River
"Hey dad, how's your trip going?" "Don't 'hey dad' me, River. Why on earth did you think it was a good idea to throw a party? You've never done anything like this before. Is this your way of rebelling because Gab and the kids moved in?" "I didn't throw the party, dad. I was at work." "Oh, don't you dare try to blame Rock... River?" Of course, he doesn't believe a word I'm saying. I give up. "What do you want my punishment to be while you're gone for two weeks?" "Don't you dare talk back to me. Put Rock on the phone." "Why, dad?" "Do it, River, or this will be even more difficult for you." "Is this some kind of joke?" "Never mind, River, I will call his cell phone myself." "Oh, look, River, your dad's calling me," Rock says from the door. He must have followed me to my room. "Good evening, Mr. Darby, how's your trip going? I'm terribly sorry about the party. I was assured it would be okay." Rock listens to dad for a few minutes. "Yes, sir, we both can do that. We both deserve to be punished for our stunt." I bite down hard on my tongue to keep from saying something I shouldn't. Rock talks to my father a little longer, then hands his phone to me. "You and Rock are to clean the entire inside and outside of the house. Then you are to paint the fence. It needs a fresh coat of paint. And River, you need to thank your stepbrother for taking some of the blame for your mistake. Next time, I won't be so lenient with my punishment." "Yes, sir," I grit out. "Goodnight, sir. I have school tomorrow." "Get out of my room, Rock." I point to the door, and when he finally walks through the door, I shut and lock it. At least I still have some privacy. A few minutes later, I hear a knock on my door. "Yes," I answer. Jessica and Brody enter my bedroom, the only two people I trust besides Sydney. Brody apologizes for not being able to keep everything under control, but I interrupt him because it's not his fault and he shouldn't feel the need to apologize or fix anything. "Thank you for trying to help, Brody, but this isn't your responsibility," I tell him. "And it's not yours either, River. It's my idiotic brother's fault, and I will tell my mother what he did and how he got you in trouble with your dad," Jessica says. "Oh, Jessica, that's very kind of you, but it will only make things worse with my dad. He enjoys punishing me whenever he can because I'm not the son he wanted. He will always take Rock's side over mine. I wouldn't be surprised if the only reason he's marrying your mother is so he can have the son he always wanted. Anyway, we all have school tomorrow, so we should go to bed. I'll clean the house in the morning before heading to school," I explain. "It's already been taken care of," Brody informs me. "Thank you, Brody." "Anytime," he tells me, then leans down and kisses me on the cheek. "I'll see you at school tomorrow." "See ya." Once Brody leaves the room, I inform Jessica that I'm going to take a shower. "Feel free to watch some TV while I'm gone." I gather my clothes and head to the bathroom. I knock on the door to make sure nobody is inside since we only have one bathroom besides my dad's bedroom and the half bath downstairs. There is no response. The door is unlocked, so I open it and find Rock in there, naked and about to get into the shower. "Oh crap, I'm sorry I knocked, but there was no answer." "It's okay, water girl. You know you like what you see. Want to join me? I can show you what a real man feels like." "In your dreams, Rock. Besides, if that's what a real man is packing," I say, pointing to his private area, "then I think I can do better on my own." "Fuck you, water girl," I hear Rock yell as I shut the door on him. I head to my dad's room to take a shower. He's not here, so he'll never know. I'm in the shower, but all I can think about is Rock and his package. I wasn't lying when I said I could do better on my own if that's what he's working with. But I wasn't referring to it being small because that cocky jerk is definitely not lacking in that department. I would never tell him that though. 🏈🏈🏈 The following day at school was brutal. It felt like I had committed a crime instead of just breaking up a party. It wasn't even me who called the cops, but they always find a way to pick on me. As I was picking up my books from the floor, where one of the boys from the team had knocked me down, Sydney and Brody approached me. They asked if I was okay. I sarcastically replied, "Yes, I'm just peachy. Let's just go to lunch and hope it's better." Sydney suggested that she and I go sit at our table while Brody gets us lunch. I hesitated, not wanting to let them think they have won every time they do something to me. But I couldn't show weakness, so I agreed. Once I made it to my table without any hiccups, I thought I would be fine. But as soon as I sat down, the kids at the surrounding tables started throwing their food at me. And of course, it had to be spaghetti and meatball day. By the time I left the lunchroom, I was soaked from head to toe with spaghetti sauce. Rock noticed my state and asked, "Shit, River, what the hell happened to you?" I replied, "Like you had nothing to do with this." "River, this time I didn't do it. Let me take you somewhere and help you clean up," Rock says. "Get your hands off me, Rock!" I yell, running off to the bathroom. A few minutes later, Rock enters the bathroom. "Damnit, River, let me help you with this." "Why would you want to help me, Rock? Any other time, you would be laughing at my expense," I retort. "I admit I'm an asshole to you most of the time, but even this is too much for me," Rock confesses. Sydney walks into the bathroom, holding clean clothes. "What the hell are you doing here, Rock? Haven't you caused enough damage today?" "Contrary to what you believe, Sydney, I had nothing to do with this," Rock defends himself. Sydney looks at me, and I shrug my shoulders, unsure of what to believe. "Just leave, Rock. We can handle it from here," Sydney tells him. After Rock leaves, Sydney asks, "What was that about?" "I don't know. He says he had nothing to do with this. That it even goes too far for him," I reply. "Do you believe him?" "I think I do." "Okay, let's start with your hair. Get it cleaned up, and then we'll change your clothes." It takes us thirty minutes to clean the mess out of my hair, causing me to miss my entire lunch and half of my fourth period. "Ms. Darby, is there a reason you're fifteen minutes late to my class?" the teacher asks. "I spilled something on my clothes, so I had to go home and get new ones. It took longer than I expected," I explain, and the whole classroom bursts into laughter. "Freak," someone mutters as I walk past them. 🏈🏈🏈 I'm hanging out with Brody after school, discussing our plans to grab pizza at our favorite pizza parlor. Just then, Sydney and Jessica come out of the building. "Hey Sydney, Jessica, do you guys want to join us for pizza?" I ask. "Heck yeah, I'm always up for pizza," Sydney replies. "Jess, what about you?" I ask Jessica. "Sure," she says. "Hey, where are you going, Jessica?" Rock asks his sister. "I'm going to eat pizza with River and them," Jessica answers. "Not without me, you're not," Rock insists. Jessica looks at me, and I just shrug my shoulders. It seems like we'll have to get along at some point in this situation. "I'm taking my Jeep to the pizza place. Jessica, Sydney, do you want to ride with me?" I offer. "Of course," they both agree. We all meet up at the restaurant, and to our surprise, there are more people than just Brody and Rock in Rock's truck. "What the hell is this?" Sydney growls. "I told her, 'Another way for Rock to torture me.' We girls make our way to our table. Brody comes over a minute later. 'I'm sorry River, I didn't know he was going to invite the entire team with us.' 'It's fine. You guys just sit at a different table, so the temptation to make fun of me won't be so strong for the jerks.' 'They can sit over there, but I came here with you, not them. I just got stuck riding with them,' Brody protests. I smiled at him. 'Well, sit down then,' I tell him. We order our pizza and drinks. Then we sit at our booth and tell jocks. It's really nice hanging around Brody. He's such a breath of fresh air. I even think I might be falling for him. Who knew I would ever like a football player. 'So, Jessica, any guys getting your attention at school these days?' Sydney asks her. 'One or two,' Jessica says with a twinkle in her eyes. Jessica followed in her brother's footsteps. She made the cheerleading squad and we've noticed she's been looking at some of the juniors. It's actually kinda cute. I just hope she doesn't turn as shallow as the others. 'So, Jess, how's the squad treating you?' I ask her, and she gives me a look. 'Uh oh, that's bad?' I ask her. 'It wasn't too bad at first. Then my brother dumped the head cheerleader, and now she's making my life hell,' Jessica shrugs her shoulders like it's no big deal. One more thing Rock gets to screw up without consequences.Rock She believes she's being clever by inviting Brody and Jessica to eat with her, but she won't be able to take my friends or family away from me. She will always be nothing more than the water girl. Earlier today, I felt sorry for her when she got covered in food, but that won't happen again. "Hey water girl, can you get us something to drink?" I turn around and taunt River, enjoying the satisfaction of seeing her tense up. "I'm off the clock, jerk," she whispers back at me. "Oh, someone has grown a backbone since hanging out with Brody," I remark. It seems like I'll have to teach her a few lessons. "Dude, come on, man, leave her alone tonight. Let her eat her food in peace," Brody intervenes, and that angers me. I don't think I want my football buddy hanging out with my soon-to-be sister anymore. He seems to forget where his loyalty lies. But I'll deal with that another time. "Are you ready to leave?" I hear River ask her group at the table. Just as she's about to get up, I
River River: please don't panic, but I believe Rock injured his leg during practice today. He asked me not to inform you just yet, so I suggest waiting before reaching out to him. Gabriela: oh my gosh, what are they doing for him? Will they take him to the hospital? River: take a deep breath, Gab. The medical team is currently attending to him. They are preparing to transport him off the field, and yes, it's likely that he will need to go to the hospital. I will update you as soon as the coach informs me of more details. Gabriela: thank you for letting me know, River. Please keep me updated. River: I will. And please don't mention to him that I told you. He didn't want you to find out just yet because he didn't want you to worry. Gabriela: I promise I won't, sweetheart. I observe from the sidelines as the team places Rock onto a cart to take him back to the locker room. It doesn't look good for him; his leg appears to be severely twisted. Once he's off the field, I resume my d
Rock I'm in a lot of pain today and I can't take my medication until River arrives in about twenty minutes. She always takes her time, just to annoy me. Lately, she's been getting on my nerves a lot and it's really frustrating. The guys have been texting me all day, checking up on me. It's game night tonight, and I've never missed a game since I started playing football. But now I have to miss the next six weeks because I wasn't focused during practice yesterday. Instead, I was too busy thinking about Brody and River. I don't understand why I care that Brody is dating the water girl. I can't stand her, but I don't want to see her with one of my friends. The front door opens and I hear footsteps approaching. "Is that you, water girl?" "Nope, someone here to kill you." I wouldn't be surprised. "Very funny. Just come in and get me some water so I can take my medication." "You're not in a position to tell me what to do, Rock. So calm down. I'll get your water." Wow, River has real
River "Hey River," Brody calls out to me as I step out of my jeep. "Hello Brody." "How's Rock? I tried texting him over the weekend, but he never answered." "Besides driving me crazy, he's doing fine. His medication has him sleeping a lot." And trying to kiss me? "I'm sure he would enjoy you guys stopping by after classes are over. He's going out of his mind sitting at the house all day by himself." "Yeah, I'll tell the guys we should all go over there and cheer our captain up. Well, I've got to run. I'll talk to you later... Maybe we can get a bite to eat later." Okay, that wasn't weird at all. I don't understand guys sometimes. Brody's behavior towards me has changed since Rock got hurt, and I don't understand why. ... whatever, I really don't have time for boys and their wishy-washy attitudes. I make my way into the building that holds my first classroom and walk over to where Sydney is waiting for me. "What took you so long?" Sydney scolds me. "I got stopped by Brody outsi
Rock I'm finally back in school after spending weeks on the couch due to my injured leg. It feels good to be back on the field, even if I can't do much besides throwing the ball. I still have to use crutches to get around, so the coach says I can't practice or play until the doctor clears me from using them. But honestly, I'm just relieved to be out of the house and off the couch. I was getting so bored that I even started flirting with the water girl. "Hey, Rock! Long time no see, man. I didn't think you were ever coming back to the field. We really need you out there. That rookie is making too many mistakes, and we've been losing too many games this year, bro," Speedy says, coming up beside me and giving me a fist bump. "Unfortunately, it's still going to be a few weeks before I can get back on that field, Speedy," I reply, making him groan. "Is it really that bad, bro?" "Fuck, man, you have no idea," he tells me. "Hi, Speedy. Hi, Rock. Do either of you want any water?" Tiffany
River I run out of my room and down the stairs to my father’s study, where I know he will be with a bourbon in hand. “Why did you lie to me all these year’s father? Why did you tell me she left us because of me?” My father just looks at me like I have lost my mind. “You don’t want to come at me, little girl, because I will hurt your feelings worse than knowing your pieces of shit mother didn’t leave you for drugs.” “Why didn’t you just kick me out with her, I ask him?” “Because that bitch wasn’t getting a dime of my money and I knew if you went with her, I would have to pay that bitch half of my pay. But River, didn’t you have a good life? Here you have a jeep, a roof over your head and food to eat. Forgive me for not being here because I must work.” “No, father, let's be real with each other for once. You are never here because you can’t stand to be in the same house as me. You keep me as a go fuck you to my mother. But we both know you hated me more than you did her? But wh
Rock "I need to find my mom," River declares, bursting into my room without warning. "River, have you forgotten how to knock?" I retorted, annoyed. "Forget it, Rock. You always enter my room without permission, regardless of whether I'm decent or not. Get up and come with me." "Are you seriously demanding that I do something for you, River?" "Yes, Rock, I am demanding," she asserts, and damn, it's turning me on, but she still won't let me touch her because of Brody. I approach her and wrap my arms around her waist, pulling her closer. "I'll help you, but only if you do something for me." "Rock!" she exclaims, pushing me away. "I'm not having sex with you just so you'll assist me in finding my mom. I'll just ask Sydney for help." "Come here, Riv. I just want a kiss, nothing more, and then we'll find your mom." She places her hands on my forehead and pushes me away. "Rock, you're such a jerk," she says, walking out the door. Wel
River "My mom is back in my life," I share with my therapists. "How do you feel about that?" she asks. "I'm not sure yet. It's still a bit strange to have her back in my life, especially knowing that it was my father's fault, not mine." "What do you mean?" my therapist inquires. Ugh, it frustrates me when she does that. "My mother left our family because my father constantly gave her drugs and made her an addict. My father wanted to reconnect with his high school sweetheart, but she was already married. There's a suspicion that my father may have done something to Rock's dad, according to my mom and Rock." "That's a serious accusation," she responds skeptically. "No kidding," I reply sarcastically. "Alright, let's shift gears and talk about work. Have you returned to work yet?" "Yes, but I still experience extreme anxiety." "Is the medication I prescribed helping at all?" "Yes, but sometimes it feels like the dosage may not be high enough." "Well, I can prescribe a slightl
“Ha-pi-bird-day, ha-pi-bird-day to Liam. Ha-pi-bird-day to me.” Liam is singing the birthday song along with us. It’s so hard to believe my little tiny baby is 2 today. It’s been a good two years. Rock and I are in our third year of college and Rock got an offer to the NFL. He will be a Chicago Bears come September. I, on the other hand, will stay in college and moving on to my elective. I have decided I want to be a therapist. If I could help at least one person who has gone through the hell I have been through will make it all worth it. “It’s Wiams bird-day, isn’t it, ma-ma?” “It is Liam’s birthday. How old is Liam going to be?” I ask my little guy. “Wiam be 2. Ma-ma be 5,” Liam tells me, then giggles. “Who told you that?” I ask, laughing at him. “Da-da.” Liam tells me, pointing at Rock. I look over at Rock, and he laughs. “Who’s ready for cake?” Rock asks Liam. “Nice save.” I tell him and we cut Liam his cake, then I cut everyone their slice
Rock We are walking around the streets of Mexico trying to find Liam. I’m about to lose my shit when we spot a woman holding a baby sitting at a fruit stand. We run over to the woman and River tells the woman to turn the baby around so we can see the baby’s face. The woman does as we ask, and River cries out in joy. She snatches Liam up in her arms and checks him over, making sure he doesn’t have any wounds on him. Jim is a really stupid fucking bad guy. This is his second kidnapping and demanding of things and the second time the fuck wad was arrested. I grab River and Liam up in my arms and hold them as tight as I can without hurting them. “Let’s go home, baby.” The officer that came with us escorts us back to the police station where they have Jim held. We are told since he was caught here in Mexico with Liam that he will await trial here and more than likely service his sentence out here. Hopefully, t
River We are sitting in our home a couple hours later waiting for someone to tell us if they have found our little boy or not. I knew my father was a psycho and he would do anything to hurt my mother and me, but I never thought he would hurt my child. His grandchild. But I should have known he would do just about anything to hurt me, right? “River, honey, would you like a glass of tea or a cup of hot chocolate?” Mom comes into the living room from the kitchen and asks me. “Cup of hot chocolate would be great.” Mom smiles at me, then heads back into the kitchen to get my hot chocolate. Rock is pacing a hole in the floor and it’s just making me even more nervous. “Rock! Sit down, please.” I ask him, so he does. Then grabs my hand and squeezes it. “I’m sorry Riv.” He tells me. “What is there for you to be sorry about Rock?” I ask him. “Everything River. The way I treated you when
Rock “Hey mom, can you come over to the house and meet with the alarm system company? They will be there around 11 this morning.” I call and ask my mom as we are getting ourselves ready to head to school. Jim broke into our house, so I called the alarm company to install an alarm. They offered to install new door systems for free since we're first-time customers. I also bought a ring camera to monitor our front door. I get off the phone with my mom and help River get Liam into his car seat holder in the back seat of our new family car. “Are you ready for your first day back to school?” I ask Riv. “No, I don’t want to leave Liam with strangers.” She tells me. “Well, baby, at least it’s at the same place we are going to be at and we can check on him at lunchtime and in between classes, if you like.” I told her. River nods her head at me, then gets into the car and we head to the col
River Rock, Liam, and I are finally getting out of the hospital today. Mom went and got me a car. She says it's safer for the baby than getting another Jeep, and when Liam gets older we can ride around in Rock's jeep. I didn't argue with her. So that's what we are taking our baby home in today. Rock and I haven't really talked about where we are going to stay so for now I'm going to stay with my mom and Gab, because I cannot stay in the dorms with a baby and Rock has a shit ton of guys living with him so his apartment is out. We make it to our neighborhood but instead of parking at our house, Rock parks at his old family home. "Rock, what are you doing? I don't want to walk with Liam from here to moms." Rock just smiles at me. "Riv trust me baby, you're going to like this." Rock helps me out of the car then grabs Liam's car seat and heads toward the house we are parked in front of so they must be throwing a welcome home party and wanted t
Rock It’s been a few months since our Christmas break and River told me she would marry me. River quickly informed our moms that the wedding would have to wait until after Liam was born. I don’t blame her because she is getting pretty big. She’s in her last two months of the little guys arriving. I’m trying really hard to keep this brave face on for her, but truth I’m fucking scared to death of what’s coming. We are so young and I’m so afraid we are going to fuck something up. I know we have our mom’s support and my mom gave me our little house myself and my sibling grew up in and the boys and I have been going on the weekends and fixing it up. I want to surprise River with it when the baby is born. But I still can’t keep from thinking, is this the right move for us right now? River and I are heading to her last ultrasound before the baby is born, so we get to see the little guy one last time. Then the next time will be for real life. We get into the doctor’s office and have to wait
River It’s our two week Christmas holiday from school, so Rock and I are at mom and Gabs house these two weeks and Rock is being super sweet and tentative to me. The first day he bought me donuts and hot chocolate, the second day he bought me a thing of fruit and the list goes on of things he has done for me. It’s the day before Christmas Eve and Rock has talked me into going and seeing a movie and then getting a bite to eat. “So what movie are we going to watch?” I ask him, but he is being tight-lipped. But I’m going to assume either the movie is in some fancy theater or he is taking me to a fancy restaurant, but why do either? Ugh, men are so confusing. I really don’t even know why I’m mad at him anymore. He has been so sweet and tentative with me the last month and a half. He finally got to feel Liam Alex Martinaze kick for the first time last night. He was so stoked he kicked to him saying his name. Come to find out, the name I picked out was the name Rock wrote. So that should
Rock River has been home from the hospital for a couple weeks now. Mom keeps me updated on her progress daily. She also told me what the baby was going to be and the idea River came up with about us putting a name in a hat and her picking the best name out of the bunch. River is supposed to come home today and start back to school on Monday. So I’m sitting in her dorm room waiting on her and Sydney to get back. Surprisingly, Sydney let me into their room. She’s not my biggest fan. I’m sitting in Rivers’ room when I hear the front door open and close. “Rock, a little help, please.” I hear Sydney yell. What the hell. I walk out of the bedroom. “What’s up?” I ask Sydney and see right away what’s going on. River and her crutches are a little too much for Sydney. “I told you I have it.” River snaps. “River!” Sydney snaps back. I can’t help but laugh at them. “You can leave now, Rock.” River tells me and I just give her the stank eye. “You’re not pushing me away so easily this time, R
River “He doesn’t want the baby.” I yell at mom and Gab, so mad at Rock. I really didn’t mean to rat him out like that, but I’m fed up with his hot and cold crap. I’m having a baby. If he doesn’t want to be a part of this baby’s life, that’s fine, but that does not give him the right to tell me who I can and who I can’t tell about this child. I jump into my jeep and get the heck out of there before he can come and demand crap from me again. I’m halfway home when my phone rings. It’s Sydney so I answer it. “Hello.” I answer. “Hey how is your Sunday going?” She asks me. “Well, I’m on my way home because, as always, Rock has to be an ass about everything.” I told her. “What do you mean he’s an ass?” Sydney asks me. “Well, I guess his mom said something to him about the baby or something I’m not really sure. But he dragged me to my room demanding to know who all I told and was mad that I told anyone before him. So I got kinda mad and stormed out of my room and downstairs and right be
