After my discussion with Alpha Calixto and his Beta, I headed straight for home. I chose to avoid the main streets as much as possible, wary of accidentally encountering anyone along the way.
I cursed myself internally as I hurried through the dimly lit alleys. How could I have been so reckless? Not only would I likely become the subject of gossip over the coming weeks, but I had also managed to inadvertently bind myself to one of the most feared and notorious Alphas in our community. That sobering thought was enough to clear my mind almost instantly.
As I navigated the expansive grounds and slipped into my home, I closed the side entrance door as quietly as possible, keen not to draw attention to my late arrival.
Voices filled with laughter echoed from one of the drawing rooms as I crept by. My face hardened when I recognized the familiar voices of my stepsister and stepmother, along with the occasional comment from my father.
A painful twist gripped my heart as the realization sank in that I felt completely disconnected from my once-loving father. With a resigned sigh, I continued down the hallway, clutching the bunched-up fabric of my wedding dress tightly to my chest. I had just reached the bottom of the grand staircase when the drawing room door behind me was suddenly thrown open, crashing against the wall with a loud bang that echoed through the corridors.
I jumped slightly, freezing in place as the overly sweet and familiar voice of my stepsister Eve reached my ears.
"Oh! Mom! Dad! Look who finally decided to come home!" Eve called out with exaggerated surprise, directing her words over her shoulder to the others. "I didn't even realize Anastasia was out! And just look at the time! The night before her wedding, no less! What will people say?" she gasped, clearly putting on a show for their benefit.
I spun around furiously, fixing Eve with a narrowed glare.
"Oh my! Look at your dress!" she exclaimed loudly. "It's completely ruined! How on earth do you plan to wear that for the ceremony tomorrow?"
Eve stopped in front of me, folding her arms as she surveyed my rumpled appearance with disdain.
I snorted quietly and leaned in to whisper in Eve's ear. "No wonder Brent couldn't wait to be with me, just look at the state of you," she sneered.
I clenched my fingers into fists, struggling to hold back Maine from lunging at Eve and making things worse.
'Don't just stand there and take this; that brat needs to learn her place. Let me teach her a lesson she'll remember,' Maine growled angrily.
'Maine, we can't. She doesn't have a wolf yet. You know the laws; it wouldn't be a fair fight, and the punishment—'
'Forget the punishment, Anastasia, let me just bite her a bit, maybe remove one of her limbs. At least then she'd have fewer appendages to cling to other people's mates,' she snapped viciously, trying to push forward.
I closed my eyes tightly, clenched my jaw, and wrestled against my wolf as Eve snickered.
"Awww, what's wrong? Is your little wolf angry?"
It didn't take long for me to regain control, with my wolf slinking off to sulk in a corner, growling menacingly. Soon enough, her rage subsided, leaving silence in its wake. I opened my eyes to glare icily at Eve.
"What do you think, Eve? You slept with my soulmate, the one who was destined to be my perfect match. I know you despise me, but that was uncalled for," I finally replied, my face calm and composed.
Eve frowned before her expression darkened, twisting into an ugly mask of spiteful anger.
"Unnecessary? I thought it was quite necessary. If only to show that I'll always be better than you. You parade around here thinking you're little Miss Perfect. Mark my words, Anastasia, I'll see to it that you're left with nothing by the time I'm through. I'm sick of living in your shadow," she hissed furiously.
"Anastasia! What is the meaning of this?! Why were you out so late?!" a slimy, sickly sweet voice called out.
Nerissa, my stepmother, emerged from the drawing room with my father close behind.
Reluctantly, I tore my gaze away from Eve and refocused on Nerissa. We stared at each other while Eve sauntered to her mother's side, tilting her head arrogantly as she faced me again.
"I needed to clear my head," I finally answered flatly, feeling like a spectacle on display with everyone's attention directed at me.
"Oh, but your dress came! How lovely!" Nerissa simpered, a poisonous smile playing on her lips.
"I'm surprised you didn't rush down to flaunt your new dress to your father before vanishing into the night doing who knows what," Nerissa continued with a flippant tone, her eyes gleaming with malice. I couldn't stifle my response and ended up snorting loudly.
"Parents? You've got it wrong... don't you mean parent? My mother passed away a long time ago, and you're not worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as her memory," I replied coolly.
Nerissa gasped, covering her mouth in mock horror as she turned towards my father with a look of feigned distress.
"You ungrateful child! How can you speak to your stepmother like that?!" my father blustered, his voice tinged with anger.
"Because she's like the wicked stepmothers you read about in fairy tales. She doesn't belong in this family," I said simply, tired of upholding the charade of a happy family. A family should be warm and inviting, offering comfort and security, not cold and unfriendly, forcing you to constantly watch your back without support.
His temper flared as he lashed out at the wall beside him before angrily advancing toward me, growling a warning. Eve rushed over, grabbing his arm and casting a sly smirk in my direction as she put on the false appearance of restraining him.
"Dad! Please! Calm down! Don't be upset! It's okay, we're used to her comments," Eve whined insincerely.
I glared furiously at the trio as Nerissa joined her daughter in this pathetic pretense of familial concern. How could my father not see through their charade?
Nerissa soothingly rubbed circles on my father's back before focusing her attention on me again. "Please, Anastasia, you know your father's health isn't great. Let's not provoke another episode with needless cruelty, hmm?" she pleaded in a syrupy sweet voice, but I didn't miss the smug smirk playing on her lips.
"You should look up to your sister's example, Anastasia. You might actually learn how to conduct yourself properly!" my father snarled.
"Learn what?" I asked incredulously, laughing bitterly. "Learn how to seduce and sleep with someone else's mate? Well, she certainly showed her talent for it when she was sleeping with my mate in her room upstairs!"
My words hung in the air, heavy and accusing, before a furious roar erupted from my father.
"How dare you speak about your sister that way?! There's no way she did something so despicable!"
"Sister? Have you lost your mind, Father? My mother only had one child," I sneered, casting a disdainful glance at Nerissa and Eve."You know, there's a saying that fits perfectly here... 'The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.' It describes both Nerissa and Eve, wouldn't you agree? Her mother seduced my father and shattered his mate's heart, and now her daughter is aiming for the same. Ironic, isn't it?" I continued heatedly, my face shadowed by contempt.A cold silence fell over the hallway as my father, Nerissa, and Eve stood frozen in shock. For years, I had kept silent, but with my life on the cusp of a major change, there was no need to maintain the pretense any longer. The stunned silence lasted only a few seconds before my father erupted in fury, shouting incoherently as Eve and Nerissa struggled to calm him down. I watched their frantic attempts with an emotionless detachment. It was about time they faced a few hard truths."Anastasia, that's enough! You've gone too far! J
I awoke with a jolt, startled by the relentless vibration of my phone on the bedside table. My heart was pounding wildly, rattled by the sudden disturbance from my sleep. I fumbled around in a daze, trying to locate the annoying device with my blurry vision. Finally, my fingers closed around the familiar surface of my phone, and I hastily checked the caller ID. The name of my cheating ex, Brent, flashed across the screen. Narrowing my eyes, I pressed the reject button, tossing the phone aside and flopping back onto the bed. The display showed 32 missed calls and a stream of messages across SMS and social media from him. I snorted derisively.Turning my head to the side, I scanned my room. A wry smile crept onto my face when my gaze landed on the crumpled wedding dress in the corner. I was supposed to be getting married today... a day I had dreamed of and meticulously planned for years, shattered in mere moments. My phone vibrated noisily in my hand again, displaying yet another call f
"But... but... the alliance..." my father stammered anxiously."There's no reason it can't be secured with Eve taking my place. Brent will never be king, but considering both his and Eve's deceitful nature—as proven by their actions—and his treatment of his fated mate, I doubt the Council of Elders would approve of his ascension to the throne anyway," I smirked, turning to leave."Wait! Anastasia... where are you going?" my father called, genuine concern coloring his voice.I smiled bitterly, turning to face him one last time."I've made other arrangements. They shouldn't impact you much, but I'll be gone for a few years. I may come back to collect my things, or I might send someone in my stead. Either way, take care of yourself, Father. I'll see you when I return... if I return..."With a final sharp glance at the sound of my father's protests and Nerissa's shrill reprimands directed at Eve, I made my way swiftly to my car. Once the door closed behind me, the fierce exterior shattere
I arrived at the café we had chosen before Leah did. I secured a table by the window, ready for some casual people-watching, and ordered a chai tea while I waited. Although the weather hadn't fully shifted into the autumnal season I loved, the rich aroma of the milky chai tea evoked a homey, almost Christmassy sensation. Secretly, I was panicking. I had left my home to move in with a man I knew only by reputation and was about to M him for the next five years. I craved the security that the feeling of home provided, and the memories that the smell of chai tea stirred were the closest I would ever get to feeling my mother's comforting embrace again.I was acutely aware of the glances from other café patrons, which made me slightly uncomfortable. Just then, I spotted Leah jumping out of a taxi through the window, hurrying inside. She stood in the doorway, squinting as her striking golden eyes scanned the faces rapidly until they found mine. Her face broke into a huge grin, and she wave
I chuckled. "Let's eat first, Leah. I'm starving. Let's order, and I'll fill you in on everything."As we ate, I explained how my chance meeting with the notorious alpha came about. I was careful not to mention the curse on him or the unknown threat he faced, but I felt comfortable sharing at least this much with Leah. I intended to take the secret to my grave if needed, rather than betray those I considered family. When we finished our meal, Leah sat back contemplatively, massaging her stomach as she eyed the desserts on display at the counter with greed."You can't possibly have room for more!" I exclaimed incredulously."Is that a challenge?" Leah gasped with mock horror. "Because it sounds very much like a challenge. Very well! I accept," she declared, answering her own question as she stood and hurried over to choose a dessert.I snorted loudly as I rummaged through my bag, trying to find my phone, which was ringing incessantly. I had forgotten to silence the ringer, and once aga
Brent growled quietly, turning his head slowly as he felt the weight of numerous narrowed gazes on him. He took a deep breath, rolling his shoulders to release tension and running a hand through his hair. Though the fury still smoldered in his eyes, he seemed to have his aggression under tighter rein."Listen, about Eve..." he began, his voice strained, but Leah cut him off with a raised hand."I don't care about your excuses, and I'm certain Anastasia doesn't want to hear them either," she snapped."Anastasia, please... just hear me out!" Brent pleaded, twisting slightly to try and catch my eye.'I think we should listen to what he has to say,' Maine suggested thoughtfully.'Seriously? You want to hear him out?' I shot back in disbelief.'Yes. Then I can decide precisely how much pain I want to inflict when I castrate both him and his cowardly wolf,' Maine snarled, baring her fangs.I sighed heavily and stood, placing a calming hand on Leah's shoulder. "It's okay, Leah. Maine wants t
Xavier remained silent for a few moments, regarding me with an unreadable expression. Then, he inclined his head gracefully. "As you wish, princess," he smirked, sharing a glance filled with hidden meaning.I felt my cheeks flush immediately, shifting awkwardly on the spot."Do you two know each other?" Brent asked suspiciously, glaring between us with narrowed eyes. I kept silent, remembering my agreement not to disclose any details about my arrangement with Alpha Calixto to anyone. It was best for him to manage any inquiries, ensuring only the information he wanted shared would be revealed. Not that I minded—the drama and gossip of the tabloids were best avoided, contrary to the belief that all press was good press.Xavier chuckled, taking my hand and pulling me to his side, spinning me slightly. I collided clumsily with his shoulder, and he wrapped his arm around me, holding me snugly.I swallowed nervously as I watched Brent's face darken with rage. He looked ready to commit mur
Once she got into the car, I turned to face Xavier and found him staring at me with a blank expression. His gaze made me feel uncomfortable, so I quickly turned away, grabbing my seat belt and pulling it over my body, fastening it as quietly as I could.Once I was done, I clasped my hands together in my lap and stared straight ahead out of the windshield, though I could still feel his eyes on me."I'm going to have my hands full with you, aren't I?" he remarked with a sigh, turning the ignition on and pulling away from the curb. That all depends on whether he plans to remove our clothes or not... Maine snickered in my mind.My cheeks flushed as I shifted awkwardly in my seat. I dreaded to think what Alpha Calixto's wolf would make of Maine.Maine was fearless, brash, and opinionated; she was nothing close to the demure partner he might expect. If he thought he was getting a doting, loving mate who never argued, he was in for a rude awakening. We drove for a while in what felt like an
