Amanda
"Drive to the house first. I want to redo my makeup before heading to my grandparents' place, " I settled into the back seat. I clutched my stomach tenderly, now aware that I had a new life growing inside my womb. "Yes, ma'am," Anderson studied me from the mirror for some time, then added, "Will you tell Jason?" "Tell him what?" I asked absentmindedly, my hands still clutching my abdomen. Anderson looked at my hands against my abdomen and smiled sadly, "That... The baby..." "Oh!" My lips opened but no words came out. I gave out a weak grunt and smiled almost immediately. Leaning a little bit forward, I said, "I wouldn't. I have no intention of telling him. He'd never know, if not he might hurt my unborn child." Anderson stopped the car abruptly. "Why don't you leave?" He held the steering fiercely and shut his eyes, as though he were trying to remember something. Leave! I'll help you." I wondered why his voice seemed a little bit raised. Ignoring it, I said, "I can't. It's not as easy as you think." In all honesty, I couldn't leave. Jason had threatened to kill my grandparents if I dared to talk bad about our marriage or even dared to leave. I was very much sure that those weren't empty threats. He meant every word he had said. Leaving Jason and this God-forsaken marriage was the same as sending my lovely grandparents to their graves. Anderson shook his head, then turned to face me, "I don't want you to get hurt, or even lose your life, Amanda" This was the first time he referred to me by my name and not with some honorifics, "I know you're scared of your husband, but it isn't worth your life. Think about your baby. You can't risk its life, too." I pondered on his words for some time, then said, "Why do you want to help me? Don't you work for Jason? He'd have you killed if he found out. I don't want you to get involved." He laughed, and it eased the tension and awkwardness in the car a little bit. "I might work for Jason, but my loyalty is with you. People in the company don't really know who Jason is. I know him, and I don't like the way he treats you. There's nothing to like about your nonsensical husband!" He hit the steering forcefully, his face squeezing into a frown and I was startled. "Careful, now, Anderson!" "Sorry, Amanda," somehow, the fact that he suddenly switched to calling me by my name, made it seem as though we were close in a way. It was oddly comforting as I had no friends whatsoever. Jason had ensured that. "It's alright. I'll definitely call you if I need some type of help," I said in a bid to close the conversation. He drove into the compound, and I went upstairs, redid my makeup perfectly, and came back downstairs. "Let's go." This time around, I sat in front of Anderson's invitation. We said nothing to each other and there was silence, except for the "WestLife" music playing in the background. We hummed to the song, and my nerves calmed down a little bit. "We're here," he undid his seat belt, came down, and came over to my side. He opened the door for me, and I stepped down. "You're really beautiful. Jason is a big fool for being oblivious of such beauty and treating you in such a manner..." "Thank you, " I tucked a strand of her behind my ears, and smiled. Jason never called me beautiful. "Should I wait for you, here?" Before I could answer, I spotted Lena Dunham entering her car and zooming off. I was sure she didn't see me, but it bothered me that she came here. She looked in my direction and I ducked immediately. I wondered if she had seen me. ******** I remained in that position until I heard the sound of her car zooming off. Breathing a sigh of relief, I stood up. Lena Dunham! She was the reason I had decided to pay my grandparents a surprise visit, but, what was she doing here? I had a sick feeling in my stomach and I felt like throwing up. What was Lena up to? I wondered. "A penny for your thoughts,' Anderson's alluring voice interrupted my thoughts, "who's she?" "No one important," I said, waving it off momentarily. "Alright, I'll wait in the car, you can go ahead," Thank you, Anderson, I'd try not to take so much time." I headed towards the building briskly, determined to find the answers to my questions. I pushed the wooden doors open, and the smell of metal hit me strongly. I couldn't believe my sight. Laying on the floor were the almost lifeless bodies of my grandparents. I screamed and rushed out, throwing my bag, and the present I got fell on the floor without thinking. I flung my slippers away for easy movement. I ran towards the car, screaming hysterically and shouting Anderson's name as loud as I could. As I approached the car, I sprained my ankle slightly. "Anderson, help! Please, help!" I cried. Anderson hurriedly approached me, fear and surprise written all over his face. "What happened?" I tried to talk, but words failed me. I cried and pointed toward my grandparent's house. "Talk to me, Amanda, you're scaring me," but, for some reason, I couldn't still talk even though I tried to. I just kept crying and pointing. Anderson hugged me while caressing my hair all along. I hugged him tightly, refusing to let go. As if it just occurred to me, I jolted away from his embrace and dashed towards the house again. They might still be alive. Maybe they aren't dead, yet. Anderson ran after me, calling my name loudly as he ran. There was no one around, no neighbors, nobody. My grandparents lived in a bungalow on the outskirts of the city in a secluded area. They weren't exactly old, in fact, they were still young as they were still in their middle fifties. "My God!" Anderson exclaimed upon seeing my grandparents' bodies. Without further delay, he made a phone call, calling both the police and an ambulance quickly. Before the blink of an eye, I could d hear sirens right outside the compound. Men and women in uniform barged in, asking questions, while the hospital personnel took my grandparents to the hospital on a stretcher.JasonWith my hands inside my side pockets, I took long strides towards my office which was just upstairs.I reflected on the events of the previous night and a sigh escaped my lips. What a wrong timing! Lena could literely act as though she was dumb sometimes. When I finally reached the office, I opened it swiftly and entered, immediately settling down behind my working desk.I brought out my phone and checked if my wife had left me a text or if she had called, but I found nothing.Lena had been filling in as my personal assittant for as long as I can remember and I knew that she was going to walk in any moment. The door slid open and a lady in a blue suit walked in briskly. She walked up to my walking desk, then leaned in to kiss me.“Not now, Lena!”Lena jerked upwards and took a few steps backwards. She stared at me long and hard, wondering why he seemed off this morning.“Why are you here?” I ask with a calmer voice as I stared up at her from my laptop, a faraway look on my face
AmandaI woke up to the blinding splash of sunlight from the partially opened curtains. I spread out my hands in an attempt to feel for my husband, but I felt the ruffled bedspread and duvet, instead. He is not here!I breathed out a huge sigh of relief, then sat up carefully and felt for my hair bonnet. It must have fallen off while I was sleeping. The memories of last night came flooding in without a filter… Lena's abrupt visit and audacity and Jason's stinging slap against my left cheek left his imprint on my cheek. Then, his persistent advances after he had entered our bedroom last night. When I did not oblige, he forced himself on me and had his way.I tried to stand up and walk towards the dressing table but my legs felt wobbly. Hence, I took slow but calculative steps until I reached the dressing table. One look at the mirror, and I could see that the hand imprint Jason had left on my left cheek last night was gone.“Phew!” I exhaled loudly, as relief washed over me. At least t
AmandaI looked up as soon as I heard Lena's voice. How could a woman be so shameless and bold?I felt like running inside my room. I was not sure that I had the nerve to talk to Lena the way that I really wanted to. However, on second thought, I decided that I would not. “You do have guts, Lena! What are you doing in my house by this time of the night?”I stood up consciously because I didn't want it to be obvious that I was actually trembling from head to toe.Actually, my reassurance was that Suzie was in the house. I could never do this if it were just my husband, Lena, and me in the house because they would definitely not let me go scot-free.Lena's shrieking laughter brought me out of my reverie.“You are just Jason's wife in name, and you know it! Do you not have self-respect? I really can't understand why you are still in this marriage when it is clear that my man does not love you,” Lena finished in one breath. She flipped her hair backward, and I could see the heavy makeup s
Jason “I'm sorry, Suzie, truly, I am,” The doctor started and I could feel a smile begin to form at the corners of my mouth, but I struggled to appear neutral and emotionless throughout. The doctor leaned forward a little bit until her clasped hands were resting on the table, directly in front of her. She tapped on the table slowly, as though she was trying to show off her well-polished, beautiful nails. We sat a few meters away from her, just directly opposite her.“We tried everything we could, but Mark couldn't make it,” She finished off in one breath. It seemed as though she was avoiding making eye contact with either of us.I looked sideways at my sister. I couldn't tell what she was thinking or feeling, because she didn't wear her emotions on her face. I looked down at her hands which she placed on her thighs, and noticed that they were trembling. She tried to steady them by pressing on her fingers and taking deep breaths, but it seemed those hands had minds of their own.“Than
Amanda The moment Jason and I walked into the house, the sweet aroma of dumplings wafted through my nose. I knew instantly that my sister-in-law was in the kitchen. Suzie came out, so I dropped my bag on the chair and went into her open arms in an embrace.“Why are you wearing such a long face?” She asked me.“I am very tired, Suzie,” I said. “I just want to have a hot bath, eat, and go to bed. I had a very long day.”“Yeah, you are right,” Suzie said. “I'll make you and my brother, Jason, some snacks to eat, first. Just go and freshen up, first, okay?”“So, you can see me, after all?” I heard Jason say as I walked up the stairs to my room.I hurriedly pulled off my clothes and kept them in the basket. I planned on doing the laundry the next day.Next, I removed my jewelry carefully and dropped it in one of my cute little jewelry boxes. When I was finally fully undressed, I entered the beautifully colored and scented bathtub and lowered myself until the water was at the length of m
SuzieI couldn't believe my eyes. I pinched myself lightly to be sure that I wasn't dreaming, and I felt a slight pain on the spot.I looked sideways and noticed that my brother was observing me closely. It looked as though blood drained from his face because he looked unusually pale. His eyes kept darting here and there as though he was looking for reassurance that I would be fine.“Did you invite him over?”My brother asked me.“No, I didn't,” I replied. “I didn't even give him the address of this place. I'm as shocked as you are, Jason.”… But then, the voice from the door interrupted us.“P– pl— please, th– the door,” the person at the door slurred. Jason and I exchanged quick glances before Jason checked the door again.“I don't know… it feels as though he were hurt or something.” I felt a painful churn in my stomach, and my legs felt wobbly.“S– Suz– Suzie, pl– please, help me!” With my heart on my sleeve, I didn't think twice before I brought the passkey and opened the door.H
