'Sssiiipppsss.' Ahh, nothing can beat a cup of tea on a stressful day. Although, the best tea for me is Chai tea that is prepared by simmering a blend of cow's milk, water, tea leaves and, some spices like dried ginger and mint, together with honey as a sweetener; this relieves the stress that builds up when I'm reading the current reports of the whole dukedom.
"Frielle, are you alright? Do you want me to handle some of the matters for you?" He asked with a concerned look. This is my cousin— Drew Adrian Fortess. A gorgeous young man who receives tons of letters about marriage proposals. Even though he's an illegitimate child of his father, he's still my closest relative and is acknowledged in the high society because of his mastery in academics, a professional in the field of archery, and good looks. I mean, who wouldn't fall for a man whose eyes are tantalizing magenta complemented by the glint his glasses give, a perfect greek nose, and those peachy thin moist lips. It all goes along with his medium-length dark blue hair and his sienna skin that looks more beautiful when struck by sunlight. Another trait that makes women fall for him and even have the audacity to send him a marriage proposal is his personality; he has this gentleness radiating from him, he's kind, thoughtful, helpful, caring, protective, and has a strong sense of justice—"No need dear cousin, it's better if they see me solving these things. I have to rebuild this myself, however I still do need you by my side as an advisor." I said as I put down my now empty teacup."Of course Frielle, anything to help you; I'll be your advisor then." He chuckled and returned on reviewing the financial status of every part of the duchy."Do you need another cup of tea, Miss?" She immediately asked when the teacup touched the tray— she is my maid— Yuri Morcov. She's an orphan who came from a run-down orphanage. The orphanage director– being the evilest person in the world– sold the children in the orphanage for money. When the director saw the beauty Yuri holds: her reddish-brown eyes sparkling with innocence, pink glossy lips, and an east- asian nose. Her hair dyed jet black, her skin pale ivory that glows beneath the sunlight— he promptly sells her in an auction where slave buyers bid continuously just to get her. However, the auction was raided by the Royal Knights and she was saved. Because of her experience, she became a cold-hearted, reserved, and somewhat aloof. She rarely shows emotion to others and most of the time– wears a poker face. However, despite her personality, she is very intelligent and mainly leads the others to a certain task. That's why she's instantly recognized when she first worked to our manor as a chambermaid— then became the servant and her rank climbed up until she became my personal maid.—I simply put my hand over the cup which means 'no- more- tea- for- me'. I was about to continue on my paper works when we heard a knock from the office doors. I fixed my posture and said, "Come in." firmly and gracefully. When the doors opened, it showed a fine-looking young man with a tray on hand—"Good afternoon, Milady. A letter has arrived from the House of Sokolov." This fine-looking young man is Nikos Silvestre, my butler. He has this dark emerald eyes that might hypnotize anyone who stares at it long enough, a roman nose, and pale pink smooth sharp lips. His hair a mossy green that complements his porcelain skin tone. He's from a family who succumbed to poverty when a great plague hit the whole kingdom. My family helped them and in return— they promised their loyalty to us. Thus, his family worked hard on learning how to become a great butler and it passed down from generation to generation and him. Of course, as my butler, he must be mature, understanding, a critical thinker, great in academics, and proficient in anything such as cooking, chores, and etc.; and he is also the complete opposite of Yuri. He's sweet, friendly, and likes to talk to others. It's like he's radiating a warm aura with his smile that attracts people to befriend him—"What's the letter about?" I asked as I motioned him to give me the letter. He handed down the tray and when I saw the letter, I was disgusted. "The same old tea party invitation by their spoiled only daughter. Goodness, I hate her." I placed the letter back and told Nikos, "Please tell her that I appreciate her invite but I have far more important things to do than attending her tea party in which I'm sure she will brag about a new gift her father gave her." After that, Nikos took a bow and left with my orders. My tone has disdain in them because, well, she's a special snowflake and I hate special snowflakes."You hate her that much huh. Well, I can see the reason." Drew said with a smug on his face, still reading the finance reports; and me, I need another cup of tea.By the way, I am Frielle Marcia Madrigal Fortess, the current duchess of the Fortess Duchy and the head of House Fortess. However, before becoming Frielle— I'm first, Riene. A journalist who travels around the world and writes articles about different parts of every country in the globe while immersing myself in their culture and their ways of living. This job of mine is difficult, and patience and energy-consuming, but the delight it brings when you fulfill your job with a great article when you showcase their culture to the world when you address an important issue to the people— it pleases myself and soul and replenishes my energy. Also, because of this– I developed many skills and learned a lot of things that can be used in everyday life or even in survival. However, despite this challenging yet content- giving job of mine, I still wished for a carefree life— where I don't have to worry about deadlines, or 'Karens', or canceled travels, or even unsatisfactory looks from my boss. I can just do things at my own pace, and not worrying about anything. And I think God heard my wish— because he granted it in a very unpleasant and a— I don't think an appropriate way of granting wishes; because he made a ten-wheeler out- of- control truck hit me when I'm taking a stroll on the roads of New York. Let me tell you, it was a very unpleasant feeling because I can still remember the sound when my ribs cracked and how my spinal cord produced a crackling noise when I hit a wall; and oh, the pain. I can't even describe the pain. Even if I'm only reminiscing about it, it makes me close my eyes shut because of IT. REALLY. HURTS... A LOT.Anyway, enough of that. Let's focus on what happened after that. When I opened my eyes, I thought I died because I don't feel anything, nonetheless I'm still right. Yes, I died, but I got reincarnated as Frielle Marcia Madrigal Fortess. Of course, at first, I'm confused to the point that all I could think of is 'What the fuck?' But, after a few weeks, I finally gathered myself and realized some things: first, the fact that I got reincarnated into what seems like another world. Second, I'm now a duchess, an 18-year-old single lady, and is currently the third's most powerful woman in the kingdom. Third, I'm an orphan in this world, my parents died when I'm just 15. Fourth, the dukedom has many problems thanks to my peace-loving grandfather who turned into an evil tyrant for who knows what reason. Fifth, I have to solve those problems. And lastly, I'm gorgeous.I mean— I have this silky platinum blonde hair that looks really good when braided, a pair of violet eyes that shines like crystals, luscious pinkish lips that slightly glow when hit by light, and have this smooth rose white skin tone. Who wouldn't say I'm gorgeous?Back to the present. I'm sitting here inside my office, reading some documents that are related to my effin' grandpas' doings and sipping tea. By doing this, I can list down all of the problems that the duchy faces and solve them one by one... or maybe two by two or more. But then, you might be thinking that as a duchess, I can just sit and rest and have a carefree life like I wished for... but~ no. I choose no. As a journalist in my past self, I've embedded to myself to help those who need me and I still brought it with me as Frielle. So, no. I can't just sit and relax when I know that my people are suffering. So, no— I will perform my duties and responsibilities as a duchess."Yuri, please clean this up I'm done drinking tea," I said while writing down in a piece of parchment all of the issues I've gathered through reading the documents. Now that I've listed them all up, my head hurts because even though, they're only four major problems— I think it will be a big obstacle to solve them up— even one by one. I was planning on what to do next when Drew caught my attention. He still holds the financial reports when he walked behind me and looked at the list I made. He made a frown and in a split second, his face lightens up. I was confused by his reactions so I decided to ask, "Mind sharing the thought?"He looked at me with a smile then turned to Yuri. He ordered her to prepare the carriage because we're going on sightseeing. Yuri looked at me first for approval and I gestured my hand to say 'just do it' then she left with the tray of tea. I turned to Drew, hoping for an explanation when my mind lit up with recognition. As a journalist, you have to confirm first if the info from the source is true by checking it yourself whether interviewing a witness or checking the location itself; once the information is confirmed as true, you'll still need to do further research to the said info and then write the article. That also applies to these problems. If I'm going to solve these, first, I need to assess the situation and see the problem for myself to formulate an effective and decent solution. Drew saw how my eyes widened and my lips form a smile, he to– smiled and said, "Thinking what I'm thinking?" His plan was to have a tour of the whole duchy and the issues themselves. "But, wouldn't it be bad in the eyes of the people? They're falling and yet, all the duchess do is have a tour to the whole dukedom. The people might think I'm like grandpa." I reasoned as I analyzed Drew's plan.He shook his head and made a short chuckle. I'm still confused by what he did and was about to ask about his plan when he looked at me with a smirk."Who said you'll have a tour as a duchess?"The leaves of the trees that surround the road dances together with the wind, the shadow that it casts follows its steps as if it wants to create a shadow play in the middle of the day. You can hear the playful chatter of the people inside of every shop you pass by. Their juicy gossips echoing from the shops to the alleyways separating each shop. The clattering of dishes inside the restaurants reverberates together with the heart felt talks of couples sitting on their tables. Everything might look normal and peaceful, but when you look at the shop owner’s faces— you can see sadness in their eyes despite their happy faces. This can only mean one thing: even though they have customers, it’s not enough to keep their shops open; thus, they might close down or worse, get bankrupt. It breaks my
‘Why is he here?’ My mind entered a state of confusion for a little while, wondering why a very important person could be out in the open so freely, without any guards or servants with him. ‘Is he not aware that he could be killed at any moment?’ I thought to myself as a switch flipped off inside my mind. The ‘protect mode’ was flipped on and I was ready to grab His Highness and drag him to safety, to my carriage and ride off into the insides of the palace to keep him safe. I was about to stand up and do what I had in my brain but I felt a hand grab my left arm that’s on the table. I looked down and it was Drew, he has a frown in his face; his brows knotted together and his eyes held the stare of a warning— sharp and a bit deadly. He’s grip on my arm tightened the longer I remained in the position of standing up. I slowly sat down again and his grip loosened together
Footsteps at a fast pace can be heard going back and forth, many of them in a hurry. The scratching of the bristles of the broom was echoing on the hallways, as dusts flew everywhere. Shouts of orders were given amidst the chaos ensuing inside of the Fortess Estate. Everyone is busy— doing tasks that never end. They are anxious— slightly trembling and sweating cold beads. They are all waiting in anticipation for the arrival of an important guest. While I was here, stuck in my office— as usual— doing paper works and examining letters upon letters. ‘Is it strange or lucky that no one has sent me any marriage letters?’ I said to myself as I sort through another pile of letters. From what I know when I was Reine, ladies of legal age (also even in their early teens) would receive or be arranged in a marriage of convenience for many reasons. It could be for fortune, fame, power, preservation of bloodline, and even because of debt. Come to think of it, nobles and royals ba
“You mean, you need money?” “You can just ask us to lend you money right?” The two boys said in unison. I can’t help right now but sigh in disappointment. “Wait, better than that… we can just give you money. You know, I have a treasury all to myself, Drew has a pastry shop who has a great amount of income. Just ask and we can give you the amount.” Uriel emphasized. He said it in a monotonous tone and yet it still bears confidence, his face— emotionless, no twitches, no smudges— it’s a straight serious face and it scares me. This guy, the Crown Prince, a person soon to be king, has his own treasury that should be used for the sake of the kingdom— will willingly give me some of it just because I asked for a way to earn money. ‘I don’t know if I should feel loved or terrified.”
The Kingdom of Sagareste: a prosperous kingdom who managed to remain at peace for a very long time. By making treaties and contracts, the kingdom has made many friends and allies with the neighboring kingdoms, nations and empires. With that, the Sagareste Kingdom has avoided war for many centuries and it will in the future. In the Sagareste Kingdom, there are 4 dukedoms that each have their own domain. One being the Fortess Dukedom which provides almost all the crops and food supply in the whole kingdom, indeed a monopoly in the production but, the lands of the Fortess dukedom are the only ones who can produce top quality and large quantity of crops every year, without fail. ‘Until that tragedy happened.’ &nb
‘To my dearest cousin, Hi, I hope that you are having a great week. As I have promised, I will help with the best that I can-- without using my status, my treasury or anything that is related to me being the Crown Prince. And so, I decided to just introduce you to someone who might be of help. I happen to be friends with a businessman who has a genuine desire to sell new things all the time. So, I have said that you have a new product and he said he’s interested in it. Now, he wants to meet you personally to have a look about this product. However, here comes the bad news, we have decided a date, without your consent I know it's disrespectful and bad. But, i think it is considerable enough since it is a long time before you two meet, finally. It’s one week. Anyways, I hope you can finish your product by then.
Duchess 8 4 days until the set day of me meeting Marcus Zoldago. As of now, I'm trying to relax by drinking Chai tea with honey and a sugar cube. Apparently, I'm still bothered by what I saw yesterday, before placing an order at the fabric shop. Was it really Uriel that I saw? Or did my eyes just trick me? And, why does the other man seem so familiar? Like I have seen him before? That can’t be the case, people with the unusual hair color such as his should be hard to forget and hard to miss. Besides, if one was born in the kingdom with that kind of hair, they would be the talk of the town for the rest of their lives, and everyone would know them… even me. It’s so uncommon and the fact that my memory makes me think that I have seen him before makes it all the more weird. And concerning when I really thought I saw Uriel yesterday.
I don’t know what happened after but, all I can say before that is just utter disappointment at my creation. I am currently trying to calm down so that i can recall some contingency plan (if i made one) to fix this mess. “Drew, I know you’re concerned about me, but please do remember, you have to be at the palace in a few minutes. You’ll be delivering some pastries right?” Drew stopped his pacing as he looked at me intently, his right index and thumb holding his chin as it’s supported by his left hand. He continued to give me the look of pleading as if telling me that ‘I don’t want to –be there, I should stay here with you.’ and the ‘I should be helping you right now’ look. I know he just wants to support me all the way through but, he still has his own life and I don't want him to be like, ‘wrapped around my finger’ or something. “Drew—” I pleade
DUCHESS 50Her Majesty the Queen then proceeded to tell me how the too much intake of steroids made my grandfather turn into a tyrannical maniac. How my grandfather would always request to have a cup of tea with her because he would experience immense straight after their tea. And then, after a few months of having constant tea with Her Majesty the Queen, Queen Elise finally gave my grandfather the blend of tea that she would always serve with him. It was mixed with all the herbs, chemicals and plants that would make up the steroids. It was a foolproof ploy and soon enough, my grandfather turned for the worst. Her Majesty the Queen erupted in a laugh as she saw the devastation and fear smeared all over my face: eyes wide from shock, tears still streaming down my cheeks as she told the whole story. She said she purposely made the writers omit that part since it would trace it all to her, “so I had to erase some footsteps so whoever tries to investigate what happened at that point of t
DUCHESS 49 The breeze of the cold wind at night made the balcony all the more relaxing, but all that relaxation was slowly being replaced by anxiety as I held the envelope in my hands. The contents were still unknown, but I hope that it would solve the final piece of the puzzle. The theory of His Majesty the King was highly plausible, given the fact that a person cannot simply overlook the emotional pain that they are holding, and it is true that the said pain will catch up to them soon. But the theory alone cannot simply explain it all. No, there must be something else, the mere grief is not enough to make a person of such good nature and good heart turn into the most tyrannical person that a person can be, and at such a fast pace. Holding the envelope in my hand, I took the both ends and proceeded to tore it apart, creating an opening for me to take the paper inside. The paper smelled like flowers and fruits--- whoever used this paper must be of noble blood and took great effort i
DUCHESS 48 Into the backrooms of the Grand Hall of the Royal Palace, the people inside were only me, Viscount Ludwig and His Majesty the King. Her Majesty the Queen and the Crown Prince were not explicitly invited thus they cannot enter here in the back rooms. The back rooms are a private room that only His Majesty the King can use and have access in to. not even the servants can just enter this room and when serving us food and drinks, the trolley was left outside and we are the ones to take it from there. Being invited in the backrooms means that His Majesty the King has something important to discuss, or it is something of a top secret kind of way. Once inside the backrooms and already had our fill of the meal: steak, fried potatoes partnered with hollandaise sauce and some wine wiiiittt h dessert included some mixed fresh fruit and honey, perfect for a refreshing end of the meal. We sat in silence as we savoured the greatness of the meal and none among the three of us dared t
DUCHESS 47 A week after the dinner at the Royal Palace, invitations are already being distributed to every noble of the Sagareste Kingdom for the upcoming awarding and banquet celebration at the end of the month. word had circled around the nobles of whom the award banquet celebration might be, but a lot of them had already suspected that the award and banquet is dedicated to the current Duchess of the Fortess uchy: Friele Marcia Madrigal Fortess— me. Upon knowing that, many of the nobles had already sent me letters of congratulations and further invitations on their houses so as to establish a connection. Still, most of the nobles are busy for the preparation of the event that is going to happen at the Royal Palace. a lot of them have been going to the modiste or summoning the best designer in the kingdom to commision a dress or a set of them. Meanwhile, the Harvesting Season had also started and the farmers were busy harvesting their produce and organising the selling price
DUCHESS 46A few minutes after my meal, I glanced over at Yuri to see how she was faring as she read through that part of the book— the one detailing the reign of tyrant grandfather when he was still alive. “Care to tell me what is said in there?'' I said while finishing up the dessert. Yuri did not budge nor acted to ever hear my voice, she was so focused on the book that she might as well place her face inside of it. her brows were scrunched, her brows almost meeting each other and forming a unibrow. I cleared my throat, in hopes to get her attention this time, and good thing it was successful.“Your Grace. Sorry, I was too immersed in the book. do– do you need anything?” the Head Maid asked as she walked closer to me, closing the book and putting it on the desk. her face was the usual blank one, a poker face if you will. but her eyes tells something else. “None at the moment. I am one with my meal. you can take them away.” I said while i wiped my mouth with the cloth. Yuri bowe
DUCHESS 45“Oh, there you are.” A voice said and soon was followed by footsteps coming closer to me. I whipped my head to the direction of the voice and the footsteps, only to see the Crown Prince, in his pajamas? That is so weird. “Uriel, why are you in your pajamas? how can you walk in the halls in your pajamas?” Seriously, we all have such weird things inside our minds. Uriel only smiled at me with his slightly sleepy eyes and replied, “I walked and traveled through the secret pathways inside the Palace walls. it's fun really, i can show them to you if you want. By the way, what are you looking for?” Uriel then grabbed a book, offering his help.“Don't you have a duty to get to?” I asked with a raised brow. nobles start their day at the break of dawn, what more for a royal. but Uriel only laughed at my question and continued, “Well, you are here. aren't you technically taking a break?” a few moments of silence passed between us with only the end of pages being flipped echoing t
DUCHESS 44“Back then your mother and I made sure that we would have time to hang out with each other, whether it be for a tea or even doing anything as long as we have each other’s presence, as long as we are on each other’s side. we are fine with that.” Her Majesty the Queen said as she took a sip from her cup. Meanwhile, I cannot help but to continue to read the letter that my mother sent to her. It was fun to read them as they would talk about just about anything. But what interested me more was when they talked about my father and the King, how they judged the two men and pointed out both the good and bad qualities of the King and my father. I could not help but laugh."Wait, my mom and you, met my father and His Majesty at the same time?" I asked, turning my head to face Her Majesty the Queen. The Queen nodded her head as a confirmation. "Yes, they used to spar with each other when learning swordsmanship. That is how we also met them, as we watched a match and we looked into e
DUCHESS 43 Violetta Suzette Perues was her name before she became queen. And even then, she was the fairest of them all. Her hair as black as ebony, her lips are red as blood and her skin as white as snow, many people swooned over her, both male and female wanted to be with her, wanted to own her. Many people would flock around her and would surround her whenever she is in the proximity, they would always try to talk to her and would always try to be close to her as proximity may allow--- they would do their best to be at skin to skin contact to her--- they would do their best to hold her. Violetta Suzette Perues then adapted an intimidating persona--- sha created a meticulously curated persona that intimidating, that is cruel and that is unapproachable--- she made it so that people would go away, so that people would flock away from her and leave her alone. But all that was in vain--- as people still flocked around her, still surround her and as if that is not enoug
DUCHESS 42 The chambers of the Queen was breath- taking. It embodies the symbols of the Royal Family: roses, gold vines and twinkling lights. The doors of the Queen’s chamber was painted pearl white and decorated with gold linings. A symbol of moon embossed on the top of the door, symbolising that it is the chamber of the Moon of the kingdom. The inside was even more so breath- taking. With red velvet curtains hanging from the huge windows, to the starlight painting at the ceiling being complimented by the chandelier inside. The receiving area of the Queen’s chamber was giving a calm atmosphere with the furnitures in the color of pastel blue. The sofas with the framing painted in gold, the tables with gold lining. The vases were filled with roses in full bloom and giving the sweet smell of flowers, it is addicting at this point. The floors were also tiled in pearl white and lined with gold. Everything was white and lined with gold: the bookshelves, the desk, the wind
