She's my senior," Gladwin replied honestly.

"A real senior or a senior in another sense?" she teased again. "What if she's your crush? A beautiful doctor with a hint of Japanese looks. What was her name again? Harumi?"

Gladwin raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, Harumi. She's half Japanese. What do you think I am? There's no way I'd approach another man's wife, especially one who already has a child," he explained.

Abigail and Flavia stared at him in shock. "Really, Uncle?" Abigail asked, incredulous.

"Go check for yourselves. You can even ask for her marriage certificate if you don't believe me."

Abigail turned to Flavia, and they both shook their heads and shrugged. After that, they moved away from the bed and sat on the sofa in the room, leaving Gladwin and Antony standing on either side of the bed.

"Thank you," Gladwin said politely.

"For what?" Antony asked, confused.

"For bringing Claire here," Gladwin replied. "I just got back and saw your daughter and Abigail at Claire's house. They told me you brought her here. I appreciate that." His tone was a bit stiff.

Antony nodded. "Did you stay with her all night?" This time, there was a hint of emotion behind Gladwin's question. Antony noticed it but chose to be honest. He nodded in response. "I hope you didn't take advantage of the situation," Gladwin said again.

In his heart, Antony wanted to laugh, especially when he remembered what Claire had done to him earlier. If Gladwin knew what Claire had done, would the man believe it?

"Should I take an oath?" Antony challenged him back.

Gladwin chuckled and then shook his head. "I don't think that's necessary, Sir," he replied. "Actually, as long as my sister is okay with whatever you do, I'm fine with it too," he added.

Antony was taken aback. "We're both adults. Claire knows what boundaries she can and cannot cross. So whatever you two do, I really don't mind. Unless you make her uncomfortable, then I'll step in," he said.

Antony still didn't understand what Gladwin was getting at. He could only look at Claire's twin with a furrowed brow.

"I know you like my sister. And seeing how you're watching her right now, I won't oppose that, especially if Claire is starting to open up to you. I can only support it. But..." he trailed off.

"But?" Antony furrowed his brow again.

"But everything won't be easy for either you or Claire."

"What do you mean?"

"I just want to let you know. This isn't a threat," Gladwin continued before Antony could object. "But I want to inform you about a possibility that you might face. So before everything goes too far, before my sister falls too deeply in love, I want to assure myself, Claire, and you about how much you truly want Claire in your life. How far are you willing to fight for her?"

Antony's brow furrowed again.

"If you only like Claire, I hope you step back now. But if you love Claire and genuinely want her in your life, I will be the first in my family to support you," Gladwin continued. "Because I can assure you, winning Claire's heart isn't as easy as winning over other women." Gladwin's tone wasn't threatening but rather assertive.

Antony turned to glance at Claire, who was still fast asleep. He then looked at the two teenagers sitting on the sofa, who were now looking back at him. The hopeful expressions in their eyes seemed to remind him of something important.

He looked back at Gladwin, meeting his gaze before answering. "I want her. I want her to be my wife, to be the mother of my child and our future children. Is that enough?" he asked challengingly. Gladwin raised the corners of his mouth.

Antony sat in silence in the darkness of his office. His eyes stared blankly out the window. His mind wandered back to Gladwin's words in the hospital a few hours earlier."I completely support your relationship if you both like each other," Gladwin had said in a voice that seemed to be meant only for Antony, considering Abigail and Flavia were also in the room. "But everything won't be easy for you."Antony silently regarded Claire's twin. "My mother isn't someone you can easily conquer," Gladwin explained. "Especially since Claire is the only woman in our family."Forget about my two older siblings. My second brother will likely agree with me and approve of your relationship if you truly love each other."As for my eldest brother, Abigail's father, I'm not so sure. Let's just say I'm not as close to him as I am with my second brother and Claire. But from my perspective, he wouldn't strongly oppose it if Claire wants it."What you really need to worry about here is my mother. To this

Driving at a moderate speed, Antony made his way to his cousin's apartment. He already knew the password to enter, so he acted casually, as if visiting was a regular occurrence for him, even though the number of times he had actually been there could be counted on one hand.He entered the password for the door lock. Altezza was sitting at the bar table with her laptop open in front of her. She briefly lifted her head before returning her focus to the screen."What's so important that it made you come to Kansas, cousin?" Antony asked as he walked over to the fridge and grabbed a cold drink. Although the apartment was rarely occupied, he knew that his cousin had hired someone to manage it and stock the kitchen and fridge with food—at the very least, drinks and instant meals."If you're worried about me stealing Claire from you, you don't have to be. I won't do it," Altezza replied casually. She shut her laptop and turned in her chair to fully face Antony. "I've actually been planning to

Claire opened her eyes again. Her room felt quiet. Moments ago, she had managed to send Gladwin away after her twin received a call from the hospital where he was interning. Now, she could only sit in silence, reflecting on her conversation with Gladwin."Open your eyes, Claire. I know you're not asleep," Gladwin said just as the door to her hospital room closed.Claire fully opened her eyes and saw her twin still sitting in the chair beside her. Gladwin helped her raise the bed and, with careful attention, handed Claire a drink without her even asking. He then returned to his seat and looked at Claire with a gaze full of apology."Did I act out of line?" he asked softly.Claire knew what her twin meant. It all related to Gladwin's words to Antony. She raised the corner of her mouth in a faint smile. "No," Claire replied softly. "You didn't do anything wrong. Everything you said is true. That's just how it is.""Are you starting to take an interest in Antony?" Gladwin asked again, his

Still in a sitting position and embracing Claire. Both of them now raised their heads to look at the sky which, although bright, was still starless."If only," Claire began to sound off. "My mom rejected you outright. What would you do?" Antony turned to look at Claire but she wasn't looking at him at all."To be honest, I don't know what to do myself." Antony answered as he was. The man's words distracted Claire. "To be honest, I'm not that confident, Claire." Antony replied again. "Maybe I'm good at my job. Maybe I'm good at leading employees. But you know that when it comes to family, I'm a big zero." The man smiled sadly. For some reason, seeing him like that made Claire feel sorry for herself. Claire changed her sitting position to sideways and looked at the man."I failed as a father. And as a son, I'm not a son to be proud of because instead of easing my parents' burden, I've given them an additional burden by giving Flavia long-term care."As for being a husband? If I were a p

In the early morning, when Claire woke up, she heard Antony asking for permission to go back to his house for a while to pick up a new stock of clothes and promising to bring Claire a home-made breakfast later. Claire just nodded her head and went back to sleep. But at around seven in the morning, she woke up again. At first he thought the noises in the room were because Antony had returned. But she was quite surprised because it was not Antony, but her eldest brother, Richard."Brother?" Claire asked hoarsely. Her brother who was standing beside her bed turned his head. "When did you come?" She asked again after clearing her throat."Just now." Richard replied casually. Her eldest brother helped Claire to sit down. "Where's Gladwin?" He asked again."Gladwin?" Claire frowned. Richard nodded his head towards the sofa where Antony's old pillow lay. "Be back in a minute." Claire replied ambiguously. "Who told you that I was here?" Claire asked again."Abigail." Richard replied briefly.

Richard shook his head. "Don't be stupid, I'm not that petty." Richard snarled in exasperation. "I'm not concerned about your past or your daughter. Whoever Claire's future husband is, whether he's a widower or a bachelor, whether he's young or as old as you are, as long as Claire loves that man and wants to live with him I won't mind. After all, I know your character well enough and I know your family well enough. And if you still have the same character as Antony from our high school days, I will approve of your relationship while your failure," Richard shrugged, "everyone has their own storyline." he continued firmly. Both Claire and Antony breathed a sigh of relief at Richard's words. But it didn't last long as Richard then continued."The problem here is her." He pointed at Claire. "Our mother has brought a future husband for her."Now it's Claire and Antony who are shocked by Richard's statement."What do you mean?" Claire asked confused."Didn't Gladwin tell you?" Richard asked

In the afternoon, the commotion Gladwin had predicted really happened. Claire's mother came along with Claire's second brother and also her sister-in-law. Luckily, Antony wasn't there because Claire had sent him off to work shortly after Richard's resignation.Claire tried to act natural, as if she had no idea what her mother was planning when she walked in without knocking."Why didn't you tell me you were sick?" Asked her mother who immediately came over and took a look at Claire's condition."I'm fine, the doctor said that I can go home tomorrow." Claire replied flatly. Her second brother also came closer and touched her forehead."Are you really okay now?" He asked with concern.Claire nodded her head in response. "I know I'm the prettiest and most adorable child so when I got sick you guys were really worried about me. But there's really no need for you to fly for hours to see my condition." She said deliberately joking. Her sister-in-law just gave her typical soft smile."Your s

The two teenagers turned their heads simultaneously towards the aisle as they saw an ominous aura spread around them. Moreover, people were now looking in the same direction. Where the woman Flavia and Abigail had not expected to see had just appeared."Why is that woman there?" Abigail whispered to her best friend.Flavia who had been engrossed in her digital camera and taking pictures was now holding it languidly. "I don't know." She replied innocently. She looked back at the photo produced by her hand, choosing to ignore Abigail and her suspicions."Shall we go closer to them?" Abigail asked in a challenged tone.Flavia raised her head again and looked at her best friend with a furrowed brow. As Abigail started to take a step, Flavia held her back by holding Abigail's arm tightly and shaking her head."No, Abby." Antony whispered in the girl's ear that inevitably made Claire shudder in horror. The man's lips teased her, starting to caress the side of her face so that she unconsciously looked up and gave him the opportunity to explore the slender recesses of her neck."Can I ask for my rights now?" he asked in a pleading tone.Claire shook her head."Why again now?" Antony stopped his car outside Claire's house and unlocked the gate with the spare key he had kept for a long time.Claire's car hadn't moved from its spot. It was still there since the last time Antony visited his fiancée's home, before Claire's family took her back.Who knows? Maybe Claire could hear the gate opening or maybe not. But one thing was clear: his wife did not welcome him at all because Claire's house felt eerily silent. Was Gladwin playing a trick on him? Who knows if Claire was really back at her house. He opened the front door and stepped inside, greeting her. Once again, there was no response. When Antony noticed Claire's bedroom door slightly ajar, he walked in.Claire wasn't there. All that was left was the small suitcase she had brought from the hotel room."Claire, sweetheart," Antony called out again, but still, there was no answer.Could it be that Claire left again after dropping off her suitcase and saw Gladwin leave? he wondered to himself.Antony continued

I apologize," she said in a whiny tone. The woman tried to grab Antony's hand again, but he pushed her away once more, causing her to fall and kneel on the cold marble floor. Not wanting to give up, Anastasia wrapped her arms around Antony's legs, forcing him to stop."I'm truly sorry," she pleaded again, her voice desperate. She begged for the man's compassion, finally realizing that everything Antony had said in the room earlier was no joke. "I... I..." She couldn't find the words. "I'm sorry, please forgive me," she begged, tears starting to wet her face.Antony looked down at her with a sharp gaze. "Do you realize that what you're doing has crossed the line?" he asked in his cold tone.Anasta

Antony arrived at a luxurious five-star hotel located not too far from his family's hotel. As soon as he parked his car, he headed straight to the room Letizia had mentioned when he contacted his cousin earlier.Inside the lavish room rented by his ex-wife sat Antony's mother, Brianna Quirino, alongside her husband, Mr. Arthur. Meanwhile, Letizia stood with her hip leaning against the bar chair, her arms crossed over her chest.Don't ask where her children and husband were. Antony guessed that his sister-in-law was waiting for them somewhere. The three family members displayed different expressions, surely with different thoughts filled with questions that might mirror what was in Antony's own mind.On the other side of the room, right above the sofa facing away from the window, two women sat side by side. One was Anastasia, a woman he had pretended to date for work purposes. The other was his ex-wife, the woman he once loved deeply, who had given him a beautiful and devoted daughter.

But then Claire tried to clear her mind. She refused to believe that her mother could be so cruel to her; if that were the case, Claire might end up resenting her mother for the rest of her life.Disloyal? She didn't care about that word. Her face was already free of makeup, and her hair had been released from the beautiful tiara she had worn earlier. Now, the makeup artists helped Claire start to unbutton the lovely gown she had worn, which had so many buttons down the back.Once everything was removed, Claire opened her suitcase, searching for clothes. She decided to clean herself up in the bathroom that was in the dressing room.Feeling refreshed after showering and washing her hair, Claire put on the clothes she had chosen: a pair of jeans and a loose shirt instead of the dress Antony had picked out for her to wear on their honeymoon, which they were supposed to take right after the reception she was now reluctant to attend. No, she wouldn't just surrender herself to her husband a

Claire could only smile in response to that accusatory remark.A snippet of the song that Adaline was singing on stage made Claire and Antony hold hands tightly, hoping that no obstacles would disturb them in the future.Guests began to dwindle.
