It's September, so it's not cold.
It's so good not be wrapped in pounds of clothing.
I take almost an hour to commute from Grand Marais, to the community center on my hometown Grand Portage.
Only a few miles shy of the Canadian Border, in the easternmost point of Minnesota on the Arrowhead is a small community called Grand Portage and it's loaded with Native American history and natural beauty.
I'm just a 17 year old girl that happens to live there. There are not a lot of kids.
My name is Ziigwan, that means Spring, but everyone calls me Zig. Except my mom when she's mad.
My mom works at the community center here, a teacher at the Oshki Ogimaag Charter School.
Unfortunately I could only attend that school until 6th grade.
After that, I started to live with my grandparents in Grand Marais during winter months, because it's too cold for me to commute that many miles to school every day.
Over 40 miles and one hour trip.
It's too much when the temperature is almost zero. Right?
My mom is white and was originally from Grand Marais. When she started working in Grand Portage she met my father and the rest is history.
They name me Ziigwan because I was born in March 20th, the beginning of spring.
I still got to live home 'till mid November, after that, travelling home after 4:30 pm is just a countdown to darkness. Or darkness itself.
And after my birthday I come back home too. Starts to be warmer and there's more daylight.
Of course, my parents visit almost every weekend when I am not home, I'll be too homesick to survive otherwise.
Today was the first day of school and the stranger thing happened on bus back to Grand Portage.
My long lost friend, King Thunderbird returned and is now attending Cook County High School.
I noticed because he was on the same school bus as me.
As, we were the only seniors at the bus for the last 15 minutes.
There are just fifty senior students at my school, so it's hard to go unnoticed.
"Ogi." I say.
Nothing. Maybe it's just not him.
"Ogi!" I try louder.
He turns his head. Surprised expression on his face.
"Ziig?" He asks doubtful.
I smile wide.
"When did you returned?" I ask smiling and getting up.
"Wait there. I'll come to you."
I sit. He's right, I'm in heels. I'll probably fall.
"Oh my gosh. Are you okay?" I asked again.
I'm like starstrucked. He's bigger, taller... Wow.
This was my best friend through kindergarten and all the way until 6th grade.
After that my mom told me he moved to Canada because, you know, he comes from THE original family and they move him there because 'Cook High is too white'.
Which I kind of get...
"If I'm okay? You should have seen his face!" he smirks.
"What?"
"Oh... You not asking about the fight..." He murmured.
"What have you done?" I make a face so he knows he has something to reveal.
"Stupid Cole Cook..." He tells me.
"Yeah. He's an ass. " I agree "What happened?"
"Basketball tryouts."
Oh... Yeah. Cole Cook is the team captain.
"You didn't make it?" I ask concerned.
"Oh I made it... "
"He tried to hit you?" I demand "Or did he say a typical racist thing that set you off?"
"The second. No one saw. It was in the boys locker room. He tried to swing back but he fell flat on his face. Stupid brat!" He's trying to control himself but I see he's annoyed.
"Well. Anniin to you too dear friend. Care to acknowledge me?" I say pretending to be mad.
"NanaBooZhoo, Ziigwan. You're older!" He laughs.
"You're huge. Shut up." I blush, rolling my eyes.
"You know, no one calls me Ogi. Just you." He states.
"Why? That is not you name? Ogimaa? Ah? Right?" I ask teasing him.
"No. It's not, besides everyone calls me King. You know that. Only my grandma calls me Myeengun and the Elders too."
"Come on. I was a child. It sounded great to me... O-G-I."
"You're still annoying." He cried.
When we got off the bus I finally asked him "Are you staying this year?"
"Yeah. Got to graduate in the states. I was born here. It's only fair." He answers.
He's really tall. His shoulders wide. His skin is darker and his eyes black as death.
"In the winter how are you coming back from school?" I ask.
"I got a car. It's a Land Rover. Good in snow and ice." He says " and you?"
"I stay in Grand Marais during snowing months. My grandparents. Remember them?"
"Yes. Blue eyed. I remember. Your grandma used to give me candy." He laughs.
"Do you need a ride home?" I ask.
"I'll walk. Just give me your number. If you want I can give you a ride tomorrow." He says giving me his phone.
"Okay. But you know that your family house is like four miles away. Right?" I type my number and call myself to get his.
"Yeah. I'll run there." He grins.
Wow. Billion dollars smile.
"Just take the phone." I give it back "Baamaapii, my king." I tease.
"Miinwaa kaawaabmin, anang." And he starts running home.
Did he said 'Again I will see you, Star' ?
Prick.
I call my mother.
"Mom? I'm at front. Where are you?"
"Coming out." She hangs.
One minute later I see mom.
She hugs me and we walk home. It's not far. Only half a mile.
"So, how's school? Still stands?"
"Yes. Still stands." I say dryly.
Suddenly I remembered.
"Mom!"
"What?"
"Guess who's back?"
"Little Wolf... Sorry I forgot to tell you." My mom apologies.
"You knew?"
"Yes. I saw Aniibish last weekend at the center. I just forgot." She apologized again.
"Ogi is huge. We should invite them to eat at our house sometime." I suggest.
"When Dad comes home. You know he likes to keep the Tribe business far from him."
As we enter the front door of our house I meditate on that.
If it wasn't for my mom I wouldn't know one word in Ojibwe. I don't know much, only the easy stuff.
My features are more white that indigenous, for that I'm not bullied at School. Not much. My name is Ziigwan Woods, though. It's there in my name.
Other then that I am just not blonde, because I got my moms blue eyes and white complexion.
My father is away doing business. I don't know. He works for a big lumber company. Usually he works from home, but sometimes has meetings or board meetings.
He goes away on work and it's only me and mom. They talk to each other every night. I just text him goodnight.
When we are alone at the house we just eat in the kitchen. My mom is trying new Italian cuisine and I'm afraid I'll gain some weight in the process.
They know how to cook. I'll give them that.
"Mom. Ogi is giving me a ride tomorrow to school. Can I invite him over for breakfast?" I ask.
"Sure honey bear, tell him to come early I need to talk to him first."
Odd but okay.
Me: Binesi, my mom wants to meet you before school. She's cooking breakfast. Do you still eat?
Two hours later...
Ogi: I eat a lot. What time?
I waited fifteen minutes just not to seem too eager to reply.
Me: 7:00
Ogi : o.k. c'ya
I went downstairs to tell my mom.
"Mom, mom! Where are you?"
I found her in the laundry room.
"Mom?!"
"What?"
"He'll come. 7:00" I say to her.
"Okay. Come help me to take this to the dryer."
"Why did I come down here for? Stupid chores."
After that I just shower and went to bed. I really need some sleep, tomorrow is the first day of volleyball. I'm not that athletic but somehow I'm good at volleyball.
I love it and this makes me more sociable, because we're a team. And we go to other High School's to compete on the weekends. Not all weekends. Some weekends.
It's cool. Makes me more accessible to my peers. Since other than Volleyball team, I'm just into fashion, but feel like I don't like to share that with anyone at school. So I share Volleyball.
I have one girlfriend and she is nice to me but we don't really hang out on weekends.
I'm a top student and that is not considerate cool but at least I don't wear glasses.
Buzz buzz buzzMy cell phone is buzzing.Alarm.6:15Got to get up.Okay. Let's get dressed. Breakfast's in fourty minutes.I'm wearing a skirt today, I don't care. I have to enjoy the warm days before the snow hits the fan. So to speak.I love fashionable clothes and I'm always bothering my mom to go shopping for them.I just get four to five months a year of semi-warm weather to wear real clothes. The rest of the year is too cold for trying.I'm wearing an tight short short short black skirt and mid thigh high black boots. Blue floaty blouse and a black motorcycle jacket. To complete the look, a messy bun, soft make-up but thick eyeliner. The lipstick is nude."That will do."7:05 I'm ready.Get my gym bag, toss my books into a big black tote bag and go downstairs."Mom, can we go see Jessica this weekend...""Hi Ziig." Ogi says."Oh... I did not hear the doorbell
"I cannot believe you took more time to get ready than me. And I put make-up on." I shake my head to express my surprise."I didn't want to get out of that shower. It felt too good. Sorry." He scratched the back of his hear laughing."Can we go to the Diner? Tiffany begged me to go." I ask him."Ugh. Do we have to?" He say with pleading eyes."What about... we get a milkshake real quick. Stay for 15 minutes tops. Just oblige me, Myeengun. I promise you will like it." I try to lure him."Fine. Let's go. I guess you need to eat something after that non-existing lunch you took." He sullenly said."What? I had a big breakfast."When we arrived, I saw the tension in Cole's face. He smiled anyways."Hi guys. Look what this kitty cat dragged in." I say to the group.A big group.Britney and Hunter were eating each other faces. Tiffany and Katie were talking to each other. Molly, Cole, Tucker and Logan were in a separate
"What's going on?" I asked him "Tell me. Just tell me.""How did you know that those women were dead?" I asked again."I can't tell you, Ziig." He says finally."What? Why not?" I ask him."I just can't.""Look. Is really weird that you came back and suddenly you think you're my bodyguard." I paused, shifting my weight to my left leg. "I don't need that kind of treatment. We're friends. We will always be friends. I care about you and you care about me. I got it, but why are you acting like you need to protect me from your own father? Are you keeping up?" I'm starting to fume."No. You should go downstairs now.""You're obviously kidding me... " I storm out.Downstairs, I asked the trio. "what is going on?""The sheriff is a friend and called me to make sure you and Ogimaa were okay. Are you okay?" Mr Binesi asked."Yes. Ogimaa helped me and all our friends at the Diner. We're just shocked. Nothing really ha

"Ogi, what tha funk are you talking about? That's a Hollywood movie, not real life. Wake up.""Just calm down or else you will act suspicious in front of all these people.""Let just get to next class. I'll be fine by then." I rush past him.The rest of the afternoon went smoothly. It's Wednesday and usually the practice is thougher on hump day. Today was not, well it was business as usual, but strangely it was easier for me.I think I'm faster and don't get that tired. Maybe it's just the adrenaline from recently been a victim of Ogi and life."I'm so hungry. my stomach is eating itself. Urgh." I cry out in the locker room."I would tell you to go to that Diner, but you know..." McKenzie said.McKenzie is that typical bitchy girl, that is always rolling her eyes, saying 'Whatever' and 'Loser', undermining everyone that is, in her mind, a threat."Jeez, McKenzie, you're going to hell for sure..." I snap back."Oh,
"You're on edge..." Ogi tells me when we get to the car."McKenzie... is just... Urgh!""You're afraid that people notice your pull towards me. They all already have. Just stop fighting it.""I have no idea of what you are talking about... I mean. We're friends." I say stoically."Well, we don't need to be more than friends... just you keep lying to yourself and that's when your pain grows. Meaning. I got used to it and manage to function without much-needed closeness, but you... you'll find it an impossible task if you deny it even exists." He tells me calmly."When did you become a philosophy master?" I ask."I had to deal with a lot in the past six years. That's it." He shared."I see. So, how weird it would be if I place my hand in your neck?" I ask afraid of sounding desperate."That's an interesting choice, but okay. I wouldn't be offended. Neither would I look too much into it." He says.I immediately place my lef
Buzz buzz buzz6:15Alarm.Get immediately out of bed. I'm fresh as a leaf today. Guess that nap wrapped in Ogi had some positive effects.Great.What am I wearing today? Oversized white shirt, white skinny jeans. Camel cardigan and ankle boots. Wavy beach hair, light make-up but purple lipstick. Purple tote bag.I think I've overdone it today, but I don't care. I love it.Me: Can you come inside? I'm a tiny, little late. Sorry!Ogi: O.k.. C'ya soon. And I'm freaking late. Urgh!7:00"Mom, I'm late." I yell, descending the stairs."I know. Sit down.""Ogi is already here." I smile."And got some awful news." My mom adds."Indeed. I was just telling Mrs. Woods that Sheriff called my father last night to inform that a person that was found dead in Covill motel. it's a man, late 50's. Animal attack." He says."Oh my. That's terrible. Horrible news. What is going on? Rabies?"
"Ogimaa, you had six years to get used to it. I'm seventeen and thought I knew all it was there to know about myself. I'm sorry if this is not easy for me to swallow." I pause " I don't even know if you're not having a psychotic episode and I'm getting convinced of something that is not real."He starts to come back to the car and strip his clothes."Shit." I let out "what if someone sees?""If you don't believe it yourself, even with your family background... Do you think a tourist will believe his or her eyes?""No." I simply reply. He was only with boxers shorts.I don't think anybody is around here anyways. This is a pretty remote access to the woods and the car is really close to the trees."Okay. Here goes nothing." He declares "Take the car keys, my flower."I run to his side and store the keys inside one of my many pockets, zipping it."Okay, just let me kiss you first."I look up to him and
Fortunately everyone said exactly the same thing and Logan was with me when I entered the kitchen area, so it was fast to take everyone's statement of the happening.I told Ziigwan to call her mom, she was probably getting worried about the fact that she's not home.I called my mom. She told me that she was going to meet Mrs. Woods at her house to calm her down. I guess not having her husband in town and her daughter being at a crime site would do that to a person."Okay, mom, I love you." She tells her mom before hanging up.
The basketball practice was awesome and any stressful stares or glances died on the court. We are a team. No matter what. In that basketball court we are a team.I'm taking forever taking my shower. I need to clear my head of all the carnal thoughts about her.I stand under the freezing water, steaming when it hits my burning skin, sending vapour to the air.I feel rejuvenated and fresh as a spring leaf.
"Piece of Cake. We even have first period together. Come on, Wolfie let's ignite rumours. You look hot and have no zits on your face." She jokes."Yeah." I simply said.Everyone was looking at us. At her obviously because of her look. At me because I am new and I am walking with her."Zig." I heard a girl call her."Come meet the girls" she tells me, dragging me.
It was a bust. When I got there it was nine pm and she was just laying in her bed in her phone. I could listen to her breathing and heart beat.I returned to my parents house and try to get some sleep. I slept like a pup.At seven was at her house craving to see her. I was talking to Mrs. Woods and trying to calm her about my driving skills when I hear her trotting those stairs."Mom, can we go see Jessica this weekend..." She yells. And ap
It's finally September and today is the first day of school.
