Chapter 7

Elaine spun around, her heart dropping. Yoel was standing there, his eyes like ice. "Yoel, I... I was just loosening the soil," she stammered, her face pale.

"Cut the crap, Elaine. I know everything," he said, his voice devoid of warmth.

Her knees buckled, and she collapsed to the ground. "Yoel, please, I had no choice! He tricked me into marrying him and forced me to entertain his clients to pay off his gambling debts. If I didn't kill him, I'd never be free!"

Yoel stared at her, expressionless. After a beat, he reached down and pulled her to her feet. "Let it go, Elaine. It's over. Let's move on from here."

Tears streamed down her face as she clung to him. "Thank you, Yoel. Thank you."

After a moment, she hesitated, then asked softly, "Have you heard anything about Julianna?"

Yoel's face hardened. "Don't bring her up. She's bad news. Today's your birthday. I want you to be happy."

He grabbed her hand, pulling her toward the car. "Let's get out of here. We need a change of scen
