The next day, I dragged myself out of bed for school. I barely slept — again. The club closed around 1 a.m., and by the time I got home, showered, and tried to calm my racing heart, it was already close to 3 a.m. The constant late nights were wearing me down.
I glanced at the mirror, and as expected, I saw the exhaustion in my eyes. My skin was pale and I looked like a ghost. I sighed and splashed cold water on my face, hoping it would wake me up. It didn’t help much.
School was a blur. I sat through class after class, barely listening. My mind kept wandering back to Fabian — to that night when he whispered in my ear. I still hadn’t seen him since then, but that didn’t make me feel safe. In fact, not seeing him scared me more. It made it feel like he was just waiting for the right moment. Watching. Waiting.
Every small sound made me flinch. A chair scraping the floor. A book falling off a desk. Someone slamming their locker shut. Even laughter felt too loud. I hated how paranoid I’d become. I hated how easily my old habits came back after my encounter with him.
When lunchtime came, I went to my usual corner and sat alone. I silently prayed that Damien wouldn’t show up. He hadn’t talked to me all morning, and I hoped he planned to keep it that way.
Of course I was unlucky, there was no way the universe would listen to me.
I saw him walking across the cafeteria like he owned the place — that usual cocky strut of his.
His eyes were on me and that stupid smug look was glued to his face.
I looked away immediately, pretending not to see him. Maybe if I ignored him, he’d pass.
That didn't happen. He came directly to my table and dropped his tray loudly, making me flinch habitually. He then sat across from me and leaned back like he belonged there.
Again, I could feel everyone's eyes on us. The whispers started and I wished I could just disappear.
Damien didn't care.
“I heard about your little situation,” he said casually, “You’re fired, huh?”
“Guess that leaves you with nothing,” he continued, a smirk creeping across his face. I wanted to slap that smirk out of his face “How are you going to take care of your hospital bills?”
I didn't ask him about how he found out about me being fired from the restaurant.
I stiffened and waited for him to finish.
He leaned forward, lowering his voice.
“You know, I’m still waiting for an answer. How about you tutor me? Pay off your hospital debt that way?”
I couldn’t stop myself from sighing. I didn't want to say yes, but I don't have any choice. I couldn’t pay off the bills working at the club, not with how little I was paid and my parents helping me to spend my money.
“Fine,” I muttered, barely meeting his head. “I'll tutor you” I didn't want to owe him anything.
His grin grew wider, like he’d just won a game. “Good. I’ll have a car pick you up tomorrow after school. Be ready.”
Later that evening, after school, I dragged myself home. I hadn't even changed out of my clothes when my phone rang, I ignored it.
It rang again.
Fuck! I cursed.
I stared at the caller ID with the name mum for a few seconds before picking up the phone.
“Hello?” I said in a low voice, I didn't bother calling her mum, she had stopped me from calling her that years ago.
“I need money, “ her sharp voice cut through the speaker. There wasn't a hello or how are you. Just straight to the point. This was how our conversation has always been.
I blinked “Money? For what? I sent you a huge amount last week”
“I lost everything again. I was so close to winning it all back. You have a high paying job, it shouldn't be a problem. Besides, I'm your mother. It's your job to take care of me”
I clenched my phone, willing the tears to stop.
I worked from money to night to make money, and the only thing she knew how to do was to waste it on gambling.
“I… I don’t have anything,” I replied quietly. “I’m barely surviving myself.”
She clicked her tongue loudly, like I was a disappointment. “Don’t give me that. You’re working in a plush restaurant, aren’t you? What else are you using the money for? Hiding it?”
“No! I’m not hiding anything, Mum. I—I’m trying to pay off a hospital bill. A million dollars.”
She laughed bitterly. “You? A million? What did you do, get into some fancy accident?”
Her voice stung more than I wanted to admit. I rubbed my forehead, feeling a headache building.
“I can’t help you right now,” I said, trying not to sound too weak. “I’m sorry.”
“Well, what good are you, then?” she snapped. “You’re always causing trouble. First, you embarrass the family, now you’re useless too? If you don't send the money, I'll come to your school”
I sighed. Same old technique.
“I'll send it to you soon” I said to be on a safer side.
“Good” she said and the line went dead.
I transferred an amount of money to her, hoping it would sustain her for a while.
My phone buzzed, indicating I had a text. It was from Mia.
MIA: Brother, fighting!!
I smiled, her texts always bring a smile to my face. It reminds me that I still have someone to call family.
I freshened up and left for the bar.
It was still early and the bar wasn't open to customers yet.
Leonard, the man who hired me smiled when he saw me “You're always here on time, we aren't even opened yet”
I shrugged, I couldn't tell him that staying home alone makes me think harmful thoughts.
“Boy, you look tired, try to take care of yourself. That way, when you entertain the guests next week, they won't be scared by you”
“I haven't had the chance to ask you. What do you mean by entertaining the guests?”
He didn't reply. He just gave me a knowing smile and left
.
I frowned at his behaviour and went to the back room. After changing into the uniform I found a corner to sit in and rest my eyes. I wanted to catch up on the sleep I had missed . My eyelids felt heavy and I dozed off leaning against the wall.I don’t know how long I was out but something soft hit my face. I stood up quickly, looking around alertly, then heaved a sigh of relief when I saw it was just Daniel. “Relax, the towel didn’t hit you that hard” I smiled and picked the towel that had slid off from my chest to the floor.“Bar’s open,” he said, taking the towel from me. “Why do you always come early just to sleep? This isn’t a hotel” I couldn’t tell him that I was scared of being alone at home, so I just stood there smiling awkwardly. He rolled his eyes and threw the towel into the laundry basket in the corner before heading out.I put on my apron and followed him out. The music was on and the thumping beats made my head hurt. Sigh. No matter what, I'm never going to
Liam's POV I dragged my tired body to the nearest table to clear it. My limbs ached, my head pounded from exhaustion and my stomach growled from hunger. The only thought that kept me going was the fact that my shift was almost over. “Table six is asking for their bill," my manager snapped at me. I swallowed back my sigh. Didn't he see I was clearing the table? Couldn't he have sent someone else? I smiled and nodded at him. I couldn't afford to lose this job. I balanced the tray in one hand and went to table six. By the time I stepped out of the restaurant, I was too exhausted to walk back home, yet too broke to call a cab. I laughed at how pitiful my life was. A message lit up my cracked screen. It was a text from my younger sister.[Mia]: Don't forget to eat, okay? Love you big bro. A smile tugged at my lips. My little sister, Mia, was the only reason I kept going, I would do anything to make her happy.I texted back.[Me]: already did. I should be telling
I got into character, smiling forcefully, balancing trays of champagne and attending one arrogant customer to another. The smell of rosemary and curry filled the air, making my stomach growl with hunger. Fuck. Not now, I took a deep breath and looked around making sure no one heard it. Just as I went to get the order of one of the customers, Daniel, one of the senior waiters snapped his fingers at me. “I'll help you with the order, go and serve an important client in private room, number eight. They requested for a new server” I frowned, there was a waiter specifically for each private room, so why would the client ask for a new one? I think Dianel read my mind cause he leaned in and whispered. “They had him fired, he coughed while serving them. Apparently, the cough contaminated his food.”I blinked in disbelief. The previous waiter was trained to serve high-end clients so why was Daniel sending me that wasn't a professional? Daniel rolled his eyes “you've wo
I flinched when his hands touched me and quickly slapped it away. “I'm fine” my voice came out harsher than I intended. Surprisingly, he didn't deal with me for slapping his hand away, he just scoffed “You look like you're about to drop dead” I blinked my eyes repeatedly “Just drop off today's assignment and go. I'll make sure to write it for you” To my surprise, he left without dropping the assignment. Well, isn't today just full of surprises? I laid down for the rest of the classes. I couldn't jot down anything anyway, my hands were useless, the wounds sting whenever I moved them. After school, I moved out sluggishly, my steps were getting heavier. Everything in front of me began spinning.I felt myself falling and braced for the impact. But I didn't hit the ground. I felt strong arms around me breaking my fall. “Liam, hey are you okay?”Damien's voice was the last thing I heard before everything went dark. White ceiling was the first thing I saw wh
“I'll try to pay back when I have the money.”“If you can't pay back, I have a better idea” Damien leaned in with a playful smirk. “What?” I took a step back.“Be my tutor” I blinked, not sure if I had heard him right. “You heard me. Be my tutor” he grinned. “At some point I have to start writing my assignments myself unless you like doing them for me” I stared at him for a solid three seconds. Then without a word, I slammed the door at his face. There's no way in hell I'm going to spend more than three minutes with that jerk. Be his tutor? That was like walking into a disaster. He was already difficult to handle, how much more tutoring him. Out of habit, I locked the door, then laid on my bed staring at the ceiling. Fabian was out.I clenched my fist, He wasn't supposed to be out till the next two years. I've been saving every penny I've ever earned, barely eating, and trying my best to survive, all so that I could leave the country before he was released. The
I accompanied Mia the whole day, then walked her home when we were done. “You're not going to come in?” She said when we reached the streets to the house. She always asks this question whenever I accompany her home, though she knows the answer but she still hopes I would go in. I shook my head “Not today”She sighed, expecting that as my answer.I smiled “Go inside” “See you later Lee” she said softly. I watched her enter the house before turning away. Eclipse Lounge was louder than expected. I weaved my way through the crowd and went to the counter. I felt someone tap me “ You're the new kid” I nodded, not comfortable with the word kid. “I'm Gregg, the owner of the place” he handed me a black button-up shirt.”Wear this”“Where do I change?”“The locker room”I blinked at him“Oh, you're new here.” He pointed towards the back. “Once you reach the back, keep moving forward. You'll see a locker room sign.”I nodded and went in the direction he pointed at and quickly
I didn’t want to get up. My body felt like it weighed a ton, and my head hurt so bad, I thought it might burst. Every sound outside my door made me flinch. Even the sunlight sneaking through the curtains made my skin feel too warm. Then came the knocking. At first, it was soft.“Liam?” That voice again. Damien.I didn’t move.He knocked again, louder this time. “Liam, open the door.”I buried my head in my pillow. Maybe if I stayed still long enough, he’d leave. But the knocking turned into banging. “Liam! If you don’t open this door, I swear—”I dragged myself off the mattress and unlocked the door just in time to see him about to slam into it with his shoulder. He stopped. His eyes widened. “What the hell, Liam...?”I blinked up at him. Everything was spinning. “What... are you doing here?”“You didn’t reply to my texts. You didn’t answer your phone. What's going on with you? Did you cry? You look like shit” I ignored whatever he was saying and stared at him like he had two he
