Chapter 3 The Mysterious Call

It was only  until he is at his desk and seeing piles of papers that Detective  Ian Murray realized that his precious holiday is over.  It was a refreshing and relaxing being in the countryside for weeks. His only sister had just got married  and he needed to attend the event. For the remaining days he explored  their town and experience the coast of Nantucket.

As he slump himself to sit, he saw William  walking towards him. “welcome back, boss” waving his hand with another sheets of paper. Another to add with the piles.

He was looking directly at William’s lively, blue eyes. His hair neatly set as always. Looking as if to impress the very few females in their department.

“ Well now!” William said, seeing his boss’s unhappy look. “you don’t look like you’ve just returned from a holiday.”

“Have I?” shaking his head.

Up on the third floor they’d  rearranged everything again.  Ian Murray would soon need a GPS to find his way to the homicide chief’s office. He had been away for only three lousy weeks, and yet there were at least five new faces glaring at him as if he were  an alien. Who the hell are they?

“I’ve  got good news for you, Ian.” Chief Jacob Nielsen  said as Ian’s  eyes went over the walls of the office. Its also newly painted.

“Good news?” Ian looked at the chief with doubt. “Now I am worried”

“ I have assigned a new personnel on your team”

“oh great Chief, you mean I need to babysit?” Ian said with a little irritation. He remembered the last time when a newcomer was assigned to assist them in an investigation. He did more work than necessary. He has to literally  give a very specific instructions on how to investigate and he always seem at lost.

“Well, they need to learn. Besides it was good that the previous was under you, now, he got more confidence.”

“please chief if you want to assign someone I would appreciate if it is someone who knows and has idea of what we are dealing with.”

“Well this one graduated with flying colors, so rest assured” the Chief  said but not convincingly.

After  awhile he called on someone from outside. “Hesus! Come on over”

Then came a good-looking baby face Hispanic man. Ian rolled his eyes as he turned his back.

“Hesus, this is detective ian Murray. Ian, this is Hesus ,he will be under your command”. The chief was smiling and Hesus is also smiling.

Just after his meeting with the chief he threw his last complain. “Christ sake! Chief, seriously?  Hesus?” he was referring to the  name. as it turned out that Hesus is a Spanish term for Jesus. But the chief only give him a teasing  laughter.

“you’ll do good.” He pat him on the shoulder.

He returned to his office and started to look into the piles of paper on his desk.  He was thinking what to do with his new team member . shall I entrust him some field work or just let him do secretarial? He was on that thought when his mobile rang. He picked it up to answer.

“hello”

“Detective  Ian Murray ?”

“yes”

“ listen detective, robbery and homicide 15th of may 2005,  this is far from being solved. You may want to check on it.” Then hung.

Ian can easily ignore that call but there is something about the voice. Something eerie.  He was sure it will call again.

Besides that, the day went on normal. He went straight to his apartment and  prepare himself a meal, when his mobile rang.

As he received it the man on the other side  said. “a person is in hiding for her life for years, like myself. Look into it .” and hung up again.

He decided to just look into it the next day but with no intention of taking it seriously. Its been fifteen years and  surely investigators have probably  met walls.

The next day, William his assistant  came to his office already aware of the news of having a new member of the team. “He seemed very nice, really nice , I think.,” said William, trying to make Ian fell better.

“More than nice I think. Remember the name is Hesus”  Ian said not amused.

“Listen to this, Ian. The case you wanted me  to find” raising a folder.

“yes”?

“Actually, its kinda interesting.  Very …interesting.” William said with emphasis, as he dropped the case file on top of Ian’s  desk. Ian took it but with hesitancy in opening it. As if he is experiencing a premonition of a freak tragedy. “Well aren’t you going to read?”

The report said that it was an attack to a young couple in a luxurious summer cottage. They were beaten to a pulp. The woman’s body was badly bruised and suffered terribly during the beating. The  autopsy report said that the man was shot on the chest but still beaten later with frenzy. It was also in the report that cash of great amount were stolen along with expensive personal belongings.

The gun used at that time was soon recovered from somewhere outside the property but no fingerprints according to the investigation.

Suspicion quickly fell on a group  of teenagers as some surveillance camera caught their car  arriving  and leaving  the road leading to the cottage at a time the crime took place.

“Have you caught up to where it says who the suspects were?”

“yes. And the reports also suggests that some parents of these kids were the kind who earned lots of money.”

He skimmed the groups names a few times. It was enough to produce beads of sweat on his brows even in an air-conditioned room, because not only their fathers who earned enormous sums and become well-known figures. For as today their sons has gained enough wealth and fame to be considered untouchables in the society. These boys who were born with luxury get what they wanted.

Detective Ian Murray is starting to be overwhelmed and that is still the beginning.
