Amanda
We drove to the company in silence. Jason had an important meeting to attend. The driver was going to drop him off, then take me to my grandparents. I wanted to see them as soon as possible, else, I would go crazy with thinking and worrying. "What's on your mind?" Jason looked up from his phone and stared at me emotionlessly. I had not yet recovered from the shock of his sudden desire to make reckless love to me a few hours ago, but the thoughts of Lena occupied my mind and kept me from dwelling on it. "Nothing," I smiled wryly, hoping he'd let the conversation die, because I was in no mood for a chit-chat, especially not with him. "You've met Lena, haven't you? Why aren't you asking me anything?" I wondered why he was bringing Lena up. I had clearly avoided having any conversation concerning her with him. "I have nothing to ask," I said briefly, not bothering to look at him. "You're learning to mind your business," he laughed, throwing his hand with abandon, then, he took my hand and squeezed it, as though he were trying to hurt me. Well, he succeeded, "Pay no attention to us, just play your roles as a good housewife. After all, that was the reason I married you." I struggled to free myself from his painful grip, and when I didn't succeed, I bit him hard, which made him scream in pain. The driver looked back momentarily but continued to drive. If he had interfered, he'd lose his job for sure. Jason grabbed my neck with his two hands after he had recovered from the shock and pain of the bite. It was the first time I had retaliated to his violence. I didn't know what gave me such courage, but I was thankful for it. I gasped for air, flailing my arms and begging with my eyes to be released, but Jason wasn't having any of it, "It seems you've grown wings, Amanda," he pressed harder, "you now challenge your husband, you filthy thing," his face was scrunched up, and his lips were pursed with determination. He was clearly disgusted. "I wouldn't have any of this, anymore," he said, and continued, "Today, I'd kill you and send you to your dear father," I noticed that the driver had stopped by the side of the road, but I knew that he was too scared to help me. He wouldn't just lose his job if he did, Jason would also do everything to ruin his life, generally. "J_Ja," I gasped for air. I could see my own death right before my eyes." "Shut up, you bitch!" He repositioned himself on top of me in the car, making sure we were both lying down, and then he kissed me, licking my tears, and smiling sinisterly, while still choking me as though his life depended on it. There was a knock on the car door, and Jason left me immediately. He quickly used a scarf that had been lying carelessly in the car to cover my mouth as I coughed vigorously, struggling to catch my breath, but I could barely notice. I was sinking into oblivion, and I was vaguely aware of my surroundings… "Open this door, Sir," a man's voice rang out from the driver's window, but Jason wasn't having it. I felt him inject me with something. Whatever it was caused me to be unconscious immediately, because I was unaware of my surroundings, instantly. ******** I woke up with a slight headache, hungry as ever! I was about to get down and go and freshen up when I noticed the driver still sleeping with his head bent slightly at the edge of the bed. That was when it hit me. I was at the hospital! Everything that had happened hours ago, in the morning, flooded into my memory. I must have slept for a long time because the room curtains were raised up, and it was very dark outside. As I made to step down from the bed, the driver woke up. "Ma'am, you're up,' he sighed with relief, and I could see that he must have been very worried. My makeup had been cleaned off, and there were obvious bruises on my face and neck, "how are you feeling?" He helped me up and I sat upright on the bed, just a few meters away from him. He held on to my hands as though his life depended on it. It was the first time I paid keen attention to him. I didn't know his name yet, but I had resolved to quit being passive about the people who worked for Jason. I needed to understand what was really going on. The driver looked to be in his early thirties. He had on a white designer's T-shirt and blue jeans. He wasn't as hairy as Jason, but he had a beautiful face, you could almost mistake him for a lady, easily. He had the beauty of a woman and he looked pretty delicate. "What's your name?" "Anderson," he said and adjusted properly on his seat, "you've been asleep for twelve hours. I had to step out to get changed and get you something to eat at some point." He was sweet and very kind, but I wasn't sure if it was all right to trust him. Maybe Jason put him up to this… "I know what you're thinking," he said gently, "but Jason didn't ask me to do anything. He actually told me to take you to the hospital and return to the company shortly after; however, I couldn't. You needed someone by your side." I smiled weakly and felt a sharp pain in my neck. "I'll get the Doctor," Said Anderson who returned right after with a middle-aged woman trailing after him. "How are you feeling? You were unconscious for some time," she took my hand and felt my pulse while looking at her wristwatch. "I'm fine, Doctor," I said, trying to fake a smile. "What happened?" She persisted, "What brought you to the hospital?" "Well, she..." Anderson began to talk, but I cut him short abruptly. "I'd rather not talk about it, ma'am," I said, hoping she'd let the matter die. "You're covered in bruises young lady. Were you involved in a fight, or did someone beat you up?" "Doctor, I'm fine. If you think I'm better and it's safe for me to go, then I would leave first thing tomorrow morning." Seeing that I wasn't going to give in and talk to her, she stopped trying. Her eyes darted to my stomach and she said, "Are you aware that you are pregnant? You're probably some days gone. You should be careful. You don't want to lose your baby. You can leave in the morning. I'll give you some drugs and ointment before you leave." Pregnant? How? How can it be? The last thing I wanted was to be pregnant with Jason's baby. No! This can't be happening!Amanda "Drive to the house first. I want to redo my makeup before heading to my grandparents' place, " I settled into the back seat. I clutched my stomach tenderly, now aware that I had a new life growing inside my womb."Yes, ma'am," Anderson studied me from the mirror for some time, then added, "Will you tell Jason?""Tell him what?" I asked absentmindedly, my hands still clutching my abdomen.Anderson looked at my hands against my abdomen and smiled sadly, "That... The baby...""Oh!" My lips opened but no words came out. I gave out a weak grunt and smiled almost immediately. Leaning a little bit forward, I said, "I wouldn't. I have no intention of telling him. He'd never know, if not he might hurt my unborn child."Anderson stopped the car abruptly."Why don't you leave?" He held the steering fiercely and shut his eyes, as though he were trying to remember something. Leave! I'll help you."I wondered why his voice seemed a little bit raised. Ignoring it, I said, "I can't. It's not
Amanda, "They're still alive," The Doctor reported to us after hours spent in emergency surgery on both of them. "Thankfully, the knife didn't pierce any delicate organ. They're in a coma, as they have severe brain injury, alongside the multiple stabbing wounds found on their bodies.""When will they wake up?" That was the first word I managed to say ever since I had entered and found their almost lifeless bodies back in their house."I can't say, but there's hope. It'll take a while, but they might be able to survive this. We'd keep a close eye on them, rest assured."We thanked the doctor, stood up, and headed to the room that held the grandparents. They were oblivious to their surroundings and were very much unconscious, but it appeared they were sleeping peacefully.I felt a hand on my shoulder from behind and looked up to see who it was, "Anderson," I sighed in relief. Thank you. You've been of great help to me," I went in for another hug and cried heavily."How did this happen
Amanda Would you believe that Amanda told the Police that she thinks I'm the one that harmed her grandparents?" Lena adjusted in her seat, crossing one leg against the other, and leaning towards Jason."What?" Jason feigned surprise, "I don't understand. Why'd she do that?" "Apparently, she saw me driving out of her grandparents' compound on the day of the accident." Lena sipped on the drink that Jason had offered her, then sighed deeply."What were you doing there, though?""I actually did pay them a visit, but I walked in and found them like that, unconscious and almost dead," she said sulkily, "so I left."Why didn't you take them to the hospital? Why didn't you call the police?""If I had done that, wouldn't that have implicated me?"Jason stared at Lena, trying to read her expression, but she remained expressionless."You really didn't do it, right? As much as I despise Amanda, I don't want you harming her grandparents. That's my concern, not yours.""You're forgetting that the
Amanda Before I made up my mind to come out of my hiding place and confront my husband and his mistress, I called Anderson and told him to come over to my house in the next twenty minutes.I knew it wouldn't go well, and that Jason and Lena would end up doing something funny, if not harming me. "What's really going on, Amanda, are you in trouble?" Anderson's worried voice thundered against the phone speaker."Not yet," I replied, swallowing hard. " But, maybe, soon.""Don't do it," Anderson warned, "whatever it is you plan on doing, don't do it!""I have to, Anderson. I've been a coward for a long time. Jason doesn't respect me at all. Guess what? Lena's here.""What? Who's Lena?""The lady we saw driving out of my grandparents' place.""What's she doing there?""It's a long story. I'll fill you in later. I have to go, now.""So, you want to confront them? Aren't you scared?""I am, and that's why I called you."*. *. *. *. *Anderson had arrived at Jason's house and found my body
Jason“Yes, Anderson… You've been away from work for a couple of days without any prior notification and reason,” My voice was a little too loud over the phone as I paced to and fro in my office.“I'm sorry, sir. I had an emergency to take care of. I have been trying to reach you via calls but to no avail…”“Don't feed me such bullshit!” I hit my hand on the table as my brows knitted slightly. “There's no excuse whatsoever that can attest to your shortcomings! I'm beginning to get fed up by your inconsistencies…”“I'm very sorry, sir. It won't happen again.”I calmed down a little bit. At least he still knows who the boss is.“Come to the hospital right now!”“But sir…”“No more excuses, unless you are willing to lose your job. It seems you don't need it anymore.” There was a pause for a moment, and I could hear his ragged breathing against the speaker. I couldn't tell what was happening and what he needed to take care of urgently that had him absent for almost four days, but I would
Jason It was three days now and I had not yet seen Amanda. Not that I cared, but I hadn't eaten any proper homemade meals in days. Lena wasn't good with culinary skills, and I never really got to taste a meal she made, not that she could cook, though. But, even if I invited her over now, she wouldn't agree to see me. She hasn't even been picking up my calls, anyway. I couldn't understand where her grievances stemmed from, because I was aware that she also indulged in minor sexual affairs aside from our relationship… or so. I wasn't sure, and I had never caught her cheating on me, but anyway. I walk to the window in the sitting room. Down the road, a couple were hugging passionately, as though they hadn't seen each other in a while and just got back together. It made me remember those days when my love with Lena was still young and fresh. I feel a vibration in my pocket and bring out my phone. The name “little sis,” was boldly written on the screen. Letting out a deep sigh, I swi
Jason I came to work earlier today. I sent Lena a message, telling her that I wanted her to be my Personal Assistant. In reality, I was looking for ways to mend our relationship and keep us nearby. My phone buzzed, and I stared at the phone for the umpteenth time, hoping I would get a reply from her.It wasn't her though. Instead, my eyes caught the news headlines peeping out of my phone… “Billionaire idol beats up a poor man for touching his mistress,” I cringed at the title. These journalists would do anything to make extra cash. The headline wasn't exactly false, but how did these people know that he's been having an affair with Lena Dunham? My mouth dropped wide open, and I zoomed in to confirm and it was just as I thought. I brought out another phone from my breast pocket immediately and put a call across. I was panting quite loudly and I found it quite difficult to stabilize my breathing.“There's false news circulating on the internet. Please, bring it down this instant and st
AmandaI turned restlessly on my bed and I throbbed badly with each turn I made. Finally, I woke up with a scream, “Anderson!”I looked around in hopes of finding him, but he was nowhere to be seen. I sit up carefully and pick up my phone from the small desk at my bedside.I was better now, and the doctor said I was free to go home in the next 12 hours. It was 6pm already and I wondered how long I slept.I unlock my phone, and a message immediately pops up on my screen: “Hello love, I'm sorry I had to leave quickly without informing you. Jason called and demanded I resume working at the company immediately. There are also penalties I'm to face for not notifying him on those days that I was absent from work, but do not worry about that…“I hope you're feeling much better right now. Don't worry, I didn't tell Jason anything about your whereabouts, even though he kept on asking. I'll be there first thing tomorrow morning as early as possible. I would definitely come with your favorite sn
AmandaI woke up to the blinding splash of sunlight from the partially opened curtains. I spread out my hands in an attempt to feel for my husband, but I felt the ruffled bedspread and duvet, instead. He is not here!I breathed out a huge sigh of relief, then sat up carefully and felt for my hair bonnet. It must have fallen off while I was sleeping. The memories of last night came flooding in without a filter… Lena's abrupt visit and audacity and Jason's stinging slap against my left cheek left his imprint on my cheek. Then, his persistent advances after he had entered our bedroom last night. When I did not oblige, he forced himself on me and had his way.I tried to stand up and walk towards the dressing table but my legs felt wobbly. Hence, I took slow but calculative steps until I reached the dressing table. One look at the mirror, and I could see that the hand imprint Jason had left on my left cheek last night was gone.“Phew!” I exhaled loudly, as relief washed over me. At least t
AmandaI looked up as soon as I heard Lena's voice. How could a woman be so shameless and bold?I felt like running inside my room. I was not sure that I had the nerve to talk to Lena the way that I really wanted to. However, on second thought, I decided that I would not. “You do have guts, Lena! What are you doing in my house by this time of the night?”I stood up consciously because I didn't want it to be obvious that I was actually trembling from head to toe.Actually, my reassurance was that Suzie was in the house. I could never do this if it were just my husband, Lena, and me in the house because they would definitely not let me go scot-free.Lena's shrieking laughter brought me out of my reverie.“You are just Jason's wife in name, and you know it! Do you not have self-respect? I really can't understand why you are still in this marriage when it is clear that my man does not love you,” Lena finished in one breath. She flipped her hair backward, and I could see the heavy makeup s
Jason “I'm sorry, Suzie, truly, I am,” The doctor started and I could feel a smile begin to form at the corners of my mouth, but I struggled to appear neutral and emotionless throughout. The doctor leaned forward a little bit until her clasped hands were resting on the table, directly in front of her. She tapped on the table slowly, as though she was trying to show off her well-polished, beautiful nails. We sat a few meters away from her, just directly opposite her.“We tried everything we could, but Mark couldn't make it,” She finished off in one breath. It seemed as though she was avoiding making eye contact with either of us.I looked sideways at my sister. I couldn't tell what she was thinking or feeling, because she didn't wear her emotions on her face. I looked down at her hands which she placed on her thighs, and noticed that they were trembling. She tried to steady them by pressing on her fingers and taking deep breaths, but it seemed those hands had minds of their own.“Than
Amanda The moment Jason and I walked into the house, the sweet aroma of dumplings wafted through my nose. I knew instantly that my sister-in-law was in the kitchen. Suzie came out, so I dropped my bag on the chair and went into her open arms in an embrace.“Why are you wearing such a long face?” She asked me.“I am very tired, Suzie,” I said. “I just want to have a hot bath, eat, and go to bed. I had a very long day.”“Yeah, you are right,” Suzie said. “I'll make you and my brother, Jason, some snacks to eat, first. Just go and freshen up, first, okay?”“So, you can see me, after all?” I heard Jason say as I walked up the stairs to my room.I hurriedly pulled off my clothes and kept them in the basket. I planned on doing the laundry the next day.Next, I removed my jewelry carefully and dropped it in one of my cute little jewelry boxes. When I was finally fully undressed, I entered the beautifully colored and scented bathtub and lowered myself until the water was at the length of m
SuzieI couldn't believe my eyes. I pinched myself lightly to be sure that I wasn't dreaming, and I felt a slight pain on the spot.I looked sideways and noticed that my brother was observing me closely. It looked as though blood drained from his face because he looked unusually pale. His eyes kept darting here and there as though he was looking for reassurance that I would be fine.“Did you invite him over?”My brother asked me.“No, I didn't,” I replied. “I didn't even give him the address of this place. I'm as shocked as you are, Jason.”… But then, the voice from the door interrupted us.“P– pl— please, th– the door,” the person at the door slurred. Jason and I exchanged quick glances before Jason checked the door again.“I don't know… it feels as though he were hurt or something.” I felt a painful churn in my stomach, and my legs felt wobbly.“S– Suz– Suzie, pl– please, help me!” With my heart on my sleeve, I didn't think twice before I brought the passkey and opened the door.H
Jason As soon as the door slid open, I bent over Amanda and hugged her. She got the message because she clutched onto my arm and leaned into my embrace. She was shivering, but the weather wasn't cold, neither was the room cold. In fact, right on the contrary, the weather was quite on the hot side.My heart sank into my stomach as I held onto Amanda. I worried that she could sense my fear, as I was sure that she could hear and notice the increase in my heartbeats. “Amanda!” A familiar voice called out as soon as he entered the room. The hairs on my body stood up, and I opened my mouth in surprise. Why was he here? I had clearly instructed him to not come to the hospital and to resume working again the next day. Did he actually just defile my orders?“Andrew?” Amanda raised up her head, immediately. I watched her closely because,, strangely, I wanted to see how she would react.I watched as Andrew made his way towards us. But, just as he was a few meters away from where we were, I sai
AmandaI opened my mouth to talk, but no words came forth. “He died?” Hilton asked absentmindedly. He placed his hands on top of his head while shaking his head from side to side.“Why are you acting like you don't remember a thing, old man?” Jason offered ignorantly. “Yes, Dean died some years ago. Are y'all suffering from dementia or something?”I gripped the hem of my dress tightly, as goose bumps began to appear on my body. I walked over to where Jason stood and attempted to whisper something in his ear, but he brushed me off a little bit too forcefully because the next thing I knew, I was on the floor, holding onto my bruised knee.It was as though Matilda, my grandma, was imitating Hilton's behavior, because she also had her hands clasped over her head, while I noticed that her eyes were beginning to well up.“No! No!” My grandma shrieked, as though she were in intense pain. My grandma stood up and tried to comfort her, but when she refused to calm down, he joined her in scream
Jason “Stop!” I yelled as I walked back briskly to where Lena, her mum, and her mum's boyfriend, Mr. Fred Sky, were.Lena was on the floor, writhing in pain and holding onto her cheek, while Uriel, her mother, was bending over her, jeering at her. She seemed to be very pissed and irritated.“You ran away from home when I was sick, you Jezebel!” Miss Uriel said as she pointed at Lena violently. “You left your sick mother all by herself, even when I was very down and struggling. All because of what?” She stopped and shot daggers at me with her eyes. If looks could kill, I would have been long dead by that intense stare.“... All because of this man and your stupid high school obsession?” She continued angrily.I was taken aback. Cold sweat trickled down my spine as I thought about the weight of what Miss Uriel was saying.I always knew that Lena loved me a little bit too much, but what I didn't know was that she was capable of leaving her sick mother to be with me. She had told me an e
Amanda“What took you so long?” The doctor asked as we walked towards the ward that held my grandparents. The doctor opened the door to their room slightly, and I peeped in. The sight I saw made my heart leap.My parents were awake… and they were conversing.“Oh my God!” I exclaimed while covering my mouth with my palms. “I– I th–thought something bad probably happened,” I managed to find my voice as I continued to observe the scene. I turned to the doctor who was beaming at me. “When did this happen? This is a miracle! I screamed and my grandparents turned around to stare at us. I closed the door. I didn't think they saw us.The doctor pulled me away from the door and we went to stand a few meters away from the room.“They have been picking up on treatment for some time now,” The doctor started, “However, early this morning, they talked for the first time. I was worried because you hadn't paid a visit to them for quite a long period, which was highly unusual. That was the reason I re
