“I'll try to pay back when I have the money.”
“If you can't pay back, I have a better idea” Damien leaned in with a playful smirk.
“What?” I took a step back.
“Be my tutor” I blinked, not sure if I had heard him right.
“You heard me. Be my tutor” he grinned. “At some point I have to start writing my assignments myself unless you like doing them for me”
I stared at him for a solid three seconds.
Then without a word, I slammed the door at his face.
There's no way in hell I'm going to spend more than three minutes with that jerk. Be his tutor? That was like walking into a disaster. He was already difficult to handle, how much more tutoring him.
Out of habit, I locked the door, then laid on my bed staring at the ceiling.
Fabian was out.
I clenched my fist, He wasn't supposed to be out till the next two years. I've been saving every penny I've ever earned, barely eating, and trying my best to survive, all so that I could leave the country before he was released. The more I spent on my parents and Mia, the more I lived on a tight budget.
But now. I let out a defeated sigh.
Fabian was released and my plan was in ruins, there was not enough to disappear and on top of this mess I was owing Damien a hundred million.
I wanted to cry, I just wanted to curl up on my bed and wallow in tears.
Should I just end it all? I don't think anyone will care if I leave this world. Being dead would solve everything.
The thought made me sit up abruptly. I needed to find a job, being in my own space was harmful.
I spent the whole night calculating how much I had left wondering if I should take up the offer of being Damien's tutor.
I shook my head. No way!
The next morning, I dressed up and headed out. Today was Saturday and I was going to spend it on job hunting.
Rejection after rejection made me realise that being honest wasn't going to get me anywhere. I had to stop telling people that I was fired from La Vienne, I don't think it would make me seem trustworthy enough.
Just when I was about to give up. I saw a neon sign that said ‘Eclipse Lounge, hiring.’
It was a bar. I've worked as a chef, waiter, delivery man and lots more, but I've never worked as a bartender or at a bar.
I hesitated, before stepping inside. It's not like I had a choice.
The bar was empty which was understandable since it's still daytime. A man leaned against the counter scrolling through his phone.
“Excuse me” I said “I saw the sign. Are you still hiring?”
The man lifted his head and scanned me from head to toe.
“You don't look like you're eighteen yet”
I smiled at the compliment “I'll be twenty-one this year”
The man hummed “You have the kind of face that brings customers in. You're hired”
“Really? You're not going to test my skills or anything? I don't know how how to mix drinks”
He gave me a weird look “who says you'll be mixing drinks? Your job is to serve the guests and entertain them by doing what they ask of you. You'll start tonight. We close at midnight, hope you can handle it?”
Midnight? Fabian's face flashed in my mind and my stomach twisted.
“Are you in or not?” the man raised an eyebrow. “The pay is good and you will receive more from customers who like your services.”
I clenched my fists “I'm in”
“Good, I expect to see you tonight. One more thing” he glanced at my hands “don't come here with those, it's not good for business”
I glanced at the bandage in my hands “I'll remove them, it's not a problem at all” I quickly ripped them off my hands, ignoring the pain.
He smiled in satisfaction “Nice, I'll see you tonight then.”
I nodded.
I grabbed a cheap meal at the convenience store on my way home. I couldn't get the text I received two days ago off my mind. Fabian hasn't made any move yet. What if it wasn't him? He still has two years in prison so how can he be out, maybe it was a prank by someone that knows our history.
Yes, that might be it.
I froze when I reached my apartment.
Damien was standing there.
I sighed, already exhausted. “What are you doing here?”
He held up a small bag “Brought you some medicine”
“I said I don't need them, and besides I'm already fully healed”
I brushed past him and unlocked my door.
Suddenly, he grabbed my hand.
I struggled “what's wrong with you? I said I didn't need them”.
“Why did you remove the bandage? Your hands are not fully healed yet. Let's go in so that I can wrap your hands back, there are spare bandages in the bag”
I released my hand from his grip and glared at him “Don't behave like we're close. Get lost, I don't need the bandage or the drugs. You're interfering too much and it's pissing me off”
Damien stepped back and scanned my face “You look tense, where have you been?”
I almost wanted to applaud his ability to ignore my words “None of your business” I muttered.
When he saw that my mood was becoming worse than it already was, he set the medicine down and walked back to his car.
“I'll see you on Monday,” he said before driving away.
I exhaled slowly.
For a long time, I just stood there staring at the medicine.
Then, finally, I picked it up.
After eating the food I bought from the convenience store. I stretched on my bed, my phone buzzed beside me.
Mia [Don't forget it's the weekend, we're meeting today]
A small smile tugged on my lips.
Mia, the only ray of sunshine in my life. I texted back, telling her to look for a restaurant while I got ready.
She chose a small, cozy restaurant. When she saw me, she grinned. “You look like hell”
I smiled at her taking a seat in front of her “And you look as pretty as ever” I wasn't lying. The girl was pretty, she had long flowy hair, fair, flawless skin, a face and body fit for models and a smile that could light up anyone's world. But she was too lean.
I frowned and called the waiter, ordering her favourite meals.
“You don't have to order so much,” she said.
“You're too thin. Don't you eat enough? Is the money I give you not enough? Should I add extra?” I enquired.
She shook her head “I'm fine, you look like you need the money more than me, you seem to lose weight anytime we meet.” She sighed “I'm worried about you Lee. Is anything going on? You can tell me I'm an adult. I can help you”
I ruffled her hair “An adult hmm? You're not even eighteen yet”
“I'll be eighteen next month!” She frowned and fixed her hair “Why do you always do this? I've warned you to stop touching my hair”.
The food came in “Eat up, the food is here”
She pouts “You don't tell me anything”
I accompanied Mia the whole day, then walked her home when we were done. “You're not going to come in?” She said when we reached the streets to the house. She always asks this question whenever I accompany her home, though she knows the answer but she still hopes I would go in. I shook my head “Not today”She sighed, expecting that as my answer.I smiled “Go inside” “See you later Lee” she said softly. I watched her enter the house before turning away. Eclipse Lounge was louder than expected. I weaved my way through the crowd and went to the counter. I felt someone tap me “ You're the new kid” I nodded, not comfortable with the word kid. “I'm Gregg, the owner of the place” he handed me a black button-up shirt.”Wear this”“Where do I change?”“The locker room”I blinked at him“Oh, you're new here.” He pointed towards the back. “Once you reach the back, keep moving forward. You'll see a locker room sign.”I nodded and went in the direction he pointed at and quickly
I didn’t want to get up. My body felt like it weighed a ton, and my head hurt so bad, I thought it might burst. Every sound outside my door made me flinch. Even the sunlight sneaking through the curtains made my skin feel too warm. Then came the knocking. At first, it was soft.“Liam?” That voice again. Damien.I didn’t move.He knocked again, louder this time. “Liam, open the door.”I buried my head in my pillow. Maybe if I stayed still long enough, he’d leave. But the knocking turned into banging. “Liam! If you don’t open this door, I swear—”I dragged myself off the mattress and unlocked the door just in time to see him about to slam into it with his shoulder. He stopped. His eyes widened. “What the hell, Liam...?”I blinked up at him. Everything was spinning. “What... are you doing here?”“You didn’t reply to my texts. You didn’t answer your phone. What's going on with you? Did you cry? You look like shit” I ignored whatever he was saying and stared at him like he had two he
The next day, I dragged myself out of bed for school. I barely slept — again. The club closed around 1 a.m., and by the time I got home, showered, and tried to calm my racing heart, it was already close to 3 a.m. The constant late nights were wearing me down. I glanced at the mirror, and as expected, I saw the exhaustion in my eyes. My skin was pale and I looked like a ghost. I sighed and splashed cold water on my face, hoping it would wake me up. It didn’t help much.School was a blur. I sat through class after class, barely listening. My mind kept wandering back to Fabian — to that night when he whispered in my ear. I still hadn’t seen him since then, but that didn’t make me feel safe. In fact, not seeing him scared me more. It made it feel like he was just waiting for the right moment. Watching. Waiting.Every small sound made me flinch. A chair scraping the floor. A book falling off a desk. Someone slamming their locker shut. Even laughter felt too loud. I hated how paranoid I’d
I frowned at his behaviour and went to the back room. After changing into the uniform I found a corner to sit in and rest my eyes. I wanted to catch up on the sleep I had missed . My eyelids felt heavy and I dozed off leaning against the wall.I don’t know how long I was out but something soft hit my face. I stood up quickly, looking around alertly, then heaved a sigh of relief when I saw it was just Daniel. “Relax, the towel didn’t hit you that hard” I smiled and picked the towel that had slid off from my chest to the floor.“Bar’s open,” he said, taking the towel from me. “Why do you always come early just to sleep? This isn’t a hotel” I couldn’t tell him that I was scared of being alone at home, so I just stood there smiling awkwardly. He rolled his eyes and threw the towel into the laundry basket in the corner before heading out.I put on my apron and followed him out. The music was on and the thumping beats made my head hurt. Sigh. No matter what, I'm never going to
Liam's POV I dragged my tired body to the nearest table to clear it. My limbs ached, my head pounded from exhaustion and my stomach growled from hunger. The only thought that kept me going was the fact that my shift was almost over. “Table six is asking for their bill," my manager snapped at me. I swallowed back my sigh. Didn't he see I was clearing the table? Couldn't he have sent someone else? I smiled and nodded at him. I couldn't afford to lose this job. I balanced the tray in one hand and went to table six. By the time I stepped out of the restaurant, I was too exhausted to walk back home, yet too broke to call a cab. I laughed at how pitiful my life was. A message lit up my cracked screen. It was a text from my younger sister.[Mia]: Don't forget to eat, okay? Love you big bro. A smile tugged at my lips. I got into character, smiling forcefully, balancing trays of champagne and attending one arrogant customer to another. The smell of rosemary and curry filled the air, making my stomach growl with hunger. Fuck. Not now, I took a deep breath and looked around making sure no one heard it. Just as I went to get the order of one of the customers, Daniel, one of the senior waiters snapped his fingers at me. “I'll help you with the order, go and serve an important client in private room, number eight. They requested for a new server” I frowned, there was a waiter specifically for each private room, so why would the client ask for a new one? I think Dianel read my mind cause he leaned in and whispered. “They had him fired, he coughed while serving them. Apparently, the cough contaminated his food.”I blinked in disbelief. The previous waiter was trained to serve high-end clients so why was Daniel sending me that wasn't a professional? Daniel rolled his eyes “you've wo
I flinched when his hands touched me and quickly slapped it away. “I'm fine” my voice came out harsher than I intended. Surprisingly, he didn't deal with me for slapping his hand away, he just scoffed “You look like you're about to drop dead” I blinked my eyes repeatedly “Just drop off today's assignment and go. I'll make sure to write it for you” To my surprise, he left without dropping the assignment. Well, isn't today just full of surprises? I laid down for the rest of the classes. I couldn't jot down anything anyway, my hands were useless, the wounds sting whenever I moved them. After school, I moved out sluggishly, my steps were getting heavier. Everything in front of me began spinning.I felt myself falling and braced for the impact. But I didn't hit the ground. I felt strong arms around me breaking my fall. “Liam, hey are you okay?”Damien's voice was the last thing I heard before everything went dark. White ceiling was the first thing I saw wh
