River
"Miss Stephenson, wake up!" Our math teacher, Ms. Davis, shouts at the girl sitting next to me. I give her a gentle shake to wake her up, but as always, I get yelled at for it. I've always been the odd one out, the outsider. I'm the water girl for the football team because I can't play any sports. My two left feet always hold me back. One of the popular girls on the team, Marie, insults me, calling me the "nasty girl" and saying she'll have to scrub her arm until it bleeds to get my "nastiness" off. I'm not sure how I got this reputation as the "nasty girl" in school, but it's been that way for a few years now. Thankfully, this is my last year here. I've already sent in all my college applications and I'm just waiting for the right one to accept me. I look over at my best friend, Sydney, as she defends me against Marie's insults. Sydney tells Marie to go eat pussy and leave me alone. "God, Sydney, do you have to be so vulgar?" I ask her. "Ah, River, don't start with your good girl act. One of us has to show those assholes who's the queen around here, and it definitely won't be you," Sydney retorts. I still can't believe Sydney and I are friends. We're complete opposites. She's the life of the party, speaks her mind without caring what others think, and dresses all in black with black lipstick and nail polish. She's stunning with her long black hair, blue-green eyes, and hourglass figure. Meanwhile, I have reddish-orange hair, ash gray eyes, and I'm a bit on the heavier side, weighing around 150 pounds. Guys are always asking Sydney out, but she turns them down because she's into girls. She's never made me uncomfortable with her sexuality, and if I didn't know her so well, I wouldn't have even known she liked girls. She's only had one girlfriend, and it only lasted for about six months, so maybe it was just a phase and she's still figuring things out. Finally, the bell signaling the end of class rings, and it's time for lunch. Sydney and I head to the cafeteria and join the salad line so I can get myself a salad. After paying the cashier, we move to the pizza station for Sydney to get her pizza. As we wait, a football player in line decides to make a comment about my weight and food choices. "Damn water, girl! Shouldn't you just stick to the salad you have in your hands? You keep eating unhealthy foods like pizza. You're going to get too big to run and fetch me my water." "Thanks for your concern, Arron, but it's unwanted and unnecessary because all I'm eating today is my salad." "You don't have to explain anything to that douchebag," Sydney hisses at me. "I was being sarcastic, Syd." Sydney rolls her eyes at Arron and leads us to our table. Thankfully, I make it to my table without any incidents. Usually, I end up with food spilled on me before reaching my table. "Are you okay, Riv?" Sydney asks me once we're seated. "Yes, I'm used to it by now." "Wow, River Rock just walked in," Sydney tells me, I feel my skin heat up at the mention of his name. Rock, also known as James Martinez, is not only the hottest guy at school, but he's also the quarterback and captain of the football team. Unfortunately, he's also my biggest hater at Scotts High. To make matters worse, his mom is dating my dad. "Hey water girl, go get me some food," Rock said, coming over and sitting down at our table as if he owned it. "Fuck off, Rock," Sydney snapped back, quickly positioning herself between us. She probably thought that would deter him from harassing me. I wanted to get up and get him food just to make him leave me alone, but Sydney wasn't having it. "Sit your ass down," Sydney growled at me. "Just let me do this, Syd, so I can eat in peace today," I pleaded. "You're going to eat in peace anyway. I'll make sure of it," Sydney said through gritted teeth. She didn't realize what she was starting when she stood up for me. Surprisingly, Rock got up and walked over to get his own food, then joined his girlfriend and the other football players. I finally got to eat my food in peace for the rest of the lunch hour. Once the bell rang, Sydney and I headed to our next class. We made it through our last couple of classes and then it was time to go out on the football field to make sure the team had plenty of water. As I walked onto the field, I couldn't help but entertain the thought of putting laxative tablets in their water. It would be interesting to see how well they practiced while having to run to the bathroom every five minutes. "Yo water girl, get your ass over here with the damn waters!" Damion, the linebacker, yelled at me, snapping me out of my daydream. I knew I wasn't the only water girl out here, but I was the only one who got picked on. I couldn't understand why they targeted me. Unlike Tiffany, who dry humped Rock's leg while giving him water, I was quiet and kept to myself. Walking towards the table, I placed more water glasses down and then approached the guys who were waiting to get on the field, asking if they wanted any water. "It's about damn time, water girl," most of the guys said, but there were a few freshmen who thanked me. However, I knew that would change once they heard how the other guys referred to me and how they treated me. They would soon start doing the same. Once the current group of guys headed onto the field, the ones who were already on the field came off, and I repeated the same process for them. I poured water into the mouths of those who wanted it and got shoved aside by those who didn't. God, I really didn't know why I was doing this. I hated football. But it was either this or listen to my dad complain about me not doing anything. At the end of practice, I finish packing up and get ready to go to the locker room. Suddenly, Rock and his friend Damion approach me from behind and push me so hard that I fall, causing the bottles in my hands to go flying across the field. "Oh, damn water girl, I didn't see you standing there," Rock says, pretending not to notice me. He then bends down to help me up, but I slap his hand away. "Now, now, River, is that any way to treat your soon-to-be stepbrother?" Rock chuckles. God, I hope not. "My dad will never marry your mother. He loved my mother too much," I spit at him, hoping to shut him up. But instead, he sees red. Rock lifts me off the ground by my shirt, pulling me into his body. "You listen to me, you little bitch," he growls, his anger evident. "James Martinez, put River down right now," Coach barks at him, coming to my rescue. Rock forcefully throws me to the ground, and I land hard on my butt. Once everyone heads to the locker room, I slowly get up and start gathering the bottles that had scattered earlier, putting them back in the bags. Coach must have stayed behind because he helps me with the bottles. "You know, Ms. Darby, you really shouldn't let those boys treat you that way," he advises me. I know I shouldn't, but I really don't have any choice. "Thanks, Coach," I say gratefully. He helps me up and hands me the bags to carry to the locker room. "River, I've known your father for a long time, and I don't think he would be too happy to know how bad things are for you at school." "No offense, coach, but you must not know my father as well as you think you do because my dad couldn't care less." I walk into the locker room without saying another word. After finishing everything, I head out to my 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee that my dad got me last year after I found out he was dating Rocks' mom, the one person who seems to hate me as much as my father does. Ms. Gabriela and my parents were college friends and remained friends even after my mom did what she did when I was five years old. I barely get into the cab when my phone rings with my dad's name on the screen. I answer it on the second ring. "Hello, dad." "Hello, River," Dad replies. "We're meeting at the restaurant tonight. I want you to go home and dress appropriately." "Can I skip this one, Dad? I have a ton of homework to do tonight." "River, don't start with your antisocial nonsense tonight, young lady. Go home and get dressed. Gabriela and I will wait for you. I need you to go to Gabriela's and pick up the two younger kids. James is already on his way from football practice." Are you kidding? "Yes, sir. I'll get right on that." Great, I have to play house with the Martinez's tonight after dealing with the jerk Rock all day. I pull up to the house and quickly run up the stairs to my bedroom, where I find a pair of slacks and a blue blouse along with my dress boots. Then I rush back to the jeep and drive three blocks to the Martinez house. As soon as I park in the driveway, the two younger Martinez kids come running out the door and towards my jeep. "It's frustrating that their older brother is such a jerk, especially when the two younger kids are so sweet. If it was just the two of them, I probably wouldn't have such a problem with my dad dating their mom. "Hey River," Jessica, the second oldest Martinez kid, greets me as she gets into the front passenger seat of the jeep. "She's about 15 now, so she just started high school. She knows what it's like to be targeted by mean kids. The difference is her brother is the quarterback of the high school football team, so once people find out, they leave her alone. Then there's the adorable little guy, Abe, the little blonde-haired beauty. He's only 8 years old, but he's already fending off girls. He looks just like his older brother. "Snapping out of my thoughts, I turn and greet the two who got into my jeep. "Hello guys, how was your day at school?" "It was okay," the kids say. "So, do we know why we're going to have dinner with my mom and your dad?" Jessica asks me. "Your guess is as good as mine," I tell her. Once we arrive at the restaurant, we all get out of the jeep and I hand my keys to the valet. As we walk towards the entrance, we see Rock walking in with none other than the head cheerleader and his longtime girlfriend, Amy Smith. "Well, hello water girl, long time no see," Amy sneers. "Do you work here or something?" She asks me, seemingly serious, but I can't believe she's that clueless, right? "Have you hit your head one too many times?" Jessica asks Amy, trying to hold back a laugh. I struggle to keep a straight face. Amy looks over at Rock for help, and he leans in and whispers something in her ear. "Oh, you poor thing," she tells Rock, and they walk into the restaurant as if we're not even there. I roll my eyes and follow them inside. Abe places his hand in mine and whispers, "You're much prettier and smarter than she is." "Aw, thanks buddy," I reply. My dad pays more attention to the three unrelated kids than to me, his own daughter. To make up for it, Gabriela gives me a big hug and compliments my appearance. I really like Gabriela, but I don't like her son. "How are you doing?" I ask her as I step back and sit down beside her and Abe. "Sweetheart, I'm doing very well. How are things at school?" she asks, fully aware of the difficulties I face daily. She doesn't know that most of it is caused by her son, but that's a conversation for another time. Once we all order our drinks, my dad stands up, capturing everyone's attention. He clears his throat and looks at Gabriela. "Gabriela Maria Martinez, you are my best friend, my true love, my forever person. I can't imagine being with anyone else. So, Gabriel Martínez, will you do me the honor of being my wife?" He doesn't even bother to kneel. Gabriela, of course, cries and says yes to my dad. I hear Jessica gasp in shock, and Abe claps his hands together. Rock is furious. I agree with him. Wow. I would never agree with that jerk. "Are you kidding me right now?" Rock hisses through his teeth. "You can't marry him, Mom. Don't get me wrong, Mr. Jim, I think you're cool, but I can't be known as her stepbrother," he says, pointing a finger at me. Funny, that's not what he was saying earlier today. "That's enough, James Martinez. Now apologize to River," Gabriela tells her son, and my father has the audacity to tell her it's okay. "I'm sure Rock has a reason for being mean to River." What the heck is going on here? Why has my father turned against me these last couple of years? I congratulate Gabriela and give her a kiss on the cheek. "Now I must leave. It seems my father doesn't want me here." Gabriela smiles at me. "That's not true, Riv, and even if it was, I want you here for this big day." "Thank you for the invite, but I really need to leave," I tell her and walk out the door. I grab my jeep and head for the house where I'm not really wanted anymore. My dad is someone I would never expect Gabriela to want to marry. He is so cold, self-centered, and arrogant. As soon as I get home, I make my way to my room and text Sydney right away. Me: My dad asked Gabriela to marry him tonight. My life is over. Sydney: What? Don't be so dramatic. You like Gabriela, right? 🤷♀️ Me: It's not her, Sydney. It's her son. He will make my life hell, and you know it. Sydney: You have to stop letting him win, River. You've been doing it our whole life. He shouldn't have power over you. Note From Author: Hey Guys let me know what you think so far!@crystalsteadman 2023Rock What the hell, Water Girl stole the show? I should be the one leaving right now, not her. “Amy, say your goodnights to my mom and Jim. We're leaving too.” “What no Rock? You should stay and let me treat you to a steak and a glass of wine. Besides, don't ruin this for your mom and the other kids like River just did.” I glance at my mom and see the sadness in her eyes, so I decide to stay. I mean, come on, Jim is offering steak and wine. Who can pass that up? “James, tell me how school is going, son. I feel like I never get to see you anymore since football season started.” “It's fine, Mom. We're kicking ass in football as usual.” I don't know why my mom thinks making small talk at the table is still a thing. Because it's definitely not. I endure the boring dinner with my mom and Jim. Once it's over, Amy and I head to a party at a friend's house. “Rock, my man, you made it.” Speedy says. “Of course, Speedy. It wouldn't be a party without me,” I tell my buddy. "Wow, such a bi
River It's Saturday morning, and unsurprisingly, my dad is not at home. I'm pretty sure he's at Martinez's place. Maybe he'll even move in with them and leave me here alone in this house. One can only hope. Suddenly, I hear a loud noise coming from downstairs, so I go out of my room to see what's happening. "What are you doing here?" I ask Rock when I reach the bottom of the stairs and see him and some of his football friends carrying a bed. "Hey sis, I'm home," he says. What the heck? "What do you mean you're home, Rock? Why are you bringing a bed into my house? Where is my dad?" "We're moving in, roomie... and your dad is at the other house helping my mom with her things." Oh my god, this can't be happening. "What room am I going into, River? This is getting a little heavy," Rock asks. "Um, take it back out the door and put it in the room it came from," I tell him, just as my dad walks through the door. "River Nichole Darby, that is no way to talk to your soon-to-be stepb
Rock "Are you all settled in, buddy?" Mom asks when she enters the room, which is now mine at the Darby's house. "Yeah, I still have a few things to unpack," I reply. I glance around the room and notice that all my posters are up on the wall. I've also replaced the old, stuffy sheets and comforter on the queen-size bed. The guys and I went out and bought some new ones. It's more my style, especially with the credit card Jim gave me. How cool is it that I have my own credit card while his own daughter has to work for her money, on top of school and everything she does for the team? "Loser!" I say jokingly. "That's good to know," Mom says. "Well, I'm going to head out. I have to work the night shift at the hospital tonight." "Hey Mom, do you still have to work two jobs now that you're marrying Jim?" I ask. "No, probably not, but I enjoy my jobs," she replies. "Okay, it's just that you work so hard." "I'm not marrying Jim for his money
River "Hey dad, how's your trip going?" "Don't 'hey dad' me, River. Why on earth did you think it was a good idea to throw a party? You've never done anything like this before. Is this your way of rebelling because Gab and the kids moved in?" "I didn't throw the party, dad. I was at work." "Oh, don't you dare try to blame Rock... River?" Of course, he doesn't believe a word I'm saying. I give up. "What do you want my punishment to be while you're gone for two weeks?" "Don't you dare talk back to me. Put Rock on the phone." "Why, dad?" "Do it, River, or this will be even more difficult for you." "Is this some kind of joke?" "Never mind, River, I will call his cell phone myself." "Oh, look, River, your dad's calling me," Rock says from the door. He must have followed me to my room. "Good evening, Mr. Darby, how's your trip going? I'm terribly sorry about the party. I was assured it would be okay." Rock listens to dad for a few minutes. "Yes, sir, we both can do that. We both
Rock She believes she's being clever by inviting Brody and Jessica to eat with her, but she won't be able to take my friends or family away from me. She will always be nothing more than the water girl. Earlier today, I felt sorry for her when she got covered in food, but that won't happen again. "Hey water girl, can you get us something to drink?" I turn around and taunt River, enjoying the satisfaction of seeing her tense up. "I'm off the clock, jerk," she whispers back at me. "Oh, someone has grown a backbone since hanging out with Brody," I remark. It seems like I'll have to teach her a few lessons. "Dude, come on, man, leave her alone tonight. Let her eat her food in peace," Brody intervenes, and that angers me. I don't think I want my football buddy hanging out with my soon-to-be sister anymore. He seems to forget where his loyalty lies. But I'll deal with that another time. "Are you ready to leave?" I hear River ask her group at the table. Just as she's about to get up, I
River River: please don't panic, but I believe Rock injured his leg during practice today. He asked me not to inform you just yet, so I suggest waiting before reaching out to him. Gabriela: oh my gosh, what are they doing for him? Will they take him to the hospital? River: take a deep breath, Gab. The medical team is currently attending to him. They are preparing to transport him off the field, and yes, it's likely that he will need to go to the hospital. I will update you as soon as the coach informs me of more details. Gabriela: thank you for letting me know, River. Please keep me updated. River: I will. And please don't mention to him that I told you. He didn't want you to find out just yet because he didn't want you to worry. Gabriela: I promise I won't, sweetheart. I observe from the sidelines as the team places Rock onto a cart to take him back to the locker room. It doesn't look good for him; his leg appears to be severely twisted. Once he's off the field, I resume my d
Rock I'm in a lot of pain today and I can't take my medication until River arrives in about twenty minutes. She always takes her time, just to annoy me. Lately, she's been getting on my nerves a lot and it's really frustrating. The guys have been texting me all day, checking up on me. It's game night tonight, and I've never missed a game since I started playing football. But now I have to miss the next six weeks because I wasn't focused during practice yesterday. Instead, I was too busy thinking about Brody and River. I don't understand why I care that Brody is dating the water girl. I can't stand her, but I don't want to see her with one of my friends. The front door opens and I hear footsteps approaching. "Is that you, water girl?" "Nope, someone here to kill you." I wouldn't be surprised. "Very funny. Just come in and get me some water so I can take my medication." "You're not in a position to tell me what to do, Rock. So calm down. I'll get your water." Wow, River has real
River "Hey River," Brody calls out to me as I step out of my jeep. "Hello Brody." "How's Rock? I tried texting him over the weekend, but he never answered." "Besides driving me crazy, he's doing fine. His medication has him sleeping a lot." And trying to kiss me? "I'm sure he would enjoy you guys stopping by after classes are over. He's going out of his mind sitting at the house all day by himself." "Yeah, I'll tell the guys we should all go over there and cheer our captain up. Well, I've got to run. I'll talk to you later... Maybe we can get a bite to eat later." Okay, that wasn't weird at all. I don't understand guys sometimes. Brody's behavior towards me has changed since Rock got hurt, and I don't understand why. ... whatever, I really don't have time for boys and their wishy-washy attitudes. I make my way into the building that holds my first classroom and walk over to where Sydney is waiting for me. "What took you so long?" Sydney scolds me. "I got stopped by Brody outsi
“Ha-pi-bird-day, ha-pi-bird-day to Liam. Ha-pi-bird-day to me.” Liam is singing the birthday song along with us. It’s so hard to believe my little tiny baby is 2 today. It’s been a good two years. Rock and I are in our third year of college and Rock got an offer to the NFL. He will be a Chicago Bears come September. I, on the other hand, will stay in college and moving on to my elective. I have decided I want to be a therapist. If I could help at least one person who has gone through the hell I have been through will make it all worth it. “It’s Wiams bird-day, isn’t it, ma-ma?” “It is Liam’s birthday. How old is Liam going to be?” I ask my little guy. “Wiam be 2. Ma-ma be 5,” Liam tells me, then giggles. “Who told you that?” I ask, laughing at him. “Da-da.” Liam tells me, pointing at Rock. I look over at Rock, and he laughs. “Who’s ready for cake?” Rock asks Liam. “Nice save.” I tell him and we cut Liam his cake, then I cut everyone their slice
Rock We are walking around the streets of Mexico trying to find Liam. I’m about to lose my shit when we spot a woman holding a baby sitting at a fruit stand. We run over to the woman and River tells the woman to turn the baby around so we can see the baby’s face. The woman does as we ask, and River cries out in joy. She snatches Liam up in her arms and checks him over, making sure he doesn’t have any wounds on him. Jim is a really stupid fucking bad guy. This is his second kidnapping and demanding of things and the second time the fuck wad was arrested. I grab River and Liam up in my arms and hold them as tight as I can without hurting them. “Let’s go home, baby.” The officer that came with us escorts us back to the police station where they have Jim held. We are told since he was caught here in Mexico with Liam that he will await trial here and more than likely service his sentence out here. Hopefully, t
River We are sitting in our home a couple hours later waiting for someone to tell us if they have found our little boy or not. I knew my father was a psycho and he would do anything to hurt my mother and me, but I never thought he would hurt my child. His grandchild. But I should have known he would do just about anything to hurt me, right? “River, honey, would you like a glass of tea or a cup of hot chocolate?” Mom comes into the living room from the kitchen and asks me. “Cup of hot chocolate would be great.” Mom smiles at me, then heads back into the kitchen to get my hot chocolate. Rock is pacing a hole in the floor and it’s just making me even more nervous. “Rock! Sit down, please.” I ask him, so he does. Then grabs my hand and squeezes it. “I’m sorry Riv.” He tells me. “What is there for you to be sorry about Rock?” I ask him. “Everything River. The way I treated you when
Rock “Hey mom, can you come over to the house and meet with the alarm system company? They will be there around 11 this morning.” I call and ask my mom as we are getting ourselves ready to head to school. Jim broke into our house, so I called the alarm company to install an alarm. They offered to install new door systems for free since we're first-time customers. I also bought a ring camera to monitor our front door. I get off the phone with my mom and help River get Liam into his car seat holder in the back seat of our new family car. “Are you ready for your first day back to school?” I ask Riv. “No, I don’t want to leave Liam with strangers.” She tells me. “Well, baby, at least it’s at the same place we are going to be at and we can check on him at lunchtime and in between classes, if you like.” I told her. River nods her head at me, then gets into the car and we head to the col
River Rock, Liam, and I are finally getting out of the hospital today. Mom went and got me a car. She says it's safer for the baby than getting another Jeep, and when Liam gets older we can ride around in Rock's jeep. I didn't argue with her. So that's what we are taking our baby home in today. Rock and I haven't really talked about where we are going to stay so for now I'm going to stay with my mom and Gab, because I cannot stay in the dorms with a baby and Rock has a shit ton of guys living with him so his apartment is out. We make it to our neighborhood but instead of parking at our house, Rock parks at his old family home. "Rock, what are you doing? I don't want to walk with Liam from here to moms." Rock just smiles at me. "Riv trust me baby, you're going to like this." Rock helps me out of the car then grabs Liam's car seat and heads toward the house we are parked in front of so they must be throwing a welcome home party and wanted t
Rock It’s been a few months since our Christmas break and River told me she would marry me. River quickly informed our moms that the wedding would have to wait until after Liam was born. I don’t blame her because she is getting pretty big. She’s in her last two months of the little guys arriving. I’m trying really hard to keep this brave face on for her, but truth I’m fucking scared to death of what’s coming. We are so young and I’m so afraid we are going to fuck something up. I know we have our mom’s support and my mom gave me our little house myself and my sibling grew up in and the boys and I have been going on the weekends and fixing it up. I want to surprise River with it when the baby is born. But I still can’t keep from thinking, is this the right move for us right now? River and I are heading to her last ultrasound before the baby is born, so we get to see the little guy one last time. Then the next time will be for real life. We get into the doctor’s office and have to wait
River It’s our two week Christmas holiday from school, so Rock and I are at mom and Gabs house these two weeks and Rock is being super sweet and tentative to me. The first day he bought me donuts and hot chocolate, the second day he bought me a thing of fruit and the list goes on of things he has done for me. It’s the day before Christmas Eve and Rock has talked me into going and seeing a movie and then getting a bite to eat. “So what movie are we going to watch?” I ask him, but he is being tight-lipped. But I’m going to assume either the movie is in some fancy theater or he is taking me to a fancy restaurant, but why do either? Ugh, men are so confusing. I really don’t even know why I’m mad at him anymore. He has been so sweet and tentative with me the last month and a half. He finally got to feel Liam Alex Martinaze kick for the first time last night. He was so stoked he kicked to him saying his name. Come to find out, the name I picked out was the name Rock wrote. So that should
Rock River has been home from the hospital for a couple weeks now. Mom keeps me updated on her progress daily. She also told me what the baby was going to be and the idea River came up with about us putting a name in a hat and her picking the best name out of the bunch. River is supposed to come home today and start back to school on Monday. So I’m sitting in her dorm room waiting on her and Sydney to get back. Surprisingly, Sydney let me into their room. She’s not my biggest fan. I’m sitting in Rivers’ room when I hear the front door open and close. “Rock, a little help, please.” I hear Sydney yell. What the hell. I walk out of the bedroom. “What’s up?” I ask Sydney and see right away what’s going on. River and her crutches are a little too much for Sydney. “I told you I have it.” River snaps. “River!” Sydney snaps back. I can’t help but laugh at them. “You can leave now, Rock.” River tells me and I just give her the stank eye. “You’re not pushing me away so easily this time, R
River “He doesn’t want the baby.” I yell at mom and Gab, so mad at Rock. I really didn’t mean to rat him out like that, but I’m fed up with his hot and cold crap. I’m having a baby. If he doesn’t want to be a part of this baby’s life, that’s fine, but that does not give him the right to tell me who I can and who I can’t tell about this child. I jump into my jeep and get the heck out of there before he can come and demand crap from me again. I’m halfway home when my phone rings. It’s Sydney so I answer it. “Hello.” I answer. “Hey how is your Sunday going?” She asks me. “Well, I’m on my way home because, as always, Rock has to be an ass about everything.” I told her. “What do you mean he’s an ass?” Sydney asks me. “Well, I guess his mom said something to him about the baby or something I’m not really sure. But he dragged me to my room demanding to know who all I told and was mad that I told anyone before him. So I got kinda mad and stormed out of my room and downstairs and right be
