"Ogi, what tha funk are you talking about? That's a Hollywood movie, not real life. Wake up."
"Just calm down or else you will act suspicious in front of all these people."
"Let just get to next class. I'll be fine by then." I rush past him.
The rest of the afternoon went smoothly.
It's Wednesday and usually the practice is thougher on hump day. Today was not, well it was business as usual, but strangely it was easier for me.
I think I'm faster and don't get that tired. Maybe it's just the adrenaline from recently been a victim of Ogi and life.
"I'm so hungry. my stomach is eating itself. Urgh." I cry out in the locker room.
"I would tell you to go to that Diner, but you know..." McKenzie said.
McKenzie is that typical bitchy girl, that is always rolling her eyes, saying 'Whatever' and 'Loser', undermining everyone that is, in her mind, a threat.
"Jeez, McKenzie, you're going to hell for sure..." I snap back.
"Oh, poor Ziggy, did I touched a wound?" She laughs "Maybe Wolfie could lick it up for you. What a waste... " and she rolls her eyes.
So predictable.
I just shower, get dressed and hury to get away from her. I don't want to say something I would regret.
"Oh... You're angry." Ogi says the second I walk past the locker room doors.
"Stupid McKenzie..." I murmur.
"Who is she?"
"That blonde with almond eyes..." I start.
"That's almost all of them..." he states "maybe you should tell me when we see her. Now we must get you some food, you're starving."
"Of course you know that I am starving... is my wolf telling you that?" I snapped at him.
He laughs "No, you're belly is making noises. You're funny."
I sighed and we just went to a Coffee Shop downtown.
"We should start homework." I said "I'm worried I'll won't have time later."
"I agree. We'll do it now, 'cause it will take just half an hour and then you can come with me to the Heritage Center." He tells me like it's already settled that I go with him.
"Only, if we go hiking by the Pigeon River saturday morning..." I negotiate "... I beat you still remember all the good spots."
He smiled, his eyes smiling too.
"Deal."
The rest of the day was uneventful. Thank goodness.
We went to the Heritage Center. He showed me all kind of old legends about wolfs. Most of them I already knew.
Both our families live inside the Grand Portage National Monument and so is the Heritage Center. And lots land, river, lakes, trees and trees andtrees. Chippewa History and lands.
I slept restlessly. My dreams weird and violent.
I saw a black wolf with red eyes that was peeling off my skin. It was horrible. Then I saw a white wolf with yellow eyes bitting McKenzie's ankles while she just stood there painting her long nails.
Buzz buzz buzz
6:15
Alarm.
I jumped off the bed and run to the bathroom to throw up.
I look awful. Another day with a extra layer of make-up.
I'm not feeling well. I don't know what's going on. I just feel weir. Nothing hurts, just, I feel different... I don't know. Maybe it's just my period that's coming sooner or something.
I'm wearing boyfriend cut jeans with beige ankle boots. Loose white shirt. Beige aviator jaket and a white backpack. I need to be comfortable today.
My make-up today ultra natural.
6:45 I'm already having breakfast.
"Well, you fell out of bed today... so early." My mom mocks me.
"I know. I didn't sleep well." I declared.
"Oh... That's not good."
"I got to go mom. Thanks for breakfast. I see you later." I kiss her cheek and go outside.
I start walking to Community Center.
My phone buzz.
Mom: Please ask King to have dinner with us tonight.
Me: okay
Midway I see Ogi's car moving towards me.
"Hi there stranger. Where are you going." He asks me.
"To school." I say stoically.
"Come with me." He says.
"Why? The bus is free... you know?" I snapped.
He stops the Land Rover, not bothering himself to park it and gets out of the vehicle.
"If you don't go inside I'll carry you."
And runs towards me picking me up.
"I'm going to kill you Ogi." I scream and kick the air.
He puts my seat belt on. He smells good. Cinnamon and honey. Wow.
"Did you thrown up?" He asks me when he enters the car.
"None of your business." I say "If you are forcing me to go with you, at least don't make that kind of questions."
"I'm just worried. You're too skinny and vomiting. I don't know what to think..." I hear the fear in his voice.
"I just had a restless night and my stomach reacted." I try to ease his mind "Talking about food. My mom invited you to dinner tonight."
"Oh yeah. More pasta. Great."
"Is your mom okay with you spending all your free time with me?" I ask.
"What? I'm a man. What is that? You think my mom got that kind of say in my life? Or my father?" He seems nervous.
"Well, you don't work. If they are sponsoring your life it's only fair..." I reply.
"Not that is any of your concern yet, but I got my own money. I just live in my parents house. I know my mom needs to see me and worries about me. That's it." He pauses "Did you saw my parents saying anything to me the other day? In your house?"
"No... Why did you stood between me and your father?" I ask.
"Seriously? Do we need to make another stop in the middle of nowhere to talk this out, yet again?" He tells me, calmly.
"But it's your father... He would never hurt me. I'm like a daughter to him... You must know that. Right?"
"I understand that you don't like me enough to accept the fact that I'm yours and you're mine, but you understand that that's not how I feel about you. I just act accordingly."
"I'm just not use to all that intensity and possessive behaviour. You're too straight forward and honest." I look at him, laying my hand over his "I'm confused and afraid."
Wow. I never thought about this before it came out of my mouth.
"You don't need to be afraid anymore." He simply replied.
I gather my hand and cough.
"So, how is basketball going?" I ask.
"Good. I think Cole wants to kill me every time I score. Other than that, I am good at it and faster than any of them." He smirks.
"Of course you are... You're also the most annoying one." I laugh.
"Shut up... any news from Volleyball girls team?" He asks.
"Yeah. I'm better everyday and McKenzie is tha biatch." I state.
"You are also warmer."
"No I'm not..." I chuckle.
"You know how's the temperature today?"
"I don't know, warm?"
He point at the center of the car. Showing the degrees.
"Wow. I'm not cold... at all. I'm wearing a summer shirt." I confess.
"And still a week to full moon... you'll be hotter than me by then." He informs.
"I am hotter than you..." I pretend not to worry.
"That you are..." he parks the vehicle in the School's parking lot.
7:45
"We're early. Good. Do you have any classes with me today?"
"Only after lunch. Unfortunately. I like your scent. It's soothing..." He smiles teasing me.
"Shut up. Cinnamon and honey." I put my tongue out, making fun of him.
"Let meet our group. They are talking about us." He points.
"Great. I need no drama today..." I exit the car.
"They just think we are weird as friends. Calm down. They won't say anything." He murmurs while we are walking towards them.
"Hey guys. Good to see all of you today. " I say and steal Molly away.
"Are you okay? Your texts were too vague." I ask her whispering.
"I'm shaken by all that 'dead women shenanigans'. I'll be fine." She replied air quoting.
"Thank goodness. I was worried." I hug her.
"Are you and Mr. Hot a thing?"
Wow. In my face.
"What? No. Why?" I gasp, trying to sound surprised.
"You just seem... I don't know... Codependent. I suppose. I never saw you act like that. Certainly not with Cole." She tried to explain.
"King is just an intense guy. Don't worry about it..." I lied.
"That's what I'm saying. You are not listening... You are different. You feed from his energy. It's not just him. You liar." She laughs.
"Molly, I don't know yet. Let just keep this between us. Okay?" I plea.
"Of course. You know I'm your friend before anyone else's. " She hugs me.
"Thank you." I smile and we join the group.
I try not to be so close to him..., but I start to comprehend what he meant by a throbbing pain in the back of the skull.
I shake it off and socialize.
This morning was boring to tell the truth. Which is good. I need to keep my grades.
When we are walking to the cafeteria for lunch.
"I'm starving... " I complain to Molly.
"Me too, I thought that Economics class would never end..."
My body knew before me. I whisper almost inaudibly "Ogi..." and smelled him approaching.
I heard the boys talking and the other girls.
"Good to see you Miss Daisy, I'll take all I can get today, please." I smile at her aging face.
"Okay, waabigwan. Have a nice day." She replied.
"You too. Thank you." I smile with all my face.
I pay the usual $2,65 and go to our habitual table.
We gather, but they all let vacant the seat on my left side.
Shivers down my body when he sits besides me.
"Did you see Mrs Brown shoes?" Madison jokes "Was she a nun, before?"
"With that seethrough blouse, I doubt..." Katie adds.
"You're terrible..." I laughed.
Boys are discussing some football game.
He briefly touches my arm. Thank goodness. My head ache increased drastically.
I reach for his arm and let my hand there for the rest of lunch time.
"Hey, Ziggy Ziggs. Wake up. I know your musky boyfriend is right over there but you could stop staring at his muscles and play volleyball..." McKenzie yells.
"Shut up MethHead!" And dodge the ball she throws at me.
The rest of the practice was me and her atacking each other with that volleyball. Until Ogi came over and calmed me down.
"You're making a scene. Ogimaawe. Please." touched me shoulder and almost whispered to me.
In the looker room all the other girls were quiet and watching us both. I stripped down and hit the showers everyone else.
"What was that?" Asked Molly showering next to me.
"I'm tired of her stupid mouth."
"She is the same as she was before. She mocked you and Cole too and you ignored her remarks." Molly tells me in a low volume.
"That was different." I snapped.
"Different how?"
"I don't know. Just different..."
"You're on edge..." Ogi tells me when we get to the car."McKenzie... is just... Urgh!""You're afraid that people notice your pull towards me. They all already have. Just stop fighting it.""I have no idea of what you are talking about... I mean. We're friends." I say stoically."Well, we don't need to be more than friends... just you keep lying to yourself and that's when your pain grows. Meaning. I got used to it and manage to function without much-needed closeness, but you... you'll find it an impossible task if you deny it even exists." He tells me calmly."When did you become a philosophy master?" I ask."I had to deal with a lot in the past six years. That's it." He shared."I see. So, how weird it would be if I place my hand in your neck?" I ask afraid of sounding desperate."That's an interesting choice, but okay. I wouldn't be offended. Neither would I look too much into it." He says.I immediately place my lef
Buzz buzz buzz6:15Alarm.Get immediately out of bed. I'm fresh as a leaf today. Guess that nap wrapped in Ogi had some positive effects.Great.What am I wearing today? Oversized white shirt, white skinny jeans. Camel cardigan and ankle boots. Wavy beach hair, light make-up but purple lipstick. Purple tote bag.I think I've overdone it today, but I don't care. I love it.Me: Can you come inside? I'm a tiny, little late. Sorry!Ogi: O.k.. C'ya soon. And I'm freaking late. Urgh!7:00"Mom, I'm late." I yell, descending the stairs."I know. Sit down.""Ogi is already here." I smile."And got some awful news." My mom adds."Indeed. I was just telling Mrs. Woods that Sheriff called my father last night to inform that a person that was found dead in Covill motel. it's a man, late 50's. Animal attack." He says."Oh my. That's terrible. Horrible news. What is going on? Rabies?"
"Ogimaa, you had six years to get used to it. I'm seventeen and thought I knew all it was there to know about myself. I'm sorry if this is not easy for me to swallow." I pause " I don't even know if you're not having a psychotic episode and I'm getting convinced of something that is not real."He starts to come back to the car and strip his clothes."Shit." I let out "what if someone sees?""If you don't believe it yourself, even with your family background... Do you think a tourist will believe his or her eyes?""No." I simply reply. He was only with boxers shorts.I don't think anybody is around here anyways. This is a pretty remote access to the woods and the car is really close to the trees."Okay. Here goes nothing." He declares "Take the car keys, my flower."I run to his side and store the keys inside one of my many pockets, zipping it."Okay, just let me kiss you first."I look up to him and
"Your mate was born on a snow moon and Great Spirits Moon. First full moon of the year. He's not white, is he?" My father asked as it was nothing."He's dark brown, almost black. And you?" I ask with shaking hands and voice."I'm plain grey. Like the wonderful Canis Lupus. Just bigger. We thought you wouldn't be like me, since your mom is not Anishinaabe. Looks like she is. Not pure of course, but not as far as it looks." He pause " Pure was an awful word to use. I'm sorry my love." And kisses my mom's hand."That's why we're only having this conversation now?""Yes. Until now, you didn't need to know." He answers "Your mom told me 5 or 6 years ago that little wolf was acting strange. I told her who he was. She also expressed concern about you and him. I wrongly dismissed any imprinting on you. I thought you didn't have enough Anishinaabe blood to be his mate.""Both Grandma and Grandpa are Chippewa descendants, I didn't know that." My mom adds.
"Look. We have super abilities. I'm not joking. We literally can smell every component of that amazing shampoo that you usually use. Sometimes you switch to another, more like a pine tree meets an orange scent. I can see your blood passing through your veins, in your neck, in your wrists. I can hear your lungs and the air entering and exiting. Your heart beating. I can see a gap in your third and fourth right upper teeth and other things that I don't have to tell you."I ruminate on that. "So you have to focus on what you want and ignore the rest. If you are not trained...""She lost it. Probably don't even know what to do. Acting only by instinct. Instinct of a wolf that was born a month ago. This is a mess." He concludes."I don't want to be a mess..." I say sad."You won't be a mess. Not even a hot mess. You were born wolf. You just didn't know. Besides you got me to help you."*-*-*-*-*-*-*Covill is a small t
"I heard that the men that was killed in Covill was a regular client. Is this true? " Hunter asked Tiffany."Yes, known player. He was married and lived in Croftville." Tiffany said.Croftville is another small and unorganized community that is located 3 miles northeast of the city of Grand Marais."Was the wife with him?" I ask."The mistress was with him." She implies.Any connection with the women working at the Diner? I wonder."Animal attack?" Ogi asks."Mrs. Clarkson said that the blood was everywhere." Tiffany says with a sad look on her face."Okay guys. Let's talk about Homecoming Dance and Spirit Week. It is in two weeks. I'm head of the committee. Again and I need help. Any ideas? Theme? Pranks? " I ask."Actually. Spirit Week will mark the beginning of Basketball games, with our game." Cole Cook says " We, man are going to take care of Spirit Week, including the traditional picnic, pep rally and the bonefire.
"That backyard will be for ceremonies and celebrations? You know I won't host a pow wow in my house."He laughs "No. The ways will be the same. You know that you'll be hosting it. Shut up. Just not on that backyard. That will be for us to express our love... you'll see.""I'm sorry for being shocked. I shouldn't.""Calm down. You have until graduation." He smiled " If it was 50 years ago, we were walking into a broken, poor and highly discriminated tribe. We are blessed, Ogimaakwe. And I know that you will be the one I'll look up to everyday. Sharing my life, heart and tradition.""We'll get there when we get there. Just don't impregnate me with your thoughts." I laugh."Not scientifically possible, but I can try...""Shut up." I chuckle, kissing his cheek "let's visit the store where that woman works. Ok?""Okay. I'll be right back." He says getting up to pay.He looks better everyday. Damn!
"Wow. I'm impressed." Katie speaks before anyone."Me too." The others agree."Want to add something, Ogimaa Binesi?" I ask."I will ask for the Sweet Grass, Wiingash, ritual. For strength and kindness. Also, smells good." He pauses. "You are not who I thought you were." He tells Cole "Any of you. I'm glad I met you.""Okay... We all agree. This will be a changing year in our life's." I smile.I was really feeling good about my life and the fact that my friends, not only love me, they also respect me."Thank you for doing this. I know the Elders won't like it but in the end will see it was worthy." I say to King in the car after practice."You'll be the best ogimaakwe ever." He reply."Shut up. Do you drive trucks?" I ask."Yeah, I am not very good with driving it in reverse though." He laughs."Thank you."We were in silence for some time and listening to music."Ogi, should I say something to my pa
Fortunately everyone said exactly the same thing and Logan was with me when I entered the kitchen area, so it was fast to take everyone's statement of the happening.I told Ziigwan to call her mom, she was probably getting worried about the fact that she's not home.I called my mom. She told me that she was going to meet Mrs. Woods at her house to calm her down. I guess not having her husband in town and her daughter being at a crime site would do that to a person."Okay, mom, I love you." She tells her mom before hanging up.
The basketball practice was awesome and any stressful stares or glances died on the court. We are a team. No matter what. In that basketball court we are a team.I'm taking forever taking my shower. I need to clear my head of all the carnal thoughts about her.I stand under the freezing water, steaming when it hits my burning skin, sending vapour to the air.I feel rejuvenated and fresh as a spring leaf.
"Piece of Cake. We even have first period together. Come on, Wolfie let's ignite rumours. You look hot and have no zits on your face." She jokes."Yeah." I simply said.Everyone was looking at us. At her obviously because of her look. At me because I am new and I am walking with her."Zig." I heard a girl call her."Come meet the girls" she tells me, dragging me.
It was a bust. When I got there it was nine pm and she was just laying in her bed in her phone. I could listen to her breathing and heart beat.I returned to my parents house and try to get some sleep. I slept like a pup.At seven was at her house craving to see her. I was talking to Mrs. Woods and trying to calm her about my driving skills when I hear her trotting those stairs."Mom, can we go see Jessica this weekend..." She yells. And ap
