Still in a sitting position and embracing Claire. Both of them now raised their heads to look at the sky which, although bright, was still starless.
"If only," Claire began to sound off. "My mom rejected you outright. What would you do?" Antony turned to look at Claire but she wasn't looking at him at all.
"To be honest, I don't know what to do myself." Antony answered as he was. The man's words distracted Claire. "To be honest, I'm not that confident, Claire." Antony replied again. "Maybe I'm good at my job. Maybe I'm good at leading employees. But you know that when it comes to family, I'm a big zero." The man smiled sadly.
For some reason, seeing him like that made Claire feel sorry for herself. Claire changed her sitting position to sideways and looked at the man.
"I failed as a father. And as a son, I'm not a son to be proud of because instead of easing my parents' burden, I've given them an additional burden by giving Flavia long-term care.
"As for being a husband? If I were a perfect husband, none of this would have happened." He continued. "Everything about me is a reason for your mother to reject me. Unless she likes rich, handsome and established men, that's me." Antony said arrogantly. He was trying to joke but Claire didn't seem to be.
Claire could only remain silent. Everything Antony said was true. Even if Claire tried to calm the man down with sweet words, she felt it was useless.
Seeing Claire's silence, Antony also tilted his body. His left leg was raised and folded on the garden chair. His body was now completely facing Claire.
"All those reasons will indeed be weapons that your mother can use to reject me. But, Claire." Antony looked at Claire sternly. "I swear, I promise that as long as you will stand by me, I will accept everything your mother does to me.
"Even a strong stone will be defeated by water because water does not get tired of dripping on it. Your mother's heart, no matter how hard, will slowly soften if she knows that I can make her daughter happy.
"And I promise that I will not repeat the same mistake. I don't want to fail a second time." He said solemnly.
Claire shook her head. "No need to promise anything." Claire said softly. She looked at Antony and smiled. Her right hand grabbed the man's left hand and clasped it tightly. "I can't promise forever. But for now, I will fight by your side. And if you really want to change, change for yourself. Don't change for others. Or at least, change for the people you love. For Flavia and your parents. As for me, it's enough that you don't give up, that's proof that you really want me."
Antony smiled too. He released Claire's grip on his left hand. Afterward, he raised that hand which he then used to gently rub Claire's head.
"I like you," he said softly. His left hand moved down and was now on the side of Claire's face. Her thumb rubbed Claire's cheek so gently. "And right now, that feeling is getting bigger and bigger." He said again. His hand came back down, grabbed Claire's right hand and wrapped it around her with both of his large hands. "I don't know the reason why Flavia wants you to be her stepmother so much." He said as he looked down at Claire's small hand in his. "But what I do know is that I don't want anyone else to have you right now." Antony said firmly.
Claire shrugged with a nonchalant gesture. "Claire Hampton does have an incomparable charm." She joked. Making Antony laugh. Antony anxiously pinched Claire's cheeks with both hands. "It hurts." Claire whined with a pouty face. Antony was wide-eyed. He quickly rubbed her cheeks with both thumbs.
"Sorry." He said then. Claire did not respond and was still pouting. "Let me treat it." Antony said again.
Unexpectedly, Antony kissed both her cheeks in quick succession. Claire, who was now wide-eyed, looked at Antony in disbelief.
"Why, not enough?" Challenge the man again.
Then again with a swift movement, the man wrapped his big hands around Claire's face, pulled her close and then kissed her lips briefly.
Again, Claire's reaction was only to widen her eyes. But a second later she glared at Antony.
"Sir!" She exclaimed loudly.
Antony laughed instead. "Think of it as revenge. That's how I felt when you kissed me yesterday without warning." Antony replied without any guilt.
Claire narrowed her eyes sharply. But Antony ignored her. "If you pout even more, I can do more than that." Antony threatened again. "Don't forget that I'm an experienced man." He continued.
Claire was again wide-eyed at the indecent threat. She snorted and then chose to get up from her seat. "Where are you going?" Antony asked confused.
"Stay away!" Claire replied curtly. "The aura here is getting bad. Perhaps a demon has started wandering around and whispering to you to do bad things." She continued.
Antony chuckled, but also got up and walked with the girl. He stood on her left side, helping her push the IV pole. While his right hand wrapped around Claire's waist.
"I thought you wanted to find a quieter place so I could prove my point." He teased again, making Claire look up and give him a sharp look.
Antony again chuckled. His hand slipped out and came up to touch Claire's cheek.
"Your face is red because of what? Because of the fever or because of embarrassment?" He teased again.
Claire reflexively raised her hand and touched her own cheek. Making Antony laugh again.
"Ah, I see. Your cheeks are flushed because you're imagining strange things about..." he teased again.
Claire snorted and hit the man's arm in annoyance.
"Shut up!" She ordered.
But instead of shutting up, Antony laughed even harder. The man nudged Claire's shoulder with his elbow lightly and then whispered.
"I'm a kissing expert, do you want to try it?" He challenged.
"Sir!" Claire shrieked loudly.
Antony laughed again. "It's very different when flirting with a virgin. Just like that, your face is already as red as a tomato. Especially when it comes to the night..."
Before Antony could speak, Claire had already silenced the man's mouth. But Antony was no less powerful. He grabbed Claire's right hand that the girl was using to cover her mouth, turned her hand so that the back of her hand was facing Antony's face then kissed it gently.
"For that matter, there is no need to talk about it." She said softly. "I'll practice later." She continued with a flirtatious smile on her face.
With a jerk, Claire removed her hand from Antony and chose to turn her face away in shame.
They had returned to Claire's room. The room was still as lonely and empty as it was when Antony arrived. Until he finally remembered one thing and asked Claire again.
"Where's Gladwin? Didn't he say he would take care of you?" he asked in a displeased tone.
Claire shrugged her shoulders indifferently. "He went to another hospital."
Antony frowned for a moment, then remembered that Gladwin was a resident. Meanwhile, Claire threw off the covers and climbed onto her bed. Antony helped her find a comfortable lying position before moving the IV into place.
"If he was going to leave eventually, why did he kick me out?" he muttered in displeasure.
“Maybe he thinks that I'm better off here alone.” Claire replied casually. Antony again looked at her with a furrowed brow. Claire shrugged her shoulders. “What I've heard is that you men can judge each other. So I think Gladwin's radar about you was negative from the start. That's why he kicked you out .” Claire replied simply.
"What does that mean?"
Claire looked straight at Antony. "Gladwin said that there are only two kinds of men in this world. One is a fag, two is an asshole. So since he knows you're not a fag, he obviously thinks you're an asshole." Claire replied in a flat tone.
Antony was stunned by this. "Me? Asshole?" He pointed at himself. Claire nodded. "If I'm an asshole then what is he?"
Claire again shrugged. "Same asshole." She replied still flatly. "That's why he forbade you to be here. Because as a fellow bastard, he knows what the other bastards will do."
"Claire, that language of yours is really bad to hear!" Antony reprimanded.
Again, Claire just shrugged her shoulders. "I'm just saying what I heard." She replied casually.
Antony chose to sit on the bed and face Claire. He slowly placed his hands on both sides of Claire's body. His eyes looked at Claire sharply. One eyebrow was raised as well as the corner of his mouth, showing a smile that gave Claire goosebumps.
"And you know, when you say what you know, I want to realize all that." He said in a growling tone.
Afraid? Not at all. Because instead of retreating, Claire showed her sweet smile. Her right index finger lifted up and touched the man's chest. She deliberately made a circular motion. While her eyes looked at Antony without blinking.
"But sorry, sir." She said in a teasing tone. "I'm not interested at all." And with full force she pushed Antony's chest.
Antony chuckled, backed away and chose to get off the bed. In his heart, he really wanted to realize what he had just said. But he still had to restrain himself.
Wait until Claire willingly gives herself up, he said to himself. He looked at Claire with a smile on his face.
"Whereas other girls will invade me without my invitation." The man teased. "But you," he continued as he corrected the position of Claire's blanket that was pulled by him. "You rejected me so blatantly."
Claire shrugged again. "Sorry, I don't want to be a 'used' item." She replied casually.
Antony chuckled and nodded in understanding. He rubbed the head of Claire who was already lying on her pillow. "You're good at it." His praise was sincere. Claire just stared at him silently. "Go to sleep." He commanded softly.
"Where will you sleep, sir?" Asked Claire doubtfully.
Antony pointed at the sofa with his chin. "I think that sofa will still fit me." He said casually. Claire nodded. "Unless you're willing to share and invite me onto that tiny bed." He teased again. Claire narrowed her eyes in annoyance. Antony just chuckled. "You know, my businessman side is struggling right now." Antony said again. Claire raised one eyebrow in confusion. "Taking a chance when the opportunity arises." He pointed at Claire. "You're the one who is sick, weak and can't do anything." He continued in a teasing tone. Claire widened her eyes and reflexively hit the man's arm.
"Don't mess with me, sir!"
Antony laughed. "Not any kind, just one kind." He replied. "Or maybe, later when I'm asleep you'll take the initiative to do things to me?"
Claire spluttered. Choosing to turn her body to face him. Antony laughed again but he returned to adjusting the position of Claire's blanket. His hand rubbed her head again and for a moment, Claire felt his lips on the side of her head before Antony spoke the words. "Good night, don't forget to pray." And walked away.
Inevitably, a smile was etched on Claire's face which disappeared when she had completely drifted off to sleep.
In the early morning, when Claire woke up, she heard Antony asking for permission to go back to his house for a while to pick up a new stock of clothes and promising to bring Claire a home-made breakfast later. Claire just nodded her head and went back to sleep. But at around seven in the morning, she woke up again. At first he thought the noises in the room were because Antony had returned. But she was quite surprised because it was not Antony, but her eldest brother, Richard."Brother?" Claire asked hoarsely. Her brother who was standing beside her bed turned his head. "When did you come?" She asked again after clearing her throat."Just now." Richard replied casually. Her eldest brother helped Claire to sit down. "Where's Gladwin?" He asked again."Gladwin?" Claire frowned. Richard nodded his head towards the sofa where Antony's old pillow lay. "Be back in a minute." Claire replied ambiguously. "Who told you that I was here?" Claire asked again."Abigail." Richard replied briefly.
Richard shook his head. "Don't be stupid, I'm not that petty." Richard snarled in exasperation. "I'm not concerned about your past or your daughter. Whoever Claire's future husband is, whether he's a widower or a bachelor, whether he's young or as old as you are, as long as Claire loves that man and wants to live with him I won't mind. After all, I know your character well enough and I know your family well enough. And if you still have the same character as Antony from our high school days, I will approve of your relationship while your failure," Richard shrugged, "everyone has their own storyline." he continued firmly. Both Claire and Antony breathed a sigh of relief at Richard's words. But it didn't last long as Richard then continued."The problem here is her." He pointed at Claire. "Our mother has brought a future husband for her."Now it's Claire and Antony who are shocked by Richard's statement."What do you mean?" Claire asked confused."Didn't Gladwin tell you?" Richard asked
In the afternoon, the commotion Gladwin had predicted really happened. Claire's mother came along with Claire's second brother and also her sister-in-law. Luckily, Antony wasn't there because Claire had sent him off to work shortly after Richard's resignation.Claire tried to act natural, as if she had no idea what her mother was planning when she walked in without knocking."Why didn't you tell me you were sick?" Asked her mother who immediately came over and took a look at Claire's condition."I'm fine, the doctor said that I can go home tomorrow." Claire replied flatly. Her second brother also came closer and touched her forehead."Are you really okay now?" He asked with concern.Claire nodded her head in response. "I know I'm the prettiest and most adorable child so when I got sick you guys were really worried about me. But there's really no need for you to fly for hours to see my condition." She said deliberately joking. Her sister-in-law just gave her typical soft smile."Your s
"How would I know, why don't you ask Richard directly?" Gladwin replied still in his casual manner."You all must be losing your minds. Especially you, Claire!" her mother said in a high tone. "How could you want to have a relationship with a man fifteen years older than you? No matter how handsome he is, how rich he is, you should be able to think clearly. Especially since he's a widower. His child is even the same age as your niece.""Then where is the problem?" Gladwin interjected."The thing is, where do you want to put my face?" asked Julie unhappily."Still in your head, where else?" Gladwin joked again. But Julie's glare silenced him."You are my only daughter. The youngest in our family. You are young, you are beautiful and more than that you are intelligent. You should get a single man who is not far from your age. Someone who has an established life, from a respected family."What will our extended family say if they find out you chose a widower? Everyone will think that you
Moments before the commotion in Claire's room happened.Antony tried to finish his work as quickly as he could so that he could return to the hospital as soon as possible. Arriving at the hospital, he accidentally saw Gladwin who was standing still quite far from the direction of Claire's room with a bag of food in his hand. Antony was about to greet his lover's twin out loud, but when he saw Gladwin's serious expression, Antony chose to see where the man's gaze was."Is there something?" Asked Antony in a low voice as he neared the man.Gladwin turned his head and his expression was clearly shocked when he saw Antony. "Are you some kind of ghost?" Protested the man who was younger than him with a furrowed brow. "Why are you back here so soon?" the question was still a protest.Antony didn't know what the problem was. Instead he raised one eyebrow, giving Gladwin a strange look."Didn't you say that you have an evening schedule? So I deliberately came here early so that you could get
Claire was still frozen in place. Staring blankly at the door where her mother and siblings had just left. Is this when the test of their relationship begins? She asked herself silently. Could she succeed in living according to her choice, like what happened to Harry? Or would she have to end up following her mother's wishes like Richard did?But before she could answer his question. The door to the room opened again and revealed the man they had been talking about."What took you so long, where have you been?" Gladwin, who saw Antony's appearance, immediately joked. It was as if he and the man had never met before."Sorry. I have an important meeting at the office." Antony's answer was more to Claire. Claire just nodded and smiled."Brother, can I go home already?" Claire asked her twin brother.Gladwin frowned. "Why, you don't feel at home here? Do you want to go home so you can be alone with him?" Gladwin asked again with his eyes squinting suspiciously. Claire chuckled but then sh
"Have you eaten?" She asked the two teenage girls. Abigail shook her head, as did Flavia. "Order food online, I'm hungry." Claire asked again."Is it okay to buy food from outside?" Abigail asked "Aren't you not allowed to eat carelessly?"Claire shook her head. "I know myself too, Abby. Eating chicken won't put me into a coma. Never mind, just order it." She asked again. But before Abigail could order. Antony looked at the door from outside. "Do you want to eat here or eat outside?" He asked."You were eavesdropping, huh?" Abigail looked at her best friend's father with narrowed eyes. Antony looked at Abigail confused. "Never mind, ignore it." Abigail replied incoherently. "What do you have?" Shee then got up and took Flavia with her."I don't have anything. That's why I asked. Do you want to eat here or outside?" Antony replied flatly.Claire chuckled. It seemed like Abigail had an overly suspicious nature. "I thought you were offering but you actually asked. Aunty wants to eat chic
Antony went to the address Richard had sent him, a cafe not too far from Claire's residence.A waitress on reception duty greeted him as he stepped into the café. "How many people is it for?" She asked kindly."I have an appointment with someone. Is the table reserved in the name of Richard Hampton?" She asked the waitress. For a moment, the young girl looked at the screen in front of her and then still with a friendly smile mentioned the table number and location. Not wanting to waste much time, Antony walked towards the place the waitress had mentioned.A young man whose age Antony guessed was not far from Gladwin and Claire was sitting with a cup of coffee in front of him. Without further ado, Antony immediately sat down in front of him."Mr. Hampton?" Asked the man with a frown on his forehead. Perhaps he was thinking to himself 'why does the figure of Richard in front of me bear no facial resemblance to Harry.' At least that's what Antony thought."Antony." Antony replied without
The two teenagers turned their heads simultaneously towards the aisle as they saw an ominous aura spread around them. Moreover, people were now looking in the same direction. Where the woman Flavia and Abigail had not expected to see had just appeared."Why is that woman there?" Abigail whispered to her best friend.Flavia who had been engrossed in her digital camera and taking pictures was now holding it languidly. "I don't know." She replied innocently. She looked back at the photo produced by her hand, choosing to ignore Abigail and her suspicions."Shall we go closer to them?" Abigail asked in a challenged tone.Flavia raised her head again and looked at her best friend with a furrowed brow. As Abigail started to take a step, Flavia held her back by holding Abigail's arm tightly and shaking her head."No, Abby." She said.Instead, she pulled her best friend's hand to walk away from the reception room and left the hall by walking in the hotel's garden area to take some photos as a
"Full?" asked Claire with a furrowed brow.Antony deliberately re-emphasized his lower body so that Claire was wide-eyed. "You know what I mean, right?" Antony whispered in the girl's ear that inevitably made Claire shudder in horror. The man's lips teased her, starting to caress the side of her face so that she unconsciously looked up and gave him the opportunity to explore the slender recesses of her neck."Can I ask for my rights now?" he asked in a pleading tone.Claire shook her head."Why again now?" Antony asked in a whining tone."Your body stinks," Claire said as she wrinkled her nose. "Go take a shower." She ordered as she turned Antony around and pushed him into her room until he reached her bathroom.Antony wanted to resist, but seeing his wife's glare, he finally went in.What's wrong with his wife. Why is it so hard to conquer her? Instead of spending time kissing hot and wet, Claire pushed him into the shower. Antony had hoped they would move on to the next stage that h
"Those two women were the answer to my mother's prayers," she said, anger flaring in her voice.Antony was taken aback. "No, darling. Your mother's prayers will never be answered like that.""Alright, they did come with certain intentions. But can't you see me? To me, they are nobody. In my eyes, in my heart, in my mind, there is only Claire, Claire, and Claire. There's no other woman." Antony coaxed her in a soothing tone.Claire couldn't help but chuckle at that. "Don't sweet-talk me," she replied with a hint of amusement.Antony shook his head. He stepped closer to his wife. Claire still had her arms crossed over her chest, and to maintain some distance from him, she leaned her body back."I'm not sweet-talking you, darling. I'm speaking the truth. If only there were experts who could read my mind and heart, you could ask them. I'm sure they would tell you the truth. And if they lied, I would bribe them to say what I want them to say," Antony said again.Claire rolled her eyes. Ant

Antony stopped his car outside Claire's house and unlocked the gate with the spare key he had kept for a long time.Claire's car hadn't moved from its spot. It was still there since the last time Antony visited his fiancée's home, before Claire's family took her back.Who knows? Maybe Claire could hear the gate opening or maybe not. But one thing was clear: his wife did not welcome him at all because Claire's house felt eerily silent. Was Gladwin playing a trick on him? Who knows if Claire was really back at her house. He opened the front door and stepped inside, greeting her. Once again, there was no response. When Antony noticed Claire's bedroom door slightly ajar, he walked in.Claire wasn't there. All that was left was the small suitcase she had brought from the hotel room."Claire, sweetheart," Antony called out again, but still, there was no answer.Could it be that Claire left again after dropping off her suitcase and saw Gladwin leave? he wondered to himself.Antony continued
Quickly, Anastasia ran after Antony. She called his name repeatedly, but Antony chose to ignore her until her stiletto heels finally brought her close to him. She immediately reached out and grabbed Antony's arm, but he harshly brushed her off."Antony, listen to me. Please. I'm really sorry. I apologize," she said in a whiny tone. The woman tried to grab Antony's hand again, but he pushed her away once more, causing her to fall and kneel on the cold marble floor. Not wanting to give up, Anastasia wrapped her arms around Antony's legs, forcing him to stop."I'm truly sorry," she pleaded again, her voice desperate. She begged for the man's compassion, finally realizing that everything Antony had said in the room earlier was no joke. "I... I..." She couldn't find the words. "I'm sorry, please forgive me," she begged, tears starting to wet her face.Antony looked down at her with a sharp gaze. "Do you realize that what you're doing has crossed the line?" he asked in his cold tone.Anasta
Antony arrived at a luxurious five-star hotel located not too far from his family's hotel. As soon as he parked his car, he headed straight to the room Letizia had mentioned when he contacted his cousin earlier.Inside the lavish room rented by his ex-wife sat Antony's mother, Brianna Quirino, alongside her husband, Mr. Arthur. Meanwhile, Letizia stood with her hip leaning against the bar chair, her arms crossed over her chest.Don't ask where her children and husband were. Antony guessed that his sister-in-law was waiting for them somewhere. The three family members displayed different expressions, surely with different thoughts filled with questions that might mirror what was in Antony's own mind.On the other side of the room, right above the sofa facing away from the window, two women sat side by side. One was Anastasia, a woman he had pretended to date for work purposes. The other was his ex-wife, the woman he once loved deeply, who had given him a beautiful and devoted daughter.
But then Claire tried to clear her mind. She refused to believe that her mother could be so cruel to her; if that were the case, Claire might end up resenting her mother for the rest of her life.Disloyal? She didn't care about that word. Her face was already free of makeup, and her hair had been released from the beautiful tiara she had worn earlier. Now, the makeup artists helped Claire start to unbutton the lovely gown she had worn, which had so many buttons down the back.Once everything was removed, Claire opened her suitcase, searching for clothes. She decided to clean herself up in the bathroom that was in the dressing room.Feeling refreshed after showering and washing her hair, Claire put on the clothes she had chosen: a pair of jeans and a loose shirt instead of the dress Antony had picked out for her to wear on their honeymoon, which they were supposed to take right after the reception she was now reluctant to attend. No, she wouldn't just surrender herself to her husband a
The events proceeded according to the instructions from the host.Happy? Of course, Claire was happy. Especially seeing Bella's silly antics, who didn't hesitate to liven up the event alongside Gladwin and some of his office friends invited to the wedding, which surprised them as well. After all, Claire's absence from the office had already been quite shocking, and now they were suddenly presented with news of a wedding they had never seen any signs of."I had my suspicions when our big boss showed up at my wedding, and it turns out he was after the cheese in the sandwich," Chand whispered when his friend arrived with his wife. Claire could only smile in response to that accusatory remark.A snippet of the song that Adaline was singing on stage made Claire and Antony hold hands tightly, hoping that no obstacles would disturb them in the future.Guests began to dwindle. Amidst welcoming guests, they also took several photo sessions—not just with colleagues but also to capture moments w
